Dhruv and Cris take a minor detour from the endlessly mysterious world(s) of David Lynch to a somewhat more familiar one in their second (of they don't know how many) eps on David Lynch. And joining them is a returning guest, Arijit Paul, who is thankful to Lynch (especially his work in "Eraserhead") for not only inspiring him to pursue a career in (film) sound but also for validating his love for cigarettes. We listen to Arijit's wonderfully strange stories of discovering Lynch and the strange memories his films inspire in him before talking in detail about one of Lynch's more "conventional" movies -- "The Elephant Man" (1980), which both Dhruv and Cris are decidedly more mixed on than Arijit. Listen to the full episode to hear them talk about why they love half the movie and not the entirety of it and why David Lynch -- even minus all the bursts of surrealism -- is an incredible filmmaker. Dhruv and Cris are entering the endlessly mysterious world(s) of David Lynch for the first time (of many!) this year. And joining them, in his very first (QID) outing, is Devarsi Ghosh (@devarsighosh), a film journalist doubling as their Lynch guide for this trip to Lynch's nightmarish evocation of Philadelphia in his feature-length debut film, "Eraserhead" (1977).Before reaching there, however, they all describe their introductions to Lynch Land, what it feels like being there, and why nobody can even come close to creating a similar feeling of that today. (They do question if they themselves are “grumpy cynics," but that's only to conclude that that's the only appropriate response to have given the drek they're served up today). Listen to the full episode to hear them then talk about their experience of "Eraserhead" - intended very much NOT as an “ending explained” breakdown of it; the objective - throughout all our episodes on Lynch's films - will be to preserve the mystery of his works, not undermine it!Regardless, major spoilers for “Eraserhead”!TIME CODES Introductions to David Lynch: [00:00 - 31:51]The "Dune" Caveat: [31:51 - 34:05]Impossibility of "Intuitive" Filmmaking Today: [34:05 - 56:06]"Eraserhead" (1977): [56:06 - 01:46:18]Outro: [01:46:18 - 01:50:47]TEXT REFERENCED REPEATEDLY"Room to Dream" (David Lynch & Kristine McKenna).AUDIO/VIDEO EXCERPTS REFERENCED EXTENSIVELY1. 2025 m. sausio 15 dieną mirė amerikiečių kino režisierius Davidas Lynchas. Kam D. Lynchui viso to reikėjo? Ved. Lynch's lyrical, intimate, and unfiltered personal reflections riff off biographical sections written by close collaborator Kristine McKenna and based on more than one hundred new interviews with surprisingly candid ex-wives, family members, actors, agents, musicians, and colleagues in various fields who all have their own takes on what happened. David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) remains an unrivaled enigma in the history of cinema, a cult film that launched the career of one of Hollywood’s most enduring outsiders. The process of making the film, detailed in Lynch’s 2018 memoir Room to Dream (co-written with Kristine McKenna), reflects the complicated intersection of individual vision and economic reality that would define Lynch’s path as a filmmaker. But do these cultural and economic conditions even exist anymore? Musician, writer, and fellow Lynch-head Tyler Scruggs joins us to talk about Eraserhead’s unique production and cultural legacy, in a conversation that explores authorship, adaptation, consciousness, and what it means to be an artist in the digital era.

