Durante el verano de 1943 se libró en las estepas de la provincia de Kursk, en el suroeste de Rusia, la mayor batalla de tanques de la historia. Supuso una victoria fundamental para la Unión Soviética y constituyó el punto de inflexión definitivo que inclinó la suerte de la guerra para los aliados en el frente oriental. La derrota fue devastadora para los alemanes ya que meses antes el Sexto Ejército alemán había capitulado en Stalingrado. Desde ese momento el Tercer Reich no volvería a pasar a la ofensiva en Rusia y se aceleró el repliegue hacia el oeste que concluiría con la batalla de Berlín entre abril y mayo de 1945. La batalla de Kursk arrancó como una pequeña ofensiva alemana denominada Operación Ciudadela cuyo objetivo era aplanar la línea de frente eliminando el saliente de Kursk controlado por los soviéticos. Hitler estaba convencido de que aquello era un punto débil y podría obtener una victoria a bajo coste que podría compensar en cierta medida el desastre de Stalingrado del que él era el gran responsable por haber dividido las fuerzas que se dirigían hacia el Cáucaso. Si le salía bien la propaganda nazi podría emplear intensamente la victoria para transmitir a los alemanes la idea de que seguían llevando la voz cantante y el triunfo final estaba cercano. Capturarían, además, a un número considerable de prisioneros de guerra que luego serían enviados a los campos de trabajo esclavo para mantener la industria de guerra en funcionamiento, Pero la Wehrmacht fracasó en su intento y se vio sorprendida por un contraataque brutal del lado soviético, la llamada Operación Kutuzov que perseguía embolsar a los alemanes atacando directamente su retaguardia. A partir de ese momento los carros de combate se convirtieron en los protagonistas de la batalla. Los alemanes pusieron sobre el terreno más de tres mil tanques, los soviéticos más de cinco mil. Esta vez Hitler no había podido disfrutar del factor sorpresa. El ejército rojo les estaba esperando. La inteligencia británica, que tenía acceso a gran número de transmisiones cifradas alemanas, informó a Stalin de los planes alemanes de atacar por el saliente de Kursk. Para contenerlo dispusieron una defensa en profundidad concebida para contener a los acorazados de la Wehrmacht. Una vez consiguieron detener el golpe dio comienzo la contraofensiva que obligó a los alemanes a retroