The Democratic Alliance has dismissed allegations against Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson, labeling them as a smear campaign aimed at undermining his anti-corruption efforts. The DA claims the accusations, by the EFF, are an attempt to discredit Macpherson's work in uncovering an R800-million oxygen tender scandal within the Independent Development Trust (IDT). Earlier today, EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini filed a corruption case against Macpherson at Pretoria Central Police Station. The Minister is accused of pressuring an IDT staff member via email to process a contractor's payment. Meyer also shares the story behind the dismissal of the Supply Chain Management Director after the exposure of R1,1 billion in misconduct relating to the awarding of 29 contracts to one firm. He speaks of the discovery that over 50 former officials still had their cell phones - and how drastic cost-cutting in his own office saved R1.8 million in six months. Meanwhile, the department has brought its debt of almost R800 million owed to contractors down to just over R200 million. Meyer further describes the strides being made in the fight against the Construction Mafia.

South Africa urged to elevate universal electricity access to status of education to fight extreme poverty

Calls are growing for government to overhaul its free basic energy (FBE) scheme amid indications that fewer than a quarter of qualifying indigent households are benefiting from the 50-kWh-a-month currently on offer and with the scale of the grant being described as insufficient to reduce poverty and inequality. Public Affairs Research Institute senior researcher Dr Tracy Ledger argues that, given evidence showing electricity's developmental returns to be as large or larger than any of South Africa's other social welfare interventions, universal access should be elevated to the same level as access to education. "I think we need to start thinking about electricity in the same way that we think about education. "We understand that even though the benefits of education accrue to the individual, overall, the whole of society and the whole of the economy benefits . . . it would be extremely short-sighted of any government to say, 'oh, well, if you're too poor to pay for an education, you can't have one'," Ledger argued during a Presidential Climate Commission dialogue on energy poverty. She also reiterated the call she and co-author Mahlatse Rampedi made in their book Hungry for Electricity for the monthly FBE allocation to be increased to 350 kWh, which they argue to be the minimum threshold at which electricity begins yielding meaningful socioeconomic benefits. "The main reason why grid-connected households cannot access that amount of electricity currently is because of the cost," she explained, indicating that it currently cost a low-income household with a pre-payment metre about R800 to buy R350 kWh. "To put that in context, 55% of South African households have a monthly income of less than R6 000 a month, which means R800 rand a month is nearly 15% of their monthly income." Many poor households are, thus, currently having to choose between electricity and food, which is increasing levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. Compounding matters is the fact that only 25% of indigent households are receiving their FBE allowance, owing to the fact that many municipalities are failing to maintain indigency registers and are using funds specifically provided for FBE under the equitable share elsewhere. The National Treasury's Malijeng Ngqaleni acknowledged the monthly 50 kWh to be inadequate but said increasing the allocation under the current arrangement would not alleviate energy poverty, as its analysis shows that many municipalities are currently diverting the funds away from the intended recipients. A total of R57.6-billion has been set aside for FBE for the current three-year expenditure period to 2025/26, but the National Treasury was concerned that there could be "significant fiscal leakage". Ledger agreed that implementation had to be materially improved before increasing the size of the benefit and also proposed major, albeit controversial, changes to the way the scheme is implemented in future. Eskom, she noted, should be supplying about five-million indigent households, but was supplying only about 800 000 currently, as the utility is reliant on the indigent list being supplied to it by the municipalities. "I think there's a good case to be made for diverting that part of the equitable share that should end up in Eskom anyway, directly to Eskom, and let Eskom register those indigent households." Eskom's Onicah Rantwane reported that the utility was indeed engaging with government on the possibility of ring-fencing the costs allocated for customers in Eskom-supplied areas and having those amounts paid to Eskom directly. However, she argued that there was also an urgent need to restructure the retail tariff to reflect unbundled costs, as changes under way in the electricity sector meant that pro-poor policies, such as the inclining block tariff (IBT), would begin penalising poor consumers over time. "Customers investing in alternative energy sources and energy efficiency are usually relatively affluent. Under the IBT,...

