In part two of our interview Arno Michaelis, we navigate the bizarre intersection of music, ideology, and redemption. If you've ever wondered how extremist movements actually work, this offers some great insight. Arno gives us the inside scoop on how a skinhead band like Centurion shifted 20,000 records whilst still getting royally ripped off by their label boss. We also chat about right wing ideology and symbolism, as Arno discusses how antisemitism serves as what "the connective tissue" that binds seemingly opposing extremist groups together. We delve into the psychological mechanics too. Taking in everything from Norse fantasy to Tolkien, as well as the very large psychological leaps bands like Skrewdriver had to take to justify playing rock n roll music and Jewish cabaret tunes. Arno also talks about how the music of the Beastie Boys was something of a saving grace as he exited the movement, and he tells us about how a MySpace message in the early 00s regarding his former band, Centurion, led him to reckon with the legacy of poison he created. Whilst also giving him the impetus to try to be a force for good in the world. Grab a cuppa and dive in. This week and next we're joined by a very special guest - Arno Michaelis, author, anti-extremism activist, reformed white nationalist and former singer of the neo-Nazi metal band Centurion. You may have seen Arno recently on YouTube where he did a rather brilliant interview with Business Insider. As long time fans of the pod know, Chris' interest in the far-right is something we've touched upon a lot over the last 7 and a half years. So, when the opportunity presented itself to chat with Arno about not just his past, but how music is used a tool for radicalisation, we couldn't pass it up. In true Unsung fashion, our conversation is deep an extensive, taking not just Arno's past and neo-Nazi music, but a broader discussion about the far-right's position in modern mainstream discourse. In part one, we chat about Arno's early interest in punk rock and hip hop, through his transformation from street punk to neo-Nazi skinhead, where he provides a raw, unfiltered account of his journey. Learn about his transformation into an author and advocate for peace, his reflections on the influence of bands like Skrewdriver and Guns N' Roses, and the dangerous allure of conspiracy theories. Along the way, laugh, cringe, and maybe feel a bit enlightened about the intersections of music, hate, and redemption. 00:00 Introduction and Setting the Scene 00:27 Introducing the Special Guest: Arno Michaelis 01:41 Arno's Background and Books 02:35 Parents for Peace: Mission and Work 04:09 Arno's Neo-Nazi Past and Music Career 06:17 The Role of Music in Radicalization 09:37 Arno's Early Life and Punk Influence 15:12 Transition to White Power Skinhead Movement 19:37 Punk Scene Dynamics and Ideological Conflicts 38:07 The Influence of Skrewdriver and Radicalisation 39:56 The Influence of Skrewdriver 41:32 Musical Roots and Personal Reflections 42:46 The Impact of Skrewdriver's Music 43:37 Skrewdriver's Legacy and Controversies 47:16 Personal Connections and Reflections 52:49 The Role of Music in Radicalisation 01:01:46 Antisemitism and Conspiracy Theories 01:13:14 The Enduring Appeal of Conspiracy Theories

We've been a bit of a post-hardcore kick this year, so we thought we'd swing to the commercial end of the spectrum and talk about Alexisonfire. Specifically, Mark has chosen their 2022 comeback album 'Otherness' and we have a bit of a barney about it, as Chris and Mark's opinions on the band couldn't be more different. We spend time exploring how this Canadian quintet revolutionised post-hardcore with their three-vocalist approach, and track their evolution from their raw 2002 debut to their thirteen-year recording gap. Mark argues that their latest album is actually their best, while Chris starts off "begging to be hit by a bus" before gradually warming to their more mature sound. Poor old George Pettit (vocals) ranks the band's debut dead last himself, which Chris heartily agrees with. We chat about the Southern Ontario scene that birthed them, the pornstar who (unsuccessfully) tried to sue them over their name, and how their sound evolved over their career. This episode also features a fairly comprehensive look at the band members' various side projects, from Dallas Green's City and Colour (and his random collab with Pink) to Wade McNeil joining Gallows after Frank Carter's departure. Next week we're doing something a bit special - we'll be interviewing Arno Michaelis, former singer of neo-Nazi band Centurion, about