God of creation and the waters in Egyptian mythology

God speaks to us through prophetic dreams! He will use symbols, such as objects and animals, to reveal and expose the truth about the hidden gods of the world. Several deities: Sobek, Amon, Behemoth, and Khnum were revealed and associated with the Nile River in my dreams. Let's be clear, the Nile demonstrates God's power and authority over Egypt and other gods. Egyptians worshipped the Nile, a form of idolatry and reliance on gods and earthly resources rather than God. Unknowingly, we may still worship these gods, but God will overthrow His enemies once we understand the dark powers behind them and come against these water spirits through spiritual warfare! What were some of the other consequences of the plagues of Egypt? Why, after witnessing these miracles, does Pharaoh continue to harden his heart? And what is God showing Israel through these plagues? In this episode of Bible Backdrop, we start to look at the first 3 of the 10 plagues of Egypt. We discover how they match to a different Egyptian god and talk about their far reaching consequences. If you are enjoying Bible Backdrop, please leave a 5-star rating and review. God's deliverance of His people from Egypt was a form of spiritual warfare; and today as we look at Exodus 7 we'll discuss how Satan tried to confuse Pharaoh and the Egyptians back then, and how he's doing the same kinds of things today. And to be strong in the face of spiritual warfare, we need to be on guard and have pure faith and trust in God. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. For the past several days, we have been studying the Book of Exodus, however, we haven't discussed what the name means. What does the name “Exodus” mean and what was the “exit” that it is referring to? What was the initial reason that this Exodus was to take place? 2. The podcast gave a quick review of Exodus 6 & 7. What was Pharoah's first response to Moses in Exodus 5:2? How did the Jews respond to Moses in Exodus 5:21? Was Moses receiving this flack from these people because he was obeying God or disobeying Him? How did Moses respond in Exodus 5:22? How did the Lord respond to Moses in Exodus 6:1 and following? How do you think you might have reacted to Pharaoh and the people if they responded this way to you? 3. What did God warn Moses about in Exodus 7:3-5? In what ways did this come true? 4. In Exodus 7, how were the Egyptian magicians able to counterfeit the miracles of God? The podcast mentions that Moses and Aaron's age help us answer the question about magic tricks. What was the point that the podcast made about the true source of Moses and Aaron's miracles? 5. The podcast mentioned that the 10 Plagues are excellent examples of spiritual warfare because often Satan seeks to confuse the situation. How did Satan confuse these first plagues and how did Pharaoh and his servants respond? How do people today respond similarly to these kinds of attempts at confusion in their lives? 6. Strength and courage often comes from a strong sense of obedience to God and anticipation that He will work. What commands was Moses obeying in this passage and how was he anticipating the Lord to work? In your day today, are there clear commands from scripture that relate to what you will likely encounter? How might the Lord work in those situations? 7. The podcast mentioned that these plagues all were assaults on the Egyptian false gods. Why did the Jews need to see God's power over Egypt's false gods? What does this show us about God's care and compassion for His people, even when they are struggling in the faith? 8. The podcast mentioned that Hapi was the god of the Nile and fertility. Also, Khnum was the god of the Nile. The Nile was supposed to produce life, but what did it produce instead? How does this show the Lord's power over Hapi, Khnum and also Osiris (who supposedly had the Nile flowing in his bloodstream)? 9. The magicians could turn water into “blood” but could not turn it back. How did this fact demonstrate the reality of Moses' miracles versus the fakery of the magicians? 10. The podcast suggested that the world creates all kinds of fake fantasies to compete with the truth of God. How do people sometimes look at the world's fantasy and think it's more appealing than God's actual truth? 11. Through these miracles, the Lord was calling His people to leave Egypt and not be entangled in their religions. Along these lines, how do His people get entangled in the world today? What is God's call for them today? 