Why did God give us art? Academic and author of over a dozen books, Terry Glaspey refers to himself not as a doctor or teacher, but as a student. Earning his doctorate in Spiritual Formation, Glaspey studies the Word of God and individuals who truthfully and artfully present God. It was when reading C.S. Lewis that Glaspey had a vibrant awakening. Riveted by Lewis' practical yet creative understanding of God, Glaspey noted a strong parallel. Jesus expressed truth through parables; C.S. Lewis did the same in books like The Chronicles of Narnia. Glaspey calls them “Truth Bombs”: Art, music, or narrative that presents truth in a fresh, memorable way, probing even the soul. God's call on Glaspey's life is to introduce people to great writers, artists, and musicians so that they may see the Master. For in His hands, art is a tool that penetrates hearts with mysteries from heaven, transforming us with the passion of the Creator. All views, information, and opinions expressed during this podcast are solely those of the individuals involved and do not necessarily represent those of Family Enterprise Canada. Description Host Steve Legler speaks with David York, author of The Gift of Lift and Entrusted, about the concept of stewardship and how it applies to enterprising families. York also shares his three questions that every rising generation family member needs to have answered, along with his views on the continuum that runs from entitlement to enslavement. Guest bio David R. York David R. York is an Attorney, Certified Public Accountant, and Managing Partner with the Salt Lake City law firm of York Howell. David practices law in the areas of estate planning, tax, business planning, and non-profit entities. He is a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and is the Dean of Legacy with the Purposeful Planning Institute. David has extensive experience in designing and implementing advanced wealth planning strategies for high-net-worth clients. He is the co-author of three books, Entrusted: Building a Legacy That Lasts, Riveted: 44 Values that Change the World, which after its release was the #1 Business Ethics book on Amazon, and The Gift of Lift. You can learn more about David R. York on his website and LinkedIn. Key Takeaways [:26] Steve Legler welcomes David R. York to the podcast and asks him to talk a little bit about the subtitle of his latest book: Harnessing the Power of Stewardship to Elevate the World. [4:21] David played “slug bug” as a kid, he makes a parallel with looking for and finding examples of stewardship in the world. [5:50] Though we use and hear the word a lot, stewardship is rarely defined. David offers the working definition he came up with in his book as well as the opposite of stewardship: consumerism. [8:36] Transcendence and investment characterize stewards, David talks about the ill-perceived trait of entitlement and shares his experience in a five-generation vineyard in Verona. [11:49] Stewards have a unique perspective on the relationship with the past, present, and future. David shares the four key building blocks of stewards. [13:55] David dives into the notions of equality of opportunity and cost versus value. He also touches on the four Ps: purpose, preparation, perspective, and participation. [18:35] The insidious problem of snowplow parenting and the problem of perceived entitlement. [20:11] The three critical questions David poses to help families surmount the biggest issues surrounding wealth transfer. [25:16] Entrusted is right in the middle between entitlement and enslavement; Steve and David break down how to keep the balance through rights and responsibilities. [29:04] David's reading recommendations and his advice for advisors. [32:12] Steve thanks David R. York for joining the podcast and sharing so much of his learnings, and signs off until next month. Down the rabbit hole we go
Davis came up with the idea of reinforcing the stress points of garments with rivets after the wife of a woodcutter asked if he could make a pair of durable trousers for her husband, and approached Strauss with a business proposal whereby Strauss would finance the paperwork and the two men would share the ...
