Sunita Sah: Defy Sunita Sah is an award-winning professor at Cornell University and an expert in organizational psychology, leading groundbreaking research on influence, authority, compliance, and defiance. A trained physician, her research and analyses have been widely published in leading academic journals and media entities including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Harvard Business Review, and Scientific American. She is the author of Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes*. We often think of defiance as a snap judgement. Yet, it's so much more nuanced and purposeful than it often appears. In this conversation, Sunita and I explore the common patterns of defiance and how we can all do a better job of standing up for ourselves. Key Points We follow bad advice – even when we know it is obviously bad – to avoid appearing unhelpful. Defiance means acting in accordance with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise. True defiance is not a snap judgement; it's a process. Acts of defiance are preceded by many moments of conscious compliance, when defiance is deferred. Five stages of defiance often emerge: (1) Tension, (2) Acknowledgement (to ourselves), (3) Escalation (vocalize to others), (4) Threat of non-compliance, and (5) Act of defiance. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and grant yourself the same grace and compassion that you give others. Self-criticism is easy when you hold yourself to impossible standards all the time. You are a work in progress. Keep this in mind when you make mistakes. ANTS: Automatic Negative Thoughts about a Situation (I'm stupid, I suck, I'm terrible, etc.) PETS: Positive Empowering Thoughts in a Situation (I'm allowed to make mistakes, it's ok, I'm learning something from this, etc.) Physically beating yourself up is absurd, so why do we think it is ok to beat ourselves up in our thoughts? Overthinking is latent protection mechanism from when we had to learn from negative events in order to stay alive. Try compartmentalizing your worrying by allowing yourself to do it within a small period of time, like 5 minutes. Then, move on. Enlist a team at home when you have too much to do, to help alleviate overthinking the to-do list. Focus on what you have control over, rather than the feelings of overwhelm. Take steps to move in the direction that will make you feel better. Vocalizing what you are thinking can help to ease your mental burden. Find a friend to vent to, or write it down. Do not overestimate the value of self-care. The better you take care of yourself, the better you will be able to process and take on the day's challenges, which means less overthinking. Plan for the worst-case scenario. Being prepared will make you feel less anxious. Always be learning from your failures, as well as your successes. I can tell you for sure more people feel concerned rather than excited to visit the doctor. Some patients get anxious if not terrified of medical offices. All that being said, there are simple tips which can help you approach your doctor with confidence; no liquid courage required.Just like how we can be vulnerable during intimacy, discussing sensitive items with the doctor, to no one's surprise, makes for a lot of apprehension and worry. In the exam room, there are a zillion things you don't want to hear from the doctor that can stress you out. To name a few big ones, you might be worried about what you'll be diagnosed with, if you need to be pricked with a needle, or if you need to go through a challenging treatment plan. For many patients, hearing bad medical news or having an awful experience at the clinic tilts their opinion of healthcare professionals drastically. From my own experience seeing physicians and also helping patients at my clinic, I believe the worst thing patients can feel is the doctor criticizing them for having a bad medical situation in the first place. Although I'm glad this doesn't happen at my own workplace, other providers who victimize patients create unreal anxiety. Unfortunately, some doctors like that do exist. However, let me say one thing before you curl into a ball or stick your head in the sand: just like in entrepreneurship and other parts of life, it's a bigger risk to do nothing about discussing your health for the sake of dignity rather than be a little open about your well-being. As a little kid growing up with asthma, I used to keep my mouth shut when my doctor would ask me if I had that issue because I felt that if I didn't reveal my weakness or worries about my weakness, I could make myself feel better. As a result I didn't comply with the care I needed back then and things were much harder than necessary. I've learned it's actually better to manage your fears rather than manhandle them. That's why, right now, we'll cover straightforward tips on mitigating worries from seeing the doctor. I'll also link helpful resources from Mt. Sinai's and the Nemours' children's health systems that give a little more detail on ways for patients to deal with medical anxiety. You'll find these links, among others, on my post at rushinagalla.substack.com.If nothing else, you should know that you're not the only person on planet earth who fears the doctor. Just because you see other people on Instagram or Snapchat living their seemingly perfect lives doesn't mean they're unafraid of needles or tough medical news. Everyone deals with their own