A name so few know ... Danny Gardella. Gardella played for the New York (baseball) Giants (now the #SFGiants) in 1944 and 1945. Then he battled management about his salary. Instead of accepting what the Giants offered, he challenged the reserve clause and lost. Rather than accept the terms, he opted to play elsewhere, in the Mexican League. It cost Danny his career. Banned from the Majors, Gardella did get one more opportunity to play in the Majors, with the St. Louis #Cardinals in 1950. But he only appeared in one game, and that was it. The Cardinals didn't see a future for Danny on their roster, demoted him to AA, and Danny never saw the light of day in Major League Baseball game again. Of course, those that followed and who challenged the reserve met with much more success, such as Curt Flood and Andy Messersmith. The free agents of today do not have to work within the confines of the reserve clause. But Danny did, and while he won a small sum of money in a lawsuit against #MLB, he lost his entire career. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, we take a look back at the brief career of Danny Gardella and his fight with MLB and the New York Giants about the reserve clause with my guest Robert Elias who authored the book, "Dangerous Danny Gardella."

Ryan McMahon stole home. How does that happen? Paul Skenes starts tonight. Dan Zangrilli joins quickly to talk about the Pirates starting pitching and the lack of depth at the position. Trevor Bauer is still out there and he is dominating the Mexican League right now. If the Pirates are committed to winning, why not make a move to get someone that can pitch? Dan stays on for another segment. Joe names him honorary Pirates General Manager and asks what he would do. Dan would like another two relievers, the catcher, a first baseman, and a corner outfielder. Joe is "all in" on Rowdy Tellez. Dan is not as optimistic. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the name that interests Dan.
Rory McIroy choked on the big stage and that made both Joe and Paul feel good because even the pros mess up too. Paul also saw Earth, Wind, and Fire last night, which he had rave reviews about. The conversation shifts to the Mark Kaboly story about Cam Heyward possibly playing somewhere other than Pittsburgh, including Cleveland. Would fans miss Heyward? Is he still in the top 5 at his position? We take some phone calls from listeners about the Cam Heyward situation. One listener points out that sarcasm may have some sort of truth to it. The show goes off the rails(as per usual), and a discussion about American Idol, Jeff Daniels, and other social media stars. Today is also the 30th Anniversary of the OJ Simpson car chase. A discussion about the biggest sports stories of the 90s comes up. Michael Jordan retiring, Magic Johnson announcing he had HIV, and others come up. The Dream Team was also up there. The Pirates won their series against the Colorado Rockies including two bullpen games. Did they get lucky or did they just play a bad team? Why did they push the Paul Skenes start back and have a second bullpen game, was it ticket sales or an extra day of rest? Joe has an issue with something Ben Cherington said about the trade deadline. We open the phone lines to people to see if they are excited to go to the game and watch Skenes. A caller came in from Iowa for a random game and got lucky to see Skenes. One listener says he is boycotting the Pirates because of Bob Nutting, no matter what. Rapid fire questions from Joe to Paul. Charles Barkley says this is his last year on TV, Caitlin Clark, and others.
We workshop the LMB acronym to account for the Mexican League signing players of questionable character. We aren't just yanking Verdugo's chain, we are teaching you valuable vocabulary in multiple languages. We review your four options when you catch a home run ball during a game, starting with It Belongs To You. A little over a week in and our guys with slow starts are getting the bats in gear. We've got home runs bouncing off gloves and walls, we've got new nicknames (Turn and Burn O'Hearn!), and platelet infusions. Elly impresses off the field too, conducting his first press conference all in English. Wish wish Stephen Strasburg well on his retirement and as Nats fans we thank him for his service. Pottymouth turns our attention to Baseball United, the Dubai-based program that is attracting lots of attention and dollars from former MLB greats, and now Ronald Acuña Jr as well. We remain suspicious. Shane and Spencer, just this Saturday, join the ranks of seriously injured pitchers and the MLBPA and MLB argue over the role of the pitch clock in all of this. Compton's MLB Youth Academy hosts the BFA Women's College Club Baseball Championships. Patti and Pottymouth got up early Saturday morning to make friends with Yankee fans for an important cause. Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman are back on a Monday morning to look at two big NL transactions that happened over the last few days. This morning, the Philadelphia Phillies reportedly locked in pitcher Zack Wheeler on a 3-year, $126 million extension that will keep the Ace in eastern Pennsylvania for another four years. The guys explain why this is a great deal for both sides.Next, they look back at the San Francisco Giants signing 3B Matt Chapman over the weekend to a 3-year, $54 million deal. Jake & Jordan explain why this is less good for Chapman money-wise and a great move for the Giants, looking to make a dent in the loaded NL West. With larger extensions reportedly left on the table in Oakland and Toronto for Chapman, could his agent Scott Boras' strategy of having his clients wait out the market until deep into March be failing? In the second half of the podcast, the guys open up the grab bag and hit a number of miscellaneous baseball nuggets from the past week including new Baltimore Orioles owner David Rubenstein visiting spring training, New York Mets owner Steve Cohen clapping back on X, Robinson Canó's return to the Mexican League & more.[Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for the 2024 MLB season]1:25 - Zack Wheeler extension in Philadelphia12:00 - Matt Chapman signs with Giants27:35 - Orioles new owner David Rubenstein, man of the people31:00 - Mets owner Steve Cohen claps back on X36:35 - Adam LaRoche's son Drake's impressive D3 outing40:25 - Sixto Sanchez and Brendan McKay are back!44:30 - Fanatics CEO responds to backlash47:40 - Robinson Canó in the Mexican LeagueFollow the show on X at @CespedesBBQFollow Jake @Jake_MintzFollow Jordan @J_Shusterman_
Major League Baseball rarely faces a realistic challenge to its hegemony, but, 72 years ago this week, Danny Gardella became the first American-born player to sign with Jorge Pasquel's Mexican League, touching off a short war that challenged the reserve clause, increased salaries at home and abroad, and wound up ending both Gardella's career and the Mexican League's independence. Mike and Bill examine Gardella's life, Pasquel's insurgency, MLB's response, and the court battle that followed.

Heading into the 2023 traditional state wrestling championships at the Macon Coliseum, Cobb County had three wrestlers who were trying to win back-to-back titles. As of this past weekend, Hillgrove's Zion Rutledge, Kennesaw Mountain's Genevieve An and Lassiter's May Prado can now call themselves two-time state champions. After a bye in the first round, Rutledge, wrestling at 215 pounds, pinned Mountain View's Lex Hennebaul in the first period, beat North Cobb's with an 11-4 decision in the semifinals and then pinned South Forsyth's Cole Williams in the third period of the championship match to claim the title. Rutledge dominated the championship match, as he was up 11-3 in points when the fall occurred. An had been upset in the girls sectional tournament and finished third, and that may have provided enough incentive to take it to another level at state. In four matches in the 170-pound division she recorded four pins, which included two in the first period -- her opening match and then again in the final. In the championship match, Mia Bernacki of Effingham County lasted only 1:31 into the match before An overpowered her to defend her championship. Prado followed a similar path. After a bye in the first round, she defended her title by recording three straight pins. Only the championship match made it past the first round. Prado was up 11-2 when she finished off Monroe Area's Te'yarah Lett in the second period, 3:47 into the match. In all Cobb came away with seven state champions, two runners-up and three third-place finishers. For a list of champions and top 3 finishers, please check out MDJ Online dot com. Comedian, actor and producer Joe Gatto is bringing shenanigans and antics to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on Thursday for his "Night of Comedy" tour. The former "Impractical Jokers" star, best known for his decade-long career in making America laugh, is on the road for his 40-city solo tour. From childhood stories as a Staten Island native to the realities of fatherhood, Gatto said attendees will hear it all. In December 2021, Gatto announced on social media that he was leaving "Impractical Jokers" for personal reasons. Those who haven't seen truTV's hit TV show "Impractical Jokers", Gatto and his three childhood best friends Brian "Q" Quinn, James "Murr" Murray and Sal Vulcano challenge each other to perform outlandish dares in public. Since 2011, the hidden camera prank show chronicled the comedy troupe's overt interactions with strangers. Aside from Gatto's comedy tour, he also co-hosts the "Two Cool Moms" podcast with stand-up comedian Steve Byrne. Joe Gatto's "Night of Comedy" show at the Cobb Galleria Performing Arts Centre will start Thursday at 7 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, head over to Cobb Energy Centre dot com. The Atlanta Braves announced Friday the Gwinnett Stripers' coaching staff for the 2023 season, and joining the club will be former Pope standout Stevie Wilkerson. The 31-year-old Wilkerson, a Roswell native, enters his first season with both Gwinnett and the Braves organization as he makes his professional coaching debut. Selected by Baltimore in the eighth round of the 2014 draft out of Clemson University, he played seven seasons in the Orioles organization from 2014-21, including 166 Major League games from 2018-21. Last season Stevie played for the Guadalajara Mariachis of the Mexican League, while also doing a brief stint with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association of Pro Baseball while on loan. With