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is proceeding with plans to build a new headquarters which would be twice the size of the The Pentagon, the world's largest office building. The new FBI headquarters is to be built on one of three sites in suburban Virginia and Maryland. Those sites are large parcels of 58, 61, and 80 acres. The Kremlin in Moscow —a walled fortress containing the administrative offices of the Russian central government, the official presidential residence, massive auditoriums, an arsenal, a museum, four palaces, three cathedrals and several churches—is just over 66 acres in area. Vatican City in Rome, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, is tucked into 110 acres. The FBI is proceeding with its plans at a time when Americans have grown increasingly alarmed about the mission creep of an institution we once regarded as the world's greatest law-enforcement agency. After the 9/11 attacks, the Bureau's mission changed to become an intelligence operation rather than a law enforcement agency. Case management has been centralized in its headquarters in Washington DC rather than as before in the field offices around the country. It did this to place so-called operational decisions in the hand of what they've called “politically sensitive” individuals at headquarters. What this means in practice it that the political biases of FBI leadership, and some of its investigators, have come to influence the conduct and public perception of the agency's most consequential investigations. Joining me to talk about the planned building, the FBI's history and what it's become today, is my frequent guest and astute observer of US intelligence agencies, Mike Waller. J. Michael Waller, is a Senior Analyst for Strategy at the Center for Security Policy where he concentrates on propaganda, political warfare, psychological warfare, and subversion. Mike's author of a soon to be published book about the CIA and the FBI. The FBI hasn't revealed a reason or strategy for its colossal new HQ but we do know this according to the GSA specs: “Riveted into its new project are woke regulations to ensure that the FBI center will comply with diversity, equity, LGBTQ+, and climate change political goals,” explains Mike. The site, design, and structure of the new FBI headquarters must “advance racial equity and support for underserved communities through the Federal Government,” as part of Joe Biden's Executive Order 13985 calling for “an ambitious whole-of-government equity agenda.” But the problem with today's FBI runs deeper. “After 9/11 the FBI has been stuck in this netherworld of being a law enforcement agency and an intelligence agency, and you can't combine those with the same people in the same organization or you get political police.” Is this what we want from our FBI? There is a lot packed into this episode about a woke and politicized FBI. Mike explains how we got here - from the 1920s to today - and it's a fascinating, and disturbing, story.

In this episode we talk with June Gervais, an author who makes her home on Long Island and who, as we learned in talking with her after the episode, was familiar with Kites and Strings and had listened to a number of episodes prior to our having any contact. It also turns out before we were turned onto June, she was mentored by our S2 E22 guest and author, Alice Mattison, and after numerous pieces of her work being published in countless publications, June has recently released her debut novel, Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair. Catherine and I both heap high praise on the book, but before we finished our respective reading, we sat down with June for this episode. In short, this episode was a Joy! We had such a good time talking with June and learned so much about her avid reading as a child, her start as a writer and her process, and what was so fun in this episode were the exchanges and comparisons we had around writing and providing therapy. Get a copy of her book and turn the pages, or listen on whatever platform you use, but rest assured you will love the story and the characters. In 1947, slavery was commonly thought of as a Southern thing, and futhermore, a thing of the past. Then, Alfred and Elizabeth Ingalls were arrested in Coronado. The couple, in their 60s, had recently moved from Boston and were charged with keeping their Black maid, Dora Jones, in involuntary servitude. Writer John Wilkens discusses the story with editors Kristina Davis, Lora Cicalo and Jeff Light. “Advancing Through or In ADVERSITY” ~ Philippians 1:12-26 THEME of Chapter : Christ OUR Life…….Verse 21 “For To Me , to LIVE is CHRIST To DIE is Gain” Four Qualities of AUTHENTIC Christian Faith: Adversity means to ADVANCE Rivalry causes Rejoicing TESTING Produces Triumph DEATH Unveils Delight PHIL.1:12-14(NKJV) ADVERSITY MEANS TO ADVANCE: 12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance (ADVANCE)of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole [a]palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. ITIM 4:12-15 12 Let no one [a]despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, [b]in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to [c]14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. II Chron. 20:20,21 20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: PROSPER = saleah (SAH…LAYACH)…To advance ,prosper, make progress, push forward breakout WENT out BEFORE =yasaw (YAT-Saw) …To Proceed, move forward in front 2:2 2 but having both suffered before, and having been injuriously treated (as ye have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the good news of God in much conflict, PROVERBS 28:1 The righteous ARE BOLD as a Lion PHIL. 1:15-18(NKJ) RIVALRY CAUSES REJOICING: 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. I Cor. 3:1-7 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. Acts 8:12-17 Philip, James , & John work together in Samaria to further the Gospel ROMANS 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 5:15-26 Fruits of the FLESH devour…Fruits of The Spirit bring LIFE!! James 3:14-16 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. I Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. “I Want The Biggest TENT!” 4:2 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Hebrews 10:24 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds Can you take the success of others? That's one of the hardest tests of Christian maturity, isn't it? I don't think there is a clearer mark of Christian maturity than to be able to genuinely rejoice -- not just say pious words -- but genuinely rejoice in the success of another(THE LADDERJ) PHIL. 1:19-20 Testing Produces TRIUMPH 19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance(salvation) through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. “THIS” Refers to the fact that Christ is being EVEN MORE WIDELY PROCLAIMED due to Paul's imprisonment “Deliverance/Salvation” (SO..TERIA) not referring here to phys. Salvation…but more of a connotation of health & well being( 9:21,22) …This WORD means deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation (Phys. Or spiritually)…the context decides meaning BEAUTIFUL TRUTH HERE = The know. That Paul's Imprisonment was actually advancing the Gospel Message was like a TONIC to Paul's soul = HIS SALVATION, brought well- being to Him!!,instead of discouragement PRAYER!! Not possible w/o Prayer! 