12-14-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program explaining why Major League Baseball went out of its way to implement a soft salary cap in the form of a luxury tax and the reasons the league insisted it needed to be done. John then calls to task the same sport for allowing for the most clear manipulation of the very thing it seemed insistent on preventing. Catchers' framing is cheating, just cheating that is legal and not frowned upon. So apparently is deferring a player's agreed to salary for no other reason than to manipulate the luxury tax number. Another example of selected crimes that are okay. John makes a case of why Draymond Green continues to find himself in trouble with the NBA. Maybe he really does not want to play anymore. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Jack Dempsey, Marcel Dionne, the Miami Heat, Mike Gartner, Steph Curry, Ernie Davis, George Gipp, Elston Howard, and Roger Maris.

Dennis Maruk scored 66 goals in 65 games with the London Knights. It earned a 21st overall selection in the 1975 NHL Draft by the California Seals. At 5’8”, 155 pounds, he surprised management and earned a spot on the Seals as a 19-year-old. Not only did he make the team, but he scored 30 goals, finished second in team scoring, and finished third in voting for the Calder Trophy, the NHL’s Rookie of the Year Award. The Seals moved to Cleveland and became the Barons in 76-77 season, but that didn’t slow Maruk down, as he scored 78 points in 80 games and led the team in scoring. Maruk continued to be a very solid producer and ended up getting traded to the Washington Capitals at the beginning of the 1978 season. With the Capitals he ended up having his monster seasons. He scored 50 goals in 80 games in 80-81 season and then followed that up with 60 goals and 136 points the following year. Maruk ended that season 4th in the NHL points race. The names in front of him were Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Peter Stastny. The names behind him were Brian Trottier, Denis Savard, and Marcel Dionne. Maruk is one of 20 players in the history of the NHL to score 60 goals. So why haven’t you heard of him? We discuss all that and more as we uncover one games forgotten stars.

Andre Lacroix was the all-time scoring leader in the World Hockey Association with 798 points in just 551 games. Nicknamed the "Magician," Andre averaged nearly an assist per game throughout his WHA career. After a 147-point season with the San Diego Mariners in 1974-75, Andre was named the French-Canadian Athlete of the year, besting Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne and Gil Perreault, among others. Andre also had the distinction of playing for five different WHA franchises without ever being traded during his seven years in the rebel league, a journey that began as a Philadelphia Blazer in 1972. Prior to joining the WHA, Andre was a dominating player in the OHA with the Peterborough Petes and in the AHL with the Quebec Aces. He joined the NHL Philadelphia Flyers in 1967-68 and was twice the leading scorer for the Flyers before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1971. After his career concluded in 1980, Andre embarked on a successful radio broadcasting career with the Hartford Whalers, where he teamed with legendary broadcaster Chuck Kaiton. Andre was a huge part of the Hartford hockey community. Personally I spent a lot of time with Andre, Gordie Howe, Mike Veisor, Doug Roberts, Garry Swain and many more Whalers Alumni as we barnstormed through Connecticut to play games for charity. Now residing in Ohio, Andre remains one of the most popular personalities in Hartford hockey circles and every other stop along his 60-year hockey journey. In this podcast Andre discusses his career and gives insights on various ex-teammates such as Johnny McKenzie, Bobby Hull, Bernie Parent and more. We could have talked with Andre for hours — and perhaps we will do that soon. But for now, here's a great discussion with a true hockey legend. When you evaluate a trade in sports years down the line if you'd still make the same trade again, that usually tells you which team won the exchange. In the case of the Kings sending Bernie Nicholls to the New York Rangers for Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato, of course they'd do that deal again. The offensive duo helped propel the Kings to new heights in the early '90s, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993.These days Granato is an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the podcast below we cover a wide range of topics...On coaching, Granato talks about what it takes to be successful in the current NHL, what he learned from Barry Melrose and if he was ready to be a head coach when the Colorado Avalanche hired him.Regarding his days on the ice, he talks about playing in New York with Marcel Dionne, being traded to LA and the Kings 1993 playoff run - including the Marty McSorley stick incident.Other topics explored feature travel challenges in the Eastern vs. Western Conference, Staples Center vs. the Forum and choosing his jersey number. As if all that isn't enough, Granato also weighs in on the 'Should Rob Blake's number be retired in LA?' debate.Audio player available here. There were also two supplementary articles published this week with Granato. Very few people in the world of hockey ever become as well known as the players on the ice. Then again, there aren't many people like Kerry Fraser either. He's perhaps the most recognizable referee in the history of hockey. In his 30-year career he managed to get under the skin of fans in nearly every NHL city. Yet, he was simply doing his job in most cases. At the end of last season he hung up his whistle after more than 2,000 games all across North America. He penned a book, The Final Call, while taking those last laps in stripes. It's a telling memoir featuring candid insight and often provides the emotion behind stories fans may not have otherwise been privy to.In the podcast below Fraser shares some of those memories. He talks about lecturing a young Mario Lemieux and the friction it created, allowing Mark Messier a little latitude when taking care of a situation on the ice and recalls a crushed Theo Fleury asking him for help.Of course, he also talks about several key events involving the Kings - including the non-call on Wayne Gretzky in the '93 playoffs vs. Toronto, Marty McSorley's illegal stick in the Stanley Cup Finals, coach Tom Webster throwing a stick at him and quite a bit more.He shares the experiences of receiving death threats, contemplates rule changes and offers opinions on calling penalties in the final minutes of play.Like many MayorsManor interviews, we also play word association and you may not believe what he has to say about guys like Gary Bettman, Chris Pronger, Sean Avery, Patrick Roy and several others. The most shocking though may be his comments on Alex Ovechkin.Take a listen here:http://www.mayorsmanor.com/2011/02/mayorsmanor-podcast-featuring-kerry.htmlAfter hearing his vivid accounts of the game, the players and the moments that have helped shape the last 30 years of hockey, you'll probably want to pick up a copy of his book, The Final Call.