Volvo Car South Africa (SA) has announced the pricing on its newest model – the all-electric EX30 small sports-utility vehicle (SUV) – ahead of its introduction early next year. Pre-orders for the vehicle opened today, June 8. With a starting price of R775 900, the EX30 will be one of South Africa's most affordable electric vehicles (EVs), as very few of these full-size, high-tech cars are available at under R1-million in the local market. The EX30 will also debut as the fastest accelerating Volvo ever, completing the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds in 315 kW twin-motor performance guise. The extended-range version of the single motor (rear-wheel-drive) powertrain, meanwhile, is capable of covering up to 480 km before it requires recharging. “We worked exceptionally hard to set EX30 pricing at what is unquestionably an extremely competitive level, granting South African consumers the opportunity to own a fully electric SUV for the price of a similarly sized internal combustion engine vehicle,” says Volvo Car SA MD Greg Maruszewski. The EX30 is 4 233 mm long, 1 836 mm wide and 1 555 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 650 mm. That means it is only 192 mm shorter from nose to tail than the popular XC40. In South Africa the battery choices will include the high-voltage 51 kWh and 69 kWh units. Three trim levels (Core, Plus and Ultra) will be on offer. Volvo aims for half its global sales volume to comprise of fully electric cars by 2025, with the remainder to take the form of hybrids. By 2030, the Swedish car maker aims for every new vehicle it sells to be completely electric.

Toyota SA to invest R800m-plus in renewable energy, loadshedding a ‘big concern'

Toyota South Africa Motors' (TSAM's) Prospecton production complex in Durban will move to 100% renewable energy by 2028, in an investment that will cost north of R800-million, says president and CEO Andrew Kirby. TSAM will have to carry the cost of the investment, and not its Japanese parent company. Around 10 MW of solar power has already been installed at the plant, with the aim to increase that to 31 MW. To achieve its 100% renewable energy goal, TSAM will also have to roll out low carbon equipment and improve its waste management. Speaking at the vehicle manufacturer's State of the Motor Industry event held in Johannesburg on Thursday, Kirby said the Hino truck plant within the production complex was already “self-sufficient” and running on 100% renewable energy. The group's Atlas warehouse in Gauteng was set to emulate the Hino plant by 2025, with the Sandton head office to get there “much sooner”. The bigger goal was for TSAM to become completely carbon neutral by 2035. “This is an enormous challenge, and we don't have all the answers yet, but we are dedicated to achieving this,” noted Kirby. He added that the 2028 renewable energy target was a “big investment”, and a “big commitment”. “We are doing this for a number of reasons.” One reason was to cut the company's carbon footprint, which was necessary if TSAM wanted to continue to be part of a global supply chain growing increasingly eco-friendly. Another reason was to mitigate the current loadshedding crisis caused by State-owned energy producer Eskom being unable to supply the country with sufficient electricity. Kirby said TSAM had been working closely with the eThekhwini municipality to put agreed mechanisms in place to reduce the Prospecton complex's overall energy consumption when necessary. This had enabled the plant to continue its production day without interruption. However, component suppliers to TSAM had not been that lucky – especially suppliers with high energy demands that could not be met by alternative energy sources, such as furnaces. In these cases, TSAM and the suppliers had been in contact with the relevant municipalities to convince them to sequence their loadshedding periods not too closely together, so that the power outages did not interrupt the production cycle. “For a furnace, for example, it takes two hours to get back up to speed, and then, two hours later, we have loadshedding again,” explained Kirby. “We are working closely with everyone. “To be honest, it's a moving target. “We have come very close to having to curtail our production because of loadshedding, and we think it's going to get worse,” said Kirby. “It's a big concern for us and we are managing it moment by moment.”

