Lekéstük a felkészülést? 00:38:20 - Hogyan fogyasszuk a kurkumát? 00:55:30 - Fáj a menstruáció? Javaslataid, ötleteid, meglátásaid a tyukol@444.hu címre várjuk. Illusztráció: Kiss Bence/444See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mark Leslie, an author drawn to chills and thrills since childhood, has built his writing career by exploring the shadows of fear and death. His stories often begin with the very anxieties that once haunted him, turning them into explorations of empathy and the unknown. Through both fiction and true ghost tales, Leslie invites readers to face the darkness. And perhaps find connection within it. Key Takeaways 1. Mark Leslie explores how his personal fears, particularly fear of the dark and the unknown, have fueled his imagination and writing. Instead of shying away from what scares him, he uses these emotions to inspire stories that allow readers to safely engage with and reflect on their own anxieties. Horror, in this sense, becomes both a form of entertainment and a coping mechanism—a way to confront and reframe the things we fear most. 2. Both Genevieve and Mark discuss the dual nature of death: it's something people fear and avoid talking about, yet are perpetually drawn to in stories and entertainment. Death fascinates us because it is inevitable and mysterious. Exploring it through fiction and museums can demystify and even comfort us, offering a chance to understand and make peace with the unknown. 3. A significant point is the role of fiction and storytelling in fostering empathy. Reading about or experiencing the world through another character’s perspective—even a "villain" or social outcast—helps readers develop compassion and understanding for others. Mark notes that readers of fiction often become more empathetic, because stories let us walk in someone else’s shoes, even if only for a while. 4. The conversation delves into how both funeral professionals and authors face stereotypes—such as ideas about what a mortician should look like or assumptions about the "scary" nature of both their professions. By inviting people into their worlds (whether through literature or museum experiences), they challenge these preconceptions, encourage open-mindedness, and reveal underlying humanity and depth. 5. Themes of unfinished business, legacy, and the afterlife recur throughout the discussion. There’s exploration of whether souls or spirits linger due to unfulfilled purposes, and reflection on how people remain present through memory, stories, and impact—touching on the concept of the "second death." Ultimately, the importance of striving for connection and understanding in life, and contemplating what we leave behind, are highlighted as universal human concerns. Most leaders assume that transparency around pay and finances will sow discord or fuel envy. Mel Price is living proof that the opposite is possible. As co-founder and CEO of Work Program Architects, she's spent the last 15 years running a firm with full salary and financial transparency—by design, not by accident. The result? A company where people understand how money moves, why decisions are made, and how their own work ladders up to business outcomes. In this episode, we talk about what it really takes to implement radical transparency—from open books and compensation committees to staff-run hiring and contract signing. Mel shares what she's learned from building a distributed leadership model where every employee is given the tools and data to think (and act) like an owner.Related Links:Join the People Managing People community forumSubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Mel on LinkedInCheck out Work Program ArchitectsSupport the show
Send us a text! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the show.Hey there, Writer—welcome back to The Resilient Writers Radio Show!In this episode, we're diving into the world of short fiction with the wonderful Pamela Gwyn Kripke. If you've ever been curious about writing short stories, how to build a collection, or what publishing with a small press actually looks like—this conversation is for you.Pamela is an award-winning writer with bylines in The New York Times, Elle, Seventeen, Newsweek and more. Her debut novel At The Seams was published by Open Books in 2023 and her brand-new short story collection And Then You Apply Ice is also out now. (Yes, you can find links to both in the show notes!)She joined me to chat about how she moved from journalism and essays into short fiction—something she only began exploring about four years ago. She found that many of her essays had a narrative quality to them, and that natural storytelling instinct drew her into writing fiction. She leaned into the short form during the pandemic and quickly found a rhythm that worked for her. Pamela shares how she pulled together her stories by focusing on recurring themes—especially around the idea of transgression—and how some of the characters appear across stories at different points in their lives. We also talked about her decision to publish with a small press and what that process actually looked like. (Spoiler: she sent queries to about 25 publishers!) Her approach was smart and strategic—targeting presses that aligned with her voice and genre. Pamela also pitched both her novel and story collection at the same time and found a supportive home with Open Books. She opens up about the differences between traditional publishing and her long-time experience freelancing for magazines, and the pros and cons of working with a smaller press—including the realities of doing your own book publicity. You'll love Pamela's grounded and generous wisdom about the writing life. She talks about her daily writing routine (dog walks included!), how she transitions between essays, journalism, and fiction, and how being a working writer has taught her not to wait for the muse—but to get in the chair and do the work. And of course, I had to ask her what it means to be a resilient writer. Her answer was beautiful—it's about maintaining emotional equilibrium and trusting that you've done your best, no matter the outcome. This episode is packed with insight, inspiration, and encouragement—especially if you're navigating the ups and downs of publishing or wondering where short stories might fit into your own creative path.
South Florida's Punk Roots: Mike 'Milo' Lesser and Gay Cowboys In BondageFor the first time, Mike 'Milo' Lesser, a South Florida punk pioneer, shares his story. As the vocalist of Gay Cowboys In Bondage, one of the region's earliest hardcore punk bands, Mike recounts his early days attending iconic venues like the Hollywood Sportatorium and Finders, where he saw in their infancy, influential bands like Black Flag and Misfits. He dives into the formation of Gay Cowboys In Bondage, who initially went by Social Risk, and their notable appearances, including infiltrating a Battle of the Bands at Piper High School (Broward County) and opening for the Minutemen at Flynn's in Miami Beach. Mike also reminisces about playing with Roach Motel, recording at Sync Studios, and the significance of Open Books and Records. He fondly recalls friends and bandmates, including Libby Bentley, Charlie Pickett, Malcolm Tent, and Pete Moss (R.I.P.). The story also covers the band's discography, including their debut demo "We're Not Gay But The Music Is" (1983), the 7" EP "Owen Marshmallow Strikes Again" (1984), and a 2005 CD compilation of their work from 1983-1984.