music's role in radicalisation. We've been doing loads of prep for this one, and we'll hopefully bring you something thought-provoking. We're also moving to a new underground studio soon (literally underground), so stay tuned for that! Episode Highlights: [02:10] - Teaser for next week's interview with ex-neo-Nazi band Centurion's singer Arno Michaelis [10:00] - Chris confesses he thought Alexisonfire were Scandinavian in some bizarre Mandela effect [11:50] - The story of how Alexisonfire took their name from pornstar Alexis Fire, who then tried to sue them [14:50] - Mark explains how the geography of Southern Ontario created the perfect breeding ground for bands [29:10] - The three-vocalist dynamic that set Alexisonfire apart: Dallas's angelic voice, George's screams, and Wade's "gargling nails" vocals [36:00] - George Pettit ranks the band's self-titled debut dead last in their discography [41:00] - The pivotal role of their 2006 album "Crisis" going Platinum in Canada [50:27] - "I wanted to put the knife in Screamo" - George's controversial statement about moving their sound forward [1:09:00] - The shift to 70s rock influences and the addition of keyboards on "Otherness" [1:30:00] - Chris admits he "started off begging to be hit by a bus" before gradually warming to their later work [1:33:45] - The announcement of our upcoming move to a new underground studio

“All human beings share an equal capacity to harm or to heal; once we start to convince ourselves otherwise, we're setting the stage for violence.” In this special edition of the Media Minded podcast on antisemitism, which took place in-person at the US Embassy in London, we were joined by two former far-right members, Arno Michaelis and Nigel Bromage. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Arno Michaelis was a leader of a worldwide racist skinhead organisation. But single parenthood and the love he had for his daughter changed his path. Nigel Bromage spent decades as part of far-right groups such as the National Front and Combat 18.  After thankfully managing to escape, he founded Exit UK, an organisation dedicated to helping people out of the kinds of groups he escaped from. Moderating this discussion is Dave Rich, the Head of Policy at Community Security Trust, a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism and related threats.. Media Minded explores the bizarre world of misinformation and conspiracies. Following on from the success of the first season in 2019, each episode platforms a different subject who has previously been a victim of, or a willing participant in, a conspiracy theory… but these lines may be more blurred than you think. Ex-cultists, anti-vaxxers and more describe their slow descent into the untrue, and those who experience the brunt of the lies and hatred explain the effect that the proliferation of these ideas has. All the while, industry-leading academics and experts provide theoretical justifications for the actions taken by all parties. Presented by Matteo Bergamini Edited and recorded by Sabina Mckenzie Brown. This podcast is made possible thanks to the kind support and sponsorship of the US embassy in London.

Yeah. Like, oh, this is a little warm. It's kind of nice. So it's okay. Really hot now, but I'm really sweating the next day, you know, and you're done. And, and quite often violent extremism happens in that way. 5:04 a paraphrase of Sun Tzu. He said, If you know yourself, and you know your enemy, you need not fear the result of 100 battles, because you will prevail in all of them. He said, If you don't one or the other, you're gonna win half your battles. If you don't know, either yourself or your enemy, you will not win a single battle. 15:23 So it wasn't like the Pyramids of Giza were built, like as a volunteer community project. 18:22 She worked on Thursday nights and Seinfeld aired, and I had to tape it for her back on those archaic VCR things that always blinked 12. And we couldn't write Seinfeld on the spine of the tape. Because if my guys came by and saw that it had shot I mean, it was the very least it would it would diminish my position in our group, but that the worst I could have been like killed for it. 29:00 And he basically says it's it's easy to feel kinship with people who look like you pray like you eat like you smell like you like that's easy, but what is truly spiritual is to feel that same kinship with people who don't look like you, and don't pray like you and don't eat like you don't smell like you don't speak like you like that that's when you really attained a sense of spirituality.

