Send us a textJudy Rodman was a towering figure in the history of the city of Myrtle Beach. Starting as the Horry County Co-Chair for the Bob Dole for President campaign in 1988, then serving three terms, in two different eras, on the Myrtle Beach City Council, and then serving as a member of the City owned Myrtle Beach Sheraton Hotel Board, and throughout her entire tenure the city's representative on the South Carolina Hall of Fame Board, Judy Rodman maintained a dominant presence in the growth and success of the city of Myrtle Beach S.C. It cannot be overstated the powerful role she has played in turning this once sleepy, seasonal, tourist destination for North and South Carolina residents into an international tourism powerhouse. Through it all, Judy Rodman was there and her influence is literally everywhere you look as you drive down any road in the city she called home. Judy Rodman led initiatives to put utilities underground, protect trees, limit the number of billboards, build a Convention hotel, improve the cities recreation facilities, and look out for the growing senior population that has now grown to be the majority of the residents that have made the Myrtle Beach area their home. Judy Rodman did it all in her quiet, intelligent, understated way, often overshadowed by the more boisterous personalities of the Mayors and council people she served with in her decades of service to the city of Myrtle Beach in several different capacities. In this special edition of our podcast we try to capture some of the magic that was always present whenever Judy Rodman entered the room, as our community, Myrtle Beach, says farewell to , as Senator Ernest Hollings once said of Senator Strom Thurmond upon his passing, " A Mighty Oak in the world of public service" Boundless Insights - with Aviva KlompasIn depth analysis of what's happening in Israel—and why it matters everywhere.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyQuestions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

I've spent the last couple of years exploring the power and wisdom that we have access to within OURSELVES as human beings, with my guests on this show. They have transformed my own understanding of what we're capable of, and have challenged my own beliefs of what is truly possible and accessible by hearing and holding space for their stories. My guest today does not fall short of that, by any means. Jessie Rose is a Relationship & Identity Breakthrough Coach and has a background in Core Process Psychotherapy and is trained and qualified as a Master Coach in the Personal Development field. Transforming trauma, suffering & limitation into personal freedom and success in relationships, health, performance, and purpose-led-service-based careers. Whilst being true to oneself, and truly aligned to ones purpose and vision. In 2005, Jessie had a near-death experience that also hospitalized her for months. Her care-consultant told her she had just 24-hours to live, and offered her no real hope of recovery, so Jessie had no choice but to come home to herself. She managed to internalize her strength and was able to make a miraculous, and unexplainable recovery. Her experiences taught her that the human spirit and the human body are capable of far more than we think possible and to never give up. Your voice is a powerful tool and what you say to yourself can be extremely shifting...and how you decide to share your voice is equally as powerful! My journey has largely been focused on themes connected around the power of voice. I believe purpose and message are directly related to speaking our truths and when we speak our truths confidently we have the power to not just change our own lives but to change the world. My conversation with the seasoned and accomplished Judy Rodman of All Things Vocal breaches all of those themes as we walk through the journey that is her amazing life. If there is one takeaway you have as you listen...let it be that your voice is indeed valid and worthy. And that love is truly at the core of a joyful and inspiring life. 0243 - The Message Gives The VoiceSinging coach Judy Rodman suggests this exercise.[1] Sing or say the phrase “you're the reason I feel this way” and with the same seven words, intend to send these different messages to the listener: · “you're the reason I feel this way” (you make me happy)· “you're the reason I feel this way” (you made me angry)· “you're the reason I feel this way” (you left me lonely)· “you're the reason I feel this way” (you gave me this courage)She says “How did your choice of message change your voice? Your breath? Your throat? Your face? Where in your mouth did the words come from? What did you have to do to create those messages?” So, the content of the message and the context of where it fits with a script (who is saying it to who, and under what circumstance), will help you create the sound that is required for an authentic replication. The key is: is your voice successfully communicating your message, so it is being understood (and potentially being acted upon) by your target audience? This podcast is London-based and examples are spoken in the RP (Received Pronunciation) / standard-English / BBC English pronunciation, although invariably applicable to other languages, accents and dialects.Music credits:"Bleeping Demo" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/7012-bleeping-demoLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Beauty Flow" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5025-beauty-flowLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Envision" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4706-envisionLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Limit 70" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5710-limit-70License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Rising Tide" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5027-rising-tideLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Wholesome" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5050-wholesomeLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hello and welcome to episode 68 of Sing! Dance! Act! Thrive!I wanted to start this episode with some gratitude. I’ve been creating this podcast for over 2 years and it is nearing 8,000 downloads. That may not be a lot in comparison to many others out there but I’m always coaching artists about how slow and steady growth is longer-lasting growth. I wanted to take a moment to recognize some listeners who took the time to leave a review for the show. It means so much to me each and every time someone tells me that they either learned something new or were inspired by an episode. The first one comes from Nella Marina who says about the show “What a wonderful resource to have in your pocket! So many amazing tips from an industry expert. Thank you for all of the amazing free information that you put out there!” Nella, thank you so much for your kind words and because I google everyone, I know that Nella Marina is an Australian actress from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, who has relocated to Vancouver, BC, Canada. That is very cool. I love Australians and grew up in Vancouver.Another recent review was from a previous guest of the show. Vocal coach Judy Rodman says “This podcast is a quality audio experience that doesn't waste time getting to the heart of matters of interest to singers, dancers, actors, and other artists. I had the honor of being interviewed and found Diane's experience in the field of the arts made her an insightful interviewer who knows how to dig into the good stuff!”That is so sweet and I loved my conversation with Judy so if you missed it definitely visit episode 66 and hear all about her 50-year career in the music industry. I love seeing where people are from that are downloading the show. The number one country now is India. I have no idea why but that is fantastic. USA and Canada are next. I also want to shout out listeners from France, Senegal, UK, Australia, Brazil, and Spain. How cool is that? I would absolutely love to hear from you all. It would mean the world to me if you could leave a review on itunes. Take a screenshot and tag me @dianefoypr and I’ll be sure to share it and give you a shout-out on a future episode. A lot of singing has to do with your mindset going into it. It's not just physical. It's also mental, along with physiological aspects. Whether it's live on stage or in the recording studio, The voice is not for internal use. It's for external use, or as today's guest Judy Rodman likes to say, “The Dance of the Melody.” In this episode, we discuss those aspects, along with the understanding that either on stage or recorded music, it's up to you to make sure you don't steal the lyrics from your listener when your music is being played or performed. We also talk about microphone technique, both on the stage and in the studio. Judy Rodman is a busy professional vocal coach, recording studio producer, and songwriter and continuing her recording session singing and live performances. Her trademarked vocal training method is called "Power, Path, and Performance." In the mid-1980s, she was a successful recording artist, making it all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in 1986 with the song "Until I Met You." She also won the Academy of Country Music's "Top New Female Vocalist" award in 1985. She backed Country stars Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, and more. She also sang back up for legendary Blues performer Ray Charles. She's also a successful songwriter, penning such hits, including LeAnn Rimes's number-one hit "One Way Ticket (Because I Can)" (co-written with Keith Hinton). www.judyrodman.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2021 Beyond the Music Co-Produced and Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator, and Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Audio/Video Editor Mark Sabella Midnight Express Studio Olian, NY Marketing and Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob and Tom (the one who keeps us on track and our schedules straight) Tammy Kowalski All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and there are a few). When's the last time you really listened to your own voice? Maybe you were rehearsing for a presentation, or if you sing, practicing a song. You might've heard it while checking your voice mail or watching yourself in a video, and if you're like most of us, you probably hardly even recognized it. We don't think about our own voices very often, and when we do, it can seem like we're just stuck with whatever voices we're born with. But speaking is a skill, and just like any skill, we can improve and build upon it. Author and sound expert Julian Treasure describes two important parts of speaking: what you say and how you say it. When it comes to what you say, Julian recommends the HAIL method, which means to always speak with Honesty, Authenticity, Integrity and Love. As for how you say it, he suggests focusing on several different aspects of speech. There's register, which you can think of as being how you project your voice. Some people speak from their noses and that