Gold mining company Harmony Gold on Tuesday announced a programme to improve the human dimension of safety and productivity by combining cultural transformation with technological advancements. The target of the Safety 300, or S300, programme is to safely lift the output per mining crew from the current average of 260 m2 per crew per month to 300 m2 per crew per month. (Also watch attached Cramer Media video.) Investing in grade is also poised to drive down costs over time, with Harmony's experience in operating in higher inflation environments allowing an 8% cost inflation level for planning amid experiencing a below-inflation 6% rise in fixed wages in its 2022 financial year. As a percentage of South African cash costs, the labour cost has fallen 2%, from 60% to 58% in the 12 months to June 30. To manage higher Eskom electricity tariffs, Harmony has an initial 30 MW solar project under construction in the Free State and a far larger 130 MW renewable energy plant on the way. Mines affected by the higher diesel prices are very much in the minority – Hidden Valley in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and in South Africa, the opencast Kalgold mine and mechanised Target 1 mine. The margins from the large underground Moab and Mponeng mines as well as the surface operations provided a production profit of R9.5-billion. The once-troubled underground Kusasalethu mine returned more than R800-million in free cash, and additional controls at Hidden Valley have reduced the risk of another conveyor belt failure. “In addition to investing in our grade, investing in our people is delivering meaningful returns,” said Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp during the company's dividend-yielding presentation of results for the 12 months to June 30. A final dividend of 22c a share on top of the interim dividend of 40c a share took the total for the financial year to 62c a share. “There is a clear link between execution excellence and productivity. Some of our crews are already mining at 700 m2 per crew per month, so there's a significant opportunity to improve overall productivity. “S300 is humanity at work. It's about developing the human part of our business to achieve the art of the possible,” said Steenkamp. During question time, Nedbank market research head Arnold van Graan requested that the S300 programme be outlined in practical mining terms and asked how the 10% to 15% increase in productivity would be achieved. In response, Harmony COO South Africa Operations Beyers Nel elaborated on the company's detailed plans to optimise output at the rockface, fine-tune shift cycle, and implement appropriate technologies in narrow-reef underground mining environments. “Productivity improvement is identified as a clear aspect of our business that we are looking to improve. In a growth environment, productivity is a fairly cheap improvement if you can realise it,” said Nel. “At the moment, our run rate is about 260 m2 per crew per month and we're looking to improve that to S 300, or 300 m2 per crew monthly. “We've got a well-resourced business improvement platform now going in Harmony in the South Africa exco office,” added Nel, referring to the slide displayed showing facetime optimisation, shift cycle optimisation and the responsible use of technologies. Faster drilling rates are being targeted to increase safe, quality blasts per day. “So it's not rocket science. It's real practical mining stuff, and if you look at our output per crew, although their average is around 260, you've got crews doing 200 and crews doing 700, so it's basically moving that mean to the 300 through well-resourced, well-equipped and safe work. “A crew in good environmental conditions is a productive crew and we're working really hard on the South African operations to grow the business in the South Africa context around productivity improvement and driving the costs down with some higher grades that we're also targeting,” said Nel. Ahead of the planned start of strike action by many employees of Sibanye-Stillwater's South African gold mines at the evening shift on March 9, Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman has remained steadfast, stating that the offer made on February 4 in an attempt to reach agreement on wages was “final”. “Wage increases that are higher than inflation are not sustainable and cannot be considered,” he stated on March 8. Froneman insisted the offer was fair in that it took into consideration current inflationary living costs, and considered the sustainability of the company's South African gold operations and the interests of all stakeholders for the long term. Wage negotiations between the company and workers represented by four unions – the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Uasa and Solidarity, have been ongoing since June last year. Solidarity and Uasa have accepted Sibanye's latest wage offer, but AMCU and the NUM intend to proceed with strike action. “It is very disappointing that the two unions have chosen this course of action despite our ongoing engagement. There are no winners in a strike. Not only would strike action undermine employment and the livelihoods of many people who depend on the South African gold operations, but employees will gain little to nothing from it,” Froneman said. Under the terms of the latest offer, Category 4 to 8 employees would receive an average increase of 6% in the first year, 5.7% in the second year, and then 5.4% in the third year. This would amount to employees receiving an R800 a month pay rise each year, which would include a R100 increase in the living out allowance each year. Sibanye said that, in rand terms, the inflation-linked increases would result in wages for entry-level Category 4 underground production increasing by about R34 397 over the three-year period to an average total guaranteed income of about R245 110 a year. Meanwhile, miners, artisans and officials would receive a flat increase of 5% year-on-year for the three years. “We urge employees to carefully consider the consequences of strike action on them personally and collectively. Strike action will only serve to jeopardise the sustainability of our gold operations and, ultimately, their futures,” Froneman concluded.

