There is an overarching investment philosophy that permeates most of what we do here at the Rational Reminder Podcast, and while some guests' positions might differ at times, it is rare that we have someone on the show whose approach is as strongly contrasted with ours, as Professor Brad Cornell. Professor Cornell's arguments are so well-founded and researched that they require a re-examination of positions that we feel have been a given for us for a long time. He is the author of about 150 referenced articles, four books, and has conducted hugely interesting work on the current state of value investing. His research with Aswath Damodaran, and insights into Tesla's valuation provide great food for thought, and we get into all of this on today's show! Our conversation also covers ways to go about picking a fund manager and a slightly different lens through which to view past performance. We feel truly grateful to have such a different, yet valid, perspective expressed so well here, and cannot wait to share this highly useful information with all of our listeners. Once again Clay Ranfield joins Heavy and Gustav to talk about pro-mayonnaise articles and the world we live in.  Ty was off on vacation so Clay sat in with us for a session where three middle aged guys in their forties talk about modern angst.  But before we get to the that we have some fun.  Gustav retells the story of Gustav and the Three Bears  and how the Kids in the Hall warped him forever. They then discuss David Letterman's new show, which Letterman was the best and Gustav hopes that Andy Kaufman faked his own death just like he faked everything else. Aaron asks us if we would commit sepuku.  Kim asks us what we think about the president tweeting. Gustav revisits the question he asked Professor Brad on a previous episode and wonders why young people are so angry.  Heavy approaches it from a practical standpoint and a thoughtful conversation somehow emerges. This episode Gustav is blessed to have Professor Brad join him for the second part of their rambling conversation which covers prostitution, environmental determinism, circumcision talk and the Articles of Confederation. Professor Brad is an award winning historian and author and Gustav of course is just a guy who thinks he knows stuff.  So it's only natural for the two of them to discuss the possible merits for society of prostitution.  Then they misidentify the wrong historic Louisiana governor, but that's not important, since they were on a roll. Brad tries to lure Gustav into political talk, but instead they settle on discussing their general location on the current political spectrum which then turns into Articles of Confederation talk.    That leads to further discussion of socialism, democracy and libertarianism. Gus asks if Brad remembered being as angry politically in his youth as the current landscape seems to be.  The idea that a president needs a "Bad Guy" adversary is postulated. Discussing presidents brings up the idea of the winners in history not always having to answer for their own sins as great as the defeated must.  Gus and Brad discuss FDR's internment camps as a prime example. And then Brad yanks the wheel and we head into the ditch for circumcision talk which somehow leads to Brad dispelling environmental determinism.   So send us your emails about presidents, collectivism, circumcision or  the Articles of Confederation to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter @canyouhearmepod @realgustav @tywebb3000 @longmireheavy Find us on Tumblr and Instagram @canyouhearmepod The post Professor Brad – Articles of Confederation appeared first on Can You Hear Me?.

Since Heavy and Ty are still absent without leave, Gustave recruited Professor Brad to talk about movies, productivity, Dragon's Lair and much more.   This week will be appearance one for Professor Brad in a special two week engagement. Starting of Brad and Gus discuss all of Brad's major awards as he is the only doctor on the Blowout Podcast Network, where he co-hosts the Below the Belt Podcast with his friend and smiley man Ryan.  Gustav then turns the discussion towards science fiction books and movies set or made before computers became what they are today.  That leads to a discussion about 2001: A Space Odyssey and the works of Stanley Kubrick, including A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.  (In a glaring omission, Gustav fails to mention Kubrick's Vietnam masterpiece, Full Metal Jacket, but he will discuss it in an upcoming episode that has since been recorded). You can't talk to Brad too long about anything without video games coming up.  So the discussion going from "arcades" of a certain type over to the classic Leisure Suit Larry mature themed video game series just seems natural.  That in turn bridges from the game mechanics of Sierra style games of the eighties to Gustav's memories about failing at the classic eighties arcade game Dragon's Lair.  Then Brad and Gustav discuss how they are both suffering from a perceived lack of productivity in their objectives.   So send us your emails about arcades, Dragon's Lair, eighties games or your favorite sci-fi to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter @canyouhearmepod @realgustav @tywebb3000 @longmireheavy Find us on Tumblr and Instagram @canyouhearmepod   The post Professor Brad – Dragon’s Lair appeared first on Can You Hear Me?.