can sound very flat and nasally, while most of us tend to speak from our throats without thinking about it. But if you want to give a sense of weight and authority to your words, you'll want to speak from deep down in your chest. Think about where your voice is coming from, and then you can focus on other things like the “prosody,” the natural melody of your voice, the timbre and pitch of your voice as well as the pace and volume. Silence can be an important and easily overlooked part of speaking; a moment's pause gives your listener a chance to consider what you've said before you move on. If you'd like to hear more on the HAIL method and what Julian calls the Seven Deadly Sins of speaking, you can find a link to his video presentation below on speaking with empathy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIho2S0ZahI Professional speaker and voice coach Cynthia Zhai also suggests looking beyond just the tone of your voice and focusing on where your voice is coming from. More than 80% of people around the world speak with a “head voice,” a bustling, modern voice that expresses thinking, analyzing, doing, but not being; Cynthia notes it may be no coincidence that happiness rates around the world are also very low. When you practice speaking, try taking a deep breath and projecting from your whole body. Instead of thinking of your voice as a tool, let yourself become your voice. People in ancient times believed in a deep connection between our bodies, voices and selves, and that's something we can lose sight of in today's fast-paced world. There's a link below to Cynthia's talk about the transformative power of your voice, and she'll also be appearing on an upcoming episode of this podcast as a guest – so stay tuned!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcDerWSyccg Finally there are the things you don't want to do if you want to keep your voice clear and healthy. Producer and voice instructor Judy Rodman gives a lighthearted Halloween list of some of the things you can do to kill your voice: stressing out before you speak, talking breathlessly until your throat dries out, speaking with a vocal fry that strains your vocal cords. Smoking, drinking, staying up late, eating foods that give you acid reflux; just as Cynthia points out, there's a profound link between our bodies and our voices, and if we don't keep ourselves healthy, our voices won't sound healthy. For the rest of Judy Rodman's 27 Ways to Murder Your Voice, check out a link to her YouTube video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FFmXsj5N6w As we end today's podcast, why not try out a vocal warm-up exercise for yourself? You can also find a timestamp link below to Julian Treasure's six vocal warm-up steps, starting with arm stretches and working your way through breathing, lip exercises, moving your tongue and finally flexing your vocal cords. https://youtu.be/eIho2S0ZahI?t=472 It might feel silly at first, but it takes over a hundred different muscles to speak. Just like the rest of your body,...

PART TWO - 7:13 mark Scott gets together with Alice Randall in Nashville to find out why her dad was so driven to highlight women's contributions to music; how she concluded that country lyrics are the modern day equivalent of metaphysical poetry and 17th Century Puritan sermons; the encouragement she received from Hal David; why she spent hours studying lyrics in the basement of the Country Music Hall of Fame; the reason that Steve Earle cussed her out; why it's harder to be a woman in country music than to be black; and her theory that country music should be defined as three chords and four specific truths. ABOUT ALICE RANDALL Alice Randall is a Harvard-educated African-American novelist who lives in Nashville and writes country songs. Along with Matraca Berg, Alice co-wrote Trisha Yearwood’s chart-topping single “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl),” making her the first—and, so far, only—African-American woman to write a #1 country hit. Additionally, she co-wrote Mo Bandy’s Top 40 hit “Many Mansions,” as well as Judy Rodman’s “Girls Ride Horses, Too,” which was the first Top 10 written by either Alice or her co-writer, future Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Mark D. Sanders. After forming an early songwriting partnership with Steve Earle, Alice went on to have her songs recorded by a long list of artists, including Holly Dunn, Marie Osmond, Glen Campbell, Jo-El Sonnier, Walter Hyatt, Pat Alger, Matraca Berg, Radney Foster, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Crystal Gayle, and Hank Thompson. Along with Mark O’Connor and Harry Stinson she wrote the groundbreaking “Ballad of Sally Anne.” Alice is a New York Times Bestselling novelist who has authored The Wind Done Gone, Pushkin and the Queen of Spades, Rebel Yell, Ada's Rules, and the forthcoming Black Bottom Saints, which is partially inspired by her formative years in Detroit. In addition to her fiction writing, Alice teamed with her daughter, Caroline Randall Williams, to write Soul Food Love: Healthy Recipes Inspired by One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family. She is currently a Writer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University where she teaches a number of courses, including Country Lyric in American Culture. She was featured in Ken Burns’ acclaimed Country Music documentary spotlighting the often-overlooked contributions of African Americans to the genre’s development. Not only does she write songs, but Randall thinks deeply about, and is deeply moved by, the literary value of song lyrics.
