This week on the podcast Morgan DeBaun is joined by Liz Plank, award-winning journalist, author, and co-host of the renowned podcasts Synced and Man Enough. Together, Morgan and Liz explore what it means to live in a patriarchal society - and the harm that can come from the patriarchy to both women and men. From what it means to be a feminist, to the impacts of patriarchal expectations on men's mental health, Liz is bringing her expertise on gender and oppression to the mic. Through the episode, both Morgan and Liz share experiences they have had navigating the workplace with men, and Morgan dives into the ways her pregnancy has shed new light on disparities between the sexes. They examine how parental leave policies (or the lack-there-of) in the United States contribute to sustained patterns of inequality, and discuss the reality that expectations on moms and dads differ so drastically. Liz closes out the episode sharing her most recent project - a documentary on disability rights called 'Not So Special' that aims to abolish ablism. What is the healthy masculine? What is a healthy sexual man? How can men thrive sexually in a way that improves the lives of ALL people? These are the kinds of questions we'll dive into in season 3 of this podcast. Why? Because it's both important AND it will help you become a better lover, partner, friend and overall human. We can't become our best selves just by learning techniques... we also have to look at the systems and contexts we're part of, and how we relate to and interact with those systems. It's rich content, and it can be confronting... but it's work we need to do, and I'm excited to do this work WITH you.In addition to the episodes in season 3, I also recommend checking out the podcast and article below, because they dive into this topic beautifully. You may not agree with everything, but it will certainly inspire some deep & critical thinking, which I believe is necessary for where we are today."Understanding Men & Their Trauma"- with Gabor Mate on the Man Enough Podcast"Men are lost. Here's a map out of the wilderness." - article by Christine Emba------------------------

Welcome to a new series where we celebrate sisterhood. Our biological sisters, and the ones who show up and carry us through life. We celebrate the timeless and invisible bonds that mysteriously tie us together. Liz Plank and Emile Plank are both writers. Liz Plank is a journalist and an award-winning author. You know her from MSBC, the Man Enough Podcast with Justin Baldoni and Race to 35 with Monica Padman. (BTW – Liz and Monica just announced that they are starting a new podcast where they will answer your questions, so be sure to send them one here: https://hello243414.typeform.com/to/GE5qpufa?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email!) Emilie Plank is a teacher and recently published her first children's book: Les Galettes de grand-maman. I wrote about it on Mitsou Magazine and called it The Kid's Book Making the Adults Cry. I, like many adults, got very emotional reading the book. It's a diamond. It's about a wolf cub who immigrates to Canada and faces discrimination. Ultimately, it's a book about empathy. I wanted to talk to Liz and Emilie about their childhood, how they made each other who they are, and how they inspired each other to become authors. Major Tom Schueman, The Man Enough Podcast's first war veteran and active duty military guest, discusses male friendship, positive masculine characteristics that are not binary or the property of men alone, how being trained to be alert all the time on the battlefield can make it hard to be vulnerable and present in the rest of life, how knowing how to handle any kind of physical wound does not prepare you to address emotional or psychological wounds, and his belief that we need to learn how to reintegrate warriors back into society after combat like Native Americans and the Spartans used to do. Ultimately, he believes that healthy manhood is rooted in finding purpose and serving something greater than yourself. New episodes every Monday

