In this special FOLC Fest 2025 episode of the Learning Futures podcast, host Sean Leahy sits down with Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College, who delivered the conference's opening keynote, “From Chaos to Clarity: Innovation Strategies for Leading Through Uncertainty.” Dr. Sorrell recounts his early challenges at Paul Quinn when the institution had only 30 days of cash on hand and highlights the pivotal mindset shifts and empathy-driven leadership decisions that helped transform the college into a model for academic excellence and innovation. He stresses the importance of listening, transparency, and authentic connection with those you serve, while noting that resilience is cultivated by recognizing adversity as an opportunity for growth and solidarity. Drawing from personal experiences—such as pursuing a doctoral degree while working full-time and raising a young family—Dr. Sorrell underscores the necessity of understanding the complex realities students face and shaping institutions to meet their needs. His reflections on humility, empathy, and the vital role of embracing community stories offer profound insights for current and future leaders seeking to navigate turbulent times in education.FOLC Fest 2025 [Website]Michael J Sorrell Profile [Paul Quinn College]

The effects of burnout are estimated to cost over $300 billion annually, with the WHO forecasting a burnout pandemic in the next decade. Within pre-hospital organisations, burnout can generate reduced quality, high absenteeism, increased turnover rates and substandard productivity. In the conversation, we examine the definition of burnout, the factors that increase the risk of burnout, models of burnout, the symptoms of burnout, possible mitigation strategies to avoid burnout, some of the emergent themes from the research and much more. In this video, we chat with Dr Richard Blythe from Curtin University about how the institution is evolving their assessment and learning practices in response to AI. Responsible for overseeing learning and teaching strategy along with integrity policies across the humanities, Richard shares his perspectives on AI and explores Curtin's ‘Learning Futures' initiative to inspire digital innovation and readiness for the future of human learning. Canvassing the different reactions to AI by faculty and the largely positive sentiment, Richard explains Curtin's four futures-oriented lenses across the humanities subjects that are serving to help define AI's role in the learning environment. Intrinsic to this, is reimagining assessment to be a more reliable indicator of student performance. Based on the concept of aligning assessment output - and specifically writing - with its history and to its future, Richard explains how assessment can become an authentic marker or milestone in a student's learning journey that is not undermined by AI assistance. Richard also discusses the role of edtech partnership in the institution's digital future, affirming the value of AI detection tools to help educators distinguish human versus machine-generated text in a students' portfolio of work, with the caveat that such technology serves a formative rather than punitive purpose and helps set students on the right path in their learning goals. How might Curtin University's approach to learning and assessment in the age of AI inspire your own progress in safeguarding fair, authentic learning? Watch the video to learn more.

Back in August 2019, the Business Roundtable—an association of chief executive officers of America’s leading companies—said that the Purpose of American business was no longer to maximise shareholder value but to instead promote an economy that ‘serves all Americans.’ “CEOs work to generate profits and return value to shareholders, but the best-run companies do more,” stated one Roundtable member, Tricia Griffith, President and CEO of Progressive Corporation. “They put the customer first and invest in their employees and communities. In the end, it’s the most promising way to build long-term value.” A lot’s happened since then, as we all know, but multiple events over the first few months of Lockdown seems to bear out the idea that Purpose really has become front of mind for many corporations right now. So we decided to find out more—and in this special new Season on the podcast, that’s what we’ll be doing: answering (if we can) the key question, Is Purpose Working? We’re joined on our journey by the super-smart ladies of RedThread Research, who have kicked off an in-depth, on-going probe into Purpose in parallel to our show. And even better, we’re being supported by a great ed tech firm equally interested in finding out an answer, too—NovoEd. Global enterprises rely on its collaborative online learning platform to build high-value capabilities that result in real impact, with its customers working to deliver powerful, engaging learning that activates deep skill development, from leadership to design thinking and digital transformation, as well as driving measurable business outcomes. It’s also well worth knowing that the Season culminates in a live online gated experience where I will be debate all the Learnings from the Season with RedThread, and you will be able to debate with us the implications and ask your questions and get your comments heard. Secure your free place at that today, over at www.novoed.com/purpose... then listen in to this scene setter, where I and Lead ‘Threadhead’ Stacia Sherman Garr set some goals and identify core Purpose topics, such as: why ‘Why we do what we do’ seems to be the best definition of Purpose we’ve foundwhy ‘cause’ isn’t the same as Purpose; why HR needs to get more involved when it comes to Purpose; some hints on some of the amazing writers, thinkers, venture capitalists and stakeholders coming on the Season; why are people coming together to work? the need to look at all the axes Purpose affects—leadership, people and systems; a new concept: the stake-giver; a quick progress report on RedThread’s ongoing Purpose research exercise; what Purpose in a Pandemic looks like; and much more.

What are universities for?

Keri Facer, Professor of Educational and Social Futures at the University of Bristol, gives the 6th Annual Lecture of the Oxford Education Society, the alumni and friends association of the Department of Education. As private sector providers begin to enter the marketplace with tailored, ‘work-ready’ courses; as industrial research labs and think tanks claim the research space; as the internet provides informal learning on any subject from plumbing to patriarchy, the natural ‘terrain’ of the university seems under threat. In this context, the continued existence of the university as a multi-disciplinary civic institution is being questioned. In her lecture Professor Facer will argue that such contemporary challenges to the university should not be met simply with defense and resistance or by a passive acceptance of the march of the market. Instead, we require a clear-eyed examination of what it is that universities uniquely offer to contemporary society. She will argue that the features of the university as a multi-disciplinary institution, in which research and teaching, and scholarship and service combine, create a unique form of ‘lively’ knowledge that cannot be achieved in any other way; a form of knowledge that will be essential to our survival in a rapidly changing world. Understanding this unique function of the institution, however, does not mean that universities should simply be left alone to ‘do their thing’, rather, it requires substantial and in many ways revolutionary changes to the way that we run universities today. Keri Facer is Professor of Educational and Social Futures at the University of Bristol, UK. Her work is concerned with understanding the future role of universities and schools in the context of environmental, economic and technological disruptions. Since 2012 she has been Leadership Fellow for the UK Research Council’s ‘Connected Communities’ Programme, a unique £30m + experiment in bringing together academics and civil society groups to share expertise and knowledge in areas ranging from health and wellbeing to sustainability and cultural heritage. This programme comprises over 300 projects across the UK and is a global flagship for critical and reflexive collaborative research activity. Prior to this, she was Research Director at Futurelab, and led the Beyond Current Horizons project for the Department for Children, Schools and Families. In recent years, her focus has shifted away from technologies toward a particular concern with the ways we imagine the future, and the alternative futures that might be envisaged and used as a resource for creativity and social change. In this area she has been working with UNESCO amongst others, to encourage the exploration of the role of universities as a social resource for anticipatory practices in conditions of uncertainty. Her recent books include ‘Learning Futures’ (2011) and ‘Towards a Critical Politics of Education and Technology’ (2013).
