Do you ever feel as if you are simultaneously controlled by your eating habits and that your eating habits are controlled by your emotions? Do you find yourself turning to food when stressed, sad, and overwhelmed, then battling guilt and shame later? We live in an often painful and overwhelming world that, sadly, leads many of us to numerous unhealthy coping mechanisms, those we've perhaps, sought solace in for so long, we fear we'll never be able to experience freedom in these areas. Praise God, that's not true! We can break free from self-destructive tendencies that often only lead to increased anxiety and shame, and in this episode, author and recovered food-addict Barb Raveling shares how.  (Scroll down for discussion/reflective questions.) How often do you cope with difficult emotions or stress through food? If often, can you think about when you first began to use food as a coping mechanism and what contributed to this? How aware of you are your thoughts before you turn to food or while you're eating for emotional reasons?  What are the two most frequent lies (if you're aware of them) that most tend to drive your eating?  Why might it be important to fight our unhelpful coping mechanisms from a thought, rather than behavioral perspective? When you use food to cope, how long does your sense of relief typical last, and what do you feel after? What is one action step God might be asking you to take, having listened to this podcast episode?   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Barb Raveling is an author, mentor, and coach. She is the author of multiple books and bible studies, including James (Transformational Bible Study), The Renewing of the Mind Project: Going to God for Help with Your Habits, Goals and Emotions, and Rally: A Personal Growth Bible Study. In this show, Mike and Barb talk about the importance of renewing your mind, and the importance of truth journaling. Outline of the show: 4:12 -  How does renewing your mind renew a job situation? 10:41 - What is truth journaling, and how do you start doing it? 13:10 - What's the importance of truth journaling? 19:32 - What advice would you give to someone about how to live their faith in their workplace? The List Out Truth Journal The list-out method of truth journaling involves investigating the reasoning behind habits or negative emotions. When you have those thoughts, you write down 3 to 5 beliefs involving those thoughts. When you list these beliefs out, it causes you to think about if those beliefs are true. The Spiritual Opposition of Truth Journaling You have spiritual opposition when you start truth journaling because you're not going to want to do it. Satan doesn't want you to investigate if your thoughts are true. He will lie using partial truths. Sticking to truth journaling will train you to recognize those times where you are facing spiritual opposition. If you're familiar with scripture, you've likely heard the instruction to be transformed by the renewing your mind--an instruction from Romans 12. But how do we renew our minds? What does it look like to renew our minds in the body image arena? Is changing how you think about your body even possible? Today Heather talks with Barb Raveling about all sorts of helpful things in this arena. Barb instructs us how to renew our minds from a macro perspective, and from a micro-perspective. Barb even walks Heather through an exercise of how she would change what she thinks and the action she takes after she feels like she's been overeating and gained weight. Here are a few other things we talk about in relation to changing how you think about your body: How do we stop condemning ourselves for the way our bodies look. What practical habits do we need to change or add so we can be in the regular practice of renewing our minds. How we have to capture our thoughts before we can change them. What do you do when your brain defaults to,  "I'm horrible unless I look like that" mode. Why most people don't really care what we look like (even if we're obsessing over it.) How the "high school cheerleader" scenario may teach us something about our value and our bodies. Asking the question: "Can I believe that what God says about me is what's most important?" How to have weapons prepared to fight before you go in the spiral and once it starts! There's so much good stuff in this episode, you just may want to listen twice. “My hope is that we will be who we say we are. All of us.” — Coach George Raveling Coach George Raveling (@GeorgeRaveling) is an 82-year-old living legend and Nike’s former Director of International Basketball. Coach Raveling was the first African-American head basketball coach in the PAC-8 (now PAC-12). On August 28, 1963, at age 26, while volunteering as security at the March on Washington, Raveling would humbly become the guardian of what we have come to know as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.Coach Raveling has held head coaching positions at Washington State, the University of Iowa, and USC. Following a prolific basketball coaching career, he joined Nike at the request of Phil Knight, where he played an integral role in signing a reluctant Michael Jordan. He’s also been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.Coach George Raveling made his first appearance on the podcast in 2018, and for me, it was one of the most impactful interviews I’ve done, and I came out of it walking on air.We covered a lot of ground in that first interview, including how Coach Raveling came to own the original copy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, how his practice team ended up beating the 1984 US Olympic Dream Team in basketball, how he helped convince Michael Jordan to sign with Nike, and much more. I strongly urge you to listen to that conversation about Coach’s life, philosophies, and lessons learned.I invited George back on the podcast to hear his thoughts on everything that is happening right now. These are difficult and uncertain times for millions of people, and my heart goes out to each and every person navigating the depths of sadness, anger, and fear.As you’ll hear in today’s episode, Coach Raveling has great hope. He’s seen many changes in his lifetime, and we can all strive to be the positive change agents that he implores us to be.Please enjoy this timely—and timeless—conversation with Coach George Raveling. ***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Most people