12. Although we may not often see God work in such dramatic ways, He does still work in our lives. How have you seen God work in your life? How should that galvanize your own commitment to Him? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! Key Question: What Is A Wilderness Season? A season of life where things are: Difficult Confusing Disorienting Uphill Out of the ordinary Wilderness Seasons are a MAJOR PART of the Christian Walk We anticipate them A WILDERNESS SEASON IS WHERE WE LEARN WHO GOD IS, HOW HE LOVES US, AND HOW WE SHOULD INTERACT WITH HIM 1 Peter 1:6-7 6 You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials 7 so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. This series is about MAKING THE MOST out of these seasons Don't waste pain Learn what God is teaching We will be looking at the TRUE story of the EXODUS The freeing of the people of God (Israel) from captivity in Egypt One of the most powerful stories in human history The story up to this point: Joseph 400 years in Egypt Exodus 1:13-14 13 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly 14 and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. The Exodus story is also Moses' story Placed into a basket on the Nile Rescued by Pharaoh's daughter Raised in Pharaoh's Household Kills an Egyptian taskmaster Flees to the “WILDERNESS” for 40 years Burning Bush God sends him BACK to Egypt The Great Rescue We have a people who are: Oppressed Broken Tired Under Pressure Stuck LOST Step 1 of God's Rescue is: 1: God Promises Freedom Exodus 6 2 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the Lord.' 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as aliens. 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.” 9 Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor. Israel's freedom is found in God (Yahweh) ALONE God is REINTRODUCING himself to his people He reminds them of His promise to their ancestors But the people DO NOT believe They are so broken So LOST How will God free them from the most powerful kingdom in the known world? Step 2 of God's Rescue is: 2: God Confronts Egypt Exodus 7 1 The Lord answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet. 2 You must say whatever I command you; then Aaron your brother must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go from his land. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart and multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you, but I will put my hand into Egypt and bring the military divisions of my people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. 5 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the Israelites from among them.” Egypt was the SUPERPOWER of its day Superpowers think they are untouchable They can do WHATEVER THEY WANT to WHOMEVER THEY WANT God confronts the “gods” of Egypt through the plagues Examples: Turn Nile River to blood – Hapi, the bull god, god of the Nile; Isis, goddess of the Nile; Khnum, ram god, guardian of the Nile Death of livestock – Hathor, goddess with a cow head; Apis, the bull god, symbol of fertility Darkness – Ra, the sun god; Horus, a sun god; Nut, a sky goddess; Hathor, a sky goddess The “gods” of the Egyptians were POWERLESS against the God of Israel At first, they tried to COPY God's power, but they could not and were powerless to stop it Step 3 of God's Rescue is: 3: Israel Chooses to walk out free Exodus 12 33 Now the Egyptians pressured the people in order to send them quickly out of the country, for they said, “We're all going to die!” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls wrapped up in their clothes on their shoulders. 35 The Israelites acted on Moses's word and asked the Egyptians for silver and gold items and for clothing. 36 And the Lord gave the people such favor with the Egyptians that they gave them what they requested. In this way they plundered the Egyptians. God had MADE A WAY Israel still had to choose to LEAVE All they had known All the gods they had known Application: WHAT DOES THIS STORY MEAN FOR US? 1: God Promises Freedom – We Need Freedom Like how Egypt made slaves out of Israel – Sin makes slaves out of us. Romans 6:16 16 Don't you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? Sin… Oppresses us Harms us Kills us The “WILDERNESS OF HUMANITY” is because of sin Some of you are LOST IN THE WILDERNESS because of your sin Your choices Way of thinking Lifestyles Beliefs There are HOLDING YOU CAPTIVE Every wilderness season is NOT because of some hidden sin, but many times it is… Father, please reveal to me any hidden sin, thought pattern or way of living that is