Send us a textEpisode Title: The Making of Magic vs. BirdEpisode Summary:The game was significant not only for the intense rivalry between these two future NBA stars, but also for its record-breaking viewership. The game drew in 24.1 rating, meaning a quarter of all television sets in America were tuned in, making it the highest-rated basketball game ever (college or pro). The episode likely explores their humble beginnings,  the lead-up to the game and the impact this matchup had on their careers and the sport of basketball.A key element highlighted in the sources is the "storybook" quality of both players' journeys to the championship game.Larry Bird, who could have gone pro earlier, chose to stay at Indiana State, leading his team to the brink of a national title.Magic Johnson's performance fueled speculation that he would soon join the NBA.The episode might also feature a retelling of the game itself, potentially including key moments and commentary on the players' styles. The reference to the World Invitational tournament where Bird and Johnson played together suggests the episode could include their early interactions and budding rivalry. The Season starts with Bird's High School Career in French Lick, Indiana, Bird's hometown, hinting at a deep dive into Bird's background and path to basketball stardom.Support the showSupport the Pod or Binge the Entire Season Now! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1269236/support https://youtube.com/@IconicSeasons Connect on Social https://www.instagram.com/ncaaiconicseasons/

On today's episode Elite was able to interview Edina's Finest, Former UST Sharp Shooter, Former Pro Hooper, and current Assistant Coach for the University of St. Thomas, Will DeBerg! Will walked us through his basketball journey. From an exceptional High School Career, to overcoming adversity for the first time in his life during his college career, to then finishing his college career on top. Working the prestigious Kobe Bryant basketball camps, sneaking into gyms to try and get some shots up but accidentally walking in on Kobe in the middle of a workout. Playing professionally overseas, and the hilarious stories of locals not believing he was a pro basketball player due to lack of height. Another challenge Will discusses was how he came home from playing pro ball to then join the corporate world and one day woke up and realized it wasn't for him. Instead Will packed his bags travelled the world, then came home and asked Coach John Tauer for a job on his staff, 5 years later and Will is still going strong! We dive into the difficulties of recruiting during a pandemic and the challenges UST will face making the jump to D1. Another thing that stood out during our conversation was how much Will values giving back. Will just finished year 13 of his basketball camp in Edina as has had over 2000 kids come through the camp and be trained by him, some of the children have now grown up and signed their own pro contracts overseas. Will also plans on doing more camps in 3rd world countries to give back, Will has already done one in Haiti, and once the pandemic ends, the plan is to do more! A must listen!