And, oh, I'm an oppressor and I'm going to colonizer and all sorts of things that clouded my judgment in this matter, but actually, everything I've learned about race, I've learned from listening to people who don't look like me. 24:39 That's incredibly nuanced and incredibly clear to me as you're describing it, because you're saying that basically, the more we do define people as white and not white. The more we enable the categorization and therefore the radicalization of those who are willing to are susceptible to it among the so called white group 35:29 But I think it's entirely possible to be extremely proud of one's heritage. And I am diverse, you know, all Northwestern European, Celtic, and Viking and such. And, of course, a little bit of French in there because of the name. But but that doesn't mean that mine is better. It just means I'm grateful and appreciative and loving of those from whom I came, and I honor you black or Hispanic or Polynesian, for where you came from, and your deep love and pride in your ancestors, where you came from. Today's story is as transformative and inspiring as any that we have had on this podcast. After an interesting and mostly healthy childhood, Arno Michaelis' teenage angst quickly turned into hatred and racism as he became involved in skinhead and white supremacist groups through his entanglement in the punk scene. This led to more and more violent and dangerous activities and for many years he walked a path of fear and anger, becoming increasingly estranged and distrustful of everything good in his life. Our guest unpacks just how this process happened and the insidious ways that bigotry can creep into our lives when we are exposed to certain things in vulnerable states. We also get to hear about the social climate of this time during the '80s and '90s and how different groups and gangs clashed and connected.Ultimately some pivotal moments allowed Arno to reevaluate his philosophy and prejudice. From becoming a father to a conversation with an elderly black woman at McDonald's certain forces pulled Arno away from the world of combat and aggression that he dived into as a young man.The last part of our chat with Arno is spent looking at his life and work since distancing himself from white nationalism, and he talks about the campaigning he did for Barrack Obama, the books he has written, and the community work he continues to do with the Forgive Project. I focused on kindness and interfaith understanding, not on white supremacists, after my father, William L Corporon MD and oldest son, Reat Underwood, were murdered on April 13, 2014, by a self-proclaimed neo-nazi. When prompted to click a link, engage in a live conversation, or watch any type of documentary pertaining to the hateful ideology that led to the murders of my beloved, I would physically remove myself from the situation. Already shattered, I had no intention of potentially harming myself further by giving time to this hateful rhetoric. My path of choice led me to meet Jon Willis, founder of Kansas City Interfaith Youth Alliance. We formed a partnership in hiring Clare Stern to oversee youth engagement and leadership in the areas of interfaith dialogue. Ms. Stern introduced me to the Parliament of the World Religions. In 2018, I found myself walking the halls of the Metro Toronto Convention Center as one of 8300 humans desiring to fulfill the theme of the seventh world-wide interfaith conference…”The Promise of Inclusion, the Power of Love”.I was stunned to find Pardeep Singh Kaleka, a kindred shattered soul, in conversation with a former white supremacist, Arno Michaelis. Unfortunately, Pardeep and I share the pain of losing our family members to violence ignited and fueled by hate. As the author of, The Gift of our Wounds, Pardeep found opportunities for post traumatic growth and healing after the murders of his own father and friends at the Sikh Temple in Oakcreek, Wisconsin on August 5, 2012.Taking on the role of family and temple communicator only hours after a gunman took the lives of six on location and a seventh, who died in 2020 from his wounds, Pardeep found that sharing the stories and lives of his father and friends was a natural path for him.As a former law enforcement officer and educator, Pardeep wanted to control the narrative providing empowerment to his Sikh community. By directing attention to what they COULD do after the murders rather than focusing on them being victims of hate he asked himself and others to redefine forgiveness. Relying on the three tenets of Sikhism 1. meditation upon and devotion to the Creator, 2. truthful living, and 3. service to humanity, Pardeep was instrumental in founding Serve 2 Unite.Currently, a trauma clinician and the Executive Director of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, Pardeep shares with me in episode 