not in alignment with your ways 2: God Confronted Egypt – God Confronts lies and breaks strongholds John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jesus came to show us the way through the TRUTH of His life Sin is based on lies… It says… I know what's best for me… This isn't hurting anyone… No one will ever know… Did God really say? In order to free us, God must directly challenge the idols, false assumptions, and lies—whether they originate from within ourselves or from our adversary What does this look like for us? Reading and understanding the Bible (Learning Truth) Sermons and Bible study with others (Hearing Truth) Relationships that can speak TRUTH into your life (Hard Truths) Holy Spirit Conviction 3: Israel Chose to walk out Free – We must choose to walk in God's Freedom Galatians 5:1 For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery. Staying in Egypt meant staying a slave — Staying in our sin means staying its slave When God frees us, we must CHOOSE to walk in that freedom Don't return Don't stay put MOVE! The reason you may be in the wilderness is for God to DEMONSTRATE his POWER and TRUTH to you Can't see it when things are good Our God is a God RESCUES HIS PEOPLE Then and NOW Don't be a slave to LESSER THINGS The START of making it through the wilderness is BREAKING THE HOLD of SIN, LIES, and STRONGHOLDS It is only the POWER, TRUTH, and FREEDOM of God that can give us hope and purpose for our lives and our world

DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: Exodus 7 1. In Exodus 7 we see Moses and Aaron return to Pharaoh and twice make God's request, to let His people the Israelites go and twice we see Pharaoh “harden his heart” and deny the request. In the first encounter God shows his power through a miraculous sign, turning Aaron's staff into a snake. The second encounter Moses and Aaron turn the water of the Nile river into blood. Join us as we dig into these to elements and more… Outline: 00:45 - Recap 05:17 - Exodus 7.1-7 06:18 - I have made you like God to Pharaoh (Ex. 7.1) - Gen. 1.27 - We are image bearers of God, “created in His image” - Matt. 28.18-20 - the great commission - John 14.12 - “whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing” - John 13.34 - “A new command I give you: Love one another” 12:36 - God chooses to work through us. 13:53 - Casting Crowns, “If We Are the Body” 14:38 - I will harden Pharaoh's heart (Ex. 7.3) 19:35 - They will know that I am the Lord (Ex. 7.5) 22:02 - Exodus 7.8-13 (a sign of God) 23:00 - Moses Staff turns into a snake. Check out our brand-new Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon just in time for the Genesis relaunch in January! Ancient Egypt at its Zenith fifteen centuries before Christ was awesome. The Pyramids were over a thousand years old, and stood towering ominously over this proud and powerful people. Ancient Egypt dominated world culture for millennia before being confined to history, with no contemporary traces. Rabbi Dunner explores this curious phenomenon, and offers a wonderful insight as to why the Passover lamb was such an important part of the process of driving a wedge between the Jewish nation and its pagan inclinations.

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show
Like many people, I more or less just hunkered down yesterday and tried to completely ignore the news. Look, I get it, but in my view, there is nothing left to be said about it all. What you believe about January 6th says more about you than it does about what happened that day. If you love Trump, it was a protest. if you hate Trump, it was an insurrection. You're both nuts, but please, continue with your ridiculous ideological purity tests to determine whether I am worthy of being allowed to vote for your candidates. Instead, I spent the day studying various things and the lesson that one of them taught me reminded me of one of my favorite Professors mantra about learning things. It was a titanic shift in my understanding of events and, consequently, my understanding leapt forward. Today, I see something that I had “known” my entire life entirely differently. And maybe someday, when people start actually thinking again, January 6th will be relegated to the dump heap of events, where it actually belongs. This session sets the stage for the Battle of the Gods. The Lord tells Moses that all this is to come against the Egyptian gods in Ex. 12:12. This is what we will see. All the gods of Egypt are nature gods. They are depicted as animals and as men and women. In the ten plaques God attacks these nature