20..”EARNEST EXPECTATION”—( apokaradokia…Apo…kara…dakia)literally ‘away the head to watch' = to look to watch…to crane & out stretch ones Head LOOKING for something in Eager expectation!:-)(see ROMANS 8:19)….AN INTENSE FOCUS…Not looking anywhere else RIVETED on something…in this context, next phrase defines what Paul is focused on…w/ His whole HEART/Being “In nothing I Shall Be ashamed…BUT w/ALL BOLDNESS”….This literally means ‘The TOTAL Freedom of Speech”…..as He was in House arrest He could have given in to Fear of Govt.( Roman Empire)in Retaliation for His Preaching …shrunk back & failed in His Mission as The Gentile Apostle …He wanted to Maintain His Bold Testimony as shown throughout His missionary career NOTE it was Paul's INTENSE DESIRE (Earnest Expectation) to Magnify God IN /W HIS WHOLE HEART/BEING, not just His words, even if He had to lay down his life as a martyr……….see…. Christ will be magnified in my body…MAGNIFY…Literally to MAKE GREAT, Conspicuous..to GET Glory & Praise! I Cor. 4:5-12 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. 6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you. 23:10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. I Peter 1:6,7 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been [a]grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, PHIL. 1:21-26 “Death Unveils Delight” 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I [a]cannot tell. 23 [b]For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again. with Christ, which is far better. = A Christians VIEW of DEATH HOWEVER…… For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain =Paul's VIEW…He was content even overjoyed either way!...he was not ‘pining' for heaven…what about us!?, are we living such a LIFE, fully content, fulfilled, walking out God's plan daily (In EXCITEMENT! )& yet READY & Desirous of HEAVEN!? 3:4when the Christ -- our life -- may be manifested, then also we with him shall be manifested in glory. ACTS 17:28 For In HIM we LIVE & Move & Have our Being! “To Die” more literally, to Have died… this is showing that the state of death will usher in The Glorious heavenly realm I COR.5:1-8 For we know that if our earthly [a]house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our [b]habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as [c]a guarantee. 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. CONCLUSION: What do you think is really living? What kind of circumstance do you have to have before you can say "Oh, now I'm really living"? What do you substitute for "Christ" in these words of Paul? "To me to live is money"? Then to die is to lose it all, isn't it? "To me to live is fame"? To die is a name in the obituary in the paper and never have it there again. "To me to live is pleasure"? To die is to go out into an unknown. "To me to live is health"? To die is to lose my health. You see the only thing that makes sense in life is to say with the Apostle, "for me to live is Christ," because then you can say "to die is gain." The truth about the Christian faith is that heaven begins down here. 1:3 Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who did bless us in every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 2:6; For he raised us from the dead along with Christ, and we are seated with him in the heavenly realms—all because we are one with Christ Jesus. Adversity First, let's look at the meaning of ADVERSITY, and allow that to saturate our minds and hearts. In Hebrew, the word is “ra,” and has these following connotations: affliction, calamity, distress, hurt, evil, sorrow, trouble, being mistreated. Adversity is not only physical duress, but is often accompanied by a heavy mental and ---------------------------------------------------------emotional state of being as well. The word “ra” comes from a root word meaning to spoil harm, break, or grind into pieces that are good for nothing--worthless!...........see Job 1& 2 Ecclesiastes 7:13-14 Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what He hath made crooked? In the day of prosperity enjoy the good, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath also set the one beside the other, to the end that man should find out nothing {of what shall be} after him. (Darby trs.) Psalm 51:17 DAVID pleaded with God to have a BROKEN Spirit, and a BROKEN and CONTRITE Heart. In the Hebrew language, both BROKEN and CONTRITE in their root forms mean to be shattered and ground up into pieces beyond recognition. This shows then that David had accepted the “Gift of Adversity” that God had set before him. Amazingly this takes us back to the basic root meaning of ADVERSITY, which also means to be broken and ground up into nothing. Adversity, then, is all about leading us to fully humble ourselves in repentance, submission, and trust in our Heavenly Father, realizing that only by trusting in Him can we have the life he desires for us. I PETER 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Hear the full episode and much more on Heddels+: http://heddels.plus If you own a tote bag and have my phone number, chances are you have texted me about a new PBS documentary that just released this week. I'm of course talking about “Riveted: The History of Jeans”, the latest in PBS's “American Experience” series directed by Michael Bicks and Anna Lee Strachan. The documentary traces indigo twill cloth from its origins in Northern Africa, Italy, and France in the late Renaissance through the American enslaved peoples, gold miners, biker gangs, high fashion, and hip hop. We all watched it and I guess my gut reaction is it was good but they could've talked more about Taco Bell. We get into that as well as the rebirth, or lack thereof, of Brooks Bros. and J.Crew in a recent GQ article. Find all that and more on this week's episode.