In today's podcast episode, we talk to Moloko Makgele, founder of Zest Property Investment Development and a fund manager at Absa for the last 8 years. Moloko has an Accounting degree, post-grad in risk Management and an MBA from Mancosa. He has been an entrepreneur for years and has tried multiple businesses until he decided he needed something that can create a proper stable income, which is how he decided on property. In 2018 he partnered with his cousins to buy their first investment property cash in Polokwane. The property was an old RDP house in a 400-meter yard. The plan was to build rooms on the property.  They didn't do anything with the property for 10 months and he noticed that he was the one taking care of the property. He felt like he was the one pulling everyone so he offered to buy out his cousins for R120, 000.  At about the same time, his father went on pension in early 2019, so he borrowed money from his father to convert the property (in the podcast he shares how to talk about money with your family) and demolished the actual house and built 10 units. In the podcast, he shares the challenges of building a house in a separate province and how he had to change builders 3 times and how it took him 6 - 7 months to build the units, vs the 2 to 3 months he had planned. He finished building the units in March 2020, for R800,000 (US$56,380) and they were fully occupied within a month, renting at R2300 (US$162) per unit. He then bought a second property in Kempton Park, using money he had borrowed from friends after renegotiating the terms of the loan with his dad.  He bought a house, rezoned the house and partitioned it into 11 one-bedroom units, added wifi to the development.  This is such a great episode because we go in-depth on discussing money with family and friends. In today's podcast episode we sit down and chat with Thandeka Sibanyoni, who is originally from Carolina, South Africa.   Thandeka started her property investment journey during the pandemic - she listened to the Property Magicians Podcast and then started following some of the guests and started implementing what they were teaching.   She started looking for properties where she lived and focused on the location of the property, cash flow and affordability. When she went to the bank, she learned that she could qualify for a property worth R700,000 (US$46,023) so she focused on properties priced below.   She found a property valued at R600,000 (US$39,448) and converted that property into a multi-let, with 4 bachelor units. She got 100% funding for that and later found out from the bank that the property was actually worth R800,000, so she actually made R200,000 (US$13,149) when she bought the property.   A few months later, she went to Johannesburg, learned about the AirBnB strategy and started implementing that strategy - she rented a flat, furnished it and put it up on Airbnb and started cash flowing from day 1.   In this podcast, Thandeka shares with us how she was able to start on her real estate journey during a pandemic and keep growing her portfolio.   We hope you enjoy the podcast as much as we did.   Click play to listen to the podcast and leave us a comment in the comments section below.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but tax month is a close second. For buy-and-hold investors like myself, this is the only time of year I get to do anything significant in my portfolio. That's why I take a moment to reflect on my portfolio every February. My tax-free strategy may seem static from the outside, but it has changed as new products have come into the market and as I've matured in my investment philosophy. The market is a highly dynamic environment and even a buy-and-hold strategy requires sharpening every so often. In honour of tax-free savings month, we think through tax-free investment strategies in this week's episode, with the help of a few listener questions. Subscribe to our RSS feed here. Subscribe or rate us in iTunes. Rhona  I am asking on behalf of my daughter (turning 30!) regarding her tax free investments. Are there any recommended changes for 2021 to the high risk etf portfolio. Sonya I am 30 years old and have recently started worrying about my future financially. Until now, I have been using most of my savings to pay off as much as possible into my bond. I have also been contributing to my pension fund.  I've gotten to the point where I can finish paying off my bond in about two years and I have that additional money to put towards my investments. Should I continue to pay extra into my bond and pay it off in my two-year timeframe or rather put more into other investments? Any advice on what to do with that extra money?  