Welcome to episode 109. My guest is Michael Farmer, a management consultant who has been looking at the agency business model for over 30 years. He's identified three burning issues for creative agencies. 1. Work is increasing in volume and yet agencies fees are declining. But because agencies aren't measuring scopes of work, they don't often realize the extent to which this is happening. 2. Agencies aren't helping clients achieve their business outcomes. Clients are paying them less and typically fire them every three years and generally treat them as order takers. 3. AI is now putting fuel on this fire and is threatening to reduce the amount of creative adaptation work that agencies do. It's not all doom and gloom. I found this an enlightening conversation and I particularly enjoyed listening to the history of how it was before agencies priced their services by the hour. Michael talks about the problems, but he also offers solutions. I suggest you read his latest book ‘Madison Avenue Makeover', which maps out the transformation of Huge's business model step by step. http://linkedin.com/in/michaelfarmer If you are in an account management role or you're in charge of an agency account management team and you want to raise the value of this position, then please connect with me on LinkedIn at Jenny Plant or check out my Account Accelerator programme by visiting my website, https://www.accountmanagementskills.com.

One of W. Michael Farmer's favorite quotes is by the American novelist Oakley Hall. “The pursuit of truth, not facts is the business of fiction,” said Hall. Farmer keeps these words in mind while penning his award-winning stories and histories, many of them about the Apaches, including Geronimo and a Mescalero Apache named Yellow Boy. Farmer speaks with Russell and Alan about his historical research about the Apaches, as well as about events like the Fountain murder trial. When included in stories, details gleaned from research transport readers to different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and eras.

It's STORY TIME, y'all! This lengthy 3-part series with Author, W. Michael Farmer is perfect to tune into while you're taking a road trip or working in the yard or just listening when you can. “You are stronger than we. We have fought you so long as we had rifles and powder, but your arms are better than ours. Give us like weapons and turn us loose, we will fight you again; but we are worn-out; we have no more heart; we have no provisions, no means to live; your troops are everywhere; our springs and waterholes are either occupied or overlooked by your young men. You have driven us from our last and best stronghold, and we have no more heart. Do with as may seem good to you, but do not forget we are men and braves.” These were the words of Mescalero Chief, Cadete to General Carlton in 1863. In Season 3, episode 8, my guest, W. Michael Farmer and I talked through the life and times of the great warrior, Geronimo. And over the next 3 episodes, Michael and I will walk through his 3-part book series based on the life of an Apache named Yellow Boy, starting with, “Killer of Witches, The Life and Times of Yellow Boy, Mescalero Apache”. Because Michael has completed extensive research on the Apache, you'll also learn a great deal about the Mescalero Apache way of life. A disclaimer…these books and episodes do contain realistic depictions of historic actions and events that do include violence, so listener discretion is advised. This is a story that's considered truth told along with fiction in a time when the Apache way of life was being threatened by the overtaking of Americans who were migrating west, and the terrors on the dark side in this life, witches and other evil spirits in the flesh, that still had to be destroyed to enter the next life unscathed. “You've got to do a different job on pricing.”That is the core theme of the new book Madison Avenue Makeover, according to its author Michael Farmer.Farmer, a former consultant, is also the author of Madison Avenue Manslaughter, which the Financial Times called a “damning critique of the modern advertising industry”.His latest book, a sequel, addresses attempts by Huge CEO Mat Baxter to transform the IPG agency and restore its dynamism. But as reporter Ahmed Elkady writes in his review, the raison d'etre of Madison Avenue Makeover is to serve as the industry's guide for what another paradigm of agency relationships could look like.Farmer previously spoke to editor Omar Oakes in a 2022 interview in which he discussed whether the industry had made progress since Manslaughter‘s release in 2015. Now, in a new interview with The Media Leader, the strategy consultant returns to explore the themes and key takeaways of his sequel.Elkady sat down with Farmer to speak in detail about its development and key lessons for the industry. A partial transcript of the conversation has previously been published, and now you can listen to the audio in full.---This episode was edited by our production partner Trisonic.Visit The Media Leader for the most authoritative news analysis and comment on what's happening in commercial media. Michael Farmer wrote Madison Avenue Manslaughter. Do you need more setup or context for today’s show?  He’s been in the advertising business for over 30 years and has seen it (not) change, (not) evolve and (not) move with the times. That’s the problem really. The resistance to change and inability to disrupt itself in order to stay relevant and differentiated against the hordes of attackers in the form of the big tech companies, consultancies, in-house agencies, automation, AI, specialists and yes, even the boutiques. To quote Gareth from Four Weddings and a Funeral, “It’s hell out there!” Fortunately, Michael has some answers, but will anyone on Madison Avenue be listening? That is if there’s anyone left TO listen! Tune in to find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Using wearables for preventative patient care with Dr. Michael Farmer