"Riveted" tells the fascinating and surprising story of this iconic American garment.
On Friday's show: We bring you the latest on winter weather around the state and in Greater Houston. Also this hour: Mayor Sylvester Turner says he's committing $44 million to fight violent crime. But where will the money be spent? And we learn about future plans to bring back the River Oaks Theatre, which closed last March. Then, we discuss whether the implementation of underground stormwater tunnels throughout Greater Houston will help prevent flooding. Plus, we break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week, including a new name for the Washington's NFL team and a groundhog's untimely passing. And we learn about the history of something you might be wearing right now: blue jeans. That staple of American fashion is the subject of a new documentary called Riveted from the PBS series American Experience. It airs Monday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. on Houston Public Media, TV 8.
If you work on Capitol Hill, you've probably heard about “Dear White Staffers.” It's an Instagram account that started as a place where aides of color on the Hill — a place dominated by white lawmakers and staff — could express their frustrations. But it's expanded beyond that to become a go-to hub where anonymous staffers name and shame bad bosses and colleagues, and complain about absurdly long workdays, gender discrimination allegations, salaries so low they rely on food stamps to eat, generally toxic workplace behavior and an endemic lack of diversity. On Thursday's show: As an Arctic cold front has moved off the coast, it could bring parts of Houston some wintry precipitation and temperatures below freezing tonight. A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon Friday. But what happens elsewhere in Texas may influence how much of a test this is for our energy grid. Also this hour: The British ambassador to the United States, Dame Karen Pierce, is in Houston this week. We find out why and discuss a wide range of topics. And Exxon Mobil is moving its headquarters from Dallas to its Houston campus next year. We discuss what that could mean for the city and Exxon's employees.
We preview the next film in the PBS series American Experience...... "Riveted: The History of Jeans." The film traces the history of blue jeans through the lens of our country's history- examining who has worn jeans at various points in time and why. The film airs on PBS next week.

The new movie 'Stillwater' is a tour-de-force and we are joined by writer/director Tom McCarthy as well as his co-writers. Later on, we also talk to the writer/director of 'Let Us In', Craig Moss. In this episode, we talk about... How the team for Stillwater decided which elements of the plot to reveal to the audience and when to create an aura of mystery and sustain interest. The profound and timely themes that Stillwater's plot explores, and whether the themes or the plot came first when developing the script. How the team developed characters for the script, and how those conversations informed casting. How Craig Moss found a bit of a loophole in intellectual property when he created Let Us In by tapping into urban legends. Moss's early influences and how he got started in film. What it was like for Moss to make the jump from producing his own short films to directing a feature. Moss's experience creating various parody films. How Moss and his partner developed Let Us In from the legend of the black-eyed children and other influences for the film, like The Goonies, ET, and Stranger Things. What it was like for Moss to work with his daughter as the lead actor on the film. On this week's CHH, Dr. Fraad is joined by psychotherapist and author Tess Fraad-Wolff to talk about celebrity pop artist Britney Spears. Spears' plight captures our attention because she personifies American suffering. Her exploited, adolescent, coy, sugary sexuality presents her as an object of men's desire without her own desire. Spears represents the gender regression of the Right Wing. Her state of exploitation, earning millions that her boss-father-slavemaster appropriates. We identify because Britney's father's strategy is the strategy of US capitalism to control the American people: isolate, medicate, and appropriate. No wonder we are riveted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvUp3vuKYjA Do you want to leave a legacy with an estate plan that transfers wealth and empowers the next generation? Find someone who is helping others do it successfully. And that means tailoring a customized, bespoke plan specifically to your family. Today we're talking with highly recognized estate planning attorney, Andrew Howell, about the principles and wisdom he's distilled from working with ultra-high net worth families and business owners. So if you want to know how to entrust wealth to future generations, provide for unity in the family, and leave a legacy of wisdom and opportunity so you can create an estate plan that transcends generations, tune in now! In this episode about estate planning to bridge generations, you'll discover: Why traditional estate planning fails at increasing family wealth and promoting character development. How the core of the Entrusted model of estate planning is about meaningful relationships. How to transfer wealth in a way that incentivizes work and stewardship instead of producing entitlement. The top 3 eroding effects on generational wealth. Why traditional estate planning that divides assets limits your family's ability to make an