Futurism in review: flying cars and frictionless commercePhillip and Brian chat about the futurism movement in art and how it relates to commerce, specifically, the idea of passatisme, which is an obsession with the past that signals everything backward would be supplanted by futurism. Generally, it sounds a lot like effective acceleration or the beginning of a movement where people are railing against a prevailing nostalgic posture that culture has of looking backwards, and they are aggressively trying to pull the culture into looking forward. It feels very much like a Future Commerce thing to talk about, so we did. Listen now! Believe in Pasta. Believe in the Future.Key takeaways:{00:11:46} - “One of the dangers of futurism is that it's let's throw everything good out, and replace it with whatever isn't that. Let's not look to the past to inform the future. Let's not enjoy things that we've had, and there's a dichotomy and also a distrust of things that people found to be good previously, and a belief that things can and will be better in the future no matter what, so we should just not even look to the past. I think that there's a lot of danger in this way of thinking about the future.” - Brian{00:19:47} - “What's really interesting here is that our modernist futurism is dystopic, But retrofuturism was optimistic. So we can be nostalgic for the past's vision of the future, which I think is its own interesting dichotomy.” - Phillip{00:31:31} - “The end game of eliminating friction is a specific kind of future that a specific set of people out there are looking for where certain activities are eliminated from intervention in any way or requirement for a human to be involved.” - Brian{00:43:58} - “If the future is gleaming cities with flying cars, I'm not entirely sure that that's the future that I'm looking for, which is a specific quality of life. It is a specific set of things that I hope for, and I think that there are ways to get there here and now that we could be investing in and taking big swings around that would make a meaningful difference for commerce and for the general populace.” - BrianAssociated Links:Brian's 2020 Future Commerce Insiders article It's Time to Build Things That LastInsiders #167: Heavenly Bodies: Worldbuilding through Brand Collaborations, by Angelica FreyCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? As with all episodes of this podcast there are spoilers ahead! For full detailed shownotes (without character limits) you can choose this episode on the watch page here and scroll down. I would love for you to join in by watching the film Just Imagine which is available here.If you would like to share your thoughts on the film or the episode you can do that on Instagram. DescriptionHow did the US make a lighthearted, musical rom-com in answer to the grand German dystopia of Metropolis? Just Imagine was made by David Butler who was hot off the success of another musical: Sunny Side Up (1929).Just Imagine was released in November of 1930 a little over a year after the Wall Street Crash. Sound had become commonplace in movie theatres and musicals were drawing in the crowds. Just Imagine had a budget of approximately $1.1 million. The film is set in 1980. Unsurprisingly there are no synth bands or shoulder pads. There is, however, a glorious retro-futuristic glimpse into what the vision of the future looked like for the people of 1930. The film is very different to its big budget predecessors Aelita Queen of Mars and Metropolis. Just Imagine is a light-hearted, musical rom-com and offers very little anxiety about technology or the future. I had considered titling the episode 'Just Imagine Being Optimistic About the Future!'. Luckily I have procured some heavyweight experts to explain how techno-optimism was par for the course in the machine age USA.The ExpertsJay Telotte is a Professor Emeritus of film and media studies at Georgia Tech. He has written extensively about film history for decades including many books and articles on science fiction cinema. He wrote the article Just Imagine-ing the Metropolis of Modern America in 1996.Lisa Yaszek is back with us! She is Regents' Professor of Science Fiction Studies at Georgia Tech, has written/edited multiple books on science fiction and teaches Just Imagine as part of a futurism, fashion, and science fiction design class. She was recently received the SFRA Award for Lifetime Contributions to Science Fiction Scholarship.Chapters:00:00 Intro to the show and guests01:41 The perfect storm for a musical rom-com sci-fi04:55 Musicals 08:19 Science Fiction10:26 Swedish accents, gender and the other queen of Mars15:10 Optimism, World's Fairs and technocracy19:53 The futurists and fashion24:26 Visionary tech hits and misses28:50 Good and evil of sci-fi fashion31:47 The death of the big-budget futurist film33:27 Visual legacy: Flash Gordon, Frankenstein & Buck Rodgers35:29 Sci-fi musical Vs sci-fi horror37:34 Conclusions40:07 RecommendationsNEXT EPISODE!We will be speaking about the 1933 original King Kong! WE SEE BENEATH. An unfamiliar place by Lloyd Dunn, 2023_____A dry description of the locale will not satisfy the task of describing the place; especially when the experience of it interleaves objective perception, memory, dilated time, and all the other observations that come from being in an unfamiliar place over a period of days. And so we are left with this set of allusions._____Sound piece composed with recordings made during SONIC FUTURE RESIDENCIES organized by Asociația Jumătatea plină and SEMI SILENT at Port Cetate, Dolj county, Romania, in September 2022.______Lloyd Dunn is a multimedia artist working in machine-based media for 40 years. During the 1980s and 90s he edited and published the graphic arts magazines Photostatic and Retrofuturism, which were circulated worldwide and are collected by many prominent archives. In 1987, Dunn, together with some close friends, co-founded the Tape-beatles, who were among a few early recording experimenters whose work explicitly challenged intellectual property and copyright. Since 2009, Dunn's main project has been the project nula.cc, the online presence for a series of filecasts initiated to further explore his long-standing interest in machine-based art forms, appropriation and collage, time-based media and design. Dunn currently lives and works in Prague._____Recordings, composition and mixing by Lloyd Dunn for SEMI SILENT.

