Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways you can elevate your thought leadership. It can create an emotional connection, convey the need for change, or provide a vision of the future. In this episode, we collect advice from our experts on the various ways a thought leader can utilize the storytelling skill to elevate their content. Adam Zuckerman is Product Leader, Employee Engagement Software at Willis Towers Watson. Adam shares how his personal approach of sharing experiences in storytelling can help connect the research and data you provide with your audience in meaningful ways. Mary Cronin is a Research Professor at the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. She teaches about entrepreneurship, and explains to us how storytelling is a vital component of the success of both thought leaders and startups. At the time of publication, Michelle Mellon was the Thought Leadership Director of SalientMG. She is also a published fiction author. Michelle takes her experience writing stories and applies those same principles to writing thought leadership explaining how the fundamentals of storytelling need to be followed, as well as how they can be broken to create engaging narratives. Our final guest is Christopher Brace, Adjunct Professor of Marketing at MICA. Christopher helps us understand how storytelling can be used in marketing to build brands. He explains how, by employing a listening ear, you can discover the emotional territories of your audience that will help you know what resonates most with them. Three Key Takeaways: * Storytelling is a component of the success of entrepreneurs and thought leaders; yet storytelling is often neglected. * Don't be afraid to provide predictions for the future in your thought leadership. Your speculation doesn't have to be 100% right it just has to provide a glimpse of what could be around the corner. * When starting a narrative look at the questions of “What if” but ensure the basic elements of storytelling are not forgotten.

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Evelyn Starr. Evelyn is an entrepreneur. She started her business when she was pregnant with her second child, and her goal was to be productive outside of the confines of corporate America. Because she and her husband planned their personal finances carefully, they could rely on a single income to cover their expenses. This gave Evelyn freedom to grow her business on her terms and achieve the balance she was seeking. Evelyn is an author, brand expert, and marketing consultant with over 25 years of marketing strategy and research experience. Evelyn uses her keen powers of observation and insight to help her clients wow their customers and grow their businesses. She specializes in working with Brands in Adolescence, brands that have stalled after their initial success. Her clients have ranged from small businesses like Laird Superfood and Harbor Sweets to global brands like Hasbro and Gillette. Evelyn's book, Teenage Wastebrand: How Your Brand Can Stop Struggling and Start Scaling, was published in April 2021. Before founding E. Starr Associates in 1999, Evelyn worked for some of New England's most recognized brands including Dunkin', Veryfine Products and The First Years. As leader of the Care & Safety category at The First Years, she launched one of the company's most successful products, the Hands-Free Gate, which won The National Parenting Seal of Approval in 2002. Evelyn earned an MBA in Marketing from Boston College's Carroll School of Management and graduated with honors from Vassar College with a BA in Economics and French. Massachusetts took a big step towards expending the gambling industry recently when the Senate passed a bill that would legalize sports betting---but there are some huge and potentially irreconcilable differences between the Senate plan and the one the House passed last year. Adam Reilly spoke with Shira Schoenberg, a reporter at Commonwealth magazine, and Father Richard McGowan, S.J., an associate professor of finance at Boston College's Carroll School of Management, about those discrepancies and whether a compromise is likely. Also: campaign finance is taking center stage in two Democratic primaries, as AG candidate Quentin Palfrey calls on his opponents to reject Super PAC spending and Sonia Chang-Díaz urges Maura Healey to return donations from individuals linked to the fossil-fuel industry in the governor's race. The Boston Herald's Sean Phillip Cotter and GBH News's Saraya Wintersmith joined Adam to discuss those calls, former state Senator Dianne Wilkerson readying a run for her old seat, and more.