I recently opened a TFSA started putting 60% in Ashburton 1200 and 40% into Satrix Top 40. I plan on putting the maximum monthly amount in there but not really sure of what ETFs to invest in.  I then plan on putting the money left over into ETFs but am unsure of which ones - I have thought of adding MSCI Emerging markets or maybe Dividend Aristocrat. Also, is it worth adding bonds into the mix?  Boitomelo I like how Kristia pronounces her name as KRIS-tia while Simon pronounces it as Kris-TIA with emphasis on the last three characters. We use my long-awaited holiday to catch up to some user questions for the next three weeks. We hope you enjoy the shorter episodes as much as I plan on enjoying my break! Suzanne After finding your podcast during hard lockdown, I have been binge listening …..and can honestly say: You have changed my life! Thank you! I have kicked Sanlam and their 5.4% TIC under the arse, and moved my Retirement Annuity to OUTvest.  The buggers charged me a R30,000 exit fee; but thanks to OUTvest's amazing product – within 5 months I made up the loss; ½ coming from my contributions, and ½ from real returns! Following Nerina Visser's fantastic presentation, I am also spreadsheeting everything, but have run into a bit of a snag and hope you can help. As a medical professional, I hold a PPS Policy which includes a sickness- and disability benefit, as well as life cover. Thanks to Stealthy Wealth, I now know that ‘PPS is a mutual society, and doesn't operate like a normal company. They distribute any profit they make back to the policyholders'. These profits are linked to the above policy, and deposited annually into my PPS Profit Share Account. Annually, PPS provides me with a current Rand value, for the value of my PPS Profit Share Account – and I am happy to say it has been growing steadily. On my policy statement it further states that ‘These accounts do not vest until the policy holder reaches 60 years;….and on this date the Profit Share Account can be taken TAX FREE as a cash lump sum'. Can I safely count this Rand value, and the projected growth, towards my retirement planning? And if so, any suggestions on what would be the best (tax efficient) way to do it? Subscribe to our RSS feed here. Subscribe or rate us in iTunes. Brett If you take out a life policy of a R1 000 000 and nominate a beneficiary. -Then SARS assesses you and says you owe them R800 000. -You don't pay the debt due to SARS. -Can SARS nominate the Insurance Agency as a 3rd party in terms of the Tax Administration Act to collect the outstanding debt from the Insurance provider? -In other words whose money is it/The beneficiary or the policyholder. -I have looked into this a bit and it seems that creditors cannot access life policies which would indicate it belongs to the beneficiary and not the policyholder. Kobus I have offshore funds in a Bank account earning nothing at the moment. I am considering  investing this in the Sanlam Glacier Global Life plan and will do this without a FA to save on costs. What other reputable companies in SA offer this service where you can invest directly without the help of an intermediary? Rudolph I have a decision to make that I am a little confused about. I am wondering about the order that I should give preference to. I am currently first trying to max out my RA for the Tax benefit, but keeping myself from accessing the funds till I am 65. Then I try to max out my TFSA and Finally I allocate the remainder of my extra money to my house bond to pay it off quicker. I am not sure if this is the best order to give preference to. Ken We used to contribute to Little Eden and St Bernhards Hospice as part of our monthly tithe. But with our aging parents, and their lack of retirement savings, we are anticipating needing to help them out in the years to come. So we are diverting our tithe savings into a Allan Gray money market account (lowest fees on the market from what I can tell). But I often have a pang of regret when I think that we are no longer supporting these companies that are working so hard to help others. I wonder. if by no longer supporting them, we have resulted in them having to turn somebody away. My idea is a Charity "ETF". like the "top 40" of non profit worthy (researched and vetted) organisations that are helping others. The Charity "ETF" fact sheet will look a little bit different, with links to all of the top 40 organisations websites and a brief description of what they do. I was daydreaming about it popping up as an option when you are submitting a trade on Easy Equities (like the R2 KFC thing). There would be a management fee for whoever was running the "ETF" I suppose, but ideally all of the contributions go directly to the top 40 organisations.  