just over a month until the Mableton cityhood elections, south Cobb residents at a town hall Thursday night continued to complain they have more questions than answers about the fledgling city. The county-hosted event was the second town hall on cityhood in the last month, drawing a smaller, less rowdy crowd than a January meeting hosted by state Rep. David Wilkerson, D-Powder Springs. That was perhaps due to the billing of the event, pitched as a general question and answer session on Mableton rather than a rallying cry for the de-annexation movement. Still, de-annexation from the city continued to be a theme, with some residents calling for an outright do-over of the November referendum in which cityhood passed with 53% of the vote. Lisa Cupid, chairwoman of the Cobb Board of Commissioners, and Commissioner Monique Sheffield, who co-hosted the event, suggested they shared in the disgruntlement with the process. Thursday's event came the day after the county announced Governor Brian Kemp will not appoint a transition committee to lead talks with the county before the council is seated. Asked why Kemp made that decision, Cupid shrugged and said that's for him to answer. County Manager Jackie McMorris told the MDJ that without a transition committee, the county at present has no point of contact for the new city. The composition of the Cobb Board of Health heard from Rachel Franklin, CDPH director of epidemiology on Thursday, about the state of various diseases in the county, including a concerning rise in congenital syphilis. Rachel Franklin told the board bad news about congenital syphilis and tuberculosis, but good news when it comes to flu, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and COVID-19. Congenital syphilis occurs when a pregnant person passes on her infection to their baby. Syphilis is curable with antibiotics. But if not detected, it can cause lasting damage. When passed from mothers to infants, it can cause babies to have a low birth weight, or result in stillbirth. Prior to 2021, there were a “couple dozen” cases statewide. In 2021, 93 babies were born with syphilis, Franklin said. About a dozen of those were in Cobb and Douglas counties, resulting in two stillbirths. The infections are especially affecting Hispanic and African-American populations, mostly due to a lack of pre-natal care. The Board of Commissioners recently allocated $3.67 million to a CDPH program, partnering with Wellstar, to provide prenatal care to uninsured women. The syphilis issue is part of a larger trend in increasing transmission of sexually transmitted infections, per Franklin. Areas in Cobb with higher HIV rates also see higher syphilis rates. Franklin added that her staff was alarmed to see, for the first time in more than 15 years, cases of young teen girls with primary and secondary syphilis. The board discussed working with community groups to spread awareness of the issue, and provide recommendations on preventing infection. Franklin said that tuberculosis is “not slowing down either.” CDPH has seen five cases this year. In 2022, there were 18 cases in Cobb. CDPH is working on identifying resources to help people who are infected. At least four red-tailed hawks, two red-bellied woodpeckers, and one difficult-to-spot brown creeper visited Smith-Gilbert Gardens on Saturday, where birding enthusiasts were ready with binoculars to spot them during the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. The international event is organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Birds Canada during which anyone can submit data from their own bird watching. The data is used, according to the event's website, to “help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.” The bird count is held over four days every February. This year, the count began Friday and continued through Yesterday. Smith-Gilbert Gardens, off Pine Mountain Road in Kennesaw, joined the international citizen science event Friday and Saturday by providing guided tours and bird identification tools to visitors. Participants, most of them avid birders, walked around the garden grounds, listening, watching, and recording their findings on their phones. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. One of your hosts, Tim LaDuca, recorded this special, one part episode for a history class about baseball in Mexico. Beginning with the introduction (0:00 - 3:30), Tim looks at how events such as "Fernandomania," and other aspects of baseball in Mexico helped shape Mexican identity after the Mexican Revolution. From 3:31 - 6:45, he gives an overview of Mexican national identity and then talks about what role sports served in Mexico before the Revolution began (6:46 - 11:45). The majority of the podcast is spent looking at baseball in Mexico such as the Mexican League raids on MLB players, the 1957 Little League World Series, and Negro League players suiting up to play in Mexico (11:26 - 31:41). After the conclusion (41:42 - 35:25), Tim records an interview with the Curator of History and Research at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, John Odell (35:26 - 54:09). Dolf Luque won 194 games over the course of his 20-year Major League career. In 1923, he put together one of the greatest seasons ever for the Cincinnati Reds going 27-8. Luque, however, never