South Side Sox: for Chicago White Sox fans

Is it sheer coincidence that with a White Sox fan in charge of things in the Vatican the team won three out of four prior to this recording? Duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and current Ohio Valley correspondent (while doing a play in Cincinnati) Will delve into the papal impact, as Will points out that suffering is a major factor in Catholicism, which could well explain why Leo XIV became a White Sox fan even though his mother rooted for the Cubs and his father for the Cardinals (although, of course, he went on to become a cardinal himself). The cast ranges from the divine to the execrable, ending with a discussion on Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson and the fact MLB teams themselves operate virtual casinos and inundate innocent fans with efforts to tempt them into their dens of gambling iniquity, so banning the two is now hugely hypocritical. The duo have suggestions on how Cooperstown should cope with those so far banned for gambling, or worse, steroid use, suggestions that will never be followed. In between the discussion is all White Sox, from the pleasant, like how to handle having too many good players at one position (catcher) and the hitting of Edgar Quero and the rejuvenated Miguel Vargas. On the less pleasant side, it's the position situation at first base, with the question there being whether Tim Elko coming to the team has caused Andrew Vaughn to improve his play and whether it's possible, if Elko turns out to be for real after the league writes its book on him, a desperate Boston would take Vaughn to replace the injured Tristan Casas. Is there any chance the Mariners success on offense is rubbing off on the Seahawks for this next season especially on the O-Line? // The Mariners are starting their series with the Blue Jays who have been on a terrible streak offensively, should be a series where there’s no excuse to losing to the Blue Jays? // Take Two: Troy Taylor recalled, Trent Thornton placed on 15-day IL with appendicitis…Mariners and Blue Jays have played 8 straight 1-run games in Seattle. Sam Haggerty is batting leadoff and starting in centerfield for the Rangers in their opener today in Detroit…A’s host the Yankees for three // Luis Castillo gets the start for the Mariners tonight, what do you want to see out of him tonight? Send us a textIt was more fun talking about This Week in Baseball goings-on since #MLB team captains are kinda unimportant. A vestige of 19th century baseball, there are only three team captains in the Majors today. # Yankees Aaron Judge #Royals Salvador Perez, & #Rangers Marcus Semien.  Why aren't there more? We dive into that thought in this week's episode. Four of the five teams in the #ALWest are .500 or better. Who'da thunk it? Jacob DeGrom is looking like prime DeGrom for Texas. Pitching injuries continue to be the story of the 2025 season.  Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow of the #Dodgers are both on the IL. The boys from L.A. keep on winning.  How about the Tampa Bay #Rays?  They have had a bunch of home games scheduled in the early part of the season because there is not roof over Steinbrenner Field in Tampa - the temporary home of the Rays. If you didn't know, it rains a bunch in the afternoons and evenings in Tampa in the summer. So MLB is trying to avoid rainouts and scheduled the Rays for a lot of road trips after May. ]#RedSox puzzle us. Injuries yes, to Tristan Casas, hurt,  but the Sox just find ways to lose instead of ways to win. #Yankees are in 1st place by default. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! He also gets to the Revolution who beat Toronto FC over the weekend to improve their winning streak to four games and continued their shutout streak as well. He talks about the team's change of identity in the last few seasons and how they seem to be adapting well to Caleb Porter's system. The anticipation builds as we continue to dissect the possibilities for the Seahawks in the draft, but one thing remains fairly certain- the Hawks will go for the best player available when they pick at 18, regardless of position. :30- ABCs of the Mariners - S is for strain. That seems to be the issue with Mariners pitching right now; the bullpen seems to be overused because the starters are inefficient in most outings. - T is for trade and also Tristan Casas… remember those trade rumors that had Luis Castillo heading to Boston for Casas? - U is for umpiring- last night was the perfect opportunity for Dan Wilson to get kicked out of the game over bad calls :45- Let's get Reckless at Breakfast! Experts are saying that Colston Loveland won't be available for the Hawks at 18, so what other tight end options are there? Would the Ravens consider trading Mark Andrews and would we make that trade?

