This week we're all over the map. What a shock! Please vote for our show in the 19th Annual Podcast Awards (www.podcastawards.com)AP started (and ended) her rap career and has an important question for bedsheet manufacturers in the US. Megan gives us some reading recommendations and prepares for losing her right hand. And Amy tells of her GenX concert adventure on a school night. We also delve into a conversation about a certain nail company that we like, and it ends up sounding more and more like an ad. We promise, as of July 2, 2024, we do not have a deal with them. So, grab your canned espresso martini, and join us where… The Sideshow begins. Be sure to listen to the episode of The Activity Continues that followed this discussion. That one is our last Chilly Chat episode. I'll be on the parent panel on the 19th talking about stress reduction and caregiver well being. Register here.  Head over to podcastawards.com and nominate Once Upon a Gene for The People's Choice Award under the Society-Culture category. Disorder: The Rare Disease Film Festival was supposed to be held in May and was cancelled due to COVID. These films are important in connecting families and researchers across the world. Bo Bigelow and Daniel DeFabio, the founders of the film festival, launched The Disorder Channel. It's available for free on Roku and Amazon Fire.  I discovered the passionate and driven Taylor Kane through the book she wrote called Rare Like Us, a memoir about her loving father dying from a rare disorder called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It's an incredible story and captures the insurmountable obstacles families in the rare disease community face. She is also the founder of Remember The Girls, an international nonprofit organization that unites, educates and empowers female carriers of x-linked genetic disorders. She's recently been nominated for an award in the category of patient leader hero. You can endorse her nomination here.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS When did you decide to write Rare Like Us? I always had in the back of my mind that I would write a book and tell my story. I finally started my freshman year of college, very slowly. I did a lot of research, went through a lot of documents and had a lot of conversations with my mom which helped me to capture the time that he was sick. I was only three years old when he was diagnosed and he passed away when I was 5 years old, so I didn't have a clear memory of everything that happened in that time. I remember my dad being sick and when he passed away, but I didn't know all the details and all the ways my mom suffered throughout that time. The book took about three and a half years to write from start to finish and it was published in August 2019. Can you tell us about your dad's diagnosis? My dad started having small behavioral changes. He was very neat, talkative, outgoing and never missed a beat. My mom started noticing things like his desk getting messy, they were arguing more, and he was getting more forgetful. They started going to marriage counseling and the counselor suggested that he get an MRI of his brain because of the random behavioral changes. He got an MRI and within a few days was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). There's no treatment or cure and he only had a few years left. It was all very sudden and out of nowhere. Looking back, he did have some of the physical symptoms such as walking difficulties.  What does it mean to be a carrier of ALD? ALD is an x-linked recessive disease which means it's carried on the x chromosome. Since my dad had it, I'm 100% a carrier of the disease because men give their only x chromosome to their daughters. I have a 50% chance of passing the disease down to any children I have in the future. Female children would be carriers and male children would get the disease. There's also a high chance that I'll eventually develop physical symptoms of ALD. Over 90% of carriers eventually develop symptoms. As of now, I don't think I have related symptoms, but that does increase as I get older. There was an assumption that since women have two x chromosomes, the healthy one would make up for the deficiencies of the one with the mutation. We know now that's not true and the same goes for all x-linked disease. Women have experienced symptoms as long as the disease has existed, but we're only just now getting into carrier related advocacy. In 2017, I formed my own nonprofit foundation called Remember The Girls, which is dedicated to carriers of x-linked disorders. It is one-of-a-kind and the only group that has ever brought x-lined carriers of different diseases together. We face a lot of the same issues with our symptoms being misunderstood and the difficulties that comes with having kids and alternative reproduction. We have about 30 or so x-linked diseases represented in our group, some more rare than others, and we have over 600 members from every continent in the world.  A big part of your organization is creating community and having strength in numbers. What are some other goals you have for the organization? Breaking the carrier stigma is an overarching mission. So many of us have been told that because we're just carriers, we don't have anything to worry about and it's frustrating. Right now we're focused on developing a provider network and  developing a family planning toolkit. The provider network will be a searchable database of carrier-friendly doctors, clinicians and mental health professionals recommended by the women in our group. The family planning toolkit will provide carriers with the options and resources available for having a family.  