Please join me in welcoming Raffaella Valentini, our esteemed Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles, who joins us to discuss a monumental event that soon grace our shores at the Port of Los Angeles - the arrival of what's been called “the most beautiful ship in the world,” the Amerigo Vespucci. The Vespucci is the historic and iconic training ship of the Italian Navy, and it will be accompanied by a special flyover by the “Frecce Tricolore” Acrobatic Team of the Italian Air Force on opening day. We will discuss with Raffaella the history of the infamous explorer that the ship is named after, as well as the world voyage the Vespucci has traveled, and of course the significance of this moment in highlighting our Italian culture. Los Angeles is the first city in the world to host a maxi exhibition space called “Villaggio Italia” that will open from July 3rd-8th in front of the Vespucci ship at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro at Berth 50. This is something you will not want to miss, and will want to bring your family and friends. There will also be food, cooking shows, art exhibitions, concerts and more for all to enjoy. In this Pacific War Podcast Craig tells Justin the story of the Battle of Taranto, the British surprise attack against the Italian Navy in 1940. The Battle of Taranto took place on the night of November 11-12, 1940 and was a pivotal naval engagement during World War II. It marked the first significant victory for British naval aviation and demonstrated the effectiveness of aircraft carriers in modern naval warfare. At the time of the battle, Italy  had a significant naval presence in the Mediterranean. The Italian fleet, anchored at the port of Taranto, posed a threat to British naval operations in the region. The British Admiralty devised a plan to neutralize this threat by launching an aerial attack using carrier-based aircraft from the HMS Illustrious and HMS Eagle. Under the command of Admiral Andrew Cunningham, the British Fleet Air Arm launched a daring nighttime raid on the Italian naval base at Taranto. The attack was led by Fairey Swordfish biplanes, which were slow and outdated but capable of performing night attacks. The Swordfish aircraft were armed with torpedoes modified to run in shallow waters, suitable for attacking ships in harbor. The British strike force, consisting of 21 Swordfish aircraft, approached Taranto under the cover of darkness. Despite facing heavy anti-aircraft fire from Italian defenses, the British pilots pressed on with their attack. They skillfully navigated the narrow confines of the harbor and launched their torpedoes at the Italian battleships and cruisers anchored there. The results of the attack were devastating for the Italian fleet. The British torpedoes struck the battleships Conte di Cavour, Littorio, and Caio Duilio, causing severe damage and sinking the Conte di Cavour. Additionally, several other ships were damaged, and the port facilities suffered significant destruction. The success of the raid demonstrated the vulnerability of battleships to aerial attack and highlighted the effectiveness of carrier-based aircraft in naval warfare. The Battle of Taranto had far-reaching consequences for the balance of power in the Mediterranean. It significantly weakened the Italian Navy's ability to challenge British naval supremacy in the region and forced Italy to adopt a more defensive posture. The success of the British raid also served as a blueprint for future carrier-based operations and influenced naval strategies throughout World War II.

Radium is an element we see in our periodic tables during chemistry lessons. But did you know that it was once used to make watches for naval divers thanks to its self-luminescence quality?  In fact, one luxury firm used to supply such timepieces to the Italian military back in the early 1900s.  And while Radium was banned in the 1960s due to its radioactive properties, the glow-in-the-dark feature of this company's watches remains its key selling point up till today.  We're talking about the Italian watch brand Panerai. Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and subsequently school of watchmaking, Panerai had for many decades supplied the Italian Navy and its specialist diving corp in particular with precision instruments.  At that time, the designs developed by Panerai were covered by the Military Secrets Acts. It stayed that way for many years and the models were only launched on the international market after it was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997.  Fast forward to today, Panerai is known for its rugged and bold timepieces, with action stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Rock Dwayne Johnson and others among wearing them. But the firm is also seeing growing interest among the female community.  So how does Panerai assess its positioning and customer base over the years and what does it mean for the firm when it comes to future designs and product pipeline? Meanwhile, Panerai had in June 2023 launched its global flagship boutique in New York, but which are the key markets for the firm? What are the opportunities ahead and where does Panerai intend to expand into next? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Jean-Marc Pontroue, CEO, Panerai.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He started this business because he was looking for real estate investment opportunities; luckily, the YouTube algorithm showed him the "land flipping life cycle" video from REtipster, and the rest is history.Ever since Arturo joined the REtipster Community and enrolled in the Land Investing Masterclass, it has been fascinating and inspiring to watch him post in our forum and Facebook group as he tries to figure out the best ways to handle various situations and because of his inquisitive nature, he helps a lot of people figure stuff out, just by asking the questions that other people either don't think to ask or are too scared to ask.I'm also fascinated by how Art has been doing this from a long distance, in a very different time zone, speaking a very different language, while working a very full-time job in the Navy. This guy has a lot of natural challenges to work around… as many of us do, but they're even more intense because of where he's coming from.

