Good news is hard to come by in the conservation world—but this week, we have some to share. A new report from WWF‑Mexico shows that the endangered migratory eastern monarch butterfly is showing promising signs of recovery, with monarchs occupying 7.24 acres of forest in their wintering grounds in Mexico—up from 4.42 acres last year. That's a 64% increase. In this episode of Nature Breaking, we revisit conversations with two monarch experts—Eduardo Rendón‑Salinas of WWF‑Mexico and Court Whelan of Natural Habitat Adventures—to explain why this rebound matters, how monarch populations are measured, and what challenges still lie ahead. From the butterfly's amazing multi‑generational migration that spans thousands of miles to the threats posed by habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change, this episode dives into one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth. If you're looking for a rare bit of optimism—and a reminder of why these butterflies inspire wonder across North America—this episode is for you. In this episode, Darlene Goehl – research engineer and research group lead at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute – explains how new infrastructure being developed in Texas can help prevent thousands of monarch butterfly deaths as they migrate across busy roads in North America.Episode NotesIn this podcast episode, Darlene Goehl joins ‘The Stream by AASHTO' to discuss the joint work of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) with the Texas Department of Transportation in building monarch flight diverters or MFDs – a series of tall, mesh barriers placed along busy roads that motivate the butterflies to fly above the roadway, well above vehicles traveling on the highway below. Researchers have noted sharp declines in monarch populations, specifically during their migration periods in the fall. In some years, researchers found that nearly 3 percent of the monarch's fall migratory population were lost after being struck by vehicles traveling on roads; this number represents about half of the population decline in a given year.Goehl discusses the importance of monarch butterflies to the ecology and cultural symbology of the southern U.S. and northern Mexico, the role of transportation, and how TTI identifies “hot spots” for monarch roadkill. From there, Goehl explains the implementation and feasibility of MFDs in Texas and how the project will fare into the future. This podcast series is part of the AASHTO Environmental Management technical service program operated by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. This week on bigcitysmalltown, we examine how San Antonio residents are rethinking their relationship with nature—starting in their own front yards. Guest host Cory Ames interviews Monika Maeckle, author, naturalist, and founder of the Texas Butterfly Ranch and the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival. Maeckle's new book, Plants with Purpose, explores why traditional lawns may be a liability for San Antonio, and how reimagining our landscaping choices can have a measurable impact on water conservation, biodiversity, and the city's resilience to climate extremes. In this conversation, Cory and Monika discuss:• The hidden costs of maintaining lawns in San Antonio's climate• How native and well-adapted plants can contribute to local ecosystems• Strategies for residents—homeowners, renters, and educators—to build greener, more sustainable neighborhoods• Accessible starting points for those new to native gardening, including resources and recommended nurseries• The cultural and historical narratives tied to landscaping in Texas• Examples of successful lawn-to-native transformations around the city, and how attitudes on “curb appeal” are beginning to shiftThe episode also addresses the broader implications for water policy, environmental education, and the role of public utilities and HOAs in shaping San Antonio's urban landscape. For residents seeking practical steps—and inspiration—on making their homes and communities more sustainable, Maeckle's perspective is rooted in decades of local experience. You can find more information about Plants with Purpose, local events, and suggested resources at bigcitysmalltown.com.RECOMMENDED NEXT LISTEN:▶️ #125. Monarch creatures may be small creatures, but they go on an epic adventure every year across much of the globe. Now, the federal government is stepping in. In December, the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to list monarch butterflies as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. But since then, the new Trump administration has begun discussing rescinding the definition of “harm” in the act. That could remove certain protections for all listed species and their habitats.