What are you most proud of with Remember The Girls? The organization is the only one like it that exists. We have a strong board of directors, a medical advisory board with three doctors and three genetic counselors and I think the organization is strong despite being new. I'm most proud of the awareness the organization has raised. As the leader of the organization and as an advocate, my own biggest accomplishment is when i get a message from someone who felt alone until they found the group. I get those messages and the world stops for a minute when I realize I've created something that people need and find comfort in.  What can people do to help your cause? Support Remember The Girls on social media. People can make donations to us to support our projects and help our organization grow. And spread the word about us to someone you know who is a carrier.  LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED NORD Living Rare, Living Stronger 2020 Registration https://rarediseases.org/living-rare-forum/ Rare Like Us https://www.amazon.com/Rare-Like-Us-Finding-Plagued/dp/1543978819 15th Annual Podcast Awards https://www.podcastawards.com/ The Disorder Channel https://www.thedisordercollection.com/ Disorder: The Rare Disease Film Festival https://www.rarediseasefilmfestival.com/ WEGO Health Award Nomination https://www.wegohealth.com/Taylor3/awards Remember The Girls PayPal Giving Fund https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2806211 CONNECT WITH TAYLOR KANE Remember The Girls https://www.rememberthegirls.org/ Blog  https://www.rememberthegirls.org/blog Facebook https://www.facebook.com/remembergirls/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rememberthegirls/ Twitter https://twitter.com/remember_girls TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify Apple Podcasts Stitcher Overcast CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast/?hl=en Built Ford Tough Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1877643259173346/

To do this I am joined by someone who's job it is to inspire curiosity in people around the world, Cody Gough! Cody Gough is the executive producer and co-host of Curiosity Daily, an award-winning daily science podcast from Curiosity.com. **Note: It's that time of year when you can nominate the Sea Hawkers Podcast in the Sports category of the 14th Annual Podcast Awards. Go to podcastawards.com to register and submit for our show to compete as the top sports podcast.   Continuing our Know Your Rival series, this week we discuss the third place team from the NFC West in 2018. The San Francisco 49ers are hoping for a full season out of their starting quarterback this year after losing him early in the season due to an injury. Oscar of the Better Rivals podcast joins us to let us know that Handsome Jimmy will be expected to run out of bounds this year. We start by taking a look at the defense, and the 49ers have a clear strength on their defensive line with five first round picks including the number two overall pick in 2019. We discuss whether it will be enough to make up for some of the deficiencies in the secondary and where some of the biggest concerns are when it comes to San Francisco's defense. Special teams also has a number of questions considering their franchise kicker is holding out and we get Oscar's take on selecting a punter in the fourth round of the draft. To top it all off, their long snapper got popped for PED use! On offense, they looked for more help at wide receiver early on in the draft as well as through free agency. The have a strong group of running backs and a competent offensive line. Will that line be able to keep Jimmy healthy enough for a full season and will the young receivers develop into a solid unit. We get Oscar's take on all of the new faces. After backing up their talk (and also my talk last week) the U.S. Women are World Cup Champions and earn the Better at Life honors on this week's show. Kam Chancellor announced recently that he is stepping away from the game of football due to a potential risk for paralysis if he continues to play. While the news wasn't unexpected after hearing for months about the possibility this announcement could be coming, it still doesn't make it easier for fans of Bam Bam. From his sideline hit of Vernon Davis to his biggest moments in the playoffs, Kam has a long list of memorable plays from his eight seasons in a Seahawks uniform. Adam and Brandan take a look at his most memorable plays over the years and reflect on his contributions to the team and the physical nature of his play that made him such a fun player to watch. Following the announcement, Seattle Times columnist Larry Stone wrote a piece saying he has a "nagging sense of guilt" when thinking about the potential long-term impacts on a player's health. Adam talks about his own experience of managing risk within his work environment and how it relates to how he views the issue. In the end, was it a bad decision by the team to extend Kam? In the second half of the show, one listener has a message for Adam and the perceived disrespect toward the hosts of the Rams Podcast on the previous show. Other listeners have suggestions on things to consider with the upcoming bet between the two shows. One of the hosts and a bunch of NFL writers need to do better, and better at life honors go to a multi-billionaire who is solving problems that come up in the news and to Kam Chancellor in recognition for his Seahawks career. Always remember to be genuine and up front about your intentions. First, Let Me Explain. I love podcasting. I love it so much for what it is, my voice and your ears. I love it for