impact. Why leaving your money to charity creates a lost opportunity for your family. How to set up your family wealth as a bank to create opportunity, entrepreneurship, and accountability. Why the first priority to leaving a legacy is to know who you are as individuals and a family. Where Estate Planning Fits into Your Cashflow Creation System Encircling your family and assets with a bulletproof estate plan will maximize your peace of mind. But it's just one small step of a greater journey. That's why we've put together the 3-step Entrepreneur's Cash Flow System. The first step is keeping more of the money you make. This includes tax planning, debt restructuring, cash flow awareness, and restructuring your savings so you can access it as an emergency/opportunity fund. This step frees up and increases your cash flow, so you have more to save, and consequently, more to invest. Then, you'll protect your money with savings, privatized banking and legal protection. This is where estate planning fits in. You'll know that no matter what happens to you, your wishes will be carried out, your assets will remain intact, and your wisdom will empower generations after you. Finally, you'll put your money to work and get it to make more by investing in cash-flowing assets to build time and money freedom and leave a rich legacy. About Andrew Howell Andrew L. The Importance of ‘Reps'I'm currently reviewing a book by an ex Hollywood agent and there's a story in there where he goes to meet with Jon Bonjovi and he's playing something on his guitar. This agent asks what he's playing, expecting Bonjovi to say it's a new song he's working on. But actually Bonjovi said, “I'm just working on my scales.” The best in the world make it look easy but they never stop practicing the fundamentals. When it comes to speaking, you absolutely need to get ‘reps' in before you try to deliver your talk. Where Most People Go WrongIt's easy to fall into the trap of just reading through your speech on paper or going back through your slides over and over and practicing the speech in your head. The problem with this, Jim explains, is that it generates a feeling of confidence and success without actually forcing you to do any of the things that make speaking so hard. Another thing people often do is write out the entire speech word-for-word and spend a bunch of time trying to memorize it.Science-Based Practice StrategiesIn this episode, Jim explains the science behind the best times to practice a speech. We also talk about how to memorize your talk, whether you can use notecards, and how well you should know the material. I reveal some of the strategies I use to prepare for my own speeches and I also share an idea from my new book, Flip the Script, and show you how to apply it to your speeches.
Ron Lynch is a legend among his friends and those who know him, many reasons stick out with me but the most important one is how he gives very freely of his knowledge and time, the call him “The Marketing Mercenary”. I met Ron in June last year on a private Island in Croatia, some may hear me mention the “Baby Bathwater Institute”, this was their annual European retreat where Ron was one of the presenters in the outdoor pavilion under a beautiful sky and surrounded by crystal clear waters, the last place you would typically want to sit and listen to a lecture… Enter Ron Lynch: I was Riveted from the very beginning because Ron involved his audience from the very first word and gave us tools to use for mindset, business and life in general that simply filled the gaps. A humbler person is hard to find but his feedback is priceless, coupled with his very direct BS detector you are in for a treat when you meet Ron. I know you will enjoy this episode greatly! In this episode, the Goods from the Woods Boys are joined by L.A. radio legend, Steve Chiotakis, Afternoon News Anchor for KCRW here in Los Angeles! So, we figured that since we have a legitimate newsman in the studio, we might as well talk about the moment in 2009 when the news (specifically 24 hour cable news) "jumped the shark". On October 15, 2009, the nation was captivated by events in the skies above Denver, Colorado where a UFO shaped balloon supposedly carrying a six year old boy named "Falcon" inside of it was floating across the sky and the nation was RIVETED. When the balloon laded, there was no boy inside, and suddenly everything just exploded. The whole story of the Heene Family is one of the craziest things you'll ever hear and you will be surprised (or maybe you won't be) to find out what they're like now. This episode is such a good time. Follow Steve on all forms of social media @RadioChio. Song of the week is "Downhearted Fools" by Chris Stalcup & The Grange. There a quite a few online property auction platforms out there right now. Initially these websites were seen as potentially taboo, scary, and extremely risky to purchase actual properties from. Now, it's the mainstream... Hedgefunds with millions of dollars are bidding on properties daily. Sheriff sales are 'marketed' via auction.com to increase live auction attendance at the courthouse. Homes are bought by owner occupants and investors daily. Today's podcast is a LIVE account of an actual auction of a property on www.hubzu.com, one of the many platforms out there right now. We digest the fees, timing the bids, potential strategies, and ride the roller coaster of bidding via online auction for investment properties. If you are interested in bidding via online auction for properties, or have done it before, check out this podcast!
