Understanding the Internal Glass Ceiling Women often face both an external glass ceiling—societal and corporate barriers—and an internal one, built from years of social conditioning. Many struggle with self-doubt and a fear of being seen as ‘too aggressive' or ‘too soft.' Elizabeth Bachman explains that breaking through this internal limitation is just as crucial as overcoming external challenges. Learning to present yourself as a confident, authoritative leader is a key step toward being heard. Why Quitting is Expensive Many talented women leave leadership roles because they feel unheard or undervalued. However, quitting can be an expensive choice—not just financially, but in lost opportunities for growth, leadership, and influence. Elizabeth shares why persistence and strategic communication are essential for long-term success. Speak So They Understand Communication isn't just about what you say—it's about how your message is received. Men and women often speak in different ‘languages' in professional settings, which can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Elizabeth discusses how women can adapt their communication style without losing authenticity, ensuring that their messages are not just heard but respected and acted upon. The Power of Strategic Empathy One of Elizabeth's signature techniques, strategic empathy, is about understanding your audience's perspective and using that insight to communicate more effectively. Rather than trying to fit into a traditional leadership mold, women can leverage their natural empathy to build stronger connections and influence outcomes. This approach is particularly useful in male-dominated industries, where women often struggle to get their ideas taken seriously. The Difference Between Single-Focus and Multi-Flow Thinkers Traditionally, business leadership has been shaped by single-focus thinkers—those who follow a linear path. However, many women excel at multi-flow thinking, balancing multiple perspectives and priorities at once. Elizabeth explains how women can use this ability as a strength rather than seeing it as a disadvantage in a structured corporate world. Just Ask: The Importance of Speaking Up Women often hesitate to ask for what they need—whether it's a raise, a leadership opportunity, or even the chance to speak in meetings. Elizabeth emphasizes the power of simply asking and provides actionable strategies for making requests in a way that gets results. Avoiding Communication Breakdowns One of the biggest challenges in leadership is dealing with miscommunication. Women in leadership must navigate difficult conversations and prevent breakdowns before they happen. Elizabeth shares tips for ensuring clarity, reinforcing authority, and handling conflicts with confidence. Making Women's Voices Heard in Places of Power Elizabeth's mission is to help women be heard in spaces traditionally dominated by men. She offers real-world examples of women who have successfully navigated leadership roles and shares strategies that can help others do the same. Key Takeaways: ✅ Discover why your voice might not be heard and how to change that ✅ Avoid falling into the ‘Expert Trap' and ensure your message resonates ✅ Learn how to communicate in a way that gets results and builds authority Connect with Elizabeth Bachman:
Midlife is Not a Crisis—It's an Awakening Too often, women in midlife find themselves at a crossroads, feeling lost, unfulfilled, or unsure of their next steps. Society tells them that their best years are behind them, that their purpose is to serve others, and that reinvention is for the younger generation. But Frances Scadden, a Midlife Empowerment Coach, is here to change that narrative. With a background in Learning & Development and Change Management, Frances now dedicates her career to helping women break free from societal “shoulds,” rediscover their true identity, and cultivate unshakable self-confidence. Her message is clear: Midlife isn't the end—it's an opportunity to redefine what's possible. Frances' Journey: From Feeling Lost to Living Boldly Like many of the women she now coaches, Frances knows what it's like to feel disconnected from yourself. Her own journey to empowerment wasn't a straight path—it was a winding road through personal struggles, single motherhood, toxic relationships, and the exhausting corporate grind. "I remember waking up one day feeling like a stranger in my own life. I had spent years being everything for everyone else—the rock, the caregiver, the fixer. And somewhere along the way, I got lost." Frances grew up in a challenging household, witnessing firsthand the impact of staying in unfulfilling situations. She became a single mother at 21, left an unhealthy marriage, and later found herself trapped in an alcoholic relationship. Despite all this, she pushed forward—earning a university degree, climbing the corporate ladder, and striving to “change the world.” But the reality of corporate life—sexual discrimination, bullying, and burnout—left her questioning if this was truly the life she wanted. Then, in 2020, she made a decision: It was time to put herself first. That decision led her to coaching, where she now helps women do the same—rediscover themselves, reclaim their confidence, and step boldly into the next phase of life. The Biggest Challenges Women Face—And How to Overcome Them Through her coaching, Frances has identified six major obstacles that hold women back from living fully in midlife. Here's what they are and how to break free: 1. The Should Syndrome – Breaking Free from Societal Expectations Women are conditioned to be caregivers, partners, and professionals—all at once. This endless pressure drains their energy, leaving no time for self-discovery. Solution: Challenge the “shoulds” and start asking, What do I truly want? 2. The Inner Critic – Retraining the Voice of Doubt Many women struggle with guilt, feeling selfish for wanting more. Self-doubt keeps them from taking risks and setting boundaries. Solution: Learn to recognize and reframe negative self-talk. Confidence grows with action. 