You are tuned in to the very first episode under our new name - formerly The Musicality Podcast, this show is now called simply “Musicality Now” which we think better captures the spirit and variety of the show and where we’ll be taking it in the future. When we made the switch to video back in January we were delighted to have our first interview be with Sabrina Peña Young, someone we know well and who has deep insights, which made for a long and fascinating converation. We’re excited now to kick off this new incarnation of the show similarly, with a particularly meaty episode that is going to have a big and positive impact on your own musicality journey. Our guest today is Scott Devine, the man behind Scott’s Bass Lessons, the #1 website for learning bass guitar - they have over 650,000 YouTube subscribers, and have trained over 25,000 bassists to date. If you play bass, then you know Scott - he’ll be all over your Facebook, your YouTube, and there’s a good chance you’re already a member of the Academy site where they provide extensive training, masterclasses and live calls with a faculty of the top bass educators in the world. In this conversation we talk about: • How spending six months at sea transformed Scott’s bass playing. • The simple piece of advice that immediately put an end to Scott’s umming and ahhing over what to study next in his own bass learning. • And, after talking to, interviewing, and studying with dozens upon dozens of the world’s top bassists and musicians, the one thing Scott has learned they all have in common - and (spoiler alert) it’s not “talent”! Scott also gives a fantastic mini tutorial on a particular bass technique, walking basslines, which is something that’s really valuable to understand, whether you play bass or not - you’re going to hear these everywhere, and after today’s conversation you’re going to understand how exactly they’re put together. There is a ton packed in here and you guys are in for a treat… This is Musicality Now. Subscribe For Future Episodes! Welcome to episode 100 of the Musicality Podcast! It is hard to believe - but we have reached Episode 100 of the podcast! It's been just about a year since we launched the show and it has been an absolute blast. We knew it would be fun to connect with interesting people and talk about musicality, but we had no idea just how incredible it would be. We've been blown away by the amazing people who've joined us on the show so far. We wanted to do something special to mark Episode 100 - and we'll tell you in a minute what we've got for you, it's truly something remarkable. So we talked about what to do in the team. And we're all hugely appreciative of *you* and everybody who listens to the show. So we thought about asking for listener contributions of comments or questions. But the thing is, for the most part, you guys are pretty shy! We know from the download numbers that there are a ton of people listening, but it's relatively rare that we get a new review or someone reaches out by email or leaves us a voice message. And we get that! Hey, a big part of what we do at Musical U is helping people become more confident in music and be proud that they're actively learning the skills that most people assume require musical "talent". But we know a lot of you listening aren’t there yet - So it would be a bit nuts to expect our podcast listeners to be rushing forwards bravely to put themselves out there and get in touch! So we didn't do that. But we did just want to mention it here so you all know how much we appreciate you, remind you that you are always welcome to get in touch at musicalitypodcast.com/hello - and give us the opportunity to say a big thank you for listening to the show. A special thank you of course to our *members* at Musical U who've trusted us with their musicality training and provide the financial support we need to put this podcast out for free every week. So when we were talking with the team about what we could do to celebrate hitting Episode 100 the other idea that quickly came up was that we could recap some of the stand-out lessons and quotes from our amazing interviewees. Which would be cool. But you know what would be even cooler? If we could get those same superstars to contribute something fresh and new - and something that would be really impactful on *your* musical life. So that's what we did. And a huge thank you to all our past guests who contributed a clip. We were hoping to get a handful back - and ended up with 26 contributions! The question we asked was: ”What’s one thing you’ve learned that could help musicians to tap into their inner musicality?” So what you have here - and these are going to run into a second episode too because there were so many! What you have here is an incredible collection of the most punchy insights and wisdom from more than two dozen of the world's leading music educators and musicality experts, all in one place. We have Gerald Klickstein, author of the must-have handbook for aspiring musicians, The Musician's Way. We've got the guys from the Music Student 101 podcast, my favourite podcast for learning about music theory. We have #1 Billboard hit singer and award-winning song-writer Judy Rodman. We have David Reed, the man behind the terrific Improvise For Real method for learning to improvise. We have Forrest Kinney, author of the immensely popular Pattern Play series of piano books. And I could go on and on... This might actually blow your mind a little bit, we know that we had to take breaks when listening to the clips to let things sink in a bit before absorbing more! And we're going to be splitting this episode in two, because there's no way you could sensibly absorb all of this in one go...! And speaking of jam-packed with amazing insights - before we dive into those answers from past guests, we must let you know about the Musicality Podcast Power Pack. To celebrate hitting episode 100 and all of the amazing guests we've had, we went back into all the archives, collected together all 100 episodes and then we found