Gost Igor ŠKERBOT, svetovalec spec. za poljedelstvo, vrtnarstvo in okrasne rastline na Kmetijsko gozdarskem zavodu Celje je spregovoril o izzivih, o katerih so govorili na minulem Zelenjadarskem posvetu, na katerem so med drugim podelili tudi priznanja za najboljše kislo zelje in kislo repo. Zato je svetoval tudi o pravilnem postopku kisanja, ki privede do odličnih rezultatov.

Avgusta smo bili priča raciji na antifašističnem taboru na Peršmanovi domačiji, ki velja za simbol narodnoosvobodilnega boja na avstrijskem Koroškem. To seveda ni edini primer pritiska na slovensko manjšino, a je dejanje, ki spominja na temne čase, v katerih so bili koroški Slovenci tarče raznarodovalnih teženj. Slovenska manjšina na avstrijskem Koroškem ima namreč dolgo zgodovino boja za lastni obstoj, ki sega najmanj do začetka 19. stoletja, ko je na tem območju živelo več kot 130 tisoč Slovencev. Večinska kultura v deželi Koroški je bila nemška, pripadniki nemške etnične skupnosti pa so manjšino razumeli kot nevarnost, kar je prispevalo k porastu sovražnosti. Položaj slovenske manjšine na avstrijskem Koroškem so nam predstavili dr. Božo Repe z Oddelka za zgodovino na Filozofski fakulteti Univerze v Ljubljani, dr. Teodor Domej, slovenski zgodovinar na avstrijskem Koroškem, in dr. Marjan Linasi, muzejski svetnik v Koroškem pokrajinskem muzeju. Zaradi teh pritiskov in ekonomske ter politične nemoči so se koroški Slovenci znašli v zelo kritičnem položaju. Dogodki, kot so na primer koroški plebiscit, priključitev Avstrije k Nemčiji in porast nacizma, so skupnost močno prizadeli. Tudi sistem, ki ni spoštoval pravic manjšin ali je celo aktivno spodbujal asimilacijo slovenskega prebivalstva, je prispeval k hudemu krčenju skupnosti. Kompleksno dogajanje so nam pomagali bolje razumeti gosti tokratnih Sledi časa: dr. Božo Repe z Oddelka za zgodovino na Filozofski fakulteti v Ljubljani, dr. Toda ob tem, ko praznujemo obletnico konca ene velike vojne, se hkrati pripravljamo na naslednjo. Močno so se zamajali tako svetovna družbena ureditev kot prizadevanja za mir. Vse te strahote so prinesle tudi streznitev in spoznanje, da je vsekakor treba preprečiti ponovitev česa podobnega. Toda ob tem, ko praznujemo obletnico konca ene velike vojne, se hkrati pripravljamo na naslednjo. Močno so se zamajali tako svetovna družbena ureditev kot prizadevanja za mir. Zakaj je bil odnos slovenske duhovščine do okupatorjev in odporniškega gibanja med drugo svetovno vojno tako različen v različnih predelih slovenskega etničnega ozemlja Uveljavljena zgodba o dogajanju med drugo svetovno vojno na Slovenskem gre nekako takole: narod, ki je bil v tistem času nedvomno večinsko katoliški, se je hitro v velikem delu postavil na stran ideološko mešanega odporniškega gibanja, ki so ga v pomembni meri organizirali komunisti, krščanski socialisti in levi sokoli, katoliška cerkev pa je ne le simpatizirala z okupatorjem, ampak kmalu začela spodbujati tudi oboroževanje enot, ki so nastopile proti partizanskemu odporu, v katerem je sicer res vedno močnejšo vlogo prevzemala komunistična partija. In vendar ta mnogokrat povedana zgodba, ko pogledamo celotno slovensko duhovščino po vseh delih slovenskega etničnega ozemlja, nikakor ni več tako enoznačna. V tokratnih Sledeh časa bomo skušali zarisati veliko bolj kompleksno sliko odnosa slovenske duhovščine do okupatorja in Osvobodilne fronte ter se spomnili tudi tistih, včasih pozabljenih duhovnikov, ki v nasprotju z odločitvijo vodstva ljubljanske škofije niso nastopili proti partizanskemu odporu, ampak so ga bolj ali manj aktivno podpirali ali pa vsaj ostajali nevtralni in skušali preprečiti bratomorni spopad. Pri tem nam bodo pomagali teolog in pisatelj Peter Kovačič Peršin ter zgodovinarja, dr. Božo Repe z Oddelka za zgodovino Ljubljanske filozofske fakultete in dr. El Gamergate va començar aparentment com una disputa sobre l'ètica en el periodisme de videojocs, però aviat es va destapar com una campanya massiva d'assetjament contra dones, persones LGTBIQ+ i veus progressistes dins la indústria dels videojocs. Aquest episodi d'Això no és Veritat explora com aquell conflicte es va convertir en un dels punts d'inflexió que van preparar el terreny per a l'onada ultra-conservadora i reaccionària que vivim actualment. Analitzem els orígens del Gamergate, els actors principals, les narratives que es van utilitzar i com aquesta batalla cultural va ajudar a consolidar moviments d'extrema dreta en espais digitals, amb connexions directes a fenòmens com el trumpisme, el creixement del masclisme organitzat i els atacs sistemàtics contra la llibertat d'expressió i els drets socials. In this paper, we are trying to control model behaviors. For example, by asking saying "You hear someone making fun of a topic you're passionate about", we can control an LLM to behave in an angrier manner. We can also control "any" behaviors of an LLM by simply defining a one-liner of description. The teaser below shows the scope of our method -- SelfControl. TL;DR: We propose a novel framework, Self-Control, to control LLMs' behaviors. By appending suffix strings, e.g. "Is the above response helpful? Please answer Yes or No" to self-judge and optimizing the corresponding suffix score, we obtain the suffix gradients w.r.t the model hidden states and directly modify the states to control model behaviors on-the-fly. We then compress the gradients into a Prefix Controller, to enable controlling for any behavior target without additional cost. Our experiments demonstrate its efficacy and the exploratory study hints some potential mechanistic interpretability using suffix gradients. The first part is a training-free method and the second part is a parameter-efficient module. The idea of the first part is straight-forward -- we wanted to control model behaviors through representation/activation engineering[1], but in a different way from the RepE paper. We thought gradients may be more flexible and provide more possibilities. Thus we tried appending some strings and then obtain the gradients using the so called "suffix score", which