gods. It shows the bigger picture that right from the "get go" that the Bible is against deifying nature. This battle is not over since today we see such a deification of nature; the earth among many is called Mother and thus is perhaps deemed in authority over mankind. This is totally against what God told Adam and Eve. Mankind is to rule over nature and not let it overcome us. Nature was made for man. This lesson will take us back to Genesis. This lesson will take us to Revelation. We will see that the lead gods of Egypt, Amun, Re, Atum, Ptah, and Khnum are connected to animals, to beasts. We will see that these beasts, these lead gods, those considered as creator gods, all came out of the sea, the primordial ocean. Other gods, also portrayed as beasts, come out of the land, the earth. But, in Genesis 1:1-2, God created the heavens and the earth. The God of the Bible created nature and the gods of Egypt come out of nature. So, who is God? For the Hebrews coming out of Egypt, they get it. The message in the Torah, God's instruction and not law, is the Lord, יהוה Yahvay, is the one who is over all gods, all the gods of Egypt. This was a huge lesson He needed to teach His chosen people coming out of Egypt. And, this lesson will take us to the book of Revelation. We will again confront beasts. One comes out of the sea and another the earth. It seems this is the final battle. These beasts also are humans; one of the beasts is the anti-Christ. Interesting. The anti-Christ calls himself as god, is to be worshiped, and is also termed as a beast, an animal, a wild animal. This is just like the gods of Egypt and Pharaoh. Thus, it seems to me that the Exodus and the events of Exodus is bigger, much bigger than we thought. Amazing. What else is new? This is God, the Lord, יהוה Yahvay. Rev. Ferret - who is this guy? Exodus 8-11 We are in The World Stream reading through the plagues on Egypt. We are reading from the Good News Translation this week. 7streamsmethod.com | @7Streams Method | @serenatravis | #7Streams Commentary by Dr. Drake Travis "Lord God, we want to be on your side. It is clear that there are those who are for you and those who are against you. The resolve is contrasting and stark. The results of obeying you v.s. fighting you are again, contrasting and stark. It reminds of the lyric of the old hymn, "Savior, we are thine." May it be so. Amen" The Reading today covers plagues 2-9. We saw the Nile turning to blood and will read of the death of all the firstborn next week (1 and 10). It is the bulk of the showdown with the Pharaoh today. The plagues we read about today are frogs, gnats, flies, plague on cattle, boils, hail, locusts, darkness. God used so many plagues and persisted through all ten of them for He wanted to fully prove the haplessness of the gods of Egypt. In last week's reading, the Nile turning to blood, this was God showing supremacy over the Egyptian gods; Khnum- guardian of the Nile, Hopi- spirit of the Nile, and Osiris- the giver of life, whose bloodstream was the Nile. The Egyptians even today confess that the Nile is their life. No Nile => no Egypt. ch. 8 - Today the Frogs plague was a direct insult to the god Heqt ["h-e-q-t"]. Frogs come up out of the Nile for the next seven-day long plague. Egyptians worshiped frogs. Their croaking each spring as the Nile began to recede signified it was time to plant crops. Since the events each year were coincidental, this led to frogs being worshiped. It was springtime and just as rabbits in spring were revered in Rome (thus the persistence of the "Easter bunny" with seculars hoping it overshadows the import of the Easter Holiday itself), so too frogs were worshiped and even associated with fertility. So God had frogs even cover their beds. "So you still want to worship frogs, eh?" God seems to be asking this of the Egyptians. The magicians were able to bring up some frogs. Was that supposed to impress someone? You can make the plague worse, ok, but can you make it better? Note that Pharaoh asked Moses to pray to God to remove the frogs ... tomorrow. Maybe if he had another day, he could solve the problem via his magicians. ? The gnats (mosquitos?) plague is not a direct insult of a god for none were associated with gnats, but it is the first plague that comes without a warning preceding it where Moses and Pharaoh talk first. Did Pharaoh deserve a warning? He had just lied to God/Moses/Aaron... Notice that God had told both Abraham and Jacob that their offspring would be innumerable; like the sand. Well the gnats here are going to be that thick, that