The Man Enough Podcast is delighted to have Andy join us for a few episodes of our second season. You can expect to see Andy in a number of upcoming episodes, alternating with Justin as he tours his new book, Boys Will Be Human. About Andy Grammer: Multi-platinum performer Andy Grammer is a gifted songwriter with a bent toward contemporary soul and pop and hits like"Keep Your Head Up" and "Fine by Me." A native of Los Angeles, Grammer is the son of children's music artist Red Grammer, and grew up in New York State. He later returned to California to earn his B.A. in music industry studies from California State University, Northridge. While attending school, Grammer began performing around Los Angeles and even spent time as a street performer to help publicize himself. Much of his career is dedicated to his mother who passed when he was 25. In 2015, Grammer returned with his sophomore album, Magazines or Novels, featuring the singles "Back Home" and "Honey, I'm Good," the latter of which reached number nine on the Billboard chart. (It also helped him become the first male pop artist since John Mayer to reach the Top Ten at adult pop radio on his first two singles.) Show Notes 03:15 - Welcome Andy Grammar 04:00 - The infamous “Laundry” Conversation (Original Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK2d5Qy-zWk) 11:54 - What's a Good Man? 15:40 - The Science of Testosterone 24:11 - Andy's New Show Opener: Spoken Word 28:13 - Performing Masculinity, Getting Status from Other Men 30:26 - “Do Straight Men Even Like Women?” 38:31 - Showing Up Through Actions and Recognizing Inequality in the Chore Gap 47:11 - What Brings You Joy Key Quotes from the Episode: Do I need to be edgier, do I need to curse? What do I need to do to get this thing that I don't want? If you want a star for the culture game, I am not your man…but far too often I start conversations apologizing for who I am. Do straight men even like women? What does it mean to be there in solidarity for someone? It's to listen, and not only to listen, but believe. This week Kat (@kat.defatta) has Justin Baldoni (@justinbaldoni) on the show to talk about some of the harmful messages that our culture's idea of masculinity creates. Justin recently came out with a book titled, Man Enough and has started the Man Enough Podcast in an effort to further undefine masculinity and offer freedom to those who have been hurt by the current popular beliefs of what being a man looks like. In this episode you will hear about some of those beliefs and gain a better understanding of why we need to start shifting how we view masculinity. What has season one taught us about what it means to be a White person in the US today without supremacy or shame? After 9 weeks, 28 hours of recording, and 12 hours of published material Jenny and Loran identify the key findings of season one. In the conclusion of our first attempt at a community assessment of White people and Whiteness, Loran and Jenny sit down to discuss the incredibly thoughtful interviews, moments, and themes which left a lasting impact on them. Questions include: What clips had the biggest impact on you and why? What five themes did you find were being repeated over and over again? What three clips keep creeping into your consciousness when you least expect them? What was the hardest thing to learn/hold and why? If you could have every White person in the US hear one clip, what would it be and why? Did anything surprise you in the making of this? What would you do over if you could? What's your biggest takeaway? What have you changed in your life since the podcast began? ========== Loran references Alok's guest appearance on The Man Enough Podcast which may be viewed https://youtu.be/Tq3C9R8HNUQ (here). It will be updated and cleaned in the coming weeks. Please reach out if you would like a transcript in the interim. ========== Welcome to our podcast. We're so glad you're here refocusing on Whiteness without supremacy or shame. Listen. Like. Follow. Instagram: @the.spillway | Facebook: @WithoutSupremacyorShame For a transcript of this episode and more, please visit our website, https://www.thespillway.org/ (www.thespillway.org ) Mentioned in this episode: The Spillway Community Guidelines 1. Engage sequentially. The show is a serial not episodic. We do this so we can build relation and find common ground and context. 2. We stay in our own lane. The Spillway is about White people talking to (predominately) White people about White people and White culture. We're not out here to critique anyone's actions but our own. 3. Our combined fabric of destiny. (3a) As Dr. King said, our humanities are deeply interconnected to each other. Racism negatively impacts me, too. (3b) The Spillway is one mechanism within a larger framework needed to sustain racial equity and justice. We're not a one-stop shop. 4. No one right way to liberation. We all share the same goals, but not every method works for every person. If this doesn't work for you. That's okay. Maybe it works for someone else.

