The world is buzzing about Netflix's latest documentary - The Social Dilemma is an eye-opening look into the mindsets of the giant corporations that so many of us spend hours each day making richer and richer. Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and even our email accounts and search engines deeply depend on how much time they can get us to spend on their sites. The longer we do, the more money they make. And have you noticed that sites like these don't ever end? You can scroll and scroll and scroll, but you won't ever find a stopping point! Sneaky, huh? However, it also points out that we can't wait around for these corporate conglomerates to decide to change their profit-over-people models. It's time to take matters into our own hands! That's why I'm talking about combatting phone addiction today on the show. Let's face it - we're all phone addicts here! If you think you aren't , let me ask you this - do you check your phone within the first 15 minutes of getting up in the morning? Yep, that's a sign of addiction my friends, just like it is with that morning coffee craving! But it's okay, we're all in the same boat here. And with a little practice, we can kick the bad habits and get our screen time down. I'm discussing tips for overcoming addiction in today's episode, including things like: turning off notifications deleting unnecessary apps using an auto-text responder making boundaries for phone use And of course, starting this all off by setting a practical goal for yourself. How much time do you really want to be spending on your phone each day? If it's anything less than 3 hours, that's a step in the right direction considering that's how much the average person is on their device daily! When you hear stats like these, it's going to make you want to do better. And you can! Now, hit play and set your phone down! In this special end of the year episode, Theresa, Jessica and Spike discuss their Winter Break. Spike talked about his floating experience. Die re:publica ist weltweit eine der wichtigsten Konferenzen über das Leben in der digitalen Gesellschaft und findet jährlich in Berlin statt. Diesmal war ich mit dem mobilen Aufnahmegerät unterwegs und habe Interviews mit Initiatoren von Crowdfunding-Projekten geführt. ( OFFTIME ) Zucker und Informationen haben viel gemeinsam - jedenfalls könnten diesem Statement die Macher der App Offtime wahrscheinlich zustimmen. Die Versorgung des Menschen mit Zucker ist überlebenswichtig, da Zucker ein Energielieferant ist. Daher ist es im Menschen angelegt, dass er süße Sachen gerne isst. Dies war jedoch in der gesamten Menschheitsgeschichte auch niemals problematisch, da Zucker ein rares Gut war. Tatsächlich ist der menschliche Körper erst seit dem letzten Jahrhundert mit einem Überangebot an Süßigkeiten konfrontiert, was in Übergewicht und daraus resultierenden Krankheiten münden kann. So ganz ähnlich geht es mit Informationen. Seit jeher sind Informationen für das Überleben wichtig - insbesondere Informationen mit sozialen Inhalten. Soziale Informationen sind wichtig, um sicherzustellen, dass man Schutz in einer Gemeinschaft finden kann. Und ähnlich wie bei Zucker gibt es erst seit kurzem bei Informationen ein Überangebot - genauer gesagt seit 2007 und der Vorstellung des iPhones. Seither können wir uns ortsunabhängig rund um die Uhr mit Informationen versorgen lassen. Permanent piepen und leuchten Smartphones um uns herum und möchten uns etwas mitteilen. Und das mit Erfolg - Smartphones unterbrechen Gespräche, Konzentration, das Arbeiten. Die genetische Anlage des Menschen ist auf solch ein Überangebot ebenso wenig vorbereitet wie auf das Überangebot an Zucker. Und auch hier können die Folgen in Krankheiten münden. Diese drei Elemente vereint er in dem Projekt „Suche nach den Nachkriegskindern“. Dort sucht er nach Menschen, die in den Kriegsjahren Jahren 1938 und 1939 sowie in den Nachkriegsjahren 1945 und 1946 geboren worden sind und in den 50er Jahren an einer 10-jährigen Studie teilgenommen haben, in der medizinische, psychologische und sozialwissenschaftliche Aspekte erhoben worden sind. Mit diesen Menschen soll nun eine Nachfolgestudie durchgeführt werden, um zu erfahren, wie unterschiedlich sich über diese lange Zeit die jeweiligen Geburtenjahrgänge entwickelt haben. Um dieses Thema voranzutreiben und sich die nötige Zeit nehmen zu können, hat Sascha Foerster bei sciencestarter bis Februar über 10.000 Euro einsammeln können. Augenhöhe Dokumentationsfilme über Arbeitsbedingungen in Firmen gibt es viele. Besonders in Erinnerung bleiben dabei Enthüllungsreportagen über Firmen, in denen Mitarbeiter ausgebeutet und unwürdig behandelt werden. Die Reportage Augenhöhe möchte dabei bewusst einen anderen Weg wählen. Sie stellt das Thema Führung in den Mittelpunkt und zeigen ohne belehrenden Überbau, ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger, wie Führung in Firmen funktionieren kann. Sie möchten positive Beispiele darstellen, Menschen in der Arbeitswelt, die versuchen, mit ihren Rahmenbedingungen, ihren Talenten und Zielen das Beste zu erreichen. Dass dies hochspannend sein kann, weil es durchaus dramatischen und spannenden Stoff gibt, hoffen die Macher von Augenhöhe. Ulf Brandes ist einer von ihnen, den ich kurz vor der Abschlussveranstaltung der re:publica getroffen habe und mit ihm einmal über das Projekt spreche.