The main thought behind having the Charity "ETF" is that it may seem silly wanting to send, a once off, R100 to one of these organisations. And even sillier to try and split that R100 up into smaller amounts to spread the contribution to multiple companies. But that is what an ETF does best! take a little bit of everybodies money, combines it into one big pot and distributes it to the top 40 organisations. What would really be nice is if Easy Equities could provide you with a section 18A receipt at the end of the financial year as part of all the other tax certificates they provide. Greta Having recently been paid a lump sum (divorce agreement), and needing to live off the yield of my investments for the rest of my life, I have educated myself on personal wealth. I have a pretty sound understanding of my options and how I would like to invest - again based on sound investing principles that you and Simon live by. My question now is a completely practical one: I have the investment pots - one for growth, one for emergencies, one for income. But how do I give myself a monthly income drawdown (I am not a retiree or of retiree age - still 13 years to go).  What investment vehicles are my options to hold my three years of expenses in from which I will draw my monthly income - is it a bank account? Or is there some other investment vehicle I can use to invest my 3-year-expenses money in and get a monthly income drawdown from?  Robin I'm interested to understand how Bonds work as an investment vehicle.  Can you and Simon dive into when and why one should invest in bonds? Should they be SA or Int. Bonds, and which Bonds should one consider?  In the next month, I will have a maturing fixed investment, where I was getting a reasonable 7.58% compounded return. I want to re-invest these funds. However, with the decline in interest rates this year the bank will now only provide 4% compounded return, which doesn't help my cause at all.  I have Tax Free savings in place, I have a Living Annuity that I recently moved from an RA as I can allocate the full investment to offshore equities rather than on 30% as per Reg 28, where the 2.5% compulsory payout of which I re-allocate to my TFS.  I have a diversified SA ETF portfolio (SYGUK; STXNDQ, STXCHN, GLODIV, ETFPLD, ETFGRE, ETFIT, CSPROP, CSP500, STXEMG, STXRES, STXWDM, SYG4IR SYGEU, all in equal allocations) which I am building on (waiting for lower prices to allocate more funds). I also have an offshore Investment portfolio that I actively manage in both Offshore Equities and ETFs.  My goal is to increase growth over the next three years, therefore I have taken an active investment approach. (I am 57 years old and I live abroad, therefore having both an SA and Overseas Investment Portfolios serves me well) Any pearls of wisdom where I can invest the funds that will be freed up next month? Taking all of the above into consideration.

Comair’s business rescue plan has been approved

The proposed business rescue plan for private sector airline group Comair was approved by a decisive majority on Friday. Comair operates the British Airways in South Africa and Kulula low cost carrier brands. The preferred investment consortium for the group is composed of several former members of the Comair board and executive management. This consortium will inject new equity of R500-million into the group and receive 99% of its shareholding in return (after the business rescue plan’s suspensive conditions have been met). Up to 15% of the shareholding will be transferred to an appropriate broad-based black economic empowerment partner within 12 months. However, a further R1.4-billion is needed to relaunch the airline. This will be obtained from lenders, in the form of R600-million in new debt and R800-million in deferred debt (interest will be deferred by six months and capital payments by 12 months). The group will also be delisted from the JSE and a new board established. The relaunch of the airline necessitated the cutting of operating costs and the increasing of ancillary revenues. The workforce will be cut from around 2 200 to some 1 800, by means of early retirement, voluntary retrenchment, and enforced retrenchment (under Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act). The relaunched Comair will retain its relationships with Boeing, British Airways, Discovery Vitality and Slow Lounges. Its aircraft will be returned to service in a phased manner, over a seven month ramp-up process. The plan is to restore the fleet to 25 aircraft, including two Boeing 737 MAXs. Should all go as planned, Comair should exit business rescue by March 31 next year. After that, it should again be a sustainable business. Its fleet should be at full strength by June next year.

