We are joined by G'Ra and Rihanna from the band Baby Got Back Talk. Forming in 2017, the band have been making catchy, pop punk songs and have attracted a large following. We discuss the band's formation and how they ended up on Wiretap Records. G'Ra recently wrote a piece for the Boston Globe 'A rollicking rebuke to the idea that rock music isn't black music'. This was a pushback against recent comments from Rolling Stone cofounder, Jann Wenner.  Baby Got Back Talk have put together a mixtape full of artists demonstrating that Wenner's argument that woman and people of colour 'didn't articulate at that level' within rock music is nonsense.  The band will also be releasing a new song and video which will accompany the article and mixtape. Keep an eye out for this soon. In the mean time, check out the most recent EP from the band 'Wince, Repeat', available everywhere. 0 mins In this episode Rudy, Jaime, Taylor, Evee and I welcome back Hiram from Los Angeles. Hiram starts by giving us a little geography lesson about Los Angeles.  We then dig into the Super Bowl between the Chiefs and Eagles. The girls add nothing to this conversation.  So we jump into the halftime show by Rhiana and we have mixed signals about the performance. We then talk about the upcoming movie Cocaine Bear based on a true story.  Kevin Durant get traded to the Suns which is a little overshadowed by the NFL like always. We hadn't talked NBA for a minute which is no surprise.  Jaime finds a way to sneak in some Cowboys talk with a story about Michael Irvin at a Marriott.    14:00 minBBQ time!! We talk about our Super Bowl Smoking on the Rio Cookoff.   On Friday night we cooked some fajitas for some friends and gave some guys some Joe Tips on how best to cook them. Then luckily Jaime and I score some VIP tickets to Midland.  Jaime gives us a breakdown of the concert and some controversial comments made by the band about valley women.  We then get into the barbecue talk and how our food turned out.  Evee and Taylor tell us what else there was for the non-cooks at the event.  We somehow get into goal yoga.  We then talk about the results and some how pull off a 6th place chicken out of 215 teams.  Not other calls but we'll take it!!33:00 min We circle back to the Super Bowl and talk about how we watched the game this year.  Hiram starts by telling about his day but first tells us he spent one in Hawaii once.  Turkey Chili is the highlight of his LA party with a side of mountain backed potatoes. We had a lazy plan where we buy a bunch of apps and I have Evee and Taylor cook the food today.  We had wings, quesadillas, cheese sticks, pepperoni rolls and chips and dip. Jaime had some brisket and potato salad at his friend Mike's house.  Hiram wants to know what our expectations are at a Super Bowl party.  42:00 minWe wrap it up by talking about driverless cars and how everyone feels about robots driving our cars and planes.  Apparently robots are taking over the world and we just have to suck it up.  A bunch of joes that cook like pros!!!Smokin on the Rio Home - Smokin' on the Rio - State Championship BBQ Cookoff (smokinontherio.com)Law Office of Hector Hernandezhttp://hhernandezlaw.com/?fbclid=IwAR3kaG_wQzrsUJ-cVxJLUyjvipMPM1R59xo9YMKFFsiGHaaUgdZ8hd8cB7YWebsite/Shop https://www.readysetbbq.com/Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/readysetbbq

I ask the gang if they'd rather stay in or go out on that weekend.  I ask if a friend's valentine's hangout is cool or lame.  I ask the girls about the ideal Valentine's setting and if a BBQ joint is an appropriate venue.  We talk about Valentine's gifts and if guys should be getting gifts.  We go throwback as I ask everyone what their childhood celebrity crush was growing up.  Some interesting celebs from the Ready Set BBQ Podcast.  40:00 minHirma gets a chance to redeem the Behind the Red Carpet segment as we continue to talk about movies and snubs. How the Green New Deal Changed the Conversation (with Rhiana Gunn-Wright)