Thank you so much for tuning in! In this episode, I thought we could reflect on a few of the core topics that makes us human: self-care and mental health strategies. The Northeast Kidney Foundation and I want you to know that it’s okay and to give yourself permission to feel how you are. We want to give YOU strategies to overcome, empathize and move through these challenging times. Listen in this week, as I am joined by the Attending Pediatric Transplant Psychologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Kristine McKenna in order to explore these care strategies. Dr. McKenna’s Questions – 1.) Tell us about yourself – what drew you to the field of Psychology and how do you continuously aim to make a difference?I always knew that I wanted to help others. I was planning a career in the Oncology field to help patients cope with treatments and painful procedures. I began to feel drawn to the questions beyond the clinic such as: quality of life, explaining to their peers / parenting a child in the context of chronic illness. Later, after additional training, an opportunity arose at Boston Children’s Hospital in the field of transplant medicine and I wanted to help children through this process.2.) How would you explain the topic of Mental Health and what therapy is subsequently like? There is the field of psychotherapy or “talk therapy” where patients will undergo treatment for mental health concerns that are significantly impacting their daily life. The goal of therapy is to improve quality of life or overcome those obstacles and feel a sense of confidence. Providers will undergo training in fields such as: Psychiatry, Social Workers and Psychologists. We want to explore their goals as individuals so they can develop that positive view of themselves. We want them to put that “winter coat” on to feel warm and reach out to their healthcare provider.3.) How do we establish a trusting relationship between patient and provider and how do we gauge this interaction given it can be so sensitive? The technical term for this is the “Therapeutic Alliance” which encompasses the caregiving and relationship aspects along with what is discussed. It’s a good time to analyze this relationship and try to find a provider that matches your needs. It’s creating a safe space with a fluid focus and navigating it together. Confidentiality is key and these aspects are discussed early on in the relationship.4.) How do we as a transplant community continue to perpetuate these messages of support and positivity and how do you as a provider derive fulfillment from that? This is a highlight on stressors that have been recurring long-term in addition to this pandemic environment. One of the core aspects of well-being is self-care. We need to emphasize the re-charge mechanism in our bodies (i.e. relaxation techniques or mindfulness strategies). There are old / new hobbies, reaching out to your healthcare team or even sleep hygiene that every transplant patient and their family uses discover the energy to perform these necessary tasks. 5.) How can we take strides to really put together the before, during and after this challenging time as a worldwide? These large events can be difficult. Individual and community stress can run high. Maximization of our support networks and building resilience are important as we give ourselves credit and recognize that these emotions are valid. We will build a toolkit that we can use now and, in the future, as we navigate these times together. Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. This book is also a treat for music lovers: everybody knows how important music and sound have been in David Lynchís art, and his autobiography offers a glimpse into a very peculiar time of Americaís pop culture, when blues, folk, jazz, and the early days of TV and rock íní roll would shape young peopleís mind and aspirations. As you will have understood, weíve made this mix based on some of the most significant songs mentioned in ìRoom to Dreamî; our image is based on Arthur Irving Gates' book "Good Times on Our Street", which apparently made an impression on David's mind when he was a kid.01 Four Aces - Three Coins in a Fountain02 Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender (Ed Sullivan Show, 09/09/1956)03 Fred Steiner - Perry Mason Opening Theme04 The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Blue Round a la Turk05 Cyril J. On the surface, Brad Bird’s new animated family adventure INCREDIBLES 2 wouldn’t seem to have a lot in common with Guy Hamilton’s swingin’ 1964 James Bond entry GOLDFINGER, but superhero films and spy movies are actually pretty closely thematically related, as we discover in our comparison of the two films. After discussing our reactions to INCREDIBLES 2, a follow-up to what one of us calls “a perfect movie,” we look at how these two very different versions of 1960s heroism compare in their evolution (and establishment) of familiar tropes, in their respective wish-fulfillment fantasies, and in how they handle extraordinary individuals with a license to kill. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about GOLDFINGER, INCREDIBLES 2, or both by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Homesick for Another World (Penguin Press) Ottessa Moshfegh's debut novel Eileen was one of the literary events of 2015. Garlanded with critical acclaim, it was named a book of the year by The Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle, nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award, short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, and won the PEN/Hemingway Award for debut fiction. But as many critics noted, Moshfegh is particularly held in awe for her short stories. Homesick for Another World is the rare case where an author's short story collection is if anything more anticipated than her novel. And for good reason. There's something eerily unsettling about Ottessa Moshfegh's stories, something almost dangerous, while also being delightful, and even laugh-out-loud funny. Her characters are all unsteady on their feet in one way or another; they all yearn for connection and betterment, though each in very different ways, but they are often tripped up by their own baser impulses and existential insecurities. Homesick for Another World is a master class in the varieties of self-deception across the gamut of individuals representing the human condition. But part of the unique quality of her voice, the echt Moshfeghian experience, is the way the grotesque and the outrageous