innumberable, and plague starts when Moses strikes the ground. Think of trying to get a night's sleep, especially when camping, and there is even one gnat buzzing around your ears. Alone it will keep you awake. Well the Egyptians were immersed in trillions of them. And the magicians confess that it's God's doing. The flies strike next. It is going to be so bad that Moses goes to warn Pharaoh this time. We read "flies" but these are not what we think. We envision 'house-flies'. These are/were what are referred to as 'dog-flies'. Many have heard of 'horse-flies'. Those things bite and leave a mark! The kind they had in Egypt were as angry as hornets. They dive and bite/sting. That is why the Israelites in Goshen are protected. The plague soon brings Egypt to ruin and it's understandable. Biologically, the Frogs, gnats, and flies happening in succession are linked matters but that can be discussed elsewhere. 9 - The plague on the cattle is a direct assault on Egypt's well being and economy and religion. They loved cows. It was entrenched in their minds. (Even Israelites falter in this come Exodus 32 when they make golden calves as idols). hundreds of millions in India worship cows to this day. "Hathor" was the Egyptian mother goddess in shape of a cow, and Apis (ah-PEACE) was the bull-god. He personified "Ptah" ; a creator-god who gave fertility. The Egyptians worshiped cattle --> and God struck the cattle. Don't anyone get mad at God, it was Pharaoh who wouldn't bend here. All the animals in Egypt that belonged to the Egyptians died. The Israelites suffered no loss here. -Soon the boils come on the bodies of the Egyptian people and the animals. They had to have acquired more from neighboring countries and from Israelites since their's had all just died. So they have new cattle, they've just recovered from the biting flies and now ALL cows and people get boils. Perhaps the fly bites are medically linked to getting the boils but it is bad and painful and the magicians would have conjured something except that they are covered with boils too. It is a national mess that is disgusting and beyond. "Imhotep" their impotent god of medicine was proving to be of no use and no contest against the God whom Moses served. -there is no recovery spoken of from the boils and soon the warning of hail coming is delivered to Pharaoh. Egypt had the sky goddess; Nut {"newt"}, Isis; the goddess of life, and Seth; the protector of crops. These gods would prove useless like the others. The warning is given because anything that is left out; slave or animal is going to get pelted to death. Some listen, some don't. The horror of the magnitude of the hail storm drives Pharaoh to a confession to Moses but there is not repentance. 10 - The Locust plague is again a clear statement against the gods Isis and Seth. This time God was determined to finish the contest with all the gods of Egypt. Pharaoh was beyond repenting. God would see to it that the oppressors of Israel were devastated. Pharaoh tries some half measures to negotiate but is stubborn to the bone in the end, again. But it's God's doing and the locusts come and devour everything green that was left in the land from the hail storm. A vast cloud of them swarmed in. Some historians and entymologists (buggie-dudes) said that at night the locusts would rest on the ground in the dark and be 4-5" inches deep squishing under feet. Pharaoh is crushed and comes to ask for prayer but he won't let the Israelites depart. The loss of labor of millions would be even worse to him. The darkness, plague 9, came without warning as did the plagues of boils and gnats. The Egyptian sun gods, Re, Aten, Atum, and Horus were all shown as empty idols. The god Horus is still used as the logo on EgyptAir lines today. He is the falcon head. Well darkness descended and it is a spooky darkness. It's a different type of horror than what the others had brought on. There was no darkness over the Israelites. They had asked to go worship for three days. Pharaoh had said "no" too many times before, so they got darkness for three days. Pharaoh is unbending. 11 - Moses, under God's instruction, goes to Pharaoh and spells out in detail the 10th plague. It will be horrifying and be the greatest blow ever dealt to Egypt in its history. It will affect Pharaoh; the personified god of Egypt. This one will also strike the palace and will leave every home in the country with a lifeless hole in their soul. Pharaoh has been warned thoroughly, and as God has it, Pharaoh will not let the Israelites go. They better brace themselves.