How to Save a Country

Few have done more to change the climate paradigm than Rhiana Gunn-Wright. As an architect of the Green New Deal, Rhiana was instrumental in expanding the limits of climate policy, and telling a story far larger—and more inspiring—than curbing carbon emissions by taxing them.  The Green New Deal's vision: affirmative investment in green industries, decarbonization as an engine of economic growth, and racial equity and job creation at the center of the national project. “They wanted a World War II style economic mobilization that would cut emissions in 10 years, create millions of jobs, and…reduce the racial wealth gap. And so my job was basically to figure out how you could do that,” Rhiana tells Felicia and Michael. Now director of climate policy at the Roosevelt Institute, Rhiana sees the legacy of that vision in today's politics. Environmental justice is now an essential part of the narrative; and industrial policy, which she has championed for years, is becoming mainstream. “Back in 2019 when I was doing all these interviews, not a day went by where people didn't ask me, ‘Well, why should equity be part of this? Why should racial justice be part of discussions about climate or decarbonization?'” Rhiana recalls. “And now you can't actually have a conversation about climate without mentioning equity and justice and environmental justice.” Rhiana also talks with Felicia and Michael about why she thinks the Inflation Reduction Act is a mixed bag, why industrial policy must include transforming our approach to child care and elder care, and how to change people's understanding of where wealth comes from by telling a story of public investment and inclusion. She attended UC San Diego for medical school, UC San Francisco- Eastbay for general surgery residency, and did a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. Since 2016 she has been an attending of breast and general surgery in Boise, ID. Rhiana volunteers at a monthly surgical clinic at a local safety-net medical clinic, she is involved in the health education for homeless and refugee women and girls, and volunteers as a surgeon with the Tiba foundation (Tibafoundation.org), focusing on empowerment for women and girls throughout their lives at our hospital in rural Kenya. She has a wonderful husband and two amazing boys who fill her life with joy.  Wow!! As soon as I heard about this very young surgeon, I knew she would be so inspiring to women everywhere. Rhiana is changing the world, and we are honored to be able to share her incredible journey with you all.  ------------------------ Be sure to follow us on... Natasha says not enough black people are talking about climate change, so she tapped in the co-writer of the unnecessarily controversial Green New Deal, Yale grad, Rhodes Scholar & Director of Climate Policy at the Roosevelt Institute, Rhiana Gunn Wright, to talk about ALL the things. Climate Change affects systemic racism, our health, our rent, cancer possibilities based on where we live - basically our everyday lives, and it's not just about cow farts.  There's a reason certain folks don't care about making the environment more livable - because climate change disproportionately negatively affects people of color.  Rhiana and Natasha talk a little Real Housewives, a little Green New Deal drama, why allergies & asthma won't let us LIVE, why we deserve checks from a climate stimulus and they give the blueprint to everything you need to know about climate policy. Our guest is Rhiana Gunn-Wright, who is writing policy and leading the Green New Deal project at New Consensus, which is one of the main think tanks working on the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal is one of the most important pieces of policy being worked on right now, and it could have wide sweeping effects that impact not just our generation but the future for everyone. Conversations around environmental topics tend to get real political real fast, but Rhiana reminds us that this isn’t a political issue – this is not a political game and millions of people will die. If you’re asked to picture an environmentalist or climate activist, what do you see? Is it a white guy with a beard who wears a Patagonia fleece and rides his bike to work? Whether you agree with the policy or not, one of the benefits of the Green New Deal lies in the fact that it ‘builds a bigger tent.’ By addressing the twin pressures of climate change and income inequality, the proposed legislation opens the conversation about climate to a wider audience—one that includes everyone from the rural population in traditionally red states to people living on the south side of Chicago. Rhiana Gunn-Wright is the Policy Director at New Consensus and one of the architects behind the Green New Deal. Before New Consensus, Rhiana was the Policy Director for Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign in Michigan. She has also worked as the policy analyst for the Detroit Health Department and served as a policy intern for former First Lady Michelle Obama. Rhiana earned her BA in African American and Women’s Studies at Yale and her master’s in Comparative Social Policy from Oxford. Today, Rhiana joins Ross, Christophe, and Ramez to share a high-level overview of the Green New Deal, explaining how it leverages an economic mobilization framework to tackle climate change and income inequality. She describes how public response to the bill has surprised her, discussing the criticisms she finds useful and some of the writers offering constructive analysis. For our first full episode back with Season 2, we talk with Agustina Vidal and Rhiana Anthony of The Icarus Project about everything mental health: why mental health is stigmatized in the first place, how it interplays with systems of oppression, suicide, ableism, medication, hospitalization, and more.   The Icarus Project is a support network and education project by and for people who experience the world in ways that are often diagnosed as mental illness. We advance social justice by fostering mutual aid practices that reconnect healing and collective liberation. We transform ourselves through transforming the world around us. http://www.theicarusproject.net Agustina Vidal has been part of The Icarus Project Community since 2006, and is currently the program Director. She has a masters degree in mental health counseling, and her focus is the development of new tools and resources for both the U.S. and Latin America. Rhiana Anthony (she, they, boo) is a queer black girl magician working toward collective liberation through community organizing, soulful facilitation, and healing justice. Her roots run from the Third Coast of Houston, TX and the Piney Woods of Marshall, TX. Rhiana currently works as the Icarus Project webinar coordinator and facilitator, founder/consultant of Conjure Community Healing Arts, and trainer for The Isaiah Young Institute. ----------- PRACTICE: Next week, join Agustina and Rhiana for their practice episodes where they teach us how to make our own Mad Map - a plan to support our own mental health. #56: What’s It Feel Like To Be Asked To Save the World?

In Episode 56, Quinn & Brian ask: What’s it feel like to be asked to save the world? Our guest is Rhiana Gunn-Wright, who is writing policy and leading the Green New Deal project at New Consensus, which is one of the main think tanks working on the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal is one of the most important pieces of policy being worked on right now, and it could have wide sweeping effects that impact not just our generation but the future for everyone. Conversations around environmental topics tend to get real political real fast, but Rhiana reminds us that this isn’t a political issue – this is not a political game and millions of people will die. Sorry, no joke there, just a stark reality that too many people are happily ignoring. Since its debut last year, the Green New Deal has created quite a stir in Washington. Some have praised it as the most ambitious national project since Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, while others have dismissed it as a green dream. Earlier this week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) partnered to introduce a preview of this bold new effort to address both economic inequality and climate change. In this episode of Columbia Energy Exchange, host Jason Bordoff is joined by one of the architects of the Green New Deal, Rhiana Gunn-Wright. Rhiana is the Policy Director for New Consensus, the progressive policy shop advancing the deal. She breaks down the thinking behind this sweeping plan, which calls for 100% clean energy as well as affordable housing and high-quality healthcare. They discuss the speed, scale and scope of the Green New Deal, and the collective spirit driving the new policy.