36, “Making His Child a Priority, Saved Their Lives”, his own desire for humans to heart-speak; speaking from one heart to another. He continues to place a high priority on allowing mental health and faith health to walk hand in hand.Isn't this what scriptures from the Bible, Torah, Quran, and the Adi Granth tell us? This is Part 1 of a two-part episode on extremism. The “great replacement” is a theory that white people are being systematically replaced around the world by nonwhites through events like mass migration, intermarriage, and declining white birth rates. While this may be an ideology adopted by white supremacists around the world, this initially wasn't the case for Arno Michaelis, then a violent, drunken teen in the late 80s. In this episode, we hear from a former white nationalist — from his recruitment into the Church of the Creator (now known as Creativity Movement) to becoming an advocate against racism and hatred. We also learn about how people are introduced to white supremacist ideologies, the conspiracy theories they hold on to, and the complexity of distinguishing a terrorist attack from a hate crime. More importantly, we highlight the power of kindness as a way out. Featuring policy and advocacy insights from experts: Dr. Cassie Miller, Senior Research Analyst at the Southern Poverty Law Center; Naureen Chowdhury Fink, Executive Director, at The Soufan Center; and Jason Blazakis, Professor of Practice, Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies and Director of Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. -- Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media. Christopher Buckley of LaFayette, GA is an Afghanistan and Iraqi war veteran. When he returned from Iraq, he joined the Georgia White Knights as an Imperial Nighthawk, because their anti-Muslim and racist values were consistent with his worldview after returning from war. Arno Michaelis, a former white power skinhead, and Dr. Heval Mohamed Kelli, a Kurdish Muslim refugee, were able to teach Chris the error of his ways and helped bring him out of the movement. Today, he volunteers at The Haven in Georgia, a local organization that helps homeless and drug addicts. He also gives motivational speeches, trying to spread awareness and educate the public about the dangers of white supremacist extremism. Chris now works with Dr. Kelli on a program called Help, Heal, Love; where they work to repair flawed thinking in hate groups and spread a message of love and healing. He also created a deradicalization program designed specifically with veterans in mind but is geared to work with all manners of hate and extremist ideology. Melissa Buckley is Christopher Buckley's wife and a key person in helping her husband leave the Ku Klux Klan. She realized that the KKK was damaging to Chris and their children and wanted a healthier path for the well-being of her entire family. She searched online to try and find someone to help her get Chris out of the KKK and found Arno Michaelis, a former white power skinhead, and Parents for Peace advisory board member. Over a several-month period, Melissa worked with Arno to help pull Chris out of the dangerous extremism he had become involved with. Thanks to the support of Melissa and Arno, Chris is now an inspirational model that spreads awareness about the dangers of white supremacist extremism and teaches others how to help their family members who have become involved with extremism. In this follow-up episode, Chris and Melissa share the details of the intense emotional journey that deradicalization brought to their relationship. Melissa explains how she went about planning the intervention that eventually led to Chris getting sober and leaving the KKK. Together they tell the story of how their love for each other gave them the strength to not only deradicalize Chris but completely transform his life for the better, of not just him and his family, but also for others who have loved ones involved with extremism. Before You Go: Rachel examines the strength and resilience that Melissa showed in planning and executing Chris's rescue from hateful ideology. CW: Sexual violence against children Christopher Buckley of LaFayette, GA is an Afghanistan and Iraqi war veteran. Chris shares with Rachel his intense and traumatic personal story, identifying key moments in his upbringing that ultimately led him down a dark and destructive path of addiction, racism, and violence. Together, he and Rachel examine the "cognitive bias" and as Chris explains the "cognitive openings" that can be a catalyst both into and out of extreme belief systems. In the second half of their conversation, Chris talks about his journey towards healing through sobriety and deradicalization. He also tells us about the life-saving redemption initiated by his wife that led to him working with