November is Mens Health month and has been fuelled for many years by the creation and influence of Movember, an annual event where people grow moustaches to raise awareness for mens health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mens suicide. Unfortunately, we feel as if November is often a forgotten month due to Christmas and yet, we feel that it needs to become one of the most important months of the year to ensure we as men are supported fully in our mental and physical health. In her own words, “Jacki Carr is a goal coach, motivational speaker and mama. As a leader in transformation, she works with people to amplify their voices and expand their vision and goals to better the future of the World. She is a Senior Lightyear Leadership Coach and has worked with companies like lululemon, MINDBODY, Patagonia, and The North Face and truly values companies who care for their people and the Earth.” Julia has been drawn to Jacki for years - she is enamored by her witty intellect, love of books, her magnetic energy, and her mindful perspective. Therefore, she was so grateful that Jacki agreed to join the podcast to provide deep insights and deep laughs. We Discuss: Life pivots and what it feels like to no longer recognize nor relate to past versions of yourself Instagram: the performative nature of Instagram; the mental, emotional, and psychological impacts of social media and IG; boundaries - both with what you post and how often you're on the platform; the complex nature of using social media/IG as a tool for creating community, social activism, and learning Motherhood: Jacki shares heartfelt stories from her pregnancies and how it helped her to start loving her body; her postpartum experiences; what it has been like to mother two daughters; and how motherhood has shaped her and her approach to visions and goals Visions and Goals: Jacki provides tangible advice for setting visions and goals during life pivots and times of uncertainty (like motherhood) - she shares the beauty of choice, staying curious in uncertainty, embracing failures, and leaving room for the unknown Questions Jacki Left Us to Ponder: Where is community created if not on social media? Where do we find community off of social media? “How are you cultivating community within what you are consuming? And if you're not, can you?” Powerful Words from Jacki: On Motherhood: “I really found that motherhood slapped me in the face, in the most graceful, loving way. Like a love slap. And was like, ‘hey wake up, it's gonna be different now, you gotta make some different choices, you gotta feel your way around, you fell in love with this body, cool now it's time to listen to that love…” On Parenting: “...parenting is such a reflection, moment to moment, second to second, of how you're showing up, where your nervous system is at, and how you recover… especially when tired or a little sad about the world or climate change or whatever it may be...and hold two emotions at one time, there's so much love and responsibility for your child while also navigating your own inner dialogue and emotions… On Motherhood/Parenting: “Again you have to be in this space of listening… sometimes we get this idea and notion that motherhood is so much about leadership and guiding your child and shaping your child. I think that's only a small part of it - for me, it's so much about listening to who they are and navigating from that place and it's daunting, Julia, because it can change your vision, it can change your goals in a snap.” On Visions and Goals: “I used to cling so tightly to my goals, which can be pretty performative, you want to check a goal off because people might have read it or saw you post about it. And yet the human experience has grace, delete and edit and those buttons are because of uncertainty and mistakes and take twos and children that show you a different way of being. So I always have more than one vision, you can write your goals in pencil, and I befriend uncertainty as most likely the only constant that is available.” On Goals and Community: “Goals don't happen without community.” Resources: Website: https://www.jackicarr.com/ (JackiCarr.com ) Email: Hello@JackiCarr.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackicarr/ (@JackiCarr) Books/Podcasts/People Mentioned: http://www.elizabethplank.com/ (Liz Plank) https://manenough.com/podcast/ (The Man Enough Podcast)...

What prevents parents and children from sharing their struggles and stories with each other and what valuable benefits are unlocked when they do? Justin's dad, Sam Baldoni—producer and entertainment industry marketing pioneer—joins his son for an intimate and emotional conversation where they both open up to each other in ways they never have before. They share their perspectives and challenges as fathers and sons, including: The pressure and detriment of upholding the image of being superman Breaking through the invisible barrier that keeps us from having honest conversations about sex, financial struggles, aging, and intimacy Generational patterns they have perpetuated and the ones they want to break By modeling what it looks like when we show up and open up, Sam and Justin invite us to stay present—even when it gets uncomfortable—and to find the humanity in each other, including in our parents. Do you know who you are outside of who you have been told you should be? Acclaimed gender non-conforming writer, performer, and speaker, ALOK, shares their story, and the stories of those who came before them, with an urgency that invites us to step into our power and the power of interdependence. As the creator of the growing movement to degender fashion, ALOK is helping others move beyond the binary into full expression. In a conversation filled with wisdom, historical insight, and radical mercy, ALOK challenges us to value compassion over comprehension, to try harder for each other in the name of love, and reminds us that learning is a sign of being alive. Song by: Four TopsVocals: Gail NoblesStory by: Gail NoblesPhoto Credit: Wikipedia/No Copyright"Are You Man Enough" is a 1973 hit song recorded by The Four Tops. It appeared on the soundtrack to the movie "Shaft" in Africa. When I hear that song, I think of enemies! You don't always have to walk down a bad street to watch who you're talking to. Enemies are everywhere you go. You can do longer give your opinion or carry on a decent conversation without someone giving you a hard time. When you look around, all of your good luck is gone because of what someone might have said or done.Looking at the Four Tops's point of view, it's very tough. They said in the lyrics, "You can't turn your back on a smiling face. Next thing you know, there ain't no trace of you.." No trace of you. Those words right there let's you know that you're gone.Chorus: Are you man enough?Big and bad enough? Are you gonna let em shoot you down? When the evil flies and your brother cries,Are you gonna be around? There are people out there that can get upset with you over nothing. They are mean enough to include your whole family. If you can, be at peace with all men. I'm thinking of Romans 12:18. I'm Gail Nobles and this is Postgirl's Recordings.