We have our first physician on This Week in Health Tech. Dr. Michael Farmer, Cardiologist and founder of Corverix to talk about wearables. Michael got into wearables because he found current healthcare very reactive and not enough on prevention. It became frustrating and Michael found that patients had access to smartwatches and all the indicators captured on these devices going wasted. Patients used to fax ECG from apple watch to his clinic. Vik agrees that it is absolutely after the fact medicine but we should be getting to more active caring of patients. Value-based care will incentivize prevention and wearables and value-based care align quite well. Michael indicated that there is a huge return on investment for organizations that recommend wearables for employees. For example, 50% of the US population suffers from high blood pressure and if even lowered blood pressure for 10% of the population using wearables would be a huge benefit. Vik brings up the point that there are massive amounts of data collected by wearables so how do you go about deciphering so much data and presenting it to the provider where it is actually useful. Michael indicated in a perfect world, it would very useful to have a link in the EMR that would present him with all the data points from wearables. For example sleep time, exercise time, etc. Because a lot of times the information you get from patients is not accurate so from a provider perspective it just helps to see actual data points collected in the last few months to make informed decisions. Michael, Vik, and Jimmy then dig into more details about wearable data points like heart rate variability and how they help a physician. Next, they talk about the limitations of EHR and how the data presented in a standard EHR is not easy to use and there is usually way too much going on instead of presenting crucial data points in a visual manner. The other huge advantage of wearables is provided personalized care for patients. Vik then mentions the strategy they use for digital apps integration. Instead of traditional pushing data and duplicating data, it will be on-demand. Also, because of the Cures Act, it will open up data using APIs. Having FHIR APIs in the cloud, it will allow apps to access EHR data in real-time.Website: http://www.thisweekinhealthtech.comTwitter: @TWIHT1Tido Inc.: https://www.tidoinc.com/Guest Linkedin: Dr. Michael FarmerCoverix Website: https://corverix.com/pages/wearablesMusic Provided by Soundstripe.comLinkedin: Vik PatelLinkedin: Jimmy KimSupport the show (http://www.thisweekinhealthtech.com/)

Starting his career as an account clerk, in the London Metal Exchange in 1963 at age 18, earning £8 a week, today he is one of the founders of the Red Kite Group, a metals trading and investment firm with $2 billion in assets. In 2014, he became a Baron and took a seat in the House of Lords, and has been active in championing policies that strengthen families, fight homelessness and domestic abuse, and advocate prison reform. He has also used his 50 years’ experience in the City, to inform good practice & new regulations for the financial markets, while also being a staunch advocate of Britain leaving the European Union. His maiden speech in the House highlighted women’s homelessness, domestic violence and the challenges of social exclusion, while his vocal contributions to welfare and prison reform continued the tone of family stability and the impact and importance of stable relationships. Informing his determination to bring about such change and strengthening that resolve was a shift in thinking that can only be characterised as a late in life understanding of the bigger picture and the providence of the natural world. Christianity may have come at the age of 35, but, it has been a moral compass and a comforting hand in the years since passed. Lord Farmer is a man of integrity, warmth, humility and conviction. He believes in the greater good and the power of familial bond, and it was a pleasure to spend this time in his company. There is so much to discuss and extrapolate, not least the ongoing Brexit deliberations, the duty of peerage and the power of his closely held religious beliefs.

At a recent gathering of MediaVillage contributors Advancing Diversity Podcast host, E.B. Moss, tapped the expertise of two highly regarded columnists: Michael Farmer and Peter Hubbell, for a 20-minute, unedited stream of brilliance. The topic is key to how ad agencies may survive or thrive, and impacts the very content we consume and the products we are encouraged to purchase: age bias and the longevity economy. Problems were posed, and opinions and insights lobbed on this subject so allied with Jack Myers’ message: how the media  industry must advance diversity... and particularly why is it essential for the advertising community to not condescendingly say, “okay, Boomer,” but instead, “we need you, Boomers!” Michael, while calm and charismatic, does not mince words on the state of the ad industry, as evidenced by the full title of his book, Madison Avenue Manslaughter: An Inside View of Fee-Cutting Clients, Profit-Hungry Owners and Declining Ad Agencies, and cautions in our conversation that, “agency CEOs ought to recognize the economic figures [the overwhelming percentage of disposable income in United States is held by baby boomers] and that they have not put together a staff that is capable of serving clients in all the dimensions that need to be served.” As Peter, equally elegant (and the author of other well-titled books, such as The Old Rush), agrees and notes, “for all of the progress that has been made on inclusion, we are still excluding people of age.” Hence, the birth of Boomagers, the agency he built to target that very demographic, because, “we knew that the young clients would lack experience in the lives of baby boomers. But also, from an experience and consumer understanding, we knew that they wouldn't be prioritizing them.” So, he and his (now global) agency stepped up. Listen and learn: How has the “juniorization” of ad agency staffs affects the way they think about client problems; What are the growth opportunities and the ways brands should be positioning themselves; What is the main bias around age; Is brand loyalty all it’s cracked up to be; How can multigenerational storytelling enhance marketing efforts? You’ll also learn why Peter won’t wear Levi’s anymore, and if Michael holds out hope for today’s agencies....