Arno Michaelis and Parents for Peace and the meaning he has found in helping others overcome their extremist ideologies. Before You Go: Rachel examines the vulnerabilities and sequence of events that can lead to indoctrination and radicalization, and how behaviors commonly seen in addiction are mirrored in extremist ideology For More Info on Parents for Peace, visit: https://www.parents4peace.org/ If you are worried about extremism, you can call their helpline at 1-844-49-PEACE For more info on Arno Michaelis visit: https://www.theforgivenessproject.com/stories/arno-michaels/ Thanks to our newest Patrons: Sabine Breiholz, Renee M Williams, Nicholas Herrera, and Felicity Kusinitz!! Episode 9 of Endeavor Against Extremism is particularly special for two reasons. First, we speak with former extremist Arno Michaelis on how becoming a father pulled him out of extremism. The preventing/countering violent extremism sector often enough looks at the role of gender in extremism, but only through the lens of motherhood. When it discusses masculinity, the focus is on how toxic masculinity concepts pull men in, but rarely is the a conversation on how authentic masculinity pulls men out of the ideology and into their power as men. We discuss that with Arno, but somewhere in there something quite incredible happens: a realization that the other is speaking a language that often isn't understood ...the language of compassion, kindness, love and vulnerability. I threw away any other question I had lined up and decided to move this conversation into a figurative open field. About Arno Michaelis: In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Arno Michaelis was a leader of a worldwide racist skinhead organization, a reverend of a self-declared Racial Holy War, and lead singer of the hate-metal band Centurion, which sold 20,000 CDs by the mid-nineties and is still popular with racists today. Single parenthood, love for his daughter, and the forgiveness shown by people he once hated all helped to turn Arno's life around, bringing him to embrace diversity and practice gratitude for all life. After spending over a decade as a successful information technology consultant and entrepreneur, Arno is now a speaker, author of My Life After Hate, co-author of The Gift of Our Wounds, and very fortunate to be able to share his ongoing process of character development as an educator working with Serve 2 Unite. Founded as an ongoing peaceful response to the August 5th 2012 Sikh Temple shooting in Oak Creek, WI, S2U engages students creatively with a global network of peacemakers and mentors in partnership with Against Violent Extremism, The Forgiveness Project, Search For Common Ground, and Parents for Peace. I have a grim statistic to report: over the past four years, the number of hate groups operating across America has risen to a record high of over 1,000 in total (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/20/us/hate-groups-rise.html); this is more than a 30% increase since 2016. Prior to that, the groups' numbers were rapidly declining. When you hear about white supremacists, Neo Nazis, or other hate groups, have you ever asked yourself, “How in the world do they think that way?” What could compel people to join a hate group? And, after joining, is there any hope that someone can leave a life of hate? Today we have a guest who can give us insight into the answers to these questions and more because of his unique experience. Arno Michaelis is a former Neo Nazi who, in the 80's and early 90's, was a leader of a worldwide racist skinhead organization. He was even the lead singer of a hate metal band that sold over 20,000 CD's. In a 180-degree turn around, Arno now works tirelessly to educate the public about hate and hate groups. and tries to help get people out of hate groups of all kinds. Arno and I have worked together to provide education at both Facebook and Digital Ocean, and I have come to know him well. He is regularly interviewed by the national media to provide his valuable insight into the activity of hate groups and he assists organizations including Against Violent Extremism (http://www.againstviolentextremism.org/), The Forgiveness Project (https://www.theforgivenessproject.com/), Search For Common Ground (https://www.sfcg.org/), and Parents for Peace (https://www.parents4peace.org/). He is also the author of My Life After Hate (https://medium.com/@arnomichaelisIV) and the co-author of the Gifts of our Wounds (http://giftofourwounds.com/). On a personal note, Arno has had dinner with my family and has spoken to my book club. I have experienced him as a man of great integrity, transparency, and kindness who has reinvented himself in ways that I find both stunning and inspiring. So, please listen in as Arno Michaelis and I do a deep dive into the psychology of a former Neo Nazi.