The four heroes return to the tavern they once visited, after a lengthy few months of slaying monsters and travelling with various heroes. Josh throws his pack on an empty table and beelines straight to the bar for a pint. Fish sits down at the table, and begins to etch on a wrinkly parchment. Shea sets his stuff down and hurries off to the bathroom, holding his weak bladder for much too long. Morgan joins Fish at the table and motions to the head mistress to have her send his favorite girl. Within seconds, he falls asleep. As the mistress arrives, she stares at the passed out hero, and then looks at Fish. Fish looks up from his parchment, shrugs his shoulders, and then continues to write onto the paper. The mistress, angered that her time was wasted, slaps the napping hero in the back of the head, then ascends the stairs back to the second floor. Rich, the bartender whips up four pints of his finest ales for the heroes. He joins Josh, as they begin to catch up on the tales of the creature eliminating. Josh tells of the heroes' sagas, weaving story after story. Rich listens intently, and then primes Josh for a story of his own. “There is a man that just entered our dusty town. No one has ever seen him before. He is unlike anything anyone has ever seen.” Riveted, Josh sits at the end of his chair, gulping his beer. His eyes are widened, and a frothy, beery moustache gleams on his upper lip. Rich continues, “He has been labelled one of the greatest monster destroyers this world has ever seen. But that's not what makes him so odd.” Rich, looked around, ensuring that no one was eavesdropping. Josh repeats Rich's actions, almost looking to see if the strange creature he spoke of would suddenly pop up. “No, what's so odd about this man is---” Suddenly, a group of 3 enemies burst into the bar, surprising everyone. They knocked over Fish and Morgan, tangling them with the legs of the chairs and tables. Some of the patrons fled for upstairs, fearing for their life. Josh went to draw his sword, but remembered that he had set it on the table in his weariness. Shea attempted to exit the bathroom to join the fracas, but locked himself in the bathroom and couldn't get out. A man burst into the tavern, wearing red overalls and a red hat. He donned a thick moustache, one not made of beer. The heroes looked to the man, and were greeted with, “Here we GOOOOOOOOOOO!”
Jim Davies, author of the book Riveted discusses how imagination and creativity work, and how can we help our teens to think outside of the box. He explains the key to raising teens who can think for themselves is to reward them when they take risks–even if the risks don’t end up turning out very well.

You can grab a copy of "Riveted" by Jim Davies by clicking here: http://www.tailopez.com/riveted On today's Book-of-the-Day show, I had the chance to interview Jim Davies, author of "Riveted." In his book, he says you have to understand 6 things about the human brain to win friends and influence people: 1. We are interested in stories about humans... 2. We pay particular attention to things we hope or fear are true... 3. We delight in finding patterns... 4. We are attracted to incongruity, apparent contradictions, novelty, and puzzles... 5. The nature of our bodies—the nature of our eyes and other sense organs, affects what kinds of things draw us... 6. We have certain psychological traits, many of which are evolved, that make us like and dislike, believe and disbelieve.... So when you interact with other people, make sure you utilize all 6 of these to compel, fascinate, and persuade everyone you meet. Cassandra Troyan is the guest. Her new book, Kill Manual, is available from Artifice Books in October 2014. Chris Kraus says "The sometime-narrator of Kill Manual anastasiasteele3577 haunts chat rooms and BDSM dating sites in search of oblivion. But oblivion hardly needs to be searched for: It’s already there. This disturbing and radical book reveals, among other things, the half-life left in the wake of ubiquitous, data-mined, robotically fabricated internet content. The world ends in exhaustion. Troyan’s piercingly felt, sampled text probes the immateriality of language. Her work is brilliant and brave." And Megan Milks says "This book beats with a steady intensity that is equal parts hot and terrifying; its words are sticky emissions, or fists in the flesh of the eyeball. With a voice both chillingly disembodied and viscerally corporeal, cut with mordant wit, Kill Manual moans, snarls, and laughs, harshly. Riveted by shame, refusing any boundary between pleasure and disgust, with these poems Cassandra Troyan orchestrates a fever march towards negation: 'You are not allowed to call this radical.'" Monologue topics: sleeplessness, My Little Pony, lying, unicorns. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
