Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The History Project looks back at the beginnings of West Virginia's chemical industry, starting with salt production…hike among towering old-growth trees at Watoga State Park…and the family owned Warwood Tool has been in business longer than West Virginia has been a state…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – Lured to West Virginia by its nascent salt industry, the brine made it possible for the chemical industry to flourish. Though there were plants around the state, the industry mostly made their home in the Kanawha Valley, stretching from Belle to a town created just for chemical-making, Nitro. Highs and lows unique to the industry have altered production but it continues to thrive in the Mountain State. Tune in to The History Project to learn more about the birth and growth of West Virginia's chemical industry. And don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos on the famous people, places and events that shaped West Virginia Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QQHxv0bgE0   #2 – From ONLY IN YOUR STATE – To live in West Virginia is to experience some of the most stunning wilderness in America. It probably comes as no surprise, then, that West Virginia is home to its fair share of old-growth forests. These are places where the trees have grown freely for decades and, in many cases, centuries, having been spared from logging and other deforestation efforts.  Today, we're grateful for these magical places that feel that help make West Virginia so wild and wonderful. If you'd like to explore one of these places, plan a visit to Watoga State Park in Marlinton. You'll hike among towering trees and explore some of the region's best views. At the heart of this park is a special wilderness area tucked away between the Ann Bailey Trail and the Burnside Ridge Trail. This is where you'll discover a 500-acre grove of hardwoods, home to some true giants. Visit wvstateparks.com to learn more about Watoga and reserve lodging. Read more: https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/nature/west-virginia/coolest-wilderness-area-wv   #3 – From WV DED – Nearly a decade before West Virginia's statehood, a small business in what would become Ohio County began supplying products to Civil War soldiers. Since its inception, Warwood Tool has supplied products in every war and the town of Warwood, West Virginia, sprung up around the business.  Warwood Tool is a family owned and operated business. In 168 years of operation, the company has only changed ownership seven times. Family is still a focus at the company where President Chris Azur and Chief Operating Officer Rob Taylor prioritize and honor the traditions and skilled labor of the employees present, and owners past.  The hard working, highly skilled employees at Warwood Tool are one of the reasons the business continues to say “Yes to West Virginia.” Watch the video: https://westvirginia.gov/industrial-grade-hand-forged-tools-made-right-here-in-yeswv-meet-warwood-tool/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Dec. 14  A new food truck is dishing up gourmet egg rolls with unique ingredients. What's rarer than catching a monster trout? That same monster trout was caught two years in a row. And robotics students prepare to converge on a Triadelphia arena next month…on today's daily304. #1 – From WBOY-TV – When you think of egg rolls, you probably think of the free side dish you get with a Chinese take-out meal, but there's a food truck where egg rolls come in more than 100 varieties and are served up as the main course. “Everything tastes better in an egg roll wrapper,” said Anthony Pierce, owner-operator of the Rollie Pollie Egg Roll Factory, a food truck serving northeast West Virginia as well as parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Pierce, a former executive chef, runs the food truck with his wife, Megan. The couple has developed 110 recipes for fillings—everything from the gourmet (filet mignon and lobster tail) to simple comfort foods (pepperoni rolls and pierogies). “That's the trick is to get everyone to not think of it as an egg roll,” said Pierce. “We get questions like ‘is there cabbage in all of them or is there eggs in all of them?' It's just the wrapper and it's just grandma recipes wrapped up and deep fried.” For a schedule of food truck appearances and events, or to inquire about booking and availability, check out Rollie Pollie Egg Roll Factory on social media or call 1-83-EGGROLLS Read more: https://www.wboy.com/news/local/restaurant-road-trip/restaurant-road-trip-rollie-pollie-egg-roll-factory/    #2 – From WBOY – When the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Monster Trout contest wrapped up last month, angler Dylan Young was surprised when his name was not announced, despite catching a tagged monster trout. For the contest, six monster trout, weighing between 3-6 pounds, were tagged. Anglers who caught one of the tagged fish won either a weekend cabin stay at a West Virginia State Park or a Cabela's prize package. When Young questioned the WVDNR about the trout, they said that his fish was tagged as part of the 2022 Monster Trout Contest, which is actually pretty rare. Trout that are stocked are meant to be fished out within a year of their release and rarely last for a long time in the wild. Anthony Creek, where Young caught the monster trout, is stocked regularly and was even stocked the day he caught the 2022 fish. He also said he fishes there regularly and has never caught a tagged fish before. The WVDNR said that this story is proof that just because your favorite trout fishing spot feels “fished out” doesn't mean that you can't still get the catch of a lifetime. Preparations are happening now for the “Gateway To The West” regional tournament in Ohio County, selected by VEX Robotics as a site for one of 26 “signature events” where competitors may qualify for the world championships.  Eighty middle school teams and an additional 80 high school teams are expected to attend the four-day robotics competition, according to JoJo Shay, innovation coordinator for Ohio County Schools.  The last two years have seen Ohio County robotics teams win the West Virginia robotics championship and automatically qualify for the world championships. “The community has supported this program over the years,” Shay said. “Now we're excited to have this event to allow students who don't get to go to worlds experience a signature event. This will also bring people to the area and help us celebrate the area. It's a way to give back for all the support we've received.” Read more: https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/top-headlines/2023/12/highlands-sports-complex-in-ohio-county-to-host-regional-robotics-tournament/?fbclid=IwAR2oPIdNgiAuR1UbeaqYjjyllQZjBBVmZrqTjpGuY_Hz4Ja01TxG2FGgWvg   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. The new portion of the facility will manufacture intraocular lenses, which are artificial lenses used in cataract surgery procedures. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Oct. 1  A hand-built recumbent electric motorcycle is just one of the amazing inventions you can view at the WV Makes Festival…Wellsburg residents celebrate their new bridge…and 3 WV schools earn Blue Ribbon status…on today's daily304. #1 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – Should Evan Stewart's 9-foot-long, 500-pound motorcycle coast to a stop alongside your vehicle at a stoplight, you won't hear any engine noise when the light turns green, and you might need to take a second look to spot its rider. Stewart is the inventor and fabricator of what might be the world's first fully operational recumbent electric motorcycle, capable of operating at interstate highway speeds while allowing its operator to lean back in comfort in a low-mounted reclining seat with a backrest. Stewart, who grew up in Charleston and has a degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University, designed and built the motorcycle with help from his father, Tom.  He says he's working on getting the motorcycle street legal. Until then, you can view it on display at the West Virginia Makes Festival Oct. 6 at Marshall University. The WVDOT has released a video featuring interviews from five people in the Wellsburg area who worked for decades to try to find support for a bridge for their community. The video, featuring Helen Mayle, Walt Ferguson, Jason Ferguson, Jack Yost, and Tim Ennis, and titled "Wellsburg, A Dream (Bridge) Come True" is available on WVDOT's YouTube channel.  “I used to come across on the ferry, and the ferry froze in the river and sank in 1948," said Helen Mayle, member of the Citizen's Bridge Committee, who formed decades ago in support of the bridge. “We haven't had a crossing since.” Watch the video: https://transportation.wv.gov/communications/PressRelease/Pages/A_Dream_Come_True.aspx   #3 – From WV METRO NEWS – Congratulations to three West Virginia elementary schools that have earned National Blue Ribbon status. The U.S. Department of Education bestowed the honor upon 353 schools across the nation this year. West Virginia's 2023 Blue Ribbon schools are Jayenne Elementary School in Marion County, Sherman Elementary School in Boone County and Ritchie Elementary School in Ohio County.  Governor Jim Justice had high praise for the staff and students from all three schools. He said these schools have laid out a blueprint for improvement and a path for other schools to strive in getting the same award. “The recognition is based on overall academic performance or progress and it's absolutely an honor,” he said. That “star” is The Bullock Distillery's flagship Karst Water Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which recently won a rare and coveted Double Gold designation at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The competition is the largest in North America, with thousands of entries, but only a few dozen Double Golds.  “Every bottle we entered won,” says sales manager Royce Tanner. “Our vodka won Silver, our Gin won Gold, and our bourbon won Double Gold.” Learn more at www.bullockdistillery.com. Because the South Branch Potomac flows through the rain shadow of the Allegheny Front and to the east of North Fork Mountain—the driest single ridgeline in the entire Appalachian Mountain range—it is a low-flow rio that typically offers a brief window of reliable levels for paddling in early spring. It's called low-water paddling, and it's as X-stream as it gets. (Get it? because no water means it's an ex-stream). “In late April 2021, the South Branch Potomac was at 2.4 feet—just a smidge below the recommended level. But given our newfound love for this world-class stretch of river, we decided to test the waters and see just how low we could go,” Jones writes.  Read more: https://highland-outdoors.com/low-water-paddling/   #3 – From THE WHEELING INTELLIGENCER – The Ohio County Public Library unveiled a new mural inside the library's main floor recently, offering a colorful change of scenery with an unusual combination of inspirational figures. Completed by local artist Vondel Bell, the new mural called “Colors and Thoughts” is anchored by a cross-section of a human brain divided into “left-brain, right-brain” hemispheres, highlighting the theory that people boast different personalities because of their use of different parts of their brains.  The mural also features two famous figures who embody these two different characteristics — poet Maya Angelou and theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. The faces of the two 20th century icons are shown in vibrant color, and they are positioned with a twist – as Angelou appears on the analytical side of the brain and a laughing Einstein appears on the artistic side. “I think it's beautiful,” said Sean Duffy, programming director and local history specialist at the library, noting that the mural offers several positive messages – particularly that the library is a place where everyone is free to think and express themselves without judgment. June 13, 1977. Ohio County, West Virginia. Roberta Elam, a 26-year old postulant known as “Sister Robin” who is planning to become a nun, is seen living the motherhouse of the Mount St. Joseph convent. Hours later, Sister Robin's body is found on top of a nearby hill in a secluded mediation area and she has been raped and strangled to death. There is immediate speculation that the crime might be connected to the murders of four other young women, which took place in neighbouring Washington County during the preceding months. However, in recent years, investigators have started looking at a potential suspect who supposedly confessed to Sister Robin's murder. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover the unsolved death of Sister Roberta Elam and explore its potential connection to a number of other homicides which took place during that time period. If you have any information about the murder of Sister Roberta Elam, please contact the Ohio County Sheriff's Office at (304) 234-3680. If you have information about any of the other cold cases mentioned on this episode, please contact the Washington County Sheriff's Office at (740) 373-2833.