are infused with tenderness and compassion. Moshfegh is our Flannery O'Connor, and Homesick for Another World is her Everything That Rises Must Converge or A Good Man is Hard to Find. The flesh is weak; the timber is crooked; people are cruel to each other, and stupid, and hurtful. But beauty comes from strange sources. And the dark energy surging through these stories is powerfully invigorating. We're in the hands of an author with a big mind, a big heart, blazing chops, and a political acuity that is needle-sharp. The needle hits the vein before we even feel the prick. Praise for Eileen "Eileen is anything but generic. Eileen is as vivid and human as they come... Moshfegh, whose novella, ‘McGlue,' was published last year, writes beautiful sentences. One after the other they unwind--playful, shocking, wise, morbid, witty, searingly sharp. The beginning of this novel is so impressive, so controlled yet whimsical, fresh and thrilling, you feel she can do anything... There is that wonderful tension between wanting to slow down and bathe in the language and imagery, and the impulse to race to see what happens, how it happens.” -New York Times Book Review “The attention that is now greeting Moshfegh’s first novel is not undeserved. Eileen is a remarkable piece of writing, always dark and surprising, sometimes ugly and occasionally hilarious. Its first-person narrator is one of the strangest, most messed-up, most pathetic—and yet, in her own inimitable way, endearing—misfits I’ve encountered in fiction. Trust me, you have never read anything remotely like Eileen.” -Washington Post “Her best work yet . . . What makes Moshfegh an important writer—and I'd even say crucial—is that she is unlike any other author (male, female, Iranian, American, etc.). And this sui generis quality is cemented by the singular savage suburban noir of Eileen . . . Here is art that manages to reject artifice and yet be something wholly new and itself in sheer artistry.” - The Los Angeles Times “Wonderfully unsettling first novel . . . When the denouement comes, it’s as shocking as it is thrilling. Part of the pleasure of the book (besides the almost killing tension) is that Eileen is mordantly funny . . . this tale belongs to both the past and future Eileen, a truly original character who is gloriously unlikable, dirty, startling—and as ferociously human as the novel that bears her name.”-San Francisco Chronicle “Charmingly disturbing. Delightfully dour. Pleasingly perverse. These are some of the oxymorons that ran through my mind as I read Eileen, Ottessa Moshfegh's intense, flavorful, remarkable new novel. ‘Funny awful’ might be another one. I marveled at myself for enjoying the scenes I was witnessing, and wondered what dark magic the author had employed to make me smile at them.” -NPR.ORG Ottessa Moshfegh received the Plimpton Prize for her stories in the Paris Review, and was granted a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. Her novella, McGlue, won the inaugural Fence Modern Prize in Prose and the Believer Book Award. Eileen won her the PEN Hemingway Award for debut fiction. Her newest collection of short-stories, Homesick for Another World, will be published by the Penguin Press in January 2017. She currently lives in Los Angeles. Kristine McKenna is a Los Angeles based writer. Her biography of David Lynch, Life & Work, will be published by Random House in 2017.
Robert Kensinger moved to L.A. in the late 70's. He was hoping to make it as a film director after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design. He stumbled into a job as a personal assistant to the legendary actor, writer, and director Orson Welles. Kensinger worked for Welles off and on for several years before he left to write scripts for indie producer Roger Corman. Then he carved out a long career as a set decorator on many studio films. People tend to think of Orson Welles as inactive or diminished during those final years – living off Laurel Canyon on Wonderland Avenue, earning a living starring in wine commercials and making the rounds of TV talk shows. But Kensinger remembers the director of Citizen Kane as vital and alive, working hard as ever on projects including his last film, The Other Side of the Wind. It remains unfinished to this day. Today's Organist features Bob Kensinger, remembering Orson on Wonderland. Produced by Gideon Brower and Kristine McKenna. Edited by Nick White. Mixing assistance by Mario Diaz. Still from a TV magic show pilot Welles shot, in which Bob Kensinger appears as a waiter. Documents from Bob Kensinger's tenure as Welles's assistant, including shopping lists and a personal note. The Plum in Mr Blum's Pudding (Penny Ante Editions) “My hours of leisure I spent in reading the best authors, ancient and modern, being always provided with a good number of books; and when I was ashore, in observing the manners and dispositions of the people, as well as learning their language; wherein I had a great facility, by the strength of my memory.” - Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels The Plum in Mr. Blum's Pudding is Los Angeles native Tosh Berman's first printed collection of poetry. In 1989, Berman left the United States behind, moving to Japan after learning his wife's (artist Lun*na Menoh) mother was ill in Kitakyushu. The Plum in Mr. Blum's Pudding was penned while both rapt and lost by this transition. Gracefully toiling between the quirky and earnest, these poems describe the liminal space of the foreigner caught between the strange and the familiar. The result is surreal and unclassifiable, a book of love poems overshadowed by isolation and underscored with curiosity and lust. Originally published in 1990 by “Cole Swift & Sons” (Japan) as a small hardcover edition of two hundred copies, this new edition acts to preserve this work and features an introduction by art critic and curator Kristine McKenna and an afterword by Ruth Bernstein. Tosh Berman is a publisher and writer. His press, TamTam Books, has published works by Boris Vian, Guy Debord, Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Mesrine, artist Lun*na Menoh, and Ron Mael & Russell Mael (Sparks). He is the author of Sparks-tastic: 21 Nights with Sparks in London. As the son of artist Wallace Berman, Tosh has delivered talks and various essays toward furthering his late father's artistic legacy including his influential folio series, Semina (1955–1964). He resides in Los Angeles. Ruth Bernstein lives in Highland Park where she writes postcards and collects books.
