Last week, when the world experienced the largest ransomware outbreak in history, it also reminded me of our cybersecurity workforce shortage. When events like WannaCry happen, we can never have too many security heroes! There was an idea floating around that suggested individuals with a music background might have a promising future in security. The thinking is: if you can pick up music, you can also pick up technology. The Inside Out Security panelists – Cindy Ng, Mike Thompson, Forrest Template and Mike Buckbee – are in agreement. Their sentiments expanded to all artists and added that creative thinking along with attention to detail can go a long way. It's not just Barack Obama who is drawn to Will Sheff's music, Lou Reed was a massive fan as well. Like his mentor Lou Reed, Sheff is a bit of a polymath, but best known for being the lead singer for the indie darling rock band Okkervil River straight out of Austin, Texas. Sheff is also an artist and prolific and pithy writer. You can check out his drawings on his website and read his essays on art and fiction in McSweeney’s, The Talkhouse, Magnet, Billboard, and the Austin Chronicle, where he worked as a film critic for a spell. In 2010, Sheff’s liner notes for the Roky Erickson album True Love Cast Out All Evil, which he also produced, were nominated for a Grammy. I didn't even know liner notes could win a Grammy! More recently, Sheff directed, composed the music and wrote the script for the indie film Down Down the Deep River, which reflects on his childhood of growing up in the 1980’s. Okkervill River is celebrating the ten year anniversary of their popular albim Black Sheep Boy with a new release and...

Selling out Carnage Hall just a few nights ago, Lake Street Dive heads to Colbert Nation for an encore and was featured on The Ellen Show Today! FAN: I was in the audience tonight at the Colbert Report and during the Q & A asked: "What's on your Ipad/What are you listening to these days?" His reply? "Lake Street Dive" - Just wanted to let you know! Celebs like Katie Curic, Kevin Bacon and Francis Mcdormand recently tweeted out her love for this jazz band.  Lake Street Dive makes the most of pop music virtues: solid, evocative song craft; propulsive grooves; and Price’s disarming, forthright vocals. However, it’s a personal strain of pop that is refracted through the band members’ rich backgrounds: a sinewy Motown bass line is reborn with woody heft on Kearney’s upright, Calabrese’s drumming mixes timekeeping with more adventurous jazz-inflected outbursts, McDuck’s nimble trumpet is an unexpectedly warm counterpoint to Price’s singing. It all makes for a sound with familiar roots, but with a slant that is entirely their own.