Exodus Chapter 8 A “tipping point” is the critical point in an ongoing situation that leads to a new and irreversible development. The Second Plague: The primordial goddess is dealt with V. 1-15 Last time we saw that the first plague was on the Nile. The Egyptian god Khnum was the Giver of the Nile, the Creator of Mankind. Heket was the Egyptian Primordial Goddess who was represented as a Frog. Primodial means elemental, or __________________. Now perhaps Pharaoh was beginning to realize that each time we defy God, the consequences of our disobedience get increasingly ___________________. Moses knows if Pharaoh picks the time for the plague to stop, and Moses prays at that time and it does stop, it will ______________ be something YHWH has done! Moses had done everything according to the command of the Lord (7:20), and now YHWH was doing according to the word of Moses (8:13). See Psalm 37:4 The Third Plague: The earth gods are dealt with V. 16-19 Geb was the Egyptian god of the earth, styled as a human. Thoth was the Egyptian god of magic, styled as a _________________! When they say, “This is the Finger of God,” I think the “_______________ point” had come. The Fourth Plague: The god of resurrection is dealt with V. 20-32 Khephri was an Egyptian god of resurrection, creation, and movement of the sun; Khepri was styled as a beetle like insect What new wrinkle is added in verses 22-23? What does Pharaoh try to do in verse 25? One way we know biblical repentance is not happening is when someone ______________________ with God instead of throwing themselves on His mercy and doing what God says! Interesting – Moses poll numbers had been terrible with his people back in chapter 5, but he kept obeying God, and now the ________________ has come – it is Pharaoh who is in trouble with his own people! There didn’t need to be any plagues, let alone ten. But when we harden our hearts like Pharaoh, and refuse to repent, God graciously sends the next attempt to get our ___________________
Exodus Chapter 7 God generally gives one or more chances to repent before __________________ comes. Ezekiel 18:32 Romans 2:4 2 Peter 3:9 God is more than able to multitask, and as He acts to deliver Israel He will also be judging the false gods of Egypt. Every _________________ judgment corresponds to a false god Egypt worshipped, including Ruler worship. Egypt is about to see the One True God at work V. 1-7 Pharaoh will do exactly what he wants to as a sinner, and God will let him. Pharaoh will experience the built-in consequences of his sinful _______________, including judgment. God will use these things to let Israel and Egypt know who YHWH is. The unifying theme of the Bible is the __________________________ of God. His glory is seen in all things, including Creation, Redemption, and the Just Judgment of those who don’t repent. How old were Moses and Aaron when they spoke to Pharaoh? The first man-wrought ___________________ in the Bible V. 8-13 What we do not see in the Bible until Exodus chapter 7 is a miracle done directly by a human on behalf of God. This is a little over 2,500 years after creation. Even in the Bible miracles were rare, and are part of _________ events like the Exodus. There are two possibilities for how the sorcerers replicated what Aaron did: Perhaps they did it through the power of ___________________, which is behind almost all so-called magic tricks. Or perhaps they did it through the power of ________________ forces, which is also a reality on earth. (Revelation 13:11-14) What Pharaoh doesn’t know is that God’s moment has come, and from now on Pharaoh will be the one on the _______________, even when he thinks he is on offense! The First Plague: The gods of the Nile are dealt with V. 14-25 The Nile is not the largest river in the world, but it is the ___________________. It is 4,132 miles. Only the Amazon river is also 4,000 miles (and is the largest). Khnum was considered the giver of the Nile and Creator of mankind. He was depicted as a human with a ram’s head. It’s no surprise the True Creator began the plagues with judgment on the ________________ creator! Who stretched his staff out over the Nile? Who struck the waters and turned them into blood? Now what do you suppose Moses’ frame of mind was at the end of chapter 7 in comparison to the end of chapter 6? Perhaps when ungodly people act toward us as God has said they would act toward us, we should say under our breath, “God told me it would be like this!” “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” -Jesus in John 16:33 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” -2 Timothy 3:12
Dr. Alim El-Bey: "ORIGIN OF BLOOD & HOW TO EAT RIGHT FOR YOUR BLOOD TYPE"
