Julie joins PRETTYSMART today so share both about her entrepreneurial journey and why becoming a better listener as changed the trajectory of her life. She shares: How working in Hollywood really helped her when it came to creating SoulCycle. Why SoulCycle resonated and how it changed the game in creating exercise as a lifestyle. Why she chose to go back to work right after selling SoulCycle for 90 Million dollars.  Her new company Peoplehood - and why you need this “workout” for your relationships. Why she thinks we are all over our phones and coming to the end of the scroll. The one thing she does every week to “slow time”  that has changed every relationship in her life.  What higher listening is and how it helps you go from ego to empathy. Why you aren't as good of a listener as you think you are - and some red flags to help you spot it. Why listening is a practice and how you can (and should!) strengthen it. In this episode I speak to Julie Rice. Five days before her wedding, Julie was diagnosed with MS after collapsing at the florist. Miraculously, she was able to walk down the aisle but was soon forced to seek rigorous treatment and ended up leaving her career in the cosmetics industry. Shortly after, Julie tragically lost her mother to cancer. It was at this point that she decided to fill her life with joy again by growing her family. She began to work alongside a naturopathic doctor to increase her chances of fertility and with her diagnosis and pregnancy, she became committed to finding non-toxic cosmetic products that weren't overly expensive and didn't smell bad like the other options on the market. It was through this experience that Julie re-entered the workforce. After working in the cosmetics industry for more than 15 years, this time she was in it for herself and others. For those who are already pregnant. For ALL women with sensitive bodies, from those with autoimmune disorders to those battling cancer, and cancer survivors.

This week on the podcast we have an in-depth conversation with Julie Rice, a co-founder of SoulCycle and a Partner at WeWork. SoulCycle’s rise is now the stuff of legend. Julie and her fellow co-founders took the fitness and business worlds by storm, and grew a fanatical customer base by focusing on who they wanted their customers to become. Now Julie is a partner at WeWork, another business that feels more like a movement. Both SoulCylce and WeWork are prime examples of what you can build when you provide best-in-class experiences that help customers reach their aspirations. SnackNation CEO Sean Kelly sat down with Julie this summer in WeWork HQ in New York as the SnackNation and WeWork teams were putting the finishing touches on the WeMRKT. The recently launched premium onsite markets provides a meaningful and relevant retail amenity to WeWork members, including snack and beverages curated by SnackNation. (For more on WeMRKT, check out this New Yorker article: “WeWork Does Bodegas.”) But that's just scratching the surface of all the goodness Julie gave us in this conversation. She takes us through the entire SoulCycle founding story, discusses what it takes to scale culture (and why that’s important), and explains why building communities is really her life's work.