and created a bunch of cool extra bonus resources and material to help you get the maximum possible impact from everything in the podcast so far. We've put it all on a handy USB thumb drive so you can literally have the world's top musicality experts in the palm of your hand. We're making this available for a limited time only with free worldwide shipping. To get your copy, visit musicalitypodcast.com/celebrate - and of course not only will you be getting this fantastic resource to accelerate your own musicality training, you'll also be supporting the show. This will be available for a limited time so go take a look today! Okay, so in this episode you're going to hear the first 11 experts answering the question: ”What’s one thing you’ve learned that could help musicians to tap into their inner musicality?” These are in no particular order, except that I've tried to group them to make for two great episodes for you to listen to. In this episode you're going to hear: • Respected author Forrest Kinney, talking about the adventure of playing. • Saxophone guru Donna Schwartz with the one crucial thing that might be stopping your performance from sounding musical and resonating with your audience. • Our very own Andrew Bishko talking about "practicing magic". • Jazz guitarist and the man behind Learn Jazz Standards Brent Vaartstra sharing the one thing you must focus on to have consistent long-term success. • Improvisation expert David Reed about when to introduce improvising into your musicality training. • Thought leader among piano teachers Dr. Melody Payne about the simple rules that can make you sound more musical. • Award-winning musician and Lydian Chromatic Concept expert Andy Wasserman talking about the "treasure hunt" of unlocking your musicality. • School music ed revolutionary Jimmy Rotheram talking about the four things which greatly impacted his own musicality. • Award-winning artist, song-writer and vocal coach Judy Rodman explaining what makes music compelling for the audience. • Natalie Weber from the world-famous Music Matters Blog on what helped her as an analytical person tap into her creative side. • And our friends Matthew Scott Phillips and Jeremy Burns from Music Student 101 round off this first episode by sharing several activities which can help you continually "level up" your musicality. Enough from me! Let's dive in. Subscribe For Future Episodes! Judy Rodman has a rich career in singing, performing, studio engineering, producing, coaching, mentoring, publishing, blogging, podcasting, and life. When I asked her to describe the evolution of her career, she said simply "Every time I hit a brick wall, I went another way. In this crazy business, you have to be on roller skates.” If you've ever thought about hiring a vocal coach, if you are a vocal coach or ever thought about being one, you need to look her up, after listening to this episode of course. If you're a vocalist or public speaker, this episode is especially for you. If you're already a fan of this podcast, you too are in for a treat. Judy's Street Cred Judy's commercial and artist collaboration credits are vast. There are in fact too many to list here; but allow me to cherry pick. 2011 "Best Vocal Coach", Nashville Music Pros 1996 "Top New Country Female, Billboard Magazine 1985 "Top New Female Vocalist", ACM Voice over talent for United Airlines, Miller Beer, McDonalds, Kelloggs, Chevrolet, Lay's Potato Chips, Biz Bleach, Opryland, thousands of radio ID spots and voice overs Background vocalist, arranger and/or contractor on hundreds of master albums, live shows and TV for artists including Johnny Cash, Janie Fricke, Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Crystal Gail, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Tammy Wynette, Lee Greenwood, Dolly Parton, Reba, Wynonna, George Strait, George Jones, and many more Her experience consists of so much more, including: recording artist, songwriter, musician, public speaker, actor… it's a little mind boggling. Her breadth of work comes from adaptation to what she reflects on as an ever changing music industry. Her beginnings in coaching and mentoring arguably began after the jingle market and work she'd done with LeAnn Rimes slowed down. At this time Judy was approached by a backup singer who was working with Lynyrd Skynyrd. This particular singer was having difficulty with a small part of her performance. Judy was surprised by the request, but she had developed a reputation that reputation came from working with many bands and artists. It was this incident that helped Judy realize she had a skill and a gift for teaching and mentoring vocalists. Advice from 50 Years in the Business Judy drops a few business and life tips in our conversation, including the following. You're have to find multiple streams of income [as a music artist] When you hit a brick wall, you have to ask yourself, what else can I do? You have to want to sing even if it doesn't pay Judy's a proponent of making making your own website as a central marketing hub for your music career. She's seen the peril that can come from basing ones business on another company's web property, and drives her point home by asking, "Remember MySpace?" I've personally know of at least one business that used a Facebook Group as it's primary hub. That business was decimated by a Facebook algorithm change. Her focus is on the professional singers and speakers, and working with people who are vocally strained. Judy says that the most challenging vocal/music genre is the genre that's wrong for the singer. She teaches a pulling technique that gets her clients into the language they need to speak. Her ideal client is someone who's serious about the voice, but she points out that most people who aren't serious, are afraid to show that they're not great. Her first objective with clients is to earn their trust. She tells me that she starts this process by saying to clients, “My office is the safest place you'll ever suck.” "Everything I do informs everything else I do.” Judy continues