John 00 Fleming presents JOOF Radio 056 (Tracklist below) As you know I've been working on the more driving, full power ‘Turbo' side of me over the past few months and been testing this out at Dreamstate Poland, EDC Mexico, EDC/Dreamstate Las Vegas and recently Luminosity Festival in The Netherlands where the reaction to my set has gone viral. Good news, my Luminosity set was recorded and here's an hour snapshot (full set will be on my Soundcloud page). A much needed break is needed after this, so I turned to one of my favourite DJ's in the World Emok from Iboga Records to make us an exclusive mix showcasing his more Iboga Tech side, and he's delivered an awesome guest mix! After a run of playing full power Turbo sets at festivals along with a challenging few weeks losing someone very dear to me, I felt the need to head to the deep side of me to create a thought provoking heads down hypnotic journey. Discover how Rachael fearlessly defies boundaries in a male-dominated industry, taking on epic challenges and inspiring others along the way. Rachael in her own words:  “I'm a mountaineer, rock climber, hill walker, mountain biker and occasional paddler. I divide my time between the sprawling Scottish Highlands and the compact but wild mountains of Snowdonia where I work as a mountaineering instructor and mountain bike guide. I have ridden my bike across Nepal, round and round the Strathpuffer 24 hr endurance course and down the twisty, rooty trails of the forests of the Highlands. I have climbed up 100 Munroes (and counting), El Capitan in Yosemite, to 6000m in the Himalaya and up the north face of Ben Nevis. My favourite day out ever was climbing The Original Route on The Old Man of Hoy, on Orkney.  I've also spent time just travelling for travelling sake, especially in Asia. I visited Burma (Myanmar) at the same time as President Obama and witnessed the carnival of the first US state visit ever. I have walked across the living root bridges of Cherrapungee in north-eastern India and ridden the Darjeeling steam train. I have had dinner with the Nepali Army in Bhojpur and breakfast with the monks of north-eastern Thailand. I love coming home to the UK and realising just how amazing our diverse country is. From laverbread in South Wales to fresh mussels cooked in a jetboil on a Hebridean island, I love our country and all it has to offer.”   Get ready for an exciting month of July on the Tough Girl Podcast, as we shine a spotlight on women working in the outdoors. I remembered that one spring when we were up in Santa Fe visiting family and out on a hike it seemed there was a spotted towhee noisily foraging in every shrub. Noisily! Sometimes you will hear them rustling around before you see them and like all towhees they are busy rascals! The genus name Pipilo for towhees was created by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1816 when he described the eastern species. I've found his name associated with a bunch of bird species. He was an early birder…ha, ha. The 2 legged back hop scratch is little more difficult than some of my other dance moves like the twist or the jitterbug, but I'm getting it. I think I will shorten the name to “the towhee.” I'm already visioning folks circling me and shouting “Do the towheee, Petey. Do the towhee!” Oh, and the photo is by Laura Hughes. Thank you to her!