From 'They Don't Build Statues of Critics' t-shirts that echo Britney's 'Dump Him' moment to Twilight baguette bags to controversial 'Father, Son and Holy Spirit' bikinis. We're obsessed with in-jokes, memes and internet nostalgia and their influence on fashion is more prevalent than ever. But why are we suckers for a reference? And why are fashion brands like Praying and Heaven by Marc Jacobs gravitating towards an aesthetic that mimics the early days of the internet? This week Ione and Eden are discussing digital retrofuturism in fashion and the life cycle of fashion brands that rely on a pop culture reference or a meme to remain relevant and the early days of the internet aesthetic making a comeback.Order Ione's book, Poor Little Sick Girls, here!Want to support the podcast? For the past 60 years, following the trail blazed by Sputnik, we’ve put thousands of satellites into orbit, looping sentinels that serve critical functions in modern society, transmitting TV and radio signals, tracking the weather, and providing communications and positioning channels that serve a range of military and civilian needs. In this episode, we talk about one such technology, which has transformed everyday life for the 4billion people – nearly half the globe’s population - who use smartphones. That’s the GPS tracking feature which means most of us couldn’t get lost, even if we wanted to; and which is making good old paper maps (the ones you never could fold right anyway) increasingly obsolete. Join Karen as she speaks with guest Richard Easton, who brings a unique viewpoint on the roots of this innovation, having grown up as the son of a Naval Research Laboratories physicist who led the charge in developing America’s first satellites in the 1950s, in the Silicon Valley of its time. So - get those white jackets on, we’re headed to the lab! (recorded over zoom)

With the release of Cyberpunk 2077 less than a week away and either full commitment or full disillusionment of people with the game, I thought it was a great opportunity to talk about a hyper-specific aesthetic in film and art - retrofuturism. Retrofuturism represents aesthetically exactly what it sounds too, a representation of the future in the past. This means the future as shown in artistic representation will be limited only by the technology of its time, but not by imagination. We also discuss cyberpunk, an aesthetic that has been consistently allied with anxiety about future societies - that represents over-urbanisation and a crippling dependency on technology along with a struggle for individuality that kinda life brings to human civilization. The SMACC Opening Ceremony is an integral part of the conference welcoming delegates to an educational experience unlike any other. Inspiration for SMACC Sydney included the inverted triangle: the alchemical symbol for water which is steeped in history and meaning to represent the City of Sydney and a celebration of diversity and resilience. Retrofuturism influences the design and theming of SMACC Sydney by playing on different aspects of 80’s and 90’s popular culture. Using music as a storytelling medium the show presents a mesmerising and unique soundscape combining elements of classical, electronic and popular music deftly created by Composer and Music Director Jake Meadows. This year’s opening ceremony echoes the program through four stems and performances each illustrating the unique and essential role we play as critical care professionals: Learning and Culture, People and Planet, Bedside Critical Care and Science and Innovation. The show opens with a spoken word performance by Nardi Simpson, an Indigenous performer telling an electrifying story of the land and the importance of Country to Indigenous culture. This is then followed by a vocal ensemble performing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, a cheeky throwback to an iconic piece of music and an homage to the importance of humour and levity in our line of work. A change of scene brings a dramatic dance performance performed by ICU Registrar Khairil Musa and his dance partner Sarah King reflecting on the tragic final moments leading to a cardiac arrest. The finale blends classic 80’s pop with the iconic sound of the synthesiser with a toe tapping performance of Van Halen’s Jump led by vocalist Maya Weiss as an uplifting tribute to creativity and innovation. Performed in the Sydney International Convention Centre Theatre to over 3000 delegates we present to you our best and most memorable opening ceremony yet.

