SCRAPS is not a film you can see... yet, but if filmmakers Ryan Nordin and Matthew Francis have anything to say about it, it is a film you will be able to see soon. The film is set in the summer of 2003 in rural Montana, shy art student Gus Shepard and rebellious skateboarder Bridger Owens navigate unexpected young love and harsh small-town judgement while selling handcrafted boards to a gang of Livingston skaters. Today we talk to writers and producers Ryan Nordin and Matthew Francis. The story of SCRAPS is based on Ryan's own Montana coming out story. At a young age, while growing up in Minnesota, Ryan found a passion for the outdoors and film. He got his start working as a visual effects artist, working with brands like Samsung, Oakley, Hyundai, and ESPN, before transitioning to directing. Ryan is currently based in Bozeman, Montana and is a founder of Mission Ranch, a production company . Matthew taught himself how to write scripts, direct, film, host, edit, and market digital video by launching his own cooking youtube channel and founding FrancisFilm, LLC. Matthew has directed and produced over 2,200 recipe videos for multiple major media companies including BuzzFeed, Tasty, Viacom, Jikoni, FOOD & WINE, EatingWell, Allrecipes, Southern Living, and more. He is the creator and host of his food interview show Dinner Views which has 2 seasons. co-host Brody Levesque

In this episode, we are so excited to introduce to you, Father Matthew Francis. Father Matthew Francis is a caring Parish Priest, and a really thoughtful student of scripture, theology, and church history. Often, we get so stuck in our own tradition as Christians. We know a lot and feel comfortable about our own theology and ministry, but honestly, we often feel confused and even hesitant about other Christian traditions like maybe Catholicism, or in this case, orthodoxy, or the Orthodox Church. Father Matthew is the founding Parish Priest of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Prior to planting Holy Apostles in 2015, he served Orthodox parishes in Edmonton, rural Alberta, and Whitehorse, Yukon. Father Matthew is a graduate of Ambrose University and the University of Manchester, where his research focused on the themes of sacred space and place, and the Book of Revelation. In addition to his pastoral work, he also serves as Regional Director for BC & Yukon with the Canadian Bible Society, where he encourages and supports pastors and communities to dig deeper in their engagement with the Scriptures. Matthew lives in Chilliwack with his wife Krista, and teenage son, Basil. In this episode, Father Matthew Francis and Chris discuss the similarities and differences between Protestant Evangelicalism and Orthodox thought and theology. Father Matthew is knowledgeable, but also pastoral, as they have important conversations like this that build bridges and link arms, instead of more confusion and caricature. Listen in on the unique history and beauty of the Orthodox Church.
President Cyril Ramaphosa's lawyers have told the Constitutional Court there is "no evidence" to back up a High Court finding that he suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane because she was investigating him over the Phala Phala break-in. "On the contrary, the process giving rise to advocate Mkhwebane's suspension had commenced on 18 March 2022, months before the events of 7 June 2022 [when Mkhwebane sent Ramaphosa 31 questions about the break-in]," assistant State Attorney Mark Owen stated in court papers. On Friday, Western Cape High Court Judges Lister Nuku, Matthew Francis and James Lekhuleni ruled that Ramaphosa's decision to suspend Mkhwebane – after she sent him questions about the break-in at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo – was invalid and "improper". The judges based that finding on, among other things, the fact that Ramaphosa had suspended Mkhwebane the day after she publicly announced her Phala Phala investigation. Ramaphosa is now seeking to appeal that ruling, with his lawyers arguing that he has "good prospects of success". Both the president and the Democratic Alliance argue that the full bench order that Ramaphosa's suspension of Mkhwebane was invalid, needs to be confirmed by the apex court to become effective. But, in the event that this is not the case, Ramaphosa is bringing a conditional application for leave to appeal the ruling directly to the Constitutional Court. In court papers, Owen stated that, should the conditional leave to appeal application be denied, "the President intends to pursue the appeal in the [Supreme Court of Appeal]". "This matter is urgent, given the Full Court's finding that the suspension is unlawful," Owen said in his argument for why the Constitutional Court should hear the case. "As the High Court correctly stated, this places this matter among those matters which may impact upon the rule of law, and which may have a detrimental impact on the public purse. The issues raised in this matter are weighty and raise issues of great importance to our constitutional jurisprudence," Owen added. If Ramaphosa was required to seek to challenge the decision through the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and ultimately the Constitutional Court, "it would result in considerable and unnecessary further delays", Owen said. The full bench's ruling that the Public Protector was improperly suspended was based on the fact that, in the days leading up to his suspension of