Karyn Parsons — yes, the Hilary Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — joins us to talk about her powerful historical fiction for young readers, her nonprofit Sweet Blackberry, and why books like hers matter more in 2026 than ever.In this episode, we dig into Blue Beach, a YA murder mystery set on a segregated Black beach in 1929 that is equal parts page-turning thriller and gut-punch history lesson. We also talk about Clouds Over California, Karyn's middle grade novel set in the 1970s that reframes the story of the Black Panthers. Whether you're a longtime reader of YA or someone who thinks "that's not for me" — this conversation will change your mind. Adults: these books are absolutely for you.Plus: Karyn shares what she's been reading lately, including a deeply unsettling thriller about smell, murder, and obsession, a darkly funny book that involves... cannibalism (?!), and why Kindred by Octavia Butler is a required read for every human.
This episode was recorded prior to David Wilcock' passing. James Rink interviews wife of murderer and super soldier Captain Mark Richards. We find out that reptilians are working with Nazis. The good news is they're hot and willing to put out. Mark gets drunk with raptors and plays football with mantids. Apparently, he also picked Donald Trump for President. Back in 1818, the same year *Frankenstein* hit the shelves, a Scottish professor named Andrew Ure decided to see if electricity could actually bring a dead body back to life—so he hooked up a freshly executed murderer to a current and watched in fascination as the corpse twitched, "breathed," and even made terrifying expressions that sent witnesses into a panic.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/AndrewUreREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode:https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/58czndx7FEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: In 1800s numerous scientists were trying to find the reason for life in the hopes of staving off death or even bringing the recently dead back to life. But in 1818 one scientist named Andrew Ure attempted to do even more – to bring the brain of dead human back into the living. And ironically, his experiments took place the very same year the novel “Frankenstein” was published. Christa Pike is an American woman convicted of a notorious 1995 murder in Tennessee. At 18, she became the youngest woman on death row in the United States. Pike, along with fellow Job Corps students, lured Colleen Slemmer to an isolated location where Pike carried out a prolonged and especially violent attack. The case gained widespread attention due to the brutality involved, including testimony that Pike kept a portion of the victim's skull. She was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, where she remains on Tennessee's death row.Tadaryl Shipp and Shadolla Peterson were Pike's co-defendants in the case. Both were present during the murder and were convicted for their roles, though they were considered less directly responsible for the killing itself. Shipp received a life sentence, while Peterson was convicted of being an accessory after the fact and received a significantly lighter sentence. Their involvement, along with Pike's central role, made the case one of the most disturbing and widely discussed crimes connected to the Job Corps program.linktr.ee/UnforbiddentruthBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unforbidden-truth--4724561/support.

Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong explores the chilling case of Joanna Dennehy, a brutal serial killer inspired by the film Kill Bill. Over just ten days in the spring of 2013, three men were stabbed to death in quiet English towns, and no one could believe what they were seeing -- because the killer was a woman who hunted for sport. Candice examines how Dennehy used charm, manipulation, and a rare appetite for violence to murder for pleasure across a single brutal week -- and how one survivor's ability to identify her tattoo finally brought her killing spree to an end.Audible subscribers can listen to all episodes of Killer Psyche ad-free right now. OnJune 7, 2021, Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife Maggie and his son Paul at the family's Moselle hunting lodge in Colleton County, South Carolina. In 2023, a jury convicted him of that crime. The state introduced evidence of Murdaugh's many financial crimes at the trial. After overturning Murdaugh's conviction based on jury tampering concerns, the South Carolina Supreme Court also weighed in on the trial court's decision to allow the jury to hear evidence of Murdaugh's financial crimes.Check out our upcoming book events and get links to buy tickets here: https://murdersheetpodcast.com/eventsPre-order our book on Delphi here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/shadow-of-the-bridge-the-delphi-murders-and-the-dark-side-of-the-american-heartland-aine-cain/21866881?ean=9781639369232Or here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Shadow-of-the-Bridge/Aine-Cain/9781639369232Or here: https://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Bridge-Murders-American-Heartland/dp/1639369236Join our Patreon here! https://www.patreon.com/c/murdersheetSupport The Murder Sheet by buying a t-shirt here: https://www.murdersheetshop.com/Check out more inclusive sizing and t-shirt and merchandising options here: https://themurdersheet.dashery.com/Send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.This message is sponsored by Greenlight. It's always scary when somebody tries to scam your family. The prosecution's sentencing memorandum in the Kouri Richins case included pre-sentencing communications in which the defendant stated she intended to "expose this county, the prosecution, the judge, the Richins, the investigation." The language — "they picked the wrong one" and "they haven't seen anything yet" — preceded a life-without-parole sentence and raises substantive questions about post-conviction conduct from within the Utah correctional system.Eric Faddis examines the legal instruments available to those identified in the defendant's communications: protective orders, no-contact orders, Department of Corrections communication restrictions, and the procedural differences between guardian-directed contact