struggle behind the scenes. A clear sign of medical anxiety no matter what your background is happens when you're constantly rescheduling appointments better than procrastinating your regular work. Before even going to the clinic, acknowledging out loud that you are worried about the medical visit is the first step to self-compassion in having a better experience with a doctor. Voice to another family member or yourself that you're having this nervousness. Just like how you should have your visit goals in mind before reaching the clinic as we talked about in previous episodes, you can briefly rehearse the sensitive topics you're planning to cover. You could also hand your doctor some pre-written notes to go over so you don't need to bring up sensitive issues from scratch.Taking either of these steps keeps you from holding all the emotions and history so tight that you forget how to talk with another human being let alone your doctor. Here's another thing to consider from the professional's side of the exam table: good physicians are trained to discuss hard and uncomfortable matters besides solving health issues, while having more incentives to help you rather than judge you. If you close yourself up like a clam, the doctor would find it hard to get the additional bits of medical and social detail he or she needs to make the best treatment plan. Imagine your doctor totally missing something important like a smoking habit, rapid change in weight, or a new medication you take because you were too worried to say anything.Vocalizing your worries ahead of time lets you summon a little bravery in the exam room to open up the conversation more. The next couple tools we have to deal with medical anxiety, funny enough, come from how we navigate our children's healthcare experiences. Adolescents have their fair share of emotional and physical changes making them nervous at the clinic, but medical anxiety tips for teens and young ones can also make sense for adults. Along those lines, a nice way handle medical office fear is to bring a trusted friend or family member with you to the visit for moral support. It also doesn't hurt to ask the medical office ahead of time if you should expect any tests or procedures at the visit. If you know what's coming and have someone by your side, your medical care, among other parts of your life, changes for the better. All of that should be no surprise, but nervousness has a way of making us forget what we need to remember. Building trust with your doctors is critical for anyone but when you're young, that is a golden opportunity to be open with medical professionals, which then sets you up for better care in the future. The bottom line here is expressing that you want to take charge of your care while admitting your nervousness. That is music to the doctor's ears because the conversation then gets personalized for addressing your needs and worries. Even though it's better to do these things when you have your first medical visit experiences as a little human, it's never too late for owning up to your healthcare as a bigger human.Now you should be well-armed to handle anxieties at the clinic that are within your control. On another note, you might be walking out of the office feeling good about your treatment plan so far, but then you notice that your medications have a limited supply and the instructions are written in that classic doctor and pharmacy gibberish, pushing your stress levels back up again. Episode 319 - When I was stressed out at work or stressed by a social situation, alcohol would fix it temporarily, until it didn’t.  Now I’m accepting moods, feelings and phases come and go and it’s all okay.   Korie took her last drink on March 21, 2019. We look forward to seeing more of you on our page.  Instagram:  @recovery elevator.   Finding Your Better You – Odette’s weekly message   Rediscovering your life beyond recovery.  You are all unique.  We are more than a drinking problem; we are more than recovery.  The life we now enjoy would disappear if we returned to drinking.  It is easy to feel  uniqueness –submerged in recovery.  In sobriety we don’t know when things will get better, but they do.  Sobriety is a piece of your whole life.  We all have the opportunity to learn and re-learn who we are.    Maintenance is important to secure your sobriety.  If you stay the course, you get to graduate.   You always focus on maintaining sobriety, but it’s not all day every day, it becomes a piece of your broader life.  There are so many benefits to being present in sobriety – you can have your cake and eat it too.   [8:12] Odette introduces Korie   Korie said her last drink was 3/21/19.  She grew up in Austin, Texas and is 32 years old.  Korie was abroad and lived in Japan and Singapore and came to the US when she was 6 years old.  She is engaged and just bought a home outside of Austin.  Pre-quarantine, Korie was a social butterfly.  Now, she stays home more than she used to and loves getting outside, running, reading, drawing and anything artsy.   [11:46]  Tell us about your history with drinking.   Korie doesn’t remember her first drink of alcohol.  She would have a sip or two of her Mom’s wine and thought it was disgusting.  In high school she was in a few programs that required her to sign a contract saying she wouldn’t drink or party.  She followed the rules.  In college she remembers drinking, getting dizzy, self-control was gone, and she didn’t want it to stop because she liked the feeling.  