Director Simon Otto is here to chat failed Christmas gifts, formative films, and finding the balance of a multithreaded storyline story and having to take into account theatrical experience versus streaming consumption. This interview contains mild spoilers for That Christmas. More about Simon Otto Simon Otto is the Director of That Christmas. He started his directing career on the Netflix animated series Dragons: Race to the Edge and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. Most recently, he directed the Love, Death & Robots episode ‘The Tall Grass' and developed, executive produced and served as the Supervising Director on the successful Netflix series, A Tale Dark & Grimm. Prior to turning to directing, he spent over 20 years working at DreamWorks Animation, most notably as the Head of Character Animation on the Oscar-nominated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. In that role, Simon oversaw the character animation and was instrumental in designing and developing the look of the characters, their personalities, and the overall style of the animation, while also working in the story department as a story artist. He first joined DreamWorks in 1997 to work on the groundbreaking The Prince of Egypt and worked as a Supervising Animator both in hand-drawn and CG animation on many of the studio's features including, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and the Aardman co-production Flushed Away. Born and raised in Switzerland, Simon studied animation at the prestigious Les Gobelins Animation School in Paris, France. More about That Christmas Based on the charming trilogy of children's books by beloved multi award-winning writer/director Richard Curtis (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, NOTTING HILL, LOVE ACTUALLY, YESTERDAY), THAT CHRISTMAS follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys! This heartwarming comedy from Locksmith Animation marks Curtis' first foray into animation, serving as the film's writer and executive producer, and also the feature directorial debut of renowned animation veteran Simon Otto (LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON FILMS). Nicole P. Hearon (MOANA, FROZEN) and Adam Tandy (THE THICK OF IT, DETECTORISTS) are producers.

Quick Content Warning: There is some colorful language in this podcast episode. Listener discretion is advised. Season 3 of the eleven-time Emmy winning series LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS hit Netflix on May 20th and we are delighted to sit down with creator Tim Miller, supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, and supervising sound editor Brad North to discuss how they managed to succeed where so many others have failed — creating a hit anthology television series. "It really comes down to who's doing the shorts. There's been a lot of care trying to match-make: The shorts, the stories, the directors, and the studios. You've got a whole lifetime of experience with people and studios that Tim has worked with at Blur. People that have been doing incredible content, that maybe haven't had the opportunity to do a feature yet, because of the size and experimentalism of that particular place. And to be able to hook them up with really good, solid stories that they can put all of their effort into making that, actually, great. You're not spinning a lot of wheels here. You're doing amazing. Everything goes right to the screen." — Jennifer Yuh Nelson, Supervising Director, LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS Be sure to https://www.netflix.com/title/80174608 (check out LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS, only on Netflix.) It's an uncomfortable fact for the technical crew of TV newsrooms that a flawless broadcast will go unnoticed by viewers at home, but a technical snafu will probably make the blooper reel and go viral online. That's why the technical wizards behind each broadcast work so hard to make everything look flawless -- including sometimes keeping the on air journalists in the dark about chaos unfolding in the control room. BTS with CTV Vancouver host Penny Daflos sits down with Supervising Director, Alex Huang, for an unvarnished look at the modern-day control room -- one dominated by automation where even the smallest error can result in the kind of cringe-worthy on-air mishaps that prompt colouful language behind the scenes.
