Jake Jordan is a legendary figure in the blue water world. He is neither humble nor reserved when he speaks about his exploits over his six plus decades of catching tarpon, marlin and sailfish; we're talking incredible numbers here. He prides himself with a technique he refined that has proven itself to many anglers that chase billfish. He's not a record chaser, he is a numbers man. How do you document 10,000 sailfish he said he's caught? For tarpon, he fishes at night under bridges in the lower keys. April and May, during a certain night time tide is when these fish let their guard down and catching a tarpon is almost a given. There's no poling under a high sun, seeing fish swim down the flat here. But being 80+ years old it's all but impossible for him to do the daytime game anymore. You got to hand it to him, he's still out there getting it done! Jake is a kind man. I've known him for years and see him at the trade shows. When asked, he said he'd like to be remembered mostly as an innovator, teacher and mentor. He's been honored with the Chester H. Then back to Costa Rica with his Costa Rican wife and that's when Fly Fishing Costa Rica was born. 07:15 - Greg Collett was on the podcast at WFS 242 where we talked about Ecuador Conservation 07:30 - Tom describes Costa Rica as one of the happiest countries in the world. They don't even have an army. 10:50 - Their main program at this time this year is the jungle tarpon reserve. It rains up until November then the rain slows down from December up until April. 12:30 - December to April is their dry season and that's when they fish Machaca. These are related to piranha but eat fruit and flowers. 14:55 - Tom loves fishing Tepemechín (Mountain Mullet). They're small but powerful. 16:30 - Marlin fishing in the Pacific Ocean is great from May until November 18:00 - There are 2 different types of Machaca in Costa Rica - one lives in the Caribbean and the other lives in the Pacific. In March and April, the wild cashew tree produces fruit that the Pacific Machaca feeds on. For the Caribbean machaca, they feed on Chilamate tree fruits. 20:00 - They have rainbow trout all year but the best time to fish them is the dry season 21:00 - The Costa Rica Grand Slam is a tarpon, trout, and billfish fishing 25:41 - Tom breaks down what a 1-week itinerary looks like 27:15 - Tom tells us how they make that perfect "kerplunk" - a funny term they use for putting the fly on the water that drives the machaca crazy. I came across an article that he wrote on LinkedIn around Community and it gave me half an excuse to bring him on the show. Because there are 100 things I can talk to Jake about and we usually do when we get together. So I really wanted to talk to him today about this concept of community when it comes to building your business. And we're not talking about a community you can build with an audience or clients. Or even the connotation some people have that involves networking groups. Those are both important, too. But what we're talking about is that core group of business owners who can help you level up and really dig into things that either you're having an issue with, or you don't even know is an issue but others see it and help you with it. And really have that accountability. And a big part of this concept is that it's not a "nice to have". Having some version of this is mandatory for your business to thrive, especially at the kind of speed I'm sure you want it to. I thankfully stumbled upon Bob Burg and John David Mann's powerful book "The Go-Giver" after doing the right thing for a home seller but told by a manager I'd never be successful in real estate if I didn't put the broker's policies ahead of the consumer. Jake talks about using marketing tools to reach them with critical information that they need - for the 'right now'. That may not be what you think it is, so listen to the marketplace. What are they looking for the most? Make sure you're focusing on their greatest need.Most businesses are on 'survival mode'. Suzanne reminds us to consider the situation your customers are going through. Make sure to stock up on that they need. Check with suppliers about any surplus, and find out what is getting phased out. This will help you be the one they keep coming back to. Don't ignore the power of an email and text list so you can notify people when trucks are delivering. Set up certain times and accommodations for seniors, and post it on your doors and website.