again won 20-games in a season, but remained extraordinarily consistent. In fact, in 1925 he went 16-18 and finished in the top-15 (13th) in MVP voting and in 1933, at the age of 42, he went 8-2 for the New York Giants and finished 25th in MVP voting. In that year’s World Series, pitching in relief, Luque became the first pitcher from a Latin American country to win a World Series game. But like so many, the career of Luque is long forgotten, despite the fact that he is the 5th winningest pitcher in the rich history of the Cincinnati Reds. Even more surprising is the fact that he isn’t even mentioned is one of the most treasured pictorial histories of the Reds. How is this possible? Baseball historian Peter Gordon, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) who has also written and researched about a variety of topics on the game, returns to Sports’ Forgotten Heroes for a conversation about Luque. One of the first from Cuba to play Major League Baseball, Luque also salvaged several careers including that of Sal “The Barber” Maglie. Luque, working as a coach in the rival Mexican League when Maglie was trying to work his way back to the Majors, taught Maglie how to pitch inside and that turned Maglie’s career around. Luque, who was inducted into Mexico’s Baseball Hall of Fame, is also a member of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame for his career as a player and the fact that he’s the second winningest manager in Cuban baseball history … and he’s also a member of the Reds Hall of Fame. Ben Lindbergh and Jeff Sullivan follow up on an awful umpire call from the Mexican League, discuss the all-time top power-plus-speed players, lament Johnny Cueto’s Tommy John surgery, and acknowledge Mike Trout overtaking Mookie Betts on offense. Then they bring on Fangraphs writer Meg Rowley to discuss baseball grumps, good and bad broadcasting, the role […]
Sal “The Barber” Maglie enjoyed a terrific career going 119-62 over 10 years. But from 1950 through 1954 he was as dominant as anyone in the game. Given the nickname “The Barber” because of how he approached hitters and his game-day stubble, Maglie blossomed at the age of 33 after having spent time in the Mexican League and learning under the tutelage of former Major League pitcher Dolf Luque. Maglie, who was a star for the New York Giants, is the last player to play for the Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees. He also played in three of the most famous games in baseball history: the 1951 playoff in which Bobby Thomson hit the famous “shot heard ‘round the world”; the 1954 World Series game in which Willie Mays made his famous catch; and he was the opposing pitcher to Don Larsen in Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Peter Gordon, a longtime member of SABR, joins the podcast to talk about the terrific career of Sal “The Barber” Maglie. Author Lee Lowenfish comes back to talk about his latest book, "The Imperfect Diamond" discussing the history of Baseball's labor wars. From the introduction of the reserve clause in 1879 to the lockout and new basic agreement of 1990, baseball players have been engaged in one of the longest and most colorful labor struggles in our nation's history. The Imperfect Diamond tells the stories of the players and their opponents, the powerful owners: how John Montgomery Ward led the Players League Rebellion of 1890; the rise and fall of David Fultz and the Baseball Players Fraternity (1912–18); the iron-fisted regime of Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis; the case of Danny Gardella vs. Happy Chandler and the blacklisting of the players who jumped to the Mexican League; the founding of the Baseball Players Association in 1953 and the tempestuous but triumphant reign of Marvin Miller; the struggles of Curt Flood, Andy Messersmith, and Dave McNally, and how they brought about the demise of the reserve clause; the unprecedented midseason strike of 1981 and the collusion cases of the late 1980s. In the epilogue for this Bison Books edition, Lee Lowenfish guides the reader through the turbulent 1990s and first decade of the twenty-first century, covering expansion teams, the monumental 1994 strike, and performance-enhancing drugs. Listed by the Society of American Baseball Research as one of the fifty essential baseball books, The Imperfect Diamondwill stand for years to come as the source for the real story behind America's national pastime.
This week Matt and Dave were happily joined by two of baseball's most prominent figures. Alejandro (can not say his last name due to his preference), the Houston Astros Beat Writer en espanol not only writes for a living but lately he's devoted almost all of his time and work to improve the state of the Mexican Baseball League. In it's worst conditions in years, Alejandro, who has tons of authority and respect in his native city, discusses the Astros, his work and goals that go in to improving the ugly state of the Mexican League whether it be on the field or off, as well as his fantastic television and broadcasting work. Alejandro wasn't our only fantastic guest. Craig Calcaterra formerly of Shyster Ball fame and now the Blogger-in-chief of NBC's Hardball Talk took the time to talk Braves, his career, DUI's, and other awesome baseball topics with Dave and Matt.