Dit is God se Woord. Financial planning isn't just for people who earn money. In single-income households, it's the responsibility of everyone in the household to work towards financial goals. It's also everyone's responsibility to protect those not earning an income. Naturally, dread disease and disability cover and life insurance are critical in these situations. A question from Denzil had us considering the benefits of taking out a retirement annuity in the name of the non-working partner. It means the growth of the investment is tax-free, even though there's no short-term tax benefit. It also means drawdown in retirement will be taxed at a lower rate, as Denzil predicted. As an added benefit, a retirement product protects the assets from creditors and contributes to the financial security of the non-working partner in retirement. As our friends at OUTvest pointed out, it's an employment benefit to partners not earning an income.  Financial independence is certainly within the reach of those in single-income partnerships. It might require more time and careful planning, but it can be done. Subscribe to our RSS feed here. Subscribe or rate us in iTunes. Denzil My wife is a Home Executive and therefore has no income. Are we able to open an RA for her that I can contribute to even though she has no income?  Would it be better for me to contribute the MAX to my RA and get the tax benefit now? Is there any way come retirement age we are able to split my RA funds, be it a Guaranteed Annuity, or Living Annuity etc between my wife and myself to limit the tax implications? Would we be able to pay no tax to SARS on RA withdrawals up to the threshold (based on new 2021 Tables) of R128,650 for the wife once over 65 or R83,100 between 55 and 65?  This would drastically lower the Tax Implications, especially if we add in the R23,800 for interest income. This equates to over R12k per month after 65 and almost R9k per month between 55 & 65 that would be Tax free...This will drastically lower the Tax Implication and therefore amount required to reach financial independence.  We are nowhere near Retirement / FI yet, but i'm just thinking about this now and what Tax implications there will be later on when we do eventually hit the age for retirement or the amount to be FI. Win of the week: Reno I just wanted to share with you how you saved me R162 000. A few months ago I was looking to trade in my old car as it had some mechanical issues. After looking at some cars online I felt that I “deserved” a nice car with a touchscreen and reverse camera with all the nice features, as I had driven a not so lekker car for a while.  I finally settled on a car that I would have financed over 72 months at a cost of R4500 p/m.  Then I was scrolling on YouTube and stumbled upon an interview you did with Tim Modise some years ago. In the interview you were speaking about your money journey and how you got into and out of debt.  That video shook something inside of me.   I decided I do not want to pay a car off over 6 years. When I went to the car dealer I saw the nice car I initially wanted, walked past it and asked if I could have a cheaper car which I financed over 36 months at a cost of R4500 p/m.   After the first few months of driving this car I am very satisfied with it and glad that I did not finance the other car over 6 years. So I have saved R4500 p/m over three years equating to R162 000.   Even though I have financed this cheaper car over 36 months I am paying extra onto it every month to pay it off even sooner. All this came from an interview you did years ago in which you shared your money journey. Thank you for speaking about a topic which no one in my family speaks about. You have changed my perspective on money and debt. Leonora Babies, due to high growth hormones, easily double their weight and increase the number of teeth in no time. Everyone is delighted, but growth slows down eventually. If a mature person (company) doubles in weight, it could potentially be very bad for its health. Better to only pick up weight by working out, flexing those same muscles to make it stronger and more efficient. Radhini I was hoping that you would be able to share some information on the transfers of TFSA accounts. I am trying to transfer my account from FNB to Easy Equities. From my understanding, I can transfer my account with the shares between service providers, or is my understanding incorrect? According to FNB, I first have to sell the shares in my account before I can transfer my account, is this correct? Rudolph I am currently 27 years old I am looking for an ETF that will be suitable for us, maybe high equity and more aggressive since we are young and are looking to invest for the Long term.  Is there any ETF that you guys like that matches my profile?  JJ I've been investing in my TFSA for the last 2 years. I've been buying ETFs in big chunks, mostly the MSCI World ETF.  