cessation and court-ordered prohibitions. He addresses the legal complexities of third-party proxy contact — a scenario where individuals acting on behalf of a convicted person may not technically be subject to the same restrictions. The defendant faces twenty-six additional pending felony charges in a separate financial crimes prosecution, including mortgage fraud, money laundering, forgery, and communications fraud. Faddis evaluates whether that pending caseload provides any additional legal leverage for those seeking protection. The three minor children are currently in the custody of the victim's sister, with all contact terminated since April 2024.Footer Links:Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? [Part One of Two] As Houston, Texas accused murderer Lee Gilley awaits word on his fate after fleeing to Milan, Italy, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are on the case. Will Italy grant him asylum, or treat him as a criminal to be extradited back to the United States? New details have emerged about Lee's plan to escape his Houston trial for allegedly killing his wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, and their unborn child in October 2024. Lee's brother, Matt Gilley, testified that he didn't help Lee flee on May 1, but said Lee looked different at their mother's deathbed in April — heavier, bearded, with long hair. Matt's Zoom testimony came in an emergency custody hearing for Lee and Christa's two young children. Christa's family fears Lee's relatives will take the kids to Europe, yet a Harris County judge ordered the children returned to Texas. Meanwhile, two of Lee's attorneys move to withdraw and we dig into the 1983 US–Italy Extradition Treaty while Lee's Italian attorney Monica Grosso says that Lee is exhausted from all his recent travels. We're exhausted too, but Let's Dive in…
When 63-year-old charity cyclist Tony Parsons vanished during a bike ride through the Scottish Highlands, his family feared the worst. For years, police searched the remote mountains and forests around Bridge of Orchy but found absolutely nothing. No bike. No body. No answers. Then, in a twist stranger than fiction, the case suddenly exploded open because of a confession. A man named Sandy McKellar allegedly admitted to his fiancée that he and his twin brother had hit Tony with their truck back in 2017… and instead of calling for help, they hid his body deep in the wilderness. In this video, we break down the full horrifying story behind Tony Parsons' disappearance, the massive police search, the shocking role Sandy's fiancée Caroline played in solving the case, and the heartbreaking truth investigators uncovered years later. We are going to be diving deep into this case in our Members video so keep your eyes peeled for that one as well! #TrueCrimeRecaps #TonyParsons #ShouldIMarryAMurderer #CarolineMuirhead #SandyMcKellar Learn more about your ad choices. Movie of the Year: 2006A New Season Begins The Movies of 2006 Podcast Begins: 128 Films Enter the BracketThe movies of 2006 podcast is officially underway, and the Taste Buds are ready to take on one of the richest film years of the 21st century. Ryan, Mike, and Greg kick off the 2006 season on PopFilter by introducing the year, explaining the bracket structure, and beginning the first round of eliminations. Furthermore, Part 1 of the intro sets the tone for a season packed with genuine heavyweights, unlikely contenders, and some of the most debated films of the decade.2006 delivered a field that refuses to cooperate with easy rankings. The Departed sits alongside Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, and Little Miss Sunshine in the same calendar year. Additionally, Casino Royale, The Prestige, Babel, Borat, and Idiocracy all arrived in 2006, representing wildly different visions of what cinema can accomplish. The Taste Buds have their work cut out for them.About the 2006 Film Year2006 stands as one of the most celebrated film years of the decade. Martin Scorsese's The Departed swept the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and earning Scorsese his first Oscar for Best Director. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro delivered Pan's Labyrinth, a Spanish-language dark fantasy that works equally as a fairy tale and a historical horror. Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men earned near-universal acclaim for its singular, one-take-heavy vision of a dying civilization. The box office reflected 2006's breadth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest topped the global charts. Casino Royale relaunched the Bond franchise with Daniel Craig in his debut as 007. Cars kept Pixar's winning streak intact. Moreover, the comedies were just as crowded: Borat, Talladega Nights, Idiocracy, and Clerks II each built devoted audiences. Consequently, building a bracket from this year means making choices that will draw genuine disagreement from all directions.International cinema contributed heavily to 2006's depth. Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel earned seven Academy Award nominations after competing at Cannes. Pedro Almodóvar's Volver brought Penélope Cruz one of her most celebrated screen performances. The year also produced major releases from Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain), Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette), Christopher Nolan (The Prestige), and Mel Gibson (Apocalypto). In practice, few years in recent memory offer this density of debate-worthy titles across this many genres. The movies of 2006 represent a year when every corner of the industry produced something worth arguing about. How the Movie of the Year Bracket WorksMovie of the Year uses a bracket format borrowed from sports tournaments. The Taste Buds seed 128 films from a given year and match them head-to-head across multiple rounds until one earns the title of best of the year. The movies of 2006 provide an especially deep pool to draw from. Each round cuts the field in half: 128 to 64, 64 to 32, 32 to the Sweet 16, and on through the Elite Eight, Final Four, and championship. Notably, the bracket covers the full range of the year — prestige titles, genre pictures, comedies, blockbusters, and deep cuts all compete on equal footing. The seeding and matchups drive the conversation. A high-seeded