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. The annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information. It brings together the entire book community—librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types—to support the freedom to seek and express ideas. This year's theme is Freed Between the Lines. Open Books co-founder Scott Satterwhite discusses the issue.

We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

"A rádióstúdióba tartva azon gondolkodtam, mivel kezdjem a beszélgetést. Új, “Két macska voltam” című regénye mellett a dupla jubileumról: a 75/50-ről is szót ejtünk. Előbbi az életkora, utóbbi a pályán eltöltött évek száma." (S. In Episode 63 of the Write the Damn Book Already podcast, I had the opportunity to chat with Pamela Gwyn Kripke, a journalist and author whose writing has appeared in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Huffington Post, Slate, Salon, and Parenting. Pamela's novel, At the Seams (Open Books, April 2023), details the journey of precocious eight-year-old Kate Nichols, whose understanding of her world is shattered when she learns of an uncle who died inexplicably in the hospital just days after his birth. Interview Highlights: How to turning a real-life event into the premise for a novel (plus when---and why---the fiction component took over) Pamela's unique writing process when it comes to “layering in” detail (that doesn't work for most people!)

At Morton College in Cicero Thursday, you can visit a “human library.” No, we're not kidding. It's a library where you can “check out” a person — like you would a book — to listen to their life story. Each “reader” can ask questions that you might avoid in polite conversation. Reset spoke with Prairie Markussen, organizer of a “human library” event at Morton College, and Alejandro Joleanis, a human “book” participating in the library.

Is there a person in your life you simply can't crack? Just ask them out for a meal! According to experts, our food preferences, the way we eat, and how we behave during mealtime reveal a lot about our character. Our eating habits are highly instinctual and even if we try to fake them, the real ones will reveal themselves in the end. All you need to do is carefully look at the way someone eats to reveal a few of their character traits. Bright Side would like to present 9 of the most common eating styles that speak volumes about our personality and show even more about our behavioral patterns. Learn more about your ad choices. A fordítókkal: Kala Noémi, Penni Éva, Galambica Péter, Macsinga Géza (a Van Helyed növendékei), Dányi Dani (a Magyar Műfordítók Egyesületének tagja) Bódis Kriszta beszélget Amanda Gorman neve akkor vált ismertté az egész világon, amikor verse elhangzott Joe Biden beiktatásánál. Verseskötetét a Van Helyed Alapítvány fiatal roma növendékei fordították le magyar nyelvre: Galambica Rozália, Galambica Péter, Kala Noémi és Macsinga Géza. Szakmai mentoruk Dányi Dániel volt, aki a Magyar Műfordítók Egyesületének tagja. A Van Helyed Alapítvány munkájának lényege a Van Helyed Rendszer kiépítése, amely a hátrányos helyzetű többségében roma gyerekeknek kényszerpálya helyett életpályát biztosít. Mindezt egy rendszerszintű modellben, ahol a patronáltak a magzati kortól a felsőoktatásba vagy a munkaerőpiacra való belépésig egymásra épített szolgáltatásokhoz férnek hozzá, annak érdekében, hogy megszakíthassuk a nyomor és szegregáció újra termelődésének ördögi körét. Grade A Nation is joined by content creator Adelia Acker, who has an OnlyFans account with hundreds of thousands of followers as well as a podcast called That's OFfensive about working on the platform. Adelia has experienced a lot, including: -being kidnapped to go to rehab for smoking weed by her parents -growing up in a controlling and conservative Christian household with a dismissive father -feeling a lack of confidence about herself that led to body image concerns and an eating disorder -having fun times every weekend at the University of Arizona, but still feeling like she wasn't good enough -setting boundaries with her parents, her brother, and friends for her own wellbeing -having disturbing and dark dreams -getting nauseous while around little kids -making a ton of dough on OnlyFans -having mold poisoning for several years -being celibate for a year by choice -- a volcel if you will And that is just a small sample of her experiences and thoughts covered in our talk. Adelia is super honest and engaging. The original chat was about a half hour longer, but Adelia was cursing like a sailor. We'll likely see the unedited chat be available someplace in the future!