I wanted to add another R10k onto my current 30k and thought if I buy again now I'll be moving up my average price quite significantly. When do you stop adding on?  If I'm planning on investing in the same ETF for 25 years, does it make sense to keep adding monthly (or however) for 25 years? Surely at some point you have to stop and think that adding monthly will always carry on increasing my average buy price and is slowing down growth. At what point do I just stop and let it grow?  If it was normal trading I would be piling on shares when I think it's right and offloading accordingly, but for a long term investment that doesn't make sense to me. Santosh Thanks to Coronavirus, global markets tanked on a daily basis and are still sinking - which is similar to the global sell-off in Q418 and just shy of 2008 GFC. This was not only in South Africa - but internationally (Local stocks, local stocks that track the USD and hard currency stocks). I'm in all ! On paper, I'm about $40,000 or R600,000 poorer ! Even currency diversification didn't help. The takeout for me, in a financial crisis, I'd rather weather the storm "at home". Wim  I have received dividends into the tax-free account since it does not get re-invested automatically. My question is if I now re-invest the odd R800 in the holding account, my contribution will be an additional R800. I will not be taxed because I exceeded the R2750 a month contribution. Nic The way I understand total return ETFs, the dividends are reinvested back into the ETF, saving on brokerage but the dividend withholding tax still gets deducted. For a tax free account how does this work - there are not two versions of the total ETF, one for tax free and one for non tax free accounts? In my mind it's not worth having total return ETFs in a tax free account - am I missing something. Gregg I currently put my full monthly TFSA allocation of 3000 into my bond. At the end of the tax year I draw out my full allocation of what was R33000 and is now R36000 and pay this lump sum into my TFSA. This way I save mega interest on my bond and the term also reduces. But, my bond is at  9.25% interest (which means by putting extra money in, I am saving 9,25%), whereas I can get 10% interest from TYME bank. So it kinda seems that I save more in TYME, but psychologically I like seeing my bond interest and term come down. Will I really be saving more by putting my R3,000 into TYME bank each month at 10% or is it still more beneficial to put it into my bond because of the  compounding effect of the interest coming down?

Tax is probably the only thing I managed to get right about my finances when I first started working. I had no idea what was going on, but I was sufficiently scared of the government to pay someone else to deal with it. The R800 rebate I got that year might as well have been a million bucks. I didn't understand at the time why I was getting the money, but I was happy to roll with it. If you've never filled out a tax return form, this is the tax year to start. If you're worried that you left it too long and SARS might take your things, pay someone to help you. A small fee paid to a tax professional is worth your peace of mind. Whether you like it or not, tax is much part of your financial planning as inflation and bank fees. You can hate it, but you still have to do it. Spend a little time on it and you'll probably come to enjoy becoming efficient at it. If you'd prefer some guidance, we've heard great things about Tax Tim.              Win of the week: Zakithi from The Fat Wallet Community. Most of the cash for my Sea Harvest allocation has reappeared in my brokerage account, suggesting I got 3.8% allocation. We'll see how it trades as to whether I buy more in open market sell and run. I would like to hold in my second tier portfolio, but only if the numbers work and if it spikes madly on day one I will more likely sell into the spike and wait for things to settle. * I hold ungeared positions. Buying Bitoin (Code: BTC) Started in October 2008 with zero value as the first crypto currency it now trades around US$1,100 and has an ardent fan base. The questions are if it is the future of money? CoinMarketCap lists over 750 crypto currencies with a total market cap of over USD24billion. That said Bitcoin has a market cap of almost US$18billion with Ethereum on a market cap of almost US$4billion (up almost 50% in the last week) leaving very little for the other 750 crypto currencies. But they are very volatile and a commodity rather than a currency, but should we be investing or trading in them? We Get Mail George If people want interest, they want the most interest. My question is simple. Why are there so many options? Govi, Ilbi, or a call account with my bank? Which do I pick and why do I pick it? Stephen If I am looking for somewhere to park cash (i.e. protection of capital and quick access are key), other putting the money in a bank what would be the more suitable options?