Matt Lombardi | Cofounder & Co-Owner Matt Lombardi grew up in the greater Boston area, aspiring to one day play for the Boston College hockey team. Lombardi achieved this goal, becoming a standout player contributing to the team's 2008 and 2010 national championship wins. After graduating from the Carroll School of Management with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, Lombardi went on to play professional hockey with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins organizations. Rather than turning away from the industry, this experience inspired Moran and Lombardi to create Beam. Beam offers effective wellness products that harness the benefits of natural, non-toxic nano CBD and other high-quality ingredients, empowering others to push their limits and pursue their passions by improving their physical and mental wellness. On our show today, we're talking to a really special guest that I had an absolutely amazing time talking with. Today we're talking with Matt Lombardi. Matt Lombardi grew up in the greater Boston area and attended Boston College, where he was fortunate enough to play hockey throughout his tenure. As a talented player competing with some of the best teams, Lombardi won the national championship his sophomore and senior year. Lombardi attended the Carroll School of Management, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing in 2010. Lombardi pursued a professional hockey career and went on to play in the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins organizations. Given that hockey is one of the only sports I actually enjoy watching, the fact that he played for the Penguins is preeeetty freaking cool. After a bad concussion his last year playing professional hockey, Lombardi decided to take on a different career path, moving into the tech field. His first job outside of the sports arena was an inbound sales desk at Eaton Vance, and since then has been a serial entrepreneur in the tech space becoming the Co-Founder of a startup called DRIVN Coaching Platform, and most recently CEO & Co-Founder of Grander Inc. Despite the injuries and concussions from his professional hockey career, Lombardi has always had a passion for sports and living an active lifestyle. In 2018, Lombardi was preparing for The Boston Marathon with his long-time friend, another former professional athlete named Kevin Moran. The two trained rigorously to compete while also balancing the stresses of work and life in general. Through their training they felt the effects of old injuries and wondered if there was a way to remedy their ailments with products that lived up to their own wellness standards. It was in this training where Matt and Kevin came together to build a company founded under one common mission: helping high performing athletes AND everyday people live happy, healthy, and whole. That's where BEAM comes in. On today's show, I did a deep dive with Matt on the parallels between high-level athletics and entrepreneurship, building a brand on the foundation of focusing on PEOPLE first, and the routines and habits that help him live happy, healthy, whole, AND keep him moving forward in as a business owner. Talking with Matt truly gave me such hope for the future of companies and of wellness. Seeing how he leads with heart, humility, and health was truly refreshing, and no matter what journey you're on, I know this episode will help inspire you on your own journey to living your own happy, healthy, whole life. Without further ado, let's chat with Matt Lombardi. FOLLOW MATT ON IG BEAM'S IG BEAM ---- Interested in working with EDF Coaching to reach your fitness and lifestyle goals? Click here to inquire! On this episode of Cannabis Business Minds, we hear from Matt Markiewicz about cannabis stocks and insider tips for business owners. Matt brings 22 years of financial industry experience to his current role in running Innovation Shares, the firm behind The Cannabis ETF (NYSE: THCX). Most recently he spent over six years spent at BlackRock as a Director within the iShares ETF business. During his tenure at iShares, the firm launched 150 ETFs in the US supporting a global ETF franchise with AUM that exceeded $1 trillion. Prior positions involved various roles in equity research and institutional sales with VDM Specialists, a NYSE market- making firm, as well as with the global investment bank, UBS Warburg. Matt is a graduate of Boston College’s Wallace E. Carroll School of Management. THCX holdings and portfolios are listed and current every day and weights are updated daily. The fund isn't just plant-touching businesses but also includes ancillary and hemp companies. What we talk about on the show: If cannabis stocks make a worthy investment for investors The breakdown of institutional investors in the cannabis industry The traits investors look for in businesses The advantage of going public for a cannabis business (The costs of maintaining a public company are high) The investment landscape in Canada What businesses should be preparing for during a time of crisis Behind the Scenes Interview What is the best thing that is going on in your career right now? The opportunity to speak with financial advisors in order to educate them about the investment opportunity in the global legal cannabis industry. There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding out there and it feels good to bring some clarity to the cannabis investment landscape. Why are you part of the cannabis industry? It is exciting to be part of something that is emerging from legal and regulatory shadows and be able to promote the industry through a New York Stock Exchange-listed portfolio. What is one entrepreneurial story or experience you'd like to share? When we were going through the registration process of our cannabis ETF, THCX, there was a lack of understanding at the SEC as to what made hemp and marijuana different and why it mattered and how the products were used. It was quite shocking actually. What is one piece of insight you'd like to share with the listeners Not all publicly-traded cannabis companies are created equally so do your homework when investing. What's the biggest challenge you've faced as a business owner that you can share with our audience? Cannabis stocks have crashed since we launched THCX in July 2019. This unfortunate timing has made it very tough to market a fund with a negative performance especially in the face of a stronger broader US stock market. However, financial advisors are still interested in hearing "why cannabis and why now?"