are good at having serious conversations, especially when it’s about race“Real conversations challenge us…difficult conversations make us stand in our own truth and they teach us that we have to be truth tellers. We have to listen to learn.” – George Raveling“I think some of the most important conversations we can have each day are the conversations we have with ourselves” – George RavelingToday, we spend more time talking to a screen than we do face-to-face with ourselves or other human beings“What gives one human being the audacity to think that they have the right to take somebody else’s life?” – George RavelingLife is the greatest gift of all, it’s arrogant for anyone to think they have the right to take someone’s life awayGeorge keeps a sign in his bathroom that reads: Practice self-leadership and self-discipline“And I don’t think that there’s any more relevant or important time to practice those” – George RavelingGeorge was born in a segregated hospital“Dreaming for a black person in those days was a luxury” – George Raveling“You had no dreams, you had no hopes, it was literally all about surviving from day to day”George asks every listener to write down the following pledge:“I will fully commit to being a positive change agent, a positive difference maker, in as many lives as possible”  – George Ravelingeval(ez_write_tag([[728,90],'podcastnotes_org-medrectangle-3','ezslot_0',122,'0','0']));Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org“My hope is that we will be who we say we are. Episode 020—Barb Raveling: Separating Truth from Lies This week on the podcast, I’m chatting with Barb Raveling all the way from Montana. She and her husband have four children. She is a Christian weight loss author, podcaster and coach. Her podcasts are Taste for Truth and Christian Habits. Her books include: Freedom from Emotional Eating, Taste for Truth, I Deserve a Donut, The Renewing of the Mind Project, Rally and her most recent book Freedom from Procrastination.  We visit a lot of topics during our conversation, but the thing Barb is well known for is the concept of truth journaling. She teaches this as well as uses it to help people who want to lose weight renew their mind with truth instead of lies. She began using truth journaling as a way to help her get rid of anger, frustration and annoyance. It is a way to help us see what lies we believe and replace those lies with the truth. “After I was successful with overcoming annoyance,” she said, “I began to use truth journaling to gain control over my weight.  “I found getting rid of annoyance was much easier than gaining control over my weight and food. It became easier, though, when I committed to truth journal every time I broke my food boundaries.” She adds that she also realized she needed lifelong boundaries to maintain her weight. Boundaries will be different for different people, but the important thing is to know your boundaries and stay within them.  “Establish lifelong boundaries and renew your mind every time you break your boundaries,” Barb says. “We eat for fun and comfort, but life should be about God. We should be willing to give up all foods for Him. The more we see life and food from His perspective, the better off we will be.  “Food issues are so hard to get over. Don’t get discouraged. Memorize scriptures. Get good coaching.” To get in touch with Barb go to BarbRaveling.com. Her podcasts are Taste for Truth and Christian Habits. This is a podcast episode I've been wanting to do for a long time. I guess it's appropriate that I finally made the commitment to do it after publishing my new Freedom from Procrastination Bible Study! In the podcast, I'll share my own weight loss journey and how God set me free from the control of food. Overeating and weight gain was an issue in my life from the time I was in high school until I was writing my first book, Freedom from Emotional Eating, in 2006. I published that book in 2008 and at the time I worried I would gain my weight back and be embarrassed that I had written a book on how to gain freedom from Emotional Eating! I didn't realized that I ate for procrastination and whenever I set out to write, I felt like procrastinating! It was disconcerting to be writing on weight loss and feeling like breaking boundaries while writing.  Thankfully, God has kept me on the straight and narrow and I have continued to live free from the control of food. I've found that it's a much more peaceful way to live and -- surprisingly -- a more fun way to live! Overeating may be fun in the moment but eating with control leads to a much more fun life.  It's take me hundreds of truth journal entries to break free from the control of food, but that freedom has been long-lasting. If you'd like to hear more about my journey and how God set me free, listen to today's podcast episode.

If you haven’t heard of George Raveling, you should. This a guy that Michael Jordan addresses as “coach” even though Raveling never coached the Bulls or the Tar Heels. He’s also been retired from coaching for more than two decades. In fact, most people who know him call him Coach Rav, not because he’s got a great sense of the game, but because his wisdom about life. On Coach’s website, there’s a tab titled Life Lessons. It’s full of wonderful lessons. But it’s one post in particular that the aspiring Stoic should consider, because it deals with what Epictetus said is our chief task in life--discerning what’s inside our control and what isn’t and then, having made the distinction, focus all our energy on making the right choices in regards to what’s ours to decide. Rav’s post is titled 23 Life Choices That Are In Your Control. Here are all 23 of them: 1. Be YOU, not them.2. Do more, expect less.3. Be positive, not negative.4. Be the solution, not the problem.5. Be a starter, not a stopper.6. Question more, believe less.7. Be a somebody, never a nobody.8. Love more, hate less.9. Give more, take less.10. See more, look less.11. Save more, spend less.12. Listen more, talk less.13. Walk more, sit less.14. Read more, watch less.15. Build more, destroy less.16. Praise more, criticize less.17. Clean more, dirty less.18. Live more, do not just exist.19. Be the answer, not the question.20. Be a lover, not a hater.21. Be a painkiller, not a pain giver.22. Think more, react less.23. Be more uncommon, less common. And now that we have been given 23 choices that are up to us, let’s start making them.