what it has given me, which is a direction for my life and my business. From close friends, I have gained to the connections to people from every corner of the planet. Finally, I am grateful for what the platform allows me to give to others in the form of enjoyable and educational content. April 2, 2014, I ended my life long journey of working at my family's $100 Million business without a clue as to what I was going to do to support my wife and I. I went back to school to try to figure it out and started going to networking meetings to potentially find a path. One month later I was on a plane to Disney World and thanks to a friend on the plane I was inspired to start the Dreamers Podcast which three years later would transition into The Business Podcast. I built on the fact that I started blogging back in 1996 as a kid and never stopped. Content creation and bringing people together has always been my goal. Towards the end of 2014, I even started up the Mid-Atlantic Podcast Conference which has been growing year over year since. I've given tons of talks across the country both advocating for people to find and pursue their dreams, grow their business, and pushing for others to create their own content to connect with others and create a movement. I've written four books with the first three being critically acclaimed self-development books and the fourth coming out on March 2, 2018. Podcasting means the world to me and I could not imagine my life without it. I have always experimented with trying new things on my show. From doing the show five days a week for four months back when I was just getting started, to have a pre-show in front of my guest interviews, to doing topic shows and so much more. I always push my fellow podcasters to own the fact that their show is theirs and they shouldn't allow others to dictate how long an episode should be or what it should be about (within reason of staying cohesive with the brand you are creating). Over the nearly four years of podcasting I always get the same question: but how do you make any money from doing a podcast? I explain to them that from my show I have made almost zero dollars. Because of my podcast I have been able to make a living, a successful business and a brand revolving around what I love to do. Are You An Independent Podcaster? Learn more Join us at our next event! What Is Changing? My time is light years away from where it once was four years ago. Going from having a wife to becoming a family of four has changed my expectations for what I need to accomplish in my allotted time and the amount of money my time is worth has greatly increased over the last four years. Another thing that has changed is the direction and mission of my podcast. I changed the name to The Business Podcast shortly after winning Business Podcast of the year from the 12th Annual Podcast Awards to better reflect the topic of my show. While my show started out as a self-development show, over the course of the years it morphed into a show about business. Which is a topic that I am endlessly passionate about? The podcast will still be released every Tuesday at 8 AM EST. Going forward I am creating four separate series for my show going forward. If you are subscribed to the show already, you don't need to change anything. The new name and cover art will appear right in your feed just as it always will. In this episode, my wife Melissa and brother Matt join me to discuss this amazing run as the Dreamers Podcast over the last 3.5 years. Including the fact that Dreamers Podcast took home the Business Award for the 12th Annual Podcast Awards (click the link for a video of me crying). The new show will be the same as Dreamers Podcast, so nothing to worry about any big changes. Just a new name, artwork and intro/outro music. With very little news about the team this past week, apart from Russell Wilson's diet and announcement regarding his passing academy, we launch into "Rivals Month." Kicking of the series is the Rams Podcast with James and Bear. The guys get into the latest All of Nothing series launched recently and Brandan talks about some of the more interesting highlights and surprises from the series. **Note: Please go to seahawkerspodcast.com/vote and put us in the finals for the 12th Annual Podcast Awards.  Just one season after moving to Los Angeles, a lot is changing with the Rams this year. Jeff Fisher is out and now they have the youngest coach in the league. Who is Sean McVay and does he have the vision it takes to build a winning football franchise? Some of his latest moves seem to suggest he does, and he also decided to keep around a coach who has helped burn the Seahawks more than once. As far as predictions for the season, Adam gets into why he believes the Rams might earn the second-best record in the division. The guys close out by talking about a potential bet for the 2017 season. Brandan thinks James' hype around 3rd round pick Cooper Kupp is overrated. In the second half of the show, Peter King gets a 'do better' for dogging one of America's favorite holiday past times and another goes to the ESPN beat writer for the Arizona Cardinals. Better at life honors go to scientists for finding a new positive use for robotics and a Seahawks defensive lineman continues to dominate the offseason with his work off the field. In what is probably our most random and disorganized podcast ever, Jason and I live-cast the 10th Annual Podcast Awards announcement ceremony. What’s the funniest Douglas Adams quote? Who’s the oldest Beatle? Did we actually win the Entertainment category? Tune in to find out. P.S. – This show was totally off the cuff. If that’s...