This is a very different episode from what we normally cover. On this show, we’ve covered the highs and lows of dozens of entrepreneurs’ journeys. And part of every one of those journeys takes them down the path of self-discovery. A path that challenges them and expands their worldview before transforming them into the successful business owners and operators they are today. But what happens if that path to self-discovery initially drags you down into some of the most hateful and violent places in humanity? One where fear, hatred, and self-loathing rule and lead to violent extremism? To be fair, this is not a typical path. And this is not one that any rational person would ever consider. But this path does exist, and all it takes is to read the news to know that it persists in the shadows of modern society. We believe that it makes sense to shine a light on it and expose it for what it is in the hopes of reforming those who are currently embedded within the rank and file of hate groups. There is hope for those who at first glance might seem beyond redemption. And to find that hope you need look no further than today’s guest: Arno Michaelis. Arno is a former leader of a white-nationalist group who, from the late 80’s to the early 90’s was involved in all sorts of violent acts against minorities, the LGBT community, and any white person he and his organization deemed to be unsupportive of his cause. The hatred and violence ran so deep that he even tried to take his own life, with two different suicide attempts. He saw friends killed, more go to prison, and he hurt innocent people, himself, and his family. All because he bought into a notion where he believed there would be a race war and that he was carrying out these acts because in doing so he was defending his race. At the very core of white nationalism exists the lie that the Aryan race is the superior race. But pull at any corner of this lie and it starts to unravel. For Arno, this lie was undone by the kindness and forgiveness shown to him by people he professed to hate. This, coupled with the birth of his daughter, led him to flee the life of violence and hatred he had inhabited. Once removed, he was faced with a choice: bury his past or make amends for it. It is to our society’s benefit that he chose the latter and is now a renowned author, speaker, and peacemaker actively working against violent extremists. Through his work, he has helped families reclaim loved ones who had joined hate groups, and prevented countless others from believing the narrative they preach. His most recent book is called the gift of our wounds, written alongside Pardeep Kaleka, whose father was killed in the Sikh temple shooting in 2012 by a white supremacist. The book formed the basis of our conversation on this episode, ranging from how music played an important role both in Arno’s entrance and exit from white nationalism, how hate groups recruit and how best to counteract them, and how Arno found happiness and forgiveness in the healing process that he’s currently going through and will continue to go through for the rest of his life.

Last Week's PodcastLast week's guest was Nick Fitz, founder, and CEO of the new charitable giving app, Give Momentum, Born in Washington DC, raised in a reform household, to socially conscious parents, Nick learned values "around justice and giving back" from an early age. Serendipity brought him together with his founding partners Ari Kagan and Ivan Dimitrov, to develop the Momentum app. It was the moment they realized there was no simple way to bridge the gap between people's willingness to donate and their actual ability to contribute. Nick and I discuss the genesis of the app, how it's disrupting the philanthropic giving sector, empowering users to give in a simple, frictionless manner and overcoming the barriers most people face when wanting to give by enabling good intentions to result in giving actions and behaviors. The app lets you arrange automated small-dollar donations that are triggered by ordinary moments or events that relate to how you live your life. Nick discusses how the app could develop, and we cover the broader challenges facing the $400+ billion philanthropic sector (U.S.), the systemic societal challenges, and the need for wholesale tax reform. Nick discusses advocacy, optimism, the evidence-based social good movement, and the value that NGO's add, in ways that the government can't. The importance of supporting independent organizations that can influence changes in government policy. Of course, we discuss serendipity, curiosity, and his perspective on risk and fear. One Sikh. One former Skinhead. Together, an unusual friendship emerged out of a desire to make a difference."One Sikh. One former Skinhead. Together, an unusual friendship emerged out of a desire to make a difference. When white supremacist Wade Michael Page murdered six people and wounded four in a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin in 2012, Pardeep