She didn’t drink often.    She worked in the restaurant industry which breeds lots of drinking.  It felt normal, until it didn’t.  When she graduated from college, she moved to Spain to become an Au Pair and drank a lot there.  She remembers staying out all night, being hung over and thinking she may have a problem and her drinking wasn’t normal.   The nightlife continued when she returned to the US.  She remembers getting drunk, getting sick and making bad decisions?   [15:13]  What thoughts were you having about your drinking?   Korie felt pretty justified because she judged her drinking based on what other people were doing.  She knew it wasn’t who she wanted to be   It started to feel not right.  When she left the restaurant industry, she recognized it wasn’t normal to drink every night.  She had a broader circle of friends to compare herself to.  She was working as a virtual concierge and was calling in to work, saying she was working from home, but just too hungover to go in.  She realized she was still drinking like she had in her twenties.  She never wants to experience an emotional rock bottom again.    [18:46] Did you ever talk to anyone about your drinking?   Korie said a former boyfriend spoke to her about her drinking.  She got defensive and thought he was a bit paranoid.  Looking back, she realizes he was right to be concerned.  At 24, Korie verbalized concerns to her best friend, but kept drinking.  She started asking questions to people who went to AA.    [20:48]  Did you ever attempt moderation?   Korie took a few weeks off of drinking before she stopped altogether.  On March 21 she had three glasses of wine and realized she couldn’t stop.  She knew the urge was so great and knew she was powerless over the urge.  She stopped then and that was it, she was done.   [22:40]  Have you asked yourself why you drank or why it was so hard to stop?   Korie said it was a variety of things, but the feeling of not belonging and trying to numb that feeling was at the top of the list.  Toward the latter part of her drinking, she began to feel less than when comparing herself to her friends and alcohol helped … until it didn’t.  Korie’s self-esteem has substantially improved since she quit drinking.  Her skin is clearer, she feels healthier, happier and she isn’t so self-conscious anymore.   When Korie was stressed out at work or stressed by a social situation, alcohol would fix it temporarily, until it didn’t.  Now she is accepting moods, feelings and phases come and go and it’s all okay.  Korie works hard at being accepting of others.    [30:17]  How did things change for you after you quit drinking?   Korie said she felt different, it was black and white, and she knew she couldn’t drink anymore.  She listened to several podcasts, read some blogs  and followed sober people on Instagram.  She decided to check out an AA meeting near her home and it was all women.  It was exactly what she needed at the time and she appreciated everyone’s honesty.  Nobody glossed over their emotions.  In addition, she started going to Sans Bar which is an alcohol-free bar.  She was scared, but met the owner, Chris Marshall, and felt welcomed.  She was very connected with the sober community in Austin until Covid hit.  Now podcasts and connecting with friends keep her sober.   [35:26]  What do you do when you get a craving?  What tools work for you?   Korie doesn’t get cravings often and has learned she is usually hungry when she gets a craving.  She eats and drinks water.  When it’s an emotional craving, she turns off her technology, goes for a walk or connects with friends.  Vocalizing the craving gives it less power and the cravings pass within 20 minutes.     [36:36]  How did your family and friends react to your new lifestyle?   Korie told her best friend who was supportive and didn’t make a big fuss.  Their friendship became closer.  Some of her friends were surprised and asked why she quit drinking, but she never heard anything negative.  Her friends make sure to have AF beverages.  Her parents have been very supportive, particularly her Dad.  Her mom respects her choice but doesn’t completely understand it.  Dating after sobriety was a challenge.  Several dates ended quickly.  Her fiancé is supportive and asks lots of questions; he is a great partner.   [40:02]  Did you experience fear of missing out (FOMO)?   Korie said absolutely, but within a few weeks she would hang out at Sans Bar.  She went out, drank soda water with lime, and loved that at midnight she went home, instead of to the next bar.  Post quarantine, she has no FOMO at all.   [41:45] Has your sleep improved?   Korie said she slept through the night immediately and she stopped grinding her teeth.  Her dog interrupts her sleep occasionally, but her sleep is dramatically improved.   [42:25]  What do you say when people offer you a drink?   She says no, thanks.  Early on she said, I don’t drink – as a way to be accountable.  Now she just asks for a Coke or a Topo Chico.  Most people don’t bat an eye.    [43:04] What is your favorite AF beverage?   Coffee with almond creamer – iced or hot.  She also loves sparkling water.   [43:33] Do you have any triggers?   Korie said work stress is her biggest trigger, particularly at the end of the day.  She takes a step back and practices calming the trigger or craving.  During the summer when it’s hot, or after a run, she often craves alcohol.   [45:34]  Rapid Fire Round   What are you excited about right now?   Korie is excited to talk to Odette and get her story out there.  She is hoping to help others and excited about getting her two-year chip.   What books are you reading?   Korie is reading the John Adams biography and she loves American history.  She also reads the Bible regularly.   What is a lightbulb moment for you in this journey?   I am ok just the way I am and people like me when I’m not drinking.   What is your favorite ice cream flavor?   Moose tracks.  It can be found in the Northwest.  It’s chocolate fudge, peanut butter cups and chocolate chips in vanilla ice cream.   What piece of guidance would you give listeners who are considering ditching the booze? Boundaries begin when we become aware of being around and attracting other peoples energy, literally and metaphorically. In any relationship, intimate or not, how we choose to navigate and communicate effectively is built on a foundation of honoring ourselves and our own inner shadow work. Vocalizing ourselves and understanding what we need first and our wants and desires will help us fill our cups in order to fill other people. Oftentimes, we have been silenced or our boundaries have been crossed, creating a hostile and toxic environment, even around those we love. In this episode, Cierra talks about ways to alter our perspective towards those around us by seeing them for an individual human, detached from the relationship or connection we've created. By releasing the expectations we hold towards labeling someone or something in our lives, we create space for understanding and healing, respectively on both ends. Why do we do this? Vocalizing, especially when it’s imperfect, is joyous. The more perfect you try to make it, the less you may get to enjoy it. Joanna Lott is a Speech Pathologist at the University of Virginia Voice & Swallowing Clinic. She does voice therapy, voice evaluations and voice treatment. If you are a heavy voice user in your vocation, have an injury, or are going in for a preventative appointment, Joanna will see you at the same time as laryngologist Dr. James Daniero (our episode 4 guest) and help you chart a treatment plan. What we love about Joanna is that she is a singer who has been a part of the New York City audition scene and has a personal understanding of the investment it takes to come back from vocal injury. In this episode, we will talk about what brought her to this work, how gendered beliefs of the voice can lead to vocal fatigue, how shaming beliefs about your voice can affect your relationship to your voice, and the power of a practitioner who understands the voice journey from the inside out.

Subscribe to the Emerging Women podcast on iTunes. Transcript: Chantal Pierrat: OK, welcome back, Neha! Neha Sangwan: Oh, it’s so good to be here again. CP: Now, you are visiting your parents right now. What state are you in? NS: New York. CP: You’re in New York, OK. Are you on Long Island? NS: Oh no, I’m in Buffalo. I live right outside New York in Williamsburg, but my parents live in Buffalo. So the whole family’s out. CP: So this is a perfect opportunity to practice a little TalkRx. NS: [Laughs] Family is always the perfect opportunity to practice communication skills. CP: And you have—you said it’s your parents’ wedding anniversary? NS: Yes, their 50th. CP: OK, all right. Now’s the time. [Laughs] NS: That is so true. CP: Well, in our first part 1, we talked about your five-step process, which I think you call the i-Five? NS: Yes, the i-Five conversation. CP: The i-Five conversation. Maybe we should just quickly summarize the five parts, just for the listeners that might be coming in for the first time, even on part 2. And then we can dig into the part 2 of our podcast. NS: Sure. The whole premise of the i-Five is that it’s five steps to having not just conversations, but honest conversations. And I think that’s where people get a little stuck. So I’ve broken it down into five parts, and the first part is your body. Basically, how our senses help us pick up information from the external world while we are simultaneously getting information from our internal world, like our heart racing, [our] stomach turning, all of that stuff that also is giving us information. And sometimes those two things are not in sync, right? So I’m saying “yes” but my stomach’s dropping. So that’s the body section, which is, how do you take in data from the outside world and inside world and have it sync up, and when it doesn’t, what do you do? That data takes us to the second part of the i-Five conversation, which is your thoughts. So if I am in room and I’m talking to you, and my eyes tell me that you just get up and leave in the middle of a conversation, that’s data that I would pick up. I’ll make up a thought about it. I’ll decide that it means you’re not feeling well. I’ll decide that it means you don’t like me. I’ll decide all sorts of things. So the second step is around the thoughts we make up once we’ve observed the data from our body. And then, depending on which thought I believe—if I think that you’re not feeling well, it leads me to step three, which is an emotion. So if I think you’re not feeling well, I might feel an emotion of concern or worry for you, for your health, how you’re feeling. Now, if the thought I made up was that I don’t think you like me or thought that our conversation was very interesting,