Ty and Gustav are back with a myriad of topics and an unfortunate claim from someone that they are America's Favorite.  Things get heated early on as Gustav must defend the comments he made about climate change back during the Professor Brad guest appearance. Things settle down for a little bit of moccasin talk.  Gus delivers an update on a prominent moccasin manufacturer's omission of  classic style and then espouses the best traditional moccasin for walking around on rocks. Alt-Country performer Nikki Lane has been getting some airplay so that reminds Ty and Gus of the time that she met Heavy Longmire at the Old 97's County Fair. The boys then turn to talk about scorpions and they wonder about their decline in the 903 compared to when they were youngsters back in the seventies and eighties.  Scorpion talk naturally leads to a discussion about 1981's "The Clash of the Titans"  and some thrilling moments as they look up names of actresses on their phones. Willie Nelson and Family's music festival at Starplex is then discussed as well as the stances of lawn or seats. Gus recounts the one testical bear trap story for anyone who may have missed it the first time he told it. Ty discusses his first bout with acid reflux and how Copenhagen and cheap beer subsequently affected it. John Prine was just discovered by Ty so they talk about that even though Gus got Heavy listening to him back in high school. This week is the much anticipated second part of the award winning face to face interview with Professor Brad where more twitter questions are answered, crazy theories are explored and Brad lays out his plan for off the grid living. As you remember from the first part of this interview, Ty was away and the late great Heavy Longmire is lost on the prairie for all we know. But Professor Brad was kind enough to join Gustav for pseudo-intellectual mumbo jumbo.  This episode picks up with more questions submitted by our faithful listeners via Twitter, including hypotheticals (we hope) over what someone would do for a year's supply of food or for someone's latest book to make it to the top of  the New York Times bestseller list. Once the Twitter questions were done, the conversation turns to submarine talk with more hypermasculinity talk as well as a couple of apochryphal stories that may or may not be true. For a while, Brad had been wanting to talk to Gustav about the logistics of going off the grid.  Brad has his eyes set on the rugged scenery around Marfa, Texas.  So far Brad has a plan and a materials list, but Gus does his best to shoot holes in Brad's dream, the way that a slightly inebriated uncle can ruin Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and a belief in fiat currency.  Gus talks a bit about his dalliance with solar power in the past and some problems that he sees with living the off the grid lifestyle in Texas. For some reason Brad then changes the conversation to Climate Change (probably to get Gustav wound up).  The two of them then dive into talk of ice ages, pre-Columbian environmental pollution, Terrence McKenna's theory that magic mushrooms caused the development of language, fracking earthquakes and wondering whatever happened to the hole in the ozone layer and acid rain. So send us your emails about living in a half buried shipping container, climate change, or the first dirty joke you told your dad to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com And listen to Brad each week on his own podcast Below the Belt Follow us on Twitter @canyouhearmepod @realgustav @tywebb3000 @longmireheavy Find us on Tumblr and Instagram @canyouhearmepod     The post Professor Brad – Off the Grid appeared first on Can You Hear Me?.

Have you ever heard of Mexico's George Washington?  Listen to this first part of a two part special series where Gustav sits down with everyone's favorite historian, Professor Brad and maybe you will figure out what he means.  Sadly Ty and Heavy seem to have abandoned the podcast, so Gustav begged Brad to join him for what was initially going to be an hour of scholarly talk.  But lucky for the listener, the scholarly mumbo jumbo is augmented by the meandering and confusing rabbit trails that you have come to expect from Gustav and his enabler Brad. Brad starts the ball rolling with a tale of his Uncle Doobie and a hitchhiker, which fits nicely with the recent hitchhiking episode Ty and Gus did a few weeks ago.  Gustav dabbles with psychoanalyzing Brad's bad tooth pick up line, but abandons that thread for several questions that loyal listeners and fans of Brad sent in via Twitter: Cody asks about breakfast soup  Aaron inquires about Texas secession boundaries  Ginsburg asks about other books Brad would want to write  Trey wants to know who the villains of  World War I were  Tell wonders if Brad is just luring him to buy his book by telling him he is descended from great men of New Spain As you can imagine, these questions lead Gus and Brad down a myriad of dead ends, rabbit holes and erroneous statements.  