The purchase price is significantly less than the USD$385 million which Genting Hong Kong paid for the ship's construction, making it the most expensive passenger ship ever built at USD$1.9m per berth.Endeavour, which was delivered to Crystal just last year has capacity for 200 guests, as well as a submarine and helicopter, which Silversea MD Roberto Martinoli said would no longer be part of its offering. She will sail in Antarctica in place of the 132-guest Silver Explorer, with guests booked on that ship to be moved to Endeavour.Costa Group Starts the use of Bio FuelsA few weeks after announcing the creation of its dedicated decarbonization department, the Costa Group, Europe's leading cruise operator with its two companies Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises, and a member of Carnival Corporation & plc, has taken a major step forward in its decarbonization strategy by announcing that it will start testing the usage of biofuel aboard one of its AIDA Cruises ships. As part of its CO2 emissions reduction efforts, on July 21, 2022, AIDAprima became the first larger scale cruise ship to be bunkered with a blend of marine biofuel, which is made from 100 percent sustainable raw materials such as waste cooking oil, and marine gas oil (MGO) during its layover in Rotterdam. The cooperation partner is the Dutch biofuel pioneer GoodFuels. AIDAprima is currently sailing on seven-day voyages to the metropolises of Western Europe and to Norway from/to Hamburg. The current project represents an important milestone of the Costa Group's decarbonization strategy, which includes testing technologies and processes to improve the efficiency of the existing fleet. With the successful start of biofuel usage, it will be proven that gradual decarbonization is possible even on ships already in service. An important prerequisite to be able to use biofuels, however, is that it becomes widely available on an industrial scale and at marketable prices.Carnival Cruise Line Brings Texas Flair to Carnival Jubilee's Keel Laying CeremonyCarnival Jubilee is fixing to start sailing from Galveston, Texas, next year and Carnival Cruise Line's third cruise ship to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) got its first taste of Texas today with the keel laying ceremony at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.Wearing cowboy-shaped hard hats, Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy was joined by Meyer Werft Managing Director Bernard Meyer and Carnival's Senior Vice President of Newbuilds Ben Clement, among others, to celebrate the construction milestone by placing coins under a 375-ton keel block. The coins signify good luck for the ship and will remain under its foundation as the structure is built. One of the ship's lucky coins is an official ship coin, which commemorates an important part of Carnival history while celebrating its future by showing Carnival Jubilee alongside the original MS Jubilee from 1986. The coins will later be placed in a special compartment near Carnival Jubilee's mast as permanent fixtures of the ship.Carnival Jubilee will be the first Carnival Cruise Line ship built in Papenburg, Germany. Meyer Werft has already built four other LNG-powered ships for other cruise lines under Carnival Corporation. Carnival Jubilee will be Carnival's third ship to run on a liquified natural gas (LNG) technology platform. Carnival Corporation pioneered the introduction of LNG fuel in the passenger cruise sector as part of the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction. Meyer Turku in Finland delivered sister ship Mardi Gras last year and will deliver Carnival Celebration later this year.Carnival Jubilee will begin sailing from Galveston in November of 2023 and will offer seven-day Western Caribbean cruise vacations with stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, as well as Mahogany Bay (Isla Roatan), Honduras.Virgin Voyages relaxes Voyage Well In response to the conclusion of the CDC's voluntary program, Virgin Voyages will continue to consider the recommendations set forth by the organization, while also adhering to the industry policies outlined by CLIA. As a result of this update, Virgin Voyages will remove the requirements for pre-embarkation testing.Virgin Voyages has responded immediately to the CDC's decision to discontinue their voluntary COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships and will mirror the rest of the travel industry in removing pre-embarkation testing for sailings from July 24 on EU sailings, and from July 27 on US sailings. Vaccine requirements will remain in place for both Scarlet Lady, operating out of the US, and Valiant Lady in the EU. Virgin Voyages is currently evaluating this policy and will announce further updates in the near future.Passenger and crew well-being is the major focus and they continue to follow the advice of their expert medical team. To clarify these updates:From the dates mentioned above, passengers will no longer be required to complete a pre-embarkation COVID test, applicable across the fleet, including US and EU operations. For US sailings, passenger vaccination requirements will now be marked at 90%. This opens the opportunity for passengers who are not vaccinated to contact Virgin Voyages' Sailor Services to book a sailing if these thresholds are met.Ship crew on all US and EU sailings will maintain their fully vaccinated status.Holland America Line Reveals Plans to Mark 150th AnniversaryOn April 18, 2023, Holland America Line is celebrating its 150th Anniversary — making it one of the longest-operating travel companies in the world. This time Captain Matt & Lieutenant Kehaar stand on the fly combat air patrols around the space navy in the Battlestar Galactica universe. In the process they consider the role of a carrier and 'battle carriers', the Battle of the Atlantic, civil-military relations, why Cylon's can't fight and their oedipus complex. They will also digress into AEGIS cruisers, the Pegasus, Italian Navy air control, toy ship and Yorkshire accents.