The Nonlinear Library: LessWrong Top Posts

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Attempted Telekinesis, published by on the LessWrong. Related to: Compartmentalization in epistemic and instrumental rationality; That other kind of status. Summary: I'd like to share some techniques that made a large difference for me, and for several other folks I shared them with. They are techniques for reducing stress, social shame, and certain other kinds of “wasted effort”. These techniques are less developed and rigorous than the techniques that CFAR teaches in our workshops -- for example, they currently only work for perhaps 1/3rd of the dozen or so people I've shared them with -- but they've made a large enough impact for that 1/3rd that I wanted to share them with the larger group. I'll share them through a sequence of stories and metaphors, because, for now, that is what I have. For me, these techniques came out of a stressful time period. In October 2012, CFAR was very new, and I was very new to being its executive director. I was faced with a task that I basically didn't know how to do -- filling the first workshop for which we charged "real" money (the $3900/person that actually let CFAR run), and helping our team create our first decently polished workshop at the same time (which needed curriculum, operations, etc.). But whenever I sat down to try to work, my head would fill up with all the other tasks I “needed” to get done, instead of the particular task I was trying to work on. Or my head would fill with stress and mental static. So, almost because of how badly I needed to work, I found myself unable to accomplish much of anything. The set of stories and metaphors below is somehow what eventually gave me the ability to work with full focus in those conditions (I found them partway through that October), and cured most of my decades-long social shame at the same time.[1] (Though, again, this stuff isn't rigorous yet. It worked for a few folk, but failed a few others; your mileage may vary. Do share your thoughts.) Attempted telekinesis One morning, that month, I was lying in bed, half-asleep. And I wanted my laptop. But my laptop was a few feet away, so reaching it sounded hard (because I was half-asleep). After lying there a while wishing, I finally noticed what my brain was up to. And I noticed that what my brain was doing was visualizing my laptop whooshing toward me. Again and again. (Fix attention on laptop. visualize the woosh. Nope, laptop isn't here yet: repeat!)[2] I'm going to call this process “Attempted telekinesis”. It seems to me that something like “attempted telekinesis” underlies a large set of stress / shame / worry / etc., and that learning to vanish it has been super-useful for me and several others. I'll start with several examples of what I'll be calling “attempted telekinesis”, and then go into some techniques for vanishing it. The case of the munching noises Later that day, I was sitting at the office trying to work, and someone next to me was eating. Noisily. Now, I'm part of the sizable minority of the population that is driven absolutely bonkers by munching noises. Munching noises fill me with rage and make me want to punch someone. But, like, I get that that's petty of me. So my internal thinking stream goes something like this: Coworker: [Munch. Munch.] My system 1/ intuitive brain (silently, in my head): Argh! Stop it! Me: [Type, type.] (While thinking: “I don't want to be petty; best not say anything, nor show annoyance on my face in any way.”) [1 minute later] Coworker: [Munch. Munch.] My system 1/ intuitive brain (silently, in my head): Didn't you hear me?? Stop it!! Me: [Type, type.] (. I don't want to be petty; best not say anything, or show it on my face in any way.) [and another minute later] Coworker: [Munch. Munch.] My system 1/ intuitive brain (silently, in my head): Argh!! Didn't you hear me?? Stop ...

Noisily searching to be calm was something I was doing that for a long time. It involved trying to control a lot. I tried to maintain a circumstances, make changes and repeating certain practises so I could be calm. But all that was done within a misunderstanding of how life works. Because, life is changeable and this world of form nothing is permanent. And if we don't get that, we are in constant a state of resistance. Maybe you are familiar with how that resistance feels. It certainly doesn't help you be calm. And the strange thing is, when we see this truth, accept how life works and stop fighting against the natural flow of changing form, we tend to naturally be calm more of the time. Understanding how life works is the key and I can help you see that with my gentle coaching conversations.

DJ Captain Flatcap - Noisily Festival Treehouse Stage 2019 Mix (DJ & Live Flute) With an atmosphere like no other, Noisily is one of my all time favourite festivals. It was the first music festival that we ever played back in 2012, and I've been lucky enough to come back and play many times since. I decided to really mix it up this year, and not just play dancefloor bangers. Prepare for a sonic journey, where I delve into the more weird and psychedelic music that I'm into… as well as plenty of bangers!! After the audio recording of this set failed I didn't think I'd be able to share it with you guys. But after essentially re-recording the whole thing, and syncing it to the video, it's now available for you to enjoy! It was awesome fun both preparing and performing this set, so I hope you guys dig it. Huge love to Charles, Lachie, James and all the Noisily crew, who make such a unique and beautiful thing happen. Festival season may be far behind us now but soon we’ll be considering our options for Summer 2019. Each year more incredible outdoor fiestas bubble up and its often the long-running micro-festivals that provide some of the most epic and transformational weekends. Leading the pack is the amazing Noisily Festival, an inclusive haven where underground music thrives and self expression flourishes. Rooted in the electronic music scenes, Noisily has more recently been expanding into a celebration of psychedelic art and culture in a society which is increasingly looking within for happiness and fulfilment, and away from material goods and money as the definition of success I caught up with one of it’s co-creators - Lachie Gordon - to talk about how they are making the festival better and better every year and why 2019 is the year you should visit.