3. The Midlife Myth – Rejecting the Idea That It's “Too Late” Society treats midlife as a decline rather than an opportunity. Women often feel invisible or irrelevant. Solution: Shift the mindset—midlife is a new beginning, not the end. 4. The Lone Warrior Trap – Seeking Support Without Guilt Women believe they must do everything alone. This mindset leads to exhaustion and isolation. Solution: Surround yourself with a supportive community. You don't have to go it alone. 5. The Energy Drain – Prioritizing Yourself Without Guilt Years of giving to others leads to burnout. Without self-care, women struggle to make meaningful changes. Solution: Start small—prioritize joy, rest, and activities that replenish your energy. 6. The Comfort Zone Keeper – Overcoming Fear of Change Change is scary. Fear of failure, rejection, and uncertainty keeps women stuck. Solution: Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Take one small step at a time. Three Key Takeaways from Frances Scadden Rediscovering yourself is a journey best taken with others. Women crave connection and community, so don't do this alone. Find a supportive group that uplifts you. Joy is not a luxury—it's essential. When you prioritize joy, you operate from a healthier emotional state, benefiting not just yourself but everyone around you. Living in alignment with your values doesn't require dramatic changes. Small, intentional shifts can create a life that feels truly fulfilling. Final Thoughts: It's Time to Put Yourself First Frances Scadden's work proves that midlife isn't about settling—it's about awakening. It's about stepping into your power, rediscovering your passions, and finally making yourself a priority. If you're feeling stuck, uninspired, or unsure of your next steps, remember this: Your story isn't over. In fact, it's just beginning. Connect with Frances Scadden

Lara started her professional dancing career at age 10 with the Queensland ballet company's on-tour performance of Les Miserables. But it was later in her work life, that she finally achieved notable success at age 32, when she broke a 50-year-old insurance company's sales record in one week, amongst 600 national sales agents. Then at age 48, as a mature age student, she won an international scholar award for being in the Top 100 of 29,000 university students for academic excellence. Lara is known for her optimistic enthusiasm, strategic creativity, commitment to excellence, and lasting love for her family and friends. This is why these days, she's an Ambassador for Appreciation. At Business Awards Coach, Lara loves seeing people be recognised and appreciated for their great accomplishments. She also believes, as William James once put it that, “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Lara believes in the importance of appreciation in the workplace. She values personal and professional growth and resilience. She believes in the power of recognition and celebration, and in being appreciated. In this episode, Lara shares some potential issues or challenges that award nominees can face when applying for business awards? These include: 1. Tall Poppy Syndrome: What is it, where does it come from, and why does it affect people who want to apply for recognition of excellent outcomes, through business awards nominations? 2. Imposter Syndrome: What is it, why does it stop people from applying for business awards opportunities, and how can they overcome it? 3. Mindset Challenges: What are they, why do they stop us, and how do we address them? 4. Work-Life Balance Struggles: Do work-life balance issues and caregiving responsibilities impact women's abilities to dedicate time and effort to preparing for business awards competitions? Yes. So, what strategies can be considered? 5. Mentorship and Support: If workplaces have an absence of mentorship or support systems that would otherwise help encourage women or others to apply for business awards, what strategies can be implemented to alleviate this, so that people are better supported to enter in more business awards? 6. Visibility and Representation: Does the underrepresentation of women or other marginalised people in leadership positions and decision-making roles affect their visibility and recognition in business awards competitions? If so, in what ways, what are the consequences? And what strategies could be implemented? 