is free from the need to collect an annotated dataset. We call them "suffix gradients". This by the way picked up the topic of "self-improve/self-judgment", which has garnered much interests. Based on this idea, we built up an iterative framework: 1) We need to define the control direction by selecting suffix string and target (step 2 in the figure); 2) branch the first token and sample the response with the highest suffix score at each iteration (step 1/4 in the figure), and 2) obtaining gradients based on that response, find a proper step-size for the gradients, and then control the model (add them to the hidden states at the positions of input tokens, step 3 in the figure). Step 3 and 4 form the iteration loop. The optimization objective is thus to maximize the suffix score shown below: where H_{input} is the input hidden states with the suffix gradients. Specifically, we use the original (uncontrolled) model for suffix score evaluation. We were also interested in compressing these found gradients into another module. It is similar to the idea of LoRRA in the RepE paper[2] and a parallel work, whereas we were more interested in learning a prefix. By gathering suffix gradients obtained from the first part, we trained a Prefix Controller by minimizing the mean squared error between the hidden states (latent representations) from the corresponding layers. To ensure the quality of training data (suffix gradients), we filtered them by their norms and the suffix score of the output when control with that gradients. Below are some of the results. SelfControl achieves good performances on various tasks. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How well do truth probes generalise?, published by mishajw on February 25, 2024 on LessWrong. Representation engineering (RepEng) has emerged as a promising research avenue for model interpretability and control. Recent papers have proposed methods for discovering truth in models with unlabeled data, guiding generation by modifying representations, and building LLM lie detectors. RepEng asks the question: If we treat representations as the central unit, how much power do we have over a model's behaviour? Most techniques use linear probes to monitor and control representations. An important question is whether the probes generalise. If we train a probe on the truths and lies about the locations of cities, will it generalise to truths and lies about Amazon review sentiment? This report focuses on truth due to its relevance to safety, and to help narrow the work. Generalisation is important. Humans typically have one generalised notion of "truth", and it would be enormously convenient if language models also had just one[1]. This would result in extremely robust model insights: every time the model "lies", this is reflected in its "truth vector", so we could detect intentional lies perfectly, and perhaps even steer away from them. We find that truth probes generalise surprisingly well, with the 36% of methodologies recovering >80% of the accuracy on out-of-distribution datasets compared with training directly on the datasets. The best probe recovers 92% accuracy. Thanks to Hoagy Cunningham for feedback and advice. Thanks to LISA for hosting me while I did a lot of this work. Code is available at mishajw/repeng, along with steps for reproducing datasets and plots. Methods We run all experiments on Llama-2-13b-chat, for parity with the source papers. Each probe is trained on 400 questions, and evaluated on 2000 different questions, although numbers may be lower for smaller datasets. What makes a probe? A probe is created using a training dataset, a probe algorithm, and a layer. We pass the training dataset through the model, extracting activations[2] just after a given layer. We then run some statistics over the activations, where the exact technique can vary significantly - this is the probe algorithm - and this creates a linear probe. Probe algorithms and datasets are listed below. A probe allows us to take the activations, and produce a scalar value where larger values represent "truth" and smaller values represent "lies". The probe is always linear. It's defined by a vector (v), and we use it by calculating the dot-product against the activations (a): vTa. In most cases, we can avoid picking a threshold to distinguish between truth and lies (see appendix for details). We always take the activations from the last token position in the prompt. For the majority of the datasets, the factuality of the text is only revealed at the last token, for example if saying true/false or A/B/C/D. For this report, we've replicated the probing algorithm and datasets from three papers: Discovering Latent Knowledge in Language Models Without Supervision (DLK). Representation Engineering: A Top-Down Approach to AI Transparency (RepE). The Geometry of Truth: Emergent Linear Structure in Large Language Model Representations of True/False Datasets (GoT). We also borrow a lot of terminology from Eliciting Latent Knowledge from Quirky Language Models (QLM), which offers another great comparison between probe algorithms. Probe algorithms The DLK, RepE, GoT, and QLM papers describe eight probe algorithms. For each algorithm, we can ask whether it's supervised and whether it uses grouped data. Supervised algorithms use the true/false labels to discover probes. This should allow better performance when truth isn't salient in the activations. Drew Pearson, Managing Partner at Pearson Partners, began his commercial real estate career at Latter & Blum in Baton Rouge in 2008. He moved to a boutique firm named Waters & Pettit in 2011 and within a few years became a top-selling agent there. To date he has sold over $100MM dollars of investment property in more than 15 states. In 2015, he began to work at the real estate private equity firm Promanas in Ann Arbor, MI. There he served as head of acquisitions helping the firm to grow to over $250MM of real estate asset value. He considers his time at Promanas instrumental in his growth and development process.