favorite facing a scrappy underdog often produces the most spirited debates, because the Taste Buds evaluate every film on its own terms. No film earns an automatic pass based on reputation alone. A beloved blockbuster can fall in round one. A smaller film can advance much further than anyone expects. Therefore, the bracket functions as a pressure test for every assumption the hosts carry into the season. The format also distinguishes Movie of the Year from a standard best-of list. The hosts cannot simply rank their favorites and close the debate. Instead, they defend each pick against a direct opponent, round after round. Above all, the bracket produces arguments that a list never could, because every vote carries immediate consequences. To see what this process looks like across a full season, the Movie of the Year archive includes complete coverage of every year the Taste Buds have tackled, including the recently completed 1971 season. The 2006 First Round: Inside the Movies of 2006 Podcast BracketThe first round of the 2006 season pits 64 matchups against one another and cuts the field in half. Part 1 of the intro covers the opening set of battles, with Part 2 completing the round. Even the quickest first-round decisions carry weight, because an early upset can remove a major contender long before the serious rounds begin.2006 gives the hosts no shortage of compelling first-round scenarios. High-profile releases like Superman Returns, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Blood Diamond arrive as recognizable titles but face real scrutiny on merit. Films like Half Nelson, Brick, and Thank You for Smoking represent the indie side of the year with strong critical backing. Moreover, the international titles — Pan's Labyrinth, Volver, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer — introduce a different set of criteria into the matchups entirely. The documentary field adds another dimension. An Inconvenient Truth became one of 2006's most discussed releases and earned Al Gore an Academy Award. Jesus Camp generated controversy and critical notice in equal measure. Additionally, the horror entries, the prestige dramas like United 93 and The Good Shepherd, and the awards-season crowding all create pressure across the bracket from the opening round. Roger Ebert's four-star review of The Departed captures the critical consensus around 2006's most decorated film. Nevertheless, the first round is only the beginning. Why 2006 Still Matters2006 represents a pivotal moment in 21st-century cinema. The year demonstrated that prestige filmmaking and mass entertainment could share a single calendar without one displacing the other. The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth both belong to 2006. Borat and Children of Men arrived the same year. That range matters because the best film years do not produce one kind of great film — they produce many kinds simultaneously. Moreover, 2006 produced titles that have only grown in cultural stature since their release. Idiocracy arrived with little fanfare and now functions as a widely cited cultural reference point. Children of Men drew modest theatrical audiences and currently ranks among the most admired films of the decade in retrospective criticism. The Prestige built a devoted following that continues to generate debate about its structure and its final image. Additionally, Casino Royale remains the gold standard for modern Bond films nearly two decades later. The movies of 2006 podcast gives these films a structured arena to compete. That structure reveals something a ranked list cannot: which films hold up under sustained comparison, which reputations survive direct opposition, and which consensus picks turn out to be more fragile than they appear. 2006 deserves this treatment. The Taste Buds are the right crew to find out which film earns the crown.Related Episodes from Movie of the YearMovie of the Year — Full Episode ArchiveThe Last Picture Show — Movie of the Year: 1971A Clockwork Orange — Movie of the Year: 1971More 2006 episode pages will be linked here as the season progresses.FAQ: Movies of 2006 Podcast and Film YearWhat is the movies of 2006 podcast intro episode about? In 2020, pathologist Caroline Muirhead swiped right on a gamekeeper from the Scottish Highlands. Her whirlwind romance with Sandy McKellar led to a quick proposal. But before the wedding, her fiancé confided that years earlier, he and his twin brother killed a man and hid his body. Muirhead was torn between her love for McKellar and her duty to turn him in. Her work with police to gather evidence only drew her further into their drug-and-booze fueled relationship. Muirhead found herself spiraling, as she raced to learn more about the crime before McKellar could catch on to her. In the Netflix series “Should I Marry a Murderer?” Muirhead tells her story of romance, homicide, and self-destruction. The show serves as both a tense procedural inside her efforts to uncover the details about the crimes of her fiancé, as well as a confessional for the lovestruck doctor about her mistakes along the way. After being unable to arrest any of the suspects, the case goes cold. Until new technology, and ancestry databases make it possible to link the killer's DNA to the scene. It turns out to be someone that detectives barely gave a second thought, who has been hiding in plain sight, working an unlikely career. Has he also continued his killing ways? And what does it mean that Lee hired Dick DeGuerin — the lawyer behind the defenses of Robert Durst and David Koresh? Kate discusses Should I Marry a Murderer? on Netflix, the new three-part true crime docuseries about Dr. Caroline Muirhead, a Glasgow forensic pathologist whose whirlwind Tinder engagement to Scottish farmer Sandy McKellar took a horrifying turn when he confessed to a 2017 hit-and-run that killed cyclist Tony Parsons, whose body he and his twin brother had buried on the family estate. She also discusses the new four-part Netflix documentary Hulk Hogan: Real American, and the making of what became Terry Bollea's final extended interview. Hogan was the most famous professional wrestler of all time. The director Bryan Storkel sat with him for twenty-five hours of footage over five days in early 2025, just months before Hogan's death from cardiac arrest at age seventy-one.