The adjective “visionary” gets thrown around a lot, but it’s literally true of Chesley Bonestell and Arthur Radebaugh, the two illustrators featured in this week’s episode. Both men used their fertile visual imaginations and their artistic skills to create engaging, influential depictions of human space exploration and our high-tech future. Their work was seen by millions of magazine and newspaper readers throughout the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s—boosting public support for space exploration and industrial R&D at a critical time for the U.S. economy. Now, both men are the subjects of documentary films. Chesley Bonestell was born in San Francisco in 1888, survived the earthquake and fire of 1906, and went on to become an accomplished and high-paid architect, artist, Hollywood matte painter, and illustrator of book and magazine articles. From the mid-1940s onward, he specialized in painting stunning views of space vehicles and views other otherworldly locations like the Moon, Mars, and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. He lived to see humans set foot on the Moon in the 1960s and visit the gas giants via robotic probes in the 1980s, finally passing away in 1986. Arthur Radebaugh lived from 1906 to 1974 and built on his early career as an illustrator for Detroit-based advertising agencies to become a “funny-pages futurist,” producing the syndicated Sunday comic strip Closer Than We Think for the Chicago Tribune—New York News Syndicate from 1958 to 1963. In this episode we meet Douglas M. Stewart Jr. and the other producers of Chesley Bonestell: A Brush With the Future, a 2019 documentary about Bonestell, as well as Brett Ryan Bonowicz, maker of Closer Than We Think, a 2018 documentary about Radebaugh. And we hear from veteran science journalist Victor McElheny, who lived through (and documented) the era when Bonestell and Radebaugh were creating their visions of space and the future. The episode argues that futurist art, done well, can become a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy. It can teach consumer and citizens what to want and expect—whether that’s moon bases or self-driving cars or talking refrigerators—and it can inspire at least few people to become the scientists and engineers who actually go out and build those things. This week we are finally discussing anime! And who better to usher us in but Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli? We're discussing their 1986 film, Castle in the Sky. This week Aly and Sarrah trade off a bit, as a lot of their information was shared. Aly talks about Miyazaki's TV show 'Future Boy Conan', which many believe had a direct influence on Castle in the Sky. Together, Aly and Sarrah discuss Retrofuturism and Steampunk, and how those styles influence this film. Our Voice Cast Corner discusses both the original cast from the Japanese release and the Disney 2003 dub. Sarrah tells us about the release and reviews, and together we discuss a Twitter world record and other places we see Castle in the Sky being referenced in the world. Does a rare recording of his “RECIPE FOR GINGER” hold any clues about what happened to poor Frank?
Hauntology: The Future Belongs To Ghosts Developed in his 1993 work Specters of Marx, Jacques Derrida coined hauntology as a philosophical means of understanding history concerned with the nature of being, existence, reality, and time. The concept of hauntology stems out of postmodern ideology, particularly Derrida's deconstructionism. In simple terms, it is a means of understanding that the present exists in respect to the past, and that the modernist conception of time moving in a linear direction is false. In this sense, the hauntological analysis plays upon an enigmatic form of fragmented and anachronistic memory, in a dreamlike and often subtly dreadful manner. Remnants of the past are re-applied to the present; the past exists within the present, constantly haunting humanity. Although initially utilized to describe the lingering traces of Marxism upon society, hauntology has since branched out in a variety of ways, including the realm of art. Whether by applying ideas to art as a postmodern critique of culture, or by simply studying the philosophy, hauntology may duly be used to explain time in a non-linear fashion and what our position within culture may actually be. Why does everyone love this movie? Underdogs, sticking it to the man, engaging with our sense of justice and living the American Dream! Or something. Genetic Determinism The world of Gattaca banks on this big-time, but in real it’s much more complicated. Nature AND nurture. People are more than the genes they start with. Designer Babies Current practices with in vitro and in vivo baby testing. Down syndrome. The New Eugenics Racism. “Positive” and “negative.” American eugenics programs. Medical choices are eugenic. Genetic Discrimination Loooooong list of inconveniences Ethan Hawke has to keep up with to not get caught. Financial arrangements. Colloquial speech in Andrew Niccol’s films.
