In this episode, we continue our celebration of the National Marine Sanctuaries' 50 Years of ocean conservation and stewardship. Our guest today on the Outdoor Adventure Series is Ed Lyman.Ed is a Natural Resource Specialist, and Regional Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator at the NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine SanctuaryHe works closely with NOAA Fisheries under their Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program and many other partners. For more than 25 years, Ed has worked with NOAA, state agencies, and others to understand the animals better and to address the threats that impact them, especially ship strikes and entanglements. Ed leads the sanctuary's long-term health and risk assessment program that monitors the risks to and health of humpback whales within the sanctuary and nearby waters. He has participated in over 120 disentanglement efforts and helped free more than 70 large whales – more than 40 with the sanctuary.Aha MomentThe value of the "team" or "network " towards the response. Freeing a large whale of entangling gear is very challenging and can be dangerous. Having a group of people you can rely on for support, safety, and helping cut the whale free, makes a big difference. It is one of those "ahas" that has grown over the years, including the sanctuary Ohana, state and federal partner agencies, the community, and the core response teams I work with. Insight2GoThe ultimate goal of our overall large whale entanglement response efforts is garnering information so we can reduce the broad-based threat of entanglement. We have been doing this for decades (it was an aha moment a while back), but for me, I would like to put more emphasis on it as part of our "entanglement response efforts," and I think the information we have been garnering now represents a large enough dataset to accomplish such a task. Using my doctor analogy, perhaps we cure disease instead of treating it.  Perhaps a future aha moment. To learn more about the NOAA Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary https://hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov/You can also follow the sanctuary on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hawaiihumpbackwhaleNext Steps To learn more about large whale entanglement response and what you can do if you come across an entangled large whale, here are links for various regions representing a first responder training course. The course will only take 20 minutes or so and will provide the roles/ steps for the best way to help the animal and stay safe. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts:  https://east-coast-training.whaledisentanglement.org/#/West Coast: https://west-coast-training.whaledisentanglement.org/#/Alaska:  https://alaska-training.whaledisentanglement.org/#/Hawaii:  https://pacific-islands-training.whaledisentanglement.org/#/Click here to learn more about the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. The Outdoor Adventure Series is a podcast production of Fox Coaching, Inc.

Students today face a barrage of stressors that impact every corner of their lives, from academic and social stress to family dynamics and personal trauma. The added layers of non-inclusive school environments, along with the unique challenges of immigrant and first-generation students, only contribute to students' stress and anxiety. In their new book, Education Across Borders, educators and co-authors Patrick Sylvain, Jalene Tamerat, and Marie Lily Cerat contended that the practices and values in the U.S. educational system contribute to stress and put many children and families at a disadvantage — in particular, those with diversity in language, culture, and socioeconomic status. With a focus on Haitian and Dominican students in the U.S., the authors drew on their experiences to address racial inequities in the classroom and shared strategies that can create an inclusive classroom environment. Together, they explored how language policies and social justice intersect, how educators can use culturally-relevant teaching to enrich curriculum, and how teachers can support the needs of immigrant and first-generation students in the classroom. Patrick Sylvain is a Haitian-American writer, essayist and poet, and instructor of Haitian language and culture at Brown University's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He has been published in several anthologies, magazines, and reviews, including African American Review, Agni, American Poetry Review, Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, Haitian Times, and Ploughshares. Jalene Tamerat is a leader in K–12 education whose work focuses on the preparation of teachers who are able to respond to the instructional and civic needs of diverse urban youth. She began her career in education in 2003 as a classroom teacher in the Boston Public Schools and has most recently served as the dean of a Boston-area residency and master's program for aspiring teachers. Marie Lily Cerat is Associate Director of the CUNY Haitian Studies Institute at Brooklyn College and teaches with Africana Studies Department. Prior to her career in higher education, Dr. Cerat served as a Bilingual Haitian Creole educator with the New York City Department of Education and a Resource Specialist with the Haitian Bilingual/ESL Technical Assistance Center (HABETAC) of the New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education. She is the co-founder of Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, which was established in 1992 to provide ESL and adult literacy instruction to Haitian immigrants and refugees. Danielle McKoy is a passionate activist in the national prison reform and racial school integration movements, as well as a lifelong educator. From battling homelessness to excelling at Princeton University, she leverages her exceptional personal story and expertise in advocacy, writing, and leadership development to lead equity movements on a local, national, and global scale. She is a cofounder of New York City's inaugural Alliance for School Integration & Desegregation. Replacing the missing pieces of the puzzle. Simone and her team of volunteers do not just help with a specific emergency and then leave. They do so much more by helping these women get out of emergency mode. Even having them make a vision board. “I'm going to help you with this emergency. However, we're going to get you stabilized because you can't continue to be in the same predicament that you are in. Where do you see yourself? Do you need job placement? Do you need job training? Or do you want to go to school? Maybe you need babysitting services? Do you want a car? Would you like to open a business? So I just tried to dream with them.” “So I make them think the same way these women had me think and I get them to stability and that's where the testimony comes; ‘Yes, she changed my life and made me think out the box.’ I'm not saying these women are rich, but they're stabilized. They have jobs. They’re in school. They're eating healthy, their children are healthy. They're housed.” Soon it will be Thanksgiving and assisting women in need. This week's episode is so right for this time of year. A common misconception among drug and alcohol addiction is that abusers typically live in poor or lower-middle-class neighborhoods. Part of the reason is that people tend to associate drug and alcohol addiction with financial stress, lack of treatment resources and insufficient education on substance abuse. However, recent studies have shown this is not the case. The addiction statistics actually increase among higher-income neighborhoods, although many don’t want to acknowledge it as an epidemic happening right in their own neighborhoods. In July of 2017, a group of 30 community leaders in Hudson, OH joined forces to tackle the opioid epidemic head-on and answer these difficult questions. Led by leaders of the Hudson Community Foundation and members of Hudson Community First, the group formed a new organization called Drug Safe Hudson to bring about community awareness. Drug Safe Hudson exists to improve opportunities for citizens living in Hudson, OH that are battling addiction. For this week’s podcast, Greg met with Jamie Messenger, the Resource Specialist for Drug Safe Hudson and community advocate who specializes in combating the alcohol and drug epidemic. Hear how these organizations are providing resources for victims and support for families that have been affected by the crisis.