Fred Zinkie and Jeff Erickson try to find 2024 comps to the 2023 First Half / Second Half heroes and bums. Who is this year's Julio Rodriguez Who will be the young slugger that figures it out, like Tristan Casas was last season? --- 00:00 - First Half / Second Half Podcast 01:30 - Who is this year's Tristan Casas? A young slugger who has a blah first half and then breaks out in second half. 02:10 - Micheal Busch. He was always powerful in the Minors (59 HR in 2022-23). Outside of May, has hit for average (albeit with a high BABIP). The power will play eventually. With the Cubs out of the race (kind of), he will play. 05:45 - Who will be this year's Julio Rodriguez? An underwhelming star who gets on track in the second half. 08:20 - Alternate - Pete Alonso. His HR/FB% is a career low. Average exit velocity if down, but only slightly. Warm weather, Mets hanging around in the race….I'll say that he hits more than 20 HR after the ASB. 14:45 - Who will be this year's Cal Raleigh? A catcher who becomes a game-changer by hitting for elite power in the second half. Mitch Garver. Has quietly his 6 homers since June 6. May not hit for average, but he producing plenty of fly balls. K rate and BB rate each improved a bit in June too. 19:15 - Who will be this year's CJ Abrams? A player who catches fire on the basepaths in the second half. 19:50 - Wyatt Langford. Ranks 11th in baseball in average sprint speed. Stole six bases in June. Rangers fall out of the race and let Langford learn to steal bases in the second half by running as much as he wants. 23:45 - Who will be this year's Alex Verdugo or Nolan Arenado? A veteran who falls apart in the second half. 25:45 - Cody Bellinger. I know his first half wasn't great, but Statcast suggests it should have been even worse. Cubs fall out of the race and he's unplayable in the second half. 33:40 - Who will be this year's Freddy Peralta? A skilled starter who underachieves in the first half and thrives in the second half. 34:15 - Pablo Lopez. Similar to Peralta, he pitches for a solid team and has great SO skills. Just needs some decent luck. 40:15 - Who will be this year's Lucas Giolito? A starter who is playable in the first half and destroys teams in the second half. 41:05 - Jose Berrios. This may be cheating, because it has already happened, but I'm not sure anyone has noticed. His season-long numbers (3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) still say, “start me every week”. The Jays season is already over, and things will be ugly for starters like Berrios when they go with a full youth movement down the stretch. 44:40 - Andrew Abbott 46:45 - Who will be this year's Adbert Alzolay? A reliever who takes hold of the closer's role in the second half. 47:20 - Jeff Hoffman. Holy moly, this guy has been good this year. The Phillies went a long stretch without a save, and since that ended he has collected 3 of their 4 saves. He's their best reliever and could completely take the job from Jose Alvarado. Of course, they could trade for a closer. But they don't need to. 49:30 - Monday game recaps: Is Paul Sewald close to losing the closer's role? --- Home Run Forecast Home Run Forecast is offering a special for the start of the baseball season. Fantasy Baseball Live – October 29, 2023 @ 3 pmSegment 1 – World Series Discussion1.We are tied 1-1Segment 2 – Fantasy Questions of the AL East1.Baltimore Oriolesa.Put your GM cap on. Give me two moves that you would do to prevent the Orioles from going three and out in next year's playoffs.i.Do the Orioles make the playoffs in 2024?b.Roster Resource has Jackson Holliday as the starting shortstop. Do you believe this will happen?c.Stat line for Jordan Westburg – AB, HR, SB, and BAd.Kyle Bradish is going as the 37th pitcher off the board (25th starter). Is this something that interest you? Too high? Too low?i.Is he someone you are personally interested in?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (Minor and/or Major)2.Boston Red Soxa. After some starts and stops, Jarren Duran was pretty good last season—.295/.346/.482 with 8 HRs and 24 SBs in only 362 plate appearances. Statcast shows above-average hard hit rates, elite speed but contact issues (25% K-Rate), and 6.6% BB-Rate. He also had a .381 BABIP.i.With all that, he's the 45th outfielder off the board. Any interest as your #3 outfielder?b.Tristan Casas will hit ________________ home runs in 2024.c.I believe you mentioned that Brayan Bello is one of your targets this year. If so, what are you liking?d.Give me a sleeper in the organization (Minor and/or Major)3.New York Yankeesa.Anthony Volpe went 20-20 (21 HR and 24 SB), but he also hit .209 with a .283 OBP while striking out 28% of the time. He also posted a .259 BABIP. At 22, you have to consider him as a player who is still developing, and given how deep shortstop is, he's only the 18th shortstop off the board.i.Would you take him as your MI? Would you wait and take him as your starting SS? Or, just avoid him? b.Over/Under 400 at-bats for Giancarlos Stanton? He is going as the 86th outfielder off the board. On the surface, this seems like value, but why do I have this “wasted pick” feeling? Your thoughts?c.Put your GM hat on. What three moves would you make for the Yankees to return to the playoffs?d.Michael King will finish as a top _______________ pitcher in fantasy baseball.i.He's going as the 61st pitcher off the board or the 39th starter. Too rich for you, or are you taking the plunge?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (Minor and/or Major)4.Tampa Bay Raysa.Wander Franco – Over/Under 1 game played in 2024? If over, how many?b.Isaac Paredes was one of my sleepers last season, but I didn't expect 31 home runs. In looking at the data, he's a launch angle guy (22 degrees) but doesn't hit the ball all that hard (6% hard-hit rate). He has a great strikeout rate (18.2%).i.Are you buying the 31 home runs? If not, how many are you penciling in?ii.He is going as the 23rd 3B off the board, so in early drafts, it doesn't seem like people believe.c.Josh Lowe was great as a platoon player last season – 20 HR, 32 SB. Is that enough production to ignore the hit on Runs and RBIs you will take, although he had 83 RBIs last season?i.He is going as the 18th outfielder off the board.d.Shane Baz should be back early next season from TJS (surgery was on 9/24/22). Sneaky pick or somebody to ignore? 91st pitcher off the board (60th or so starter)e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (Minor and/or Major)5.Toronto Blue Jaysa.Vlad is in a three-year decline in home runs (48, 32, and last year, 26) but is still only 25 (next season). He makes excellent contact (14.7% strikeout rate), with high-end exit velos and more launch than he ever had last season. i.He's dropped down to the third round? Is there value there, or are you in the camp that he's a good player but will not be a great player?b.Davis Schneider – stat line for 2024 – AB, BA, and HR.c.I felt Alejandro Kirk was an overdraft as a Top 5 catcher last season. This year, he's hated and is going as the 25th catcher. Will you take a gamble with him as your second catcher?d.Alek Manoah – Over/under 20 starts in Toronto in 2024?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (Minor and/or Major)CloseThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3306394/advertisement