When we travel to a new place, whether for long overdue vacation, a work trip, or simply a day trip someplace we’ve been meaning to check out, many of us rely on review platforms such as TripAdvisor and Yelp to help us plan our visit. In particular, we look for guidance and advice in selecting restaurants, making choices based on how previous visitors have rated their own experience. But how accurate are these reviews really? And adding more ‘food’ for thought, how much of a role does personal bias play when it comes to these reviews, and exactly what factors contribute to that bias? This work matters to the core of my being. -Melissa M. MacDonnell, Founder & President/ Liberty Mutual Foundation You've probably seen the commercial on television a million times for Liberty Mutual (liberty liberty, liberty). But did you know that this Boston based insurance company founded in 1912 also has a philanthropic arm called the Liberty Mutual Foundation? Created by the company's Vice President, Melissa M. MacDonnell in 2003, the Liberty Mutual Foundation has committed approximately 200 million dollars to 1,150 organizations through direct grants, with a focus on accessibility, homelessness and education. And let's not forget the countless contributions made by an employee population of 50,000 people in 900 locations worldwide through a giving and service program called “Liberty Torchbearers”. With a focus on accessibility, youth homelessness and education, the Liberty Mutual Foundation recently funded Liberty House, a 10-bedroom home for homeless youth which opened its doors in Boston just one year ago. What does it take to do this work? That's just one of the many questions we asked Melissa in this up-close and personal interview. She's one of 11 children, who was taught at an early age to always be “genuine, fair-minded and to do the right thing”. A graduate of UMASS Amherst with a Master's in Business Administration from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College and in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School, Melissa is hard-wired to do the work she does. A constant mentor to young women, she is a passionate believer in giving a voice to those who have been silenced. On the wall in her office, Melissa keeps a poem written by her late mother whom she describes as her role model. “The essence of who we are is achieved in the manner in which we live, the lives we make stronger and our love for neighbor as ourselves.” #GivewithLiberty @BWME #storybehindhersuccess #16LifeLessons #mydoveproductions @LibertyMutual

They're longtime friends, and they launched Material in 2018 to bring people together and spark meaningful moments by creating high-quality, thoughtfully designed things for the kitchen. In today’s day and age, being digital is a big buzzword. It’s true, there is an importance to being digital, but there is also a technology fallacy. The people behind the tech are really the ones that can make and break the technology. So, how can you create a happy blend of technology, people, and scaling up? Gerald (Jerry) C. Kane, Ph.D., is a Professor of Information Systems at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He is also the author of The Technology Fallacy: How People are the Real Key to Digital Transformation, where he surveyed over 20,000 executives worldwide and interviewed over 100 executives and thought leaders to determine the key factors associated with digitally mature companies. There is a mistaken belief that a lot of the problems companies are coming across in this modern age are due to a fast-paced technology environment. Often, companies fight this problem with more technological solutions, but the reality is, quality people are the real solution behind this. In the five years of researching The Technology Fallacy, Jerry spoke to countless of leaders in cutting-edge companies like Facebook and Google, some at traditional companies like Walmart and John Hancock, and some at small startups, to get a good range of data. When interviewing the Chief Human Relations Officer at Walmart, she shared that leadership realized they probably would be out of business in 10 years if they didn’t adapt to new changes. When a giant like Walmart realizes they need to adapt or sink in this environment, every company should pay attention. In Jerry’s survey, 90% of employees came back to him saying that they felt they had to update their skill set at least yearly to keep up with the demands of their job, but yet less than half of them said their organization was able to provide these resources. Employees were also 15X more likely to leave their organization within a year if they weren’t getting additional resources to improve their skill sets. This causes a big problem for companies looking to expand and adapt to the marketplace. Keeping and educating talented team members that could grow into new environments was the key to success for companies; not the implementation of new technology. “…What it takes to keep up isn’t as much about coding, AI, algorithms… it’s about being change oriented, it’s about being forward thinking, and it’s about being willing to develop skills in this new world.” --Gerald Kane What allows some organizations and individuals to thrive in new world of rapid technology innovation and disruption while others fall behind or get stuck in obsolescence? Exploring these questions and more is an expert on digital disruption and my guest on the podcast, Gerald Kane, professor of Information Systems at Boston College, Carroll School of Management. After a major six-year study into how digital technologies have disrupted companies of all sizes, Kane talks with me about some of the key findings from his newly released book, “The Technology Fallacy: How People Are The Real Key To Digital Transformation.” Thousands of interviews with employers and employees went into his research, revealing some interesting findings outlined in the book. If your an executive running a company or a CDO or just in charge of digital transformation, listen up. And if you're just an employee who wants to keep pace with change and stay relevant in the workplace, I would listen to this show. On the show we talk about Why adapting to technological disruptions isn’t actually all about the technology - and why thinking it is could lead to failure What type of mindset makes a difference in the companies that succeed at dramatic change vs those that fail to adapt Defining will over skill The similar characteristics companies have that thrive in disruption The importance of culture and what that means really How to stay relevant in the modern workplace The age factor, why succeeding in the digital era is not about age - and what attribute IS important How to develop employees for long-term success through change and tech disruption with examples of how companies are doing that The digital maturity scorecard, what industries lead or lag Jerry was a great interview and not only generous with his findings but passionate about them. Enjoy! I write about all my shows at larryweeks.com
