The Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences turned 100 this fall. It's just eight years older than Methusaleh, the 92-year-old lungfish that arrived in 1938. The aquarium is home to 60,000 animals representing 1,000 species. Steinhart was the first public aquarium to display flashlight fish and coconut octopuses and found innovative ways to showcase the ocean's mysterious “twilight zone.” As the Steinhart celebrates its century mark, questions remain about the role aquariums play in wildlife research, conservation, and education. We'll talk to the aquarium's director about its history and future. And we hear from you: what's your favorite aquarium memory? Guests: Bart Shepherd, senior director, Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences Rebekah Kim, head librarian, California Academy of Sciences

Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins Series Part VII in partnership with Future Food-Tech Alternative Proteins Summit, NYC June 21 - 22, 2022 “The ingredients and quality matter a lot. We've created a product that from an ingredient perspective and nutritional perspective, has some real advantages.” -Aylon Steinhart Episode Description: The plant-based alternative space is exploding! With more and more consumers demanding healthier, sustainable options, the need for alternatives to meat and dairy has grown exponentially. This trend has led to an increase in investment in both research and development of plant-based options, as well as companies focused on developing these products. Technology can enable plant-based alternatives to meet consumer expectations in terms of taste and texture, while also making them more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective than traditional animal products. Yet, in order for these foods to continue being considered healthy options for consumers, they need to be made with whole ingredients and without unnecessary additives like preservatives and artificial flavors. The good news is that there are many companies who are already doing just that. Co-founded by Aylon Steinhart, Eclipse Foods, aims to create a more sustainable, ethical, and healthy food system by developing plant-based alternatives to dairy products. Moving away from using produce from factory farms presented challenges, but Eclipse Foods knew that this action was a big step toward making an impact on the environment and human health. In this episode, Justine and Aylon discuss the crisis we'll be facing if people continue to patronize and practice industrial agriculture and the number one thing we can do to reduce our impact on climate change. They also talk about how technology has helped Eclipse Foods to develop their products and scale quickly, the factors that drive consumer purchasing decisions, and how the choice of ingredients affects the nutritional value and quality of the products being produced. Meet Aylon Steinhart: Aylon Steinhart, Founder & CEO of Eclipse Foods, is an expert in the alternative protein industry and has spoken regularly on food innovation at conferences and schools such as Harvard, MIT, Yale, Berkeley, and Stanford. In his work at the Good Food Institute, Aylon incubated dozens of startups and advised investors and strategic partners on the alternative protein space. Aylon has co-founded two startups and worked with companies such as Kraft Heinz, Nestle, and Kellogg's.

In 2019, two friends were both working in the alt-protein sector, one at the Good Food Institute and the other at Eat Just. Even though Aylon Steinhart and Thomas Bowman were both doing great things to advance the animal-free protein movement, they wondered if they should try their own hands at co-founding a food tech start-up that would put cows out to pasture and mimic dairy with plants. After serious deliberation, they both left their secure jobs to team up and found Eclipse Foods. A couple years and $15M of investment later, Eclipse is expanding, is now in Northern California Whole Foods Market locations, and is pushing the boundaries of what counts as great dairy-free ice cream. They're pushing so hard, in fact, that as you'll hear in this episode, a recent blind taste test of more than a dozen people at The Better Meat Co. found that a plurality preferred Eclipse over two other brands: Oatly and Forager. It's a compelling tale of how two friends banded together to create something out of nothing in their effort to build a more humane and sustainable food industry that's just as sweet—without relying on the exploitation of animals.

Daniel Gómez Steinhart, Cinema Studies, and 2020-21 OHC Faculty Research Fellow This book examines the history of Hollywood productions in Mexico from the mid-1940s until the early 1970s. Drawing on archival materials, it sheds light on how Hollywood formed a close relationship with the Mexican film industry through a mix of investment, production, and talent exchange. Ultimately, this project historicizes current debates about production outsourcing, trade, and immigration between the United States and Mexico while revealing the complicated cross-cultural exchanges that have long connected these two countries.

When asked what sets BioXcel Therapeutics apart from other clinical-stage biopharmaceutical companies, CFO Richard Steinhart doesn’t mention a specific drug or therapy. Instead, he describes a system that the company developed to advance the speed with which drugs are commercialized. According to Steinhart, the biotech company’s system uses artificial intelligence to reveal “hidden connections” that, once exposed, can multiply opportunities for the application of certain drugs. “Good drug developers can see first connections between drugs and diseases and they are pretty apparent to everyone out there, but second- and third-degree connections are not apparent,” explains Steinhart, who says that such connections have been too time-consuming and expensive to expose in the past. “The last company I was with took 10 years to go from the discovery (of a drug to the licensing of the discovery to a phase two trial,” adds Steinhart, who reveals that it was BioXcel’s system for shortening the path to commercialization that first attracted him. –Jack Sweeney Do you want to learn more about the experiences that shaped today’s finance leaders? As much as many will espouse the "universal language" of cinema, the experience of both making and watching films from location to location is full of fascinating difference. As someone who grew up watching films in both America and Colombia, Daniel Steinhart became attuned to look for these differences as he traveled film festivals as well. But his book, Runaway Hollywood, moves from the audience to the filmmakers who escaped the studio lot and made works across the globe in the postwar era. Peter and Dan discuss this fascinating taxonomy of taxes and tea, gaffers and genre, politics and panning shots. How exactly could this cultural exchange create a change in film style? Finally, they dive into an oddball thriller from Otto Preminger shot in London, Bunny Lake Is Missing, examining how this film balances both its unique locale and the demands of its auteur. 0:00–3:28 Opening5:11–12:52 Establishing Shots — Gilberto Perez's The Eloquent Screen13:37–1:07:22 Deep Focus — Daniel Steinhart1:08:06–1:11:33 Sponsorship Section1:12:52–1:33:02 Double Exposure — Bunny Lake Is Missing (Otto Preminger)1:33:07–1:35:50 Close

What is life after death? Many people may seek an answer to the question by looking to a traditional religion, such as Christianity or Buddhism, and offering its view of an afterlife. In Your Digital Afterlives: Computational Theories of Life After Death (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), Eric Steinhart presents core tenets of digitalism, a theology that transposes philosophical and theological concepts, principles, and arguments about the self, the universe and the nature of divinity into the conceptual framework of computer science. By defending the idea that everything is a computation, Steinhart, who is professor of philosophy at William Paterson University, defends a new way of thinking about the nature of life and the nature of death, and thus about the question of life after death. In his version of digitalism, there is no such thing as judgment in the Christian sense; your soul is simply a program that will rerun on a progression of superior computers.