Somewhere along the way Brad talks about a failed comic book idea, Gustav struggles for the name of space flight pioneer Wernher von Braun, Brad teaches us that Augustine de Iturbide was Mexico's George Washington and all other kinds of useless information. So send us your emails about changing historic perspectives, Werner von Braun, or breakfast soup to canyouhearmepod@gmail.com Be sure to listen to listen to Gustav’s guest appearance on Megan’s Movie Podcast on the Blowout Podcast Network where he and Megan talk about Tombstone. The full Can You Hear Me crew is back this week for insane ideas, funny stories and Heavy's World Famous Baked Beans.  After Gustav's history lecture last week, the boys are ready to make each other laugh. Despite trying to have a discussion about college sports team gear, Gustav derails the conversation early on with elbow talk and makes himself laugh more than any person should.  The guys get back on track and talk about the nature of Texas college sports fans.  Then Heavy and Gus vaguely remember a story about the horse from Texas Tech and recount an incident which may or may not have happened, but it makes for a good story either way (we are fully expecting hate mail from all sides after this segment). Gus asks "what made you funny?" and Ty tries to answer while Heavy works to undermine the conversation.  Ty brings up Sid Caesar's Show of Shows and Gustav tries to discuss the Marx Brothers, but it goes no where fast. Then they turn their attention to a Twitter question about why they don't use the song "Silent Running" by Mike and the Mechanics in the show open.  Gustav has reasons and he lays them out for you (but it is a great song from the eighties!). Professor Brad sends Gustav texts throughout the episode which Gustav shares with the audience. Someday he will make a guest appearance, but only via texts this week. Ty then gives some Oscar talk before Heavy talks way too much about his world famous baked beans.  The look of pride on his face as he talked about these baked beans was prouder than we have ever seen. Then, on  a roll, Heavy talks about something extremely large he found.  This is a story not for the squeamish or more delicate listeners.  Plus Ty gives some further thoughts to his timing challenge. Professor Brad's new book is available for pre-order .  You can get it at Amazon Arredondo: Last Spanish Ruler of Texas and Northeastern New Spain Gustav recounts his recent trip to the Blowout Podcast Network live event at Chat Room in Fort Worth.  He takes the time to list all of the good dudes and even a few ladies he ran into like Ginsburg, Big Burly Clay, KJ and his landlord, Hunter, Conner, Chef Rob, Josh, NvrNudeTobias, Walling, Austin and his lady, Professor Brad, Fakesportsbot, Conner, and even Jake's wife.  It was great to get to meet some folks face to face for the first time as well as seeing old friends. We got feedback on the recent episode about bedding and quilt talk from Valley Butcher and Tellito.  Tellito's story about his youthful winter sleeping arrangements leads the guys down the path of discussing the Polynesian's parents journey toward off-grid living in the Rocky Mountains. And finally there is some confusion about the astronaut that drove cross country wearing a diaper as she sought out her rival in a NASA love triangle.  As Jay put it, "this is why this isn't a news podcast."  But astronaut diaper talk brought up the specter of space diarrhea, which has to be the worst diarrhea of all.  Heavy is also disturbed by a current commercial on KTCK that discusses what your "number two" looks like.  Gustav had hoped to include the commercial's most offensive elements, but he couldn't snag the audio in time for this episode. After having been AWOL for three episodes, Ty graces us with his presence and is sporting quite the salt and pepper beard.   During his self-determined sabbatical, he was busy making a list of things he wanted to talk about. But first we tackle a listener email from Valley Butcher.  He wanted to know what our campaign platform would be.  Gustav does his best to answer honestly, but Ty and Heavy just tie it back to one of Ty's list topics, which was yelling at other people's kids.  Ty recalls two recent instances of him going all old man on some wayward youths.  Then Heavy recounts his recent intervention against a Yankee yelling at a girl at a volleyball game. Then Gustav continues his campaign against Professor Brad's assertions that "buildings have gravity  which makes people jumping off of them  pull toward the buildings" and "all the blood is in his stomach."  After Brad's recent use of his bully pulpit at the "Below the Belt" podcast, Gustav couldn't let the issue lie without having a formal public refutation. We would like our loyal upstanding listeners to weigh in on a hot topic of listener emails.  Heavy wonders whether we should just blow through the emails quickly.  Gustav maintains that you the good listeners are kind enough to email us and we should provide thoughtful feedback for your excellent correspondence.  Email us at Canyouhearmepod@gmail.com and let us know if you want your carefully crafted emails read quickly and thrown in the trash or if you want us to continue to converse with you like real friends who value your thoughts and opinions, no matter what Heavy says.