7. Implicit Bias & Judging Criteria: Can unconscious biases and stereotypes impact the evaluation and selection process of women and others in business awards competitions? Carmen Sederino Carmen Sederino is a business and marketing professional, with over two decades of experience across a multinational enterprise. Discovering a love of acting at an early age she formally trained at Monash University completing a Bachelor of Performing Arts with Honours. Carmen combined her business experience and acting training to found Illuminated Story. Carmen's primary focus is helping Professionals empower their potential through speaking with impact in their role. She truly coaches the individual to ensure their message is heard and felt. With her approachable, warm manner and strength-based approach, Carmen's clients often build their skills to a point where they can confidently take on opportunities and achieve outstanding results. Carmen believes this is a skill you can learn and develop if you want to. If you're ready to do the work. In this episode, Carme explains why many women are smart and desire to be leaders, but just couldn't ‘sell' their ideas to others and therefore were not considered to be great leaders. It was because they didn't naturally communicate with confidence and inspire others to follow. Many women still tend to take a back seat and not use their voice to demonstrate their expertise. They are exceptionally critical of themselves to the point where that mindset is detrimental to their success. There is a real fear around public speaking/presenting for both men and women. Often talented technical-minded people find themselves promoted to top roles within organisations and tend to delegate the speaking responsibilities as much as possible until they can't anymore. Discover what foods and nutrients will give your body what it needs and help it calm. Episode 161 Samantha Barnett Sammy is the head Nutritionist and Educator of 'Nutrition with Sammy'. She is also a mum of two young boys and a dual business owner. Her personal journey, marked by the onset of anxiety and panic disorder from a young age, fueled her mission to understand her own body and the connection between nutrition, mental health, and overall well-being. Sammy's holistic approach to health goes beyond nutrition, delving into the intricate web of mind and body that shape our well-being. With over 20 years of life and clinical experience and a background in entertainment, she has a unique talent for establishing connections with her audience by openly sharing her personal childhood struggles around anxiety and friendships. She keeps children and adults engaged by demonstrating how their daily health choices can directly impact the aspects of life that truly matter to them. Sammy believes when it comes to our overall health, while nutrition plays a big role in this, it is so much more. It's the biochemical reactions within us, how we absorb, eliminate, move, think and feel. Quite often it has nothing to do with what we eat but the habits and emotions that lie underneath the surface driving us to those foods. The constant need for love and attention as humans in order to feel safe. In this episode, Sammy talks about her desire to help people to have a good relationship with their body, and food. Diagnosed with Orthorexia and acute liver failure due to the level of stress, Sammy put on herself to "fit in" and work against her own body. Seeing clients in her clinic who were riddled with anxiety, depression, and poor gut health. Being bullied by their partners, children, and bosses. Sammy learned our bodies aren't designed to do what we are doing in today's modern world. It's playing havoc on not just our endocrine system but everything inside us. When women are in a constant state of stress and "to do", their bodies aren't digesting foods properly and it doesn't matter how well they eat and exercise at the gym, if the body doesn't feel safe, it won't drop that weight. It isn't about pushing us and starving ourselves, it's about reconnecting and slowing down. We have forgotten how to do that. Learn why it is important women forget that the one thing we need as humans is love, and we don't know how to give that to ourselves as we have been conditioned to give to everyone else around us. Marlene Cameron Marlene has been coaching entrepreneurs and executives for the past 20 years. It has always intrigued her that smart and talented people can doubt their capabilities and fear they don't belong in their roles. She helps her clients realize their innate capacity for greater clarity and natural confidence as experts and leaders. With a clearer understanding of their true nature and knowing they were designed for success, their capacity for greater productivity happiness and well-being expands effortlessly. Marlene believes that everyone possesses innate wisdom, well-being, and happiness even though those qualities can be covered up by insecure thinking and false assumptions about ourselves and others. Despite her academic and business success, Marlene experienced intermittent self-doubt that undermined her confidence which she came to understand was the hallmark of Impostor Syndrome. Or as it was first called, the Imposter Phenomena. In this episode, Marlene explains the Three Principles and how the illusion of your thoughts is creating your experience. Discover why women are often conditioned to: · Worry what others think of them and how they look. · Put the needs of others before their own and feel overly responsible. · Get caught up in the web of pleasing, performing, proving, and perfecting. When you recognise you are fully equipped to succeed, you can trust yourself to know what to do, even if others don't agree or approve. The capacity to influence and create impact comes from an individual's poise, presence, and authenticity. Intelligence, Kindness, attentiveness, common sense, and being of service to others are the most powerful qualities of leadership. Learn why you are not an impostor; your thoughts are the impostors. You are not your thoughts, but you live in the experience of your thinking from moment to moment. Your default state of mind is happiness, well-being, confidence, optimism, and unlimited capacity to navigate life with grace and ease.