TWD S4 is coming up and in preparation, we go back and review the first eight episodes of season three. I was surprised at how much more I got out of the season by binge watching. In particular I think I understand much more clearly what was going on in the Governor's twisted brain. Listen in as I lay it out for you and go over all the bits of foreshadowing and other elements that take on a new significance when viewed as a whole. And have you checked out the guest and events lists for the upcoming Walker Stalker Convention we've been going on about? Here are a few highlights:* Norman Reedus* Lauren Cohan* Greg Nicotero* Giancarlo Esposito (Gus from Breaking Bad)* Sarah Wayne Callies* Laurie Holden* A concert from Emily Kinney* A podcast panel with us, The Walker Stalkers, The Talking Dead, and Watching Dead (and we're working on setting up a meetup with you guys too)* Tons more. Seriously, those are some of the highlights, but there's a lot more going on too. You can find out more and get tickets at walkerstalkercon.com. Karen and I will be hosting many of the Q&A sessions and we would love to see a whole bunch of you out there. And finally, the 9th Annual Podcast Awards is fast approaching. I’ve really fallen behind in getting Succotash episodes out the door so apologies to those of you who have been trained by decades of televison and radio with their regular release of content. I’d love to be more on top of the release schedule but I have a regular fulltime gig which, if I were just sitting here with an open mic and spitballing witty bon mots off of today’s headlines, I could probably pull it off. But on this show I try to bring you snippets and bits from comedy podcasts around the interwebs and around the world and that just plain takes time. So Epi38 is a clipless show BUT I do have a great interview with one of my favorite comedians. Andy Bumatai is from Hawaii and is IN Hawaii and made his name there as well. He gets to the mainland from time to time, which is how I first got to know him. We get into that story in the interview. I recorded my chat with Andy when I was in Honolulu back in September and I was hoping to have it up before now, because it’s got some plugs for a show Andy and some other bruddas from the islands did in the Bay Area and Southern California at the end of October. I was hoping to spread the word but it’s like my whole show is on island time of something. Anyway, you can see Andy regularly now on YouTube with his series In The Car with Andy Bumatai. (Note: Andy's show hit the web a good half year or so before Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee debuted online.) We talk about not just this current project of Andy’s but touch on many of the other shows he’s done over the years that helped to make him as much about Hawaii as pineapple, poi and pupu platters. Speaking of pupus, that’s one of the things mentioned on a t-shirt I’m giving away this episode! Seriously. It’s an artifact of Andy’s – a genuine black tee from a long-defunct live comedy show called Crack Up Thursdayz. The show was at Honolulu's East Side Bar & Grill. I even have a picture here of Andy wearing it. Bear in mind I have ONE, it’s a large and it’s well-worn. But it’s also been well-laundered – Andy left it in my rental car when I drove him to a show when I was in Hawaii in September. Wanna win this timeworn classic? Here's how. Send the number of miles (or kilometers for our metric friends) between San Francisco and Honolulu to me, marc@SuccotashShow.com. I'll draw one name from the correct guesses and mail the winner the Crack Up Thursdayz tee shirt. Be sure to include a mailing address with your emailed entry! I was going to do a show around the 8th Annual Podcast Awards, which the voting on closes November 15th. Perfect self-contained show idea, right? I thought I’d feature clips from the ten shows in the Comedy category but, again, no time. In lieu of playing those clips, here are the shows nominated: Beauty and Da Beast, Citizen Radio, Comedy Bang Bang, File Under Horrible, Metrobuzz, My Brother My Brother and Me, The Green Light Show, The Ramen Noodle, Walking The Room, and WTF with Marc Maron. So get up to http://podcastawards.com and vote before November 15th. (There are a bunch of other shows in other categories as well, but we really don’t care about them here on Succotash, the COMEDY Podcast Podcast.) With the elections upon us, don't forget that our inhouse political comedian and Ambassador to the Middle Will Durst has an ebook out! It’s called Elect to Laugh, a collection of his election year rants and observations, both from his act and from the syndicated column he does. You may even see a few familiar passages that you’d have heard right here on our Burst O’ Durst feature. Get over to Will’s site and grab it there.  Early Warning: I'll be a guest on the Functional Nerds podcast next Tuesday night, November 13th, hosted by friend-of-Succotash John Anealio and Patrick Hester. Catch it at 10 PM EST/7 PM PST at http://FunctionalNerds.com or download it later from iTunes! Next episode not only we'll we have a full rack of clips, but I should be joined by special guest co-host Jabs from The DHead Factor podcast, Skypecasting with me from Australia! That's it for now. Until next we meet, please be sure to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