to write music and does work in the area of vocal production. As a vocal producer, she works to help studio production teams get vocals done in the most economical and the "most magical" way possible. Vocals are the most important asset of a music project, in Judy's opinion. When I asked her advice on bringing vocal coaches to the studio, Judy warns that producers have to be careful. There's a technical side and an artistic side, she continues. She compares being a vocal production specialist to being a midwife, in that vocal production is like helping to birth a baby. She has to be aware of what the producer wants from the project vocals, and wants to ensure that engineers don't have to stitch things together. With proper vocal production, Judy says, engineers and recording artists end up with a more natural sound and delivery. The engineer can thus concentrate on other aspects of the mix. Judy works to set singers up physically and psychologically to the idea of singing to an imaginary friend. She calls this singing to one person, or one heart. As an educator, Judy shares tons of great content in her "All Things Vocal" Podcast, on her website, and in her Facebook Group. She has a gift for anticipating curiosity that she says comes from her own sense of curiosity. "Articulate as to the selectively deaf. As artists we have to break through the noise. If we articulate like we really want to get someone's attention. If the objective is to get a response, then the way you form your words are going to get different responses." The Honesty of Slight Imperfection When I asked Judy what she saw as the biggest challenges facing vocalists today, she said that things may full circle back to organic sound, as opposed to today's sanitized and perfectly pitched recordings. She adds that real live performance moves endorphins through the brain, and that the ability to actually sing in tune will become more successful again. She calls this the honesty of slight imperfection. "Look for and adapt to reactions. Make the person your talking to part of the equation using your voice. We're not just talking at people." On marketing, Judy says her technique is to show that you can trust her. If you can't afford her $19 course, she can still teach you something. Her one-on-one training is isn't cheap, but she shares a lot of great content so that everyone will have an opportunity to learn. She says, "If you can't trust me, you can still learn from me." Judy likely sees her passion for educating and mentoring as she sees art. She says that art is in the giving, and when we're making art, we're delivering messages. This in Judy's words means, "It's important to listen too." You can also hear this podcast on Apple Podcasts, iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play Music, iHeartRadio, YouTube & Spotify. Today we're speaking with Judy Rodman of judyrodman.com and the All Things Vocal blog. Judy went from being a professional jingle singer in the 70s to getting a recording contract as a singer and having a Billboard #1 song, to writing songs and having one of them become a #1 hit for Leann Rimes, to now being an in-demand vocal coach in Nashville and the creator of the All Things Vocal blog and podcast. With that incredible career, it would be easy to assume Judy has a gift, or that she relied on natural talent. But as you'll learn in this conversation, it wasn't smooth sailing and it was a particular mindset that allowed Judy to have such success in so many different arenas in music. It's also abundantly clear from this conversation that Judy has soaked up an incredible amount of learning along the way and excels in sharing that expertise in a clear and valuable way for her students. In this conversation we talk about: • What it was that let her succeed again and again as she pivoted her music career through the years • The two areas she recommends beginning singers to focus on and specific exercises to help with both • The number one most important thing to focus on as a singer if you want to improve and have a good-sounding voice • How studio singing differs from singing on stage • A clever device that can help you past that feeling of thinking you sound odd or bad when you hear yourself on a recording There is a ton packed into this conversation and whether you've never sung before, you sing and want to get better, or you're already performing on stage and in the studio, there is going to be something valuable for you to take away, and we know you're going to want to immerse yourself more in everything Judy offers to help singers. She talks about vocal techniques to preserve our voices as guitarist and to improve our ears, thus improving our playing. We talk about vocal health, studio vs road musicians, what it takes to be successful as a musician, and how to find joy when fame has come and gone. We even told her about Lemmy Kilmeister, to which she said, "Who?" A few laughs there. This week, we present Judy Rodman. Judy was a forced to be reckoned with despite being on a microcosmic label and having poor management. She rised to the top of the country charts in the 80's with a string of Billboard top tens, a number one, and a number five written and presented to her by Bob Dylan. She tells us the story of that song, and we decided to book end the podcast with a snippet of that song rather than our normal theme music. Judy provided us with an hour of inside information into the business. She's been a backup and jingle singer, headliner, vocal coach, song writer, and producer of music since the 70's. In this episode, we hear about Pam Tillis, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and others. Next episode, we find out why Jonny Cash would sing in the studio with his guitar strapped on and no strings!! This conversation gives out listeners an in depth look at the good, the bad, and the fugly of the music business. We are particularly proud to begin a series we're calling "Women in Music". Sit back and relax, and maybe you'll listen to us while you're "going to work".