Foundational Truths: The Bible is God’s self-revelation.God is the Eternal, Sovereign Creator; all that He creates is good.Man is a responsible agent, held to a moral standard.Sin originates within a person, separating us from God.God declares one righteous by faith alone, apart from works.Spiritual Warfare is all throughout the Bible. We have seen this in Genesis 3 with the serpent and in Genesis 6 with the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men.” This subject is not just confined to the Ephesians 6:11-20. In Exodus, Moses is called to be YHWH’s spokesman before Pharaoh, a man in Egyptian culture deemed to be the personification of the gods’ rule. The “gods” are fallen celestial beings who have temporary rulership over this earth, of which “Satan” is one (Ezekiel 28:11-19).Important: Every “god” that we encounter in Egypt fits in the category of “the continuity of being” (see “The Framework Approach” Chart), meaning that men can become gods, or that the gods are like men and women. Anytime we see a graphic depiction, it is a mixture of man and animal/reptile/insect, etc. YHWH sets Himself apart, being the sovereign, eternal, and omnipotent Creator.Psalm 82:1-8. There is a cosmic conflict in the spiritual realm. YHWH is supreme, being the Creator, while all other “gods” are answerable to Him and accountable for how they govern the nations of the earth. A “council” is assembled (v.1). YHWH accuses the gods of ruling in an unjust way, showing partiality to the wicked. He calls on them to tend to the weak, afflicted, and fatherless. They are to have compassion! YHWH’s evaluation of the gods and their rule is that they operate in darkness. Though they are called “the sons of God,” and though they have high-accountability for governing in righteousness, they have failed, leaving YHWH no choice but condemn them (v. 7). YHWH has the right to judge, not just as the Creator, but as the One who will “possess” (“shall inherit”-NKJV, ESV) the nations (v.8). Exodus 5:1-2. Moses and Aaron obey YHWH and appear before Pharaoh asking for the release of the Israelites, that they may worship YHWH at Mount Horeb. Pharaoh’s response is telling: Pharaoh was worshiped as a god, along with many other gods (as we will see). But he had never heard of YHWH. Why should he obey Him?This “interruption” causes Pharaoh to increase the workload of the Israelite slaves, causing greater oppression. This result discourages the Israelites from listening to Moses (Ex 5:21).Exodus 6:1-8. The NASB translators have mishandled v.3. It is not that YHWH did not make Himself known to the patriarchs, but it should be translated, “Did I not make myself known to them?” Meaning that YHWH revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob clearly and communicated with them clearly. The “covenant” (Abrahamic) and the “land” are mentioned testifying to YHWH’s faithfulness (v.4-5). Between 6:6-8, there are eight “I will” statements that YHWH declares. He alone will deliver His people and He alone will bring them into the land.Exodus 7:4-5. The judgments of God would be executed upon Egypt and the people of Israel would be set free. The “unknown YHWH” would be known in Egypt and would be revered by the nations! The Framework Approach Handout Exodus 7:17-25. This first act of YHWH against Egypt strikes at five of its gods, all of which are affiliated with the Nile River. This plague halted the ability to wash clothes or dishes, bathe, drink water, and to eat fish. This would also stop the transportation of goods by boat, leaving each community short on supplies. In Egypt, the Nile River was connected to everything!Osiris was believed to be the guarantor of eternal life, who allowed for the annual flooding of the Nile. It has actually been said that the Nile served as his bloodstream.Hapi is a water and fertility god who controlled the Nile. When it would flood, the Egyptians would set out statues of Hapi and throw offerings for him into the waters.Khnum was the guardian of the Nile and the molder of people and gods, believed to be fashioned by clay on a potter’s wheel.Sobek is depicted as a man with a crocodile’s head and is the one who brings order to creation and fertility to the land. He is also called “the Lord of the Waters.” Blood in the Nile would have driven the crocodiles away from the waters and into the cities of Egypt. Crocodiles were worshiped in Egypt, and much like India and their view of cows today, the people would not harm them for fear of hurting a god and incurring his wrath.Neith is a goddess who is the creator of the world, the mother of Ra (the sun god) and Sobek, and cared for the largest fish in the Nile known as “lates.” With blood in the water, all of the lates died.It is obvious that “spiritual forces” are at play (“secret arts,” 7:22), allowing the magicians of Pharaoh to imitate the signs of YHWH. What we are seeing is YHWH vs. the lesser gods.We must keep in mind that for Egypt, religion, worship, idols, offerings, and “gods” were a way of life, and not just a small piece. YHWH is demonstrating His omnipotence against all that the Egyptians trusted in and held dear. He is shaking their lives!Exodus 8:1-15. The second plague involves an infestation of frogs from the Nile. This is an attack against Heqet, the goddess of fertility and renewal. This goddess has the head of a frog and the body of a woman. While Pharaoh’s magicians imitated the plague by bringing more frogs, only Moses was able to stop them by interceding to YHWH for Pharaoh. At his request, and with the promise that the Israelites would be released (v.8), Moses called upon Pharaoh to give the time for the end of the frogs. This added greater accountability to Pharaoh. The frogs died, were gathered in piles, and began to rot. Their death shows the power of YHWH over Heqet.Exodus 8:16-19. The third plague turned the dust of Egypt into gnats, infesting every person and animal in Egypt. This plague attacked Geb, the god of the earth, who is depicted as a man with a goose on his head. YHWH changes the dust of the earth into a drove of flesh- eating, blood-sucking insects that feast upon the Egyptians. The magicians could not imitate this plague, exclaiming to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God” (v.19). This confession denotes the supernaturalas they have never known it, “figuratively conveying a sense such as ‘something easy enough for him to do with just a finger.’[1]Exodus 8:20-32. The fourth plague involves swarms of flies that lays the land to waste, covering everything (v.24). YHWH attacks the god Khepri, who is the most famous of the (multiple) insect gods, depicted with a man’s body with a scarab for a head. This time things are different: Israel is “set apart” and the flies do not touch them (v.22), Pharaoh tells Moses and Aaron to go and sacrifice to YHWH, but tries to put restrictions on their ability to worship freely (v.25-26), Pharaoh tries to dictate the distance that Israel will travel, violating the theology of sacred space (v.28b),[2] and Moses warns Pharaoh not to act in deceit by breaking his word (v.29b).With such destruction in place, would YHWH ever have mercy on Egypt? After the time of the Exodus, Egypt goes unmentioned again until the time of Solomon, due to their decimation. What YHWH had done to Egypt was known throughout the world (Josh 2:9-12). Would YHWH’s anger toward Egypt burn forever?Isaiah 19:18-25. One day, YHWH will call Egypt “My People,” alongside Israel and Assyria, who at the time of Isaiah’s writing were the enemies of Israel. Notice the use of “in that day” repeatedly. There will come a day when YHWH will embrace Egypt as His own, not consigning them to destruction like Canaan, but showing kindness and mercy to them, giving them a place in the future reign of Jesus Christ, who is also their Savior and Champion (19:20).Let us marvel at His infinite power and mercy! [1] Douglas K. Stuart, Exodus, vol. 2, The New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 2006), p. 212.[2] This refers to worshiping only in the place that YHWH has deemed fit.
In 2016 there was an attempted coup in Turkey. This led to many people who the government saw as opposition figures being sacked from their jobs and in some cases held without trial. They include prominent intellectuals, medics and scientists. In recent days there has been a similar crackdown on people voicing criticism of Turkey's current military actions in Syria. Stephen Reichter, Professor of Psychology at St Andrews University has been to Turkey to observe the trial of one of his former colleagues. He tells us what he saw and discusses the wider issues for science. It's the 60 years since the launch of Explorer 1 and the discovery of the Van Allen Belts. This was the satellite the US launched in response to Sputnik. However unlike Sputnik it did undertake scientific exploration, its findings have been significant for every space mission that followed. Using DNA sequencing scientists have found that the 'Two Brothers' mummies at the Manchester Museum have different fathers so are, in fact, half-brothers. Khnum-nakht and Nakht-ankh - date to around 1800 BC. Ever since their discovery in 1907 there has been some debate amongst Egyptologists on whether the two were actually related at all. DNA was extracted from their teeth to solve the mystery. And the science of the Archers, a current storyline involves leaks of industrial chemicals illegally buried on a farm many years ago. We'll be looking behind the scenes to see where the story came from and how the world's longest running soap opera ensures scientific accuracy. This week's programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell as Adam is away.

Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.’ But they say, ‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