Kaleka was devastated. The temple leader, now dead, was his father. His family, who had immigrated to the U.S. from India when Pardeep was young, had done everything right. Why was this happening to him? Meanwhile, Arno Michaelis, a former skinhead and founder of one of the largest racist skinhead organizations in the world, had spent years of his life committing terrible acts in the name of white power. When he heard about the attack, waves of guilt washing over him, he knew he had to take action and fight against the very crimes he used to commit. After the Oak Creek tragedy, Arno and Pardeep worked together to start an organization called Serve 2 Unite, which works with students to create inclusive, compassionate and nonviolent climates in their schools and communities. Their story is one of triumph of love over hate, and of two men who breached a great divide to find compassion and forgiveness. With New York Times bestseller Robin Gaby Fisher telling Arno and Pardeep's story, The Gift of Our Wounds is a timely reminder of the strength of the human spirit, and the courage and compassion that reside within us all. Released after the sixth anniversary of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Gurdwara shooting, the first episode of Sikh Meets World sits down with Pardeep Singh Kaleka, whose father was shot and killed in the hate-fueled attack, and Arno Michaelis, the former white supremacist who created the racist, skinhead organization which Michael Wade Page, the attacker, belonged to and believed in. Pradeep shares his family’s story in America, his struggles after the shooting, and how he has tried to make an impact since. Arno offers an earnest look into the mindset of a man who went to White Supremacy to find refuge in his youth, how he was able to justify those actions, and what eventually pulled him out of it. Most importantly, we look at how their two divergent paths have come together at this point in time to write their new book, The Gift of Our Wounds. In recent years, ethno-nationalist movements have had an apparent resurgence. What can we do to counter the hateful ideologies that have led to so much harm? Arno Michaelis, an ex-neo-Nazi, and Pardeep Singh Kaleka, whose father was murdered by a white supremacist, say that a combination of lovingkindness (Pali, metta) and relentless optimism (Punjabi, chardi kala) is the only path forward. The pair came together after the 2012 Sikh temple shooting in a Milwaukee suburb that left Kaleka fatherless. The gunman, Wade Michael Page, who killed Pardeep’s dad and five others, was a member of the white power group that Arno had founded years earlier. (Arno had since left the organization and later became a Buddhist.)How Arno and Pardeep met and began working together to spread their anti-hate message is the subject of their new book, The Gift of Our Wounds. Here, they talk to Tricycle web editor Matthew Abrahams about their lives and their mission.

Martin Luther King Jr. taught us to attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil. His movement encouraged us to bring our indignation and confrontation to the ideas, the beliefs, the conditions, and the structures of injustice or violence, but to bring our compassion to the people caught in playing out these beliefs and structures. Arno Michaelis, an ex white power movement organizer, says that his way out of hatred did not come from being screamed at or being told that he was wrong, but through compassion from the people he claimed to hate:  “They treated me with kindness when I least deserved it, but when I most needed it.” Responding with compassion and integrity is difficult when we are faced with violent thoughts and intense emotion. We need training and practice to embody the values of kindness and compassion in these moments. This edition of Talk It Out Radio offers guidance and practice with several examples. Host Timothy Regan is live on air with listener calls and willingness to practice the skills of empathy together. Today’s guest is former white supremacist Arno Michaelis, author of My Life After Hate. A leader within what he called a “racial holy war," Michaelis later realized his hate was misplaced, the product of fear, anger, and an overall misunderstanding of concepts such as forgiveness and personal responsibility. Today he is a Buddhist and anti-violence activist with Serve 2 Unite, an organization that works with student leaders to create compassionate, nonviolent leadership in their communities.   In a frank discussion with Josh Zepps, Michaelis reflects on his mistakes, and how he came to let go of his hate and anger. He notes the similarities he perceives between the language and emotion of the white power movement he left, and that of the campaign rhetoric of Donald Trump, whose rallies are now plagued by racially charged clashes and violence. Michaelis joins us today to offer some insight on this worldview of rage, and how we can work toward alternatives to hate and violence.
