Rob breaks down a detailed CSU San Marcos study which characterized upper extremity muscle activation generated by surfers while paddling. The study describes which muscle groups are firing, and their duration, magnitude and timing of activation throughout the stroke at different speeds. The team at CSUSM also measured oxygen consumption, paddling cadence, and surfboard motion. The results of the study provide further evidence towards what efficient and effective paddling is, which muscles to train for different paddling speeds, the intensities at which to train for each scenario, and provides a stepping stone for similar research in the future. Come nerd out with Rob and learn if you are activating the correct muscles at the correct time during your paddling! Miguel de Jesus' mission is to help companies achieve their breakthrough goals, dreams, and aspirations. Learn how he does it in this riveting interview. Miguel de Jesus believes we can do, be and have anything we want if we check our egos at the door and just ask for help. Miguel is an E.I.R. (Executive in Residence) at the CSUSM/College of Business Administration, and in that role, he is a great connector - between students, businesses, and their futures. Miguel understands that busy business owners often lack the time and resources for focusing on growth, while students might have more available time but lack any real-world business connections. By connecting them in The Senior Experience Program, he's able to link the right students with the right businesses and together they can be transformed, and the projects help everyone grow. We are BACK for Season 2 of Librarians Anonymous! After summer hiatus, we are ready to return with stories and discussions from the behind the scenes world of librarianship starting with the tough topic of "vocational awe." Here to talk to us this week is "BiblioBurro," a librarian and instructor who is deeply invested in solving the problem of vocational awe with individual solutions like "slow librarianship," and trauma informed services, and systemic advocacy like collective action and accountability. Tune in for a fantastic conversation! The featured library that Jeeves & Wooster want to draw your attention to this month is the CSUSM's "Brew-chive" in San Diego: https://archives.csusm.edu/brewchive/ This month's quote: "Vocational awe is f*cking toxic and we as librarians need to stop spreading this rhetoric that libraries are this beacon of democracy and critical thinking. Libraries are just buildings. It is the people who do the work. And we need to treat these people well. You can't eat on passion. You can't pay rent on passion. It is not a sustainable source of income, and we need to stop treating vocational awe as the only way to be a librarian." -Fobazi Ettarh

One of the focuses of the Chamber has been providing our local business owners with valuable resources to pivot during the pandemic. And providing our members with the platform to get the word out to other business owners about tools and strategies that can help inform critical decisions. The topic of Business Innovation continues to remain a relevant topic because the framework and mindset is applicable at every stage of a business' lifecycle. For this reason, this episode is longer than our usual 15-20 minute episodes. In this episode:We'll be learning from Sam about how to use the business model canvas to evaluate how we create value for our customers and sell value to our customersHe'll be going over the value in identifying what the process is that we go through as a business to create value propositions and deliver those value propositions to our customersYou'll get clear on what the difference are between cost and price, customers and users, as well as hear about examples of how real businesses are utilizing different models and framework to attract customers, cut costs, and are disrupting their industries As always, you can find all of our episode links in the show notes - located in the episode description as well as on our website at sanmarcoschamber.com/business-model.
In this week's episode the team talks about tackling school from home, pop culture tv shows, and awkward Zoom moments.
It all began over 20 years ago when Dos Desperados founder, Steve Munson (@dosdesperadosbrew) got the brewing bug. His first brew was a Mexican style ale and was such a hit at his backyard cookouts that he could no longer keep up the demand brewing in his family home. That is when Steve decided it was time to turn his favorite hobby into a business. In 2014 Dos Desperados was born. Dos Desperados or "the Rebel in all of us" perfectly represents Steve's adventurous brews– Habeerneros IPA, double Dealer Brown Ale and Homicidal Manic Stout– just to name a few.Steve passed on his head honcho hat to Hayden Weir, a CSUSM grad, in 2018. Hayden is now Dos Desperados Head Brewer and is whipping up delicious beers like his famous New England-style IPA named Hazy Daisy (after his golden retriever pup, Daisy). And it's a family affair! On any day of the week you will find one of the Munson family members serving up these delicious suds. So saddle up and come try a beer (or two) at San Marcos' very own drinking hole.
