Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.My father snorted if he was irritated. When he tried to teach me to parallel park he snorted enough for a lifetime - and still I didn’t learn. I’ve spent my life avoiding parallel parking until the other day when I was faced with only one parking space - on the tiny road - that led to my favorite beach walk. I lined up my car, cut the wheels, backed up, pulled forward and parked. I stepped out of my car to see an absolutely perfect parallel parking job.Imagine this: A woman in her Middle Earth years clapping wildly because she (finally) nailed it.Question: What achievement are you going to wildly clap about today? Christine is a true Vermonter in every way: she is part Abenaki, and her entire family has been here for generations. Growing up working-class in a working-class town, she knows what it feels like to be disregarded. When she finally gets the chance to go to college as a working mother, she is awakened to her own intelligence. She decides to teach history, focusing on the history of women and Native Americans. She believes history is very personal, and her students learn history by making it personal. She makes a decent living, but it is only because her union has fought hard for it -- and they have to keep on fighting for it. Finding parking is always a hassle, but perfectly parallel parking? That seems almost impossible. If you street park a car in a large city, you may dread every time you switch on your blinkers and start to back up. So, in order to ease all this pain and frustration, we teamed up with our dear friends at Jalopnik to put together this easy video guide on how to parallel park like a pro. Our car expert, Andrew P.

Today's episode was inspired by taking my son out yesterday to practice parallel parking in preparation for his upcoming driver's test. He was struggling to get the feel of the car just right, and I happened upon this little nugget to help him. Once I did, he parked perfectly within 4-5 inches every time.