Mkhwebane, Ramaphosa would himself be consumed by the ongoing controversy over a February 2020 burglary at his Phala Phala game farm. Owen, however, argued that there "was no evidence that the [Phala Phala] investigative process at the office of the Public Protector would be delayed on account of advocate Mkhwebane's suspension" as the Deputy Public Protector would take over from her. Owen added that there was "uncontested evidence" that Ramaphosa was "co-operating fully in the investigation". The Phala Phala scandal imploded days before Ramaphosa suspended Mkhwebane. On 1 June, Arthur Fraser, former director-general at the State Security Agency and former correctional services commissioner, opened a kidnapping and money laundering case against Ramaphosa, Presidential Protection Unit head Major General Wally Rhoode, and Crime Intelligence members for allegedly concealing the break-in. According to Fraser's affidavit, Ramaphosa had at least US$4-million in cash stashed in a couch at his game farm – and then played a part in a cover-up following an allegedly illegal investigation into the matter. Mkhwebane's earlier findings that Ramaphosa's CR17 campaign for the ANC presidency was implicated in money laundering and state capture were invalidated by the courts. Suspension She had informed the president on 7 June that she was investigating him over Phala Phala. She also asked him to answer 31 questions about the break-in. Two days before she was suspended, Mkhwebane sent Ramaphosa the 31 questions. While the High Court a...

I’m a huge fan of the viral videos on social media that teach you how to cook in just a few minutes. The dishes are eye poppingly bright and I personally love trying to replicate them. I caught Matthew’s post on LinkedIn, talking about his layoff from Buzzfeed. As many know, many media companies went through a layoff round, and unfortunately, Matthew was one of them. I reached out to Matt to tell his story and we had an interview that night. I learned about the complexity of creating Tasty videos and the neat tips and tricks that go with it. But what’s even more impressive is Matthew’s culinary journey. He went to the Culinary Insitute of America and graduated with no debt and during that time, he would post a video on youtube every week for 8 years, about his culinary creations! Matt is doing amazingly well, with media deals all around Los Angeles. He’s using his skills in culinary video content creation to freelance for companies such as Viacom and MTV Cribs, and working as a private chef for Pretty Healthy Foods Inc. What’s also pretty cool is that he started to get into Podcasting and has a show called DinnerViews and it’s pretty good! You can check that out in the shownotes. So if you’re interested in culinary school, or creating professional cooking videos, this episode is for you. About Matthew Francis Matthew Francis is a chef and food video producer living in Los Angeles, CA. At age 23, He is most known for his previous work as a BuzzFeed Tasty Producer where he would make their viral top-down recipe videos for 100 million+ Tasty fans around the globe. For each of his videos, he would research food trends, write recipes, cook, and film the food, edit the footage, and then gather audience analytics feedback once it was published. Since leaving BuzzFeed Tasty, Matthew Francis has taken on clients working as a private chef and hosts his own food podcast show called "DinnerViews." Matthew's culinary journey is filled with fascinating stories including losing 110 pounds after coming out, traveling across the country for cooking competitions, and earning $175,000 in scholarships to graduate from the CIA debt free. His long term goal is to be the CEO of his own restaurant group and create a production company that produces television and films that will showcase incredible stories about food and the people who love it. Huge ambitions aside, Matthew Francis just seems like your chatty best friend you want to enjoy a delicious dinner with. When in the presence of a courageous, resilient and trusting souls, such as Matthew Francis, one knows that there is great wisdom being shared. I was blessed to sit down with Matthew to discuss his incredible journey from significant childhood trauma, struggles with mental health, recovery from cancer, grappling with his faith in God, and with transitioning from female to male. In our conversation, Matthew dives in deep to why the mental health system is broken, sharing his personal experience and offering potentially transformational solutions. He talks about his experience being transgender, offering insight into how people can learn to understand, and relate better to, people in the trans community. He even touches upon the “othering” that happens with race and gender. He talks about why some people react out of fear to transgendered people. And Matthew shares a beautiful story about a supernatural experience he had with angels coming to him after he suffered a vicious beating as a young child. Lastly, Matthew talks about how his faith in God has fueled him, how he reconciled his fear of God to understanding that he, along with all humans, are beloved. Matthew Francis is the author of My Resurrected Spirit and host of the talk show Diversity Dignified. He is also the Founder of “Freedom to Flourish,” which encapsulates the belief that all lives are of infinite value and that sharing your story is the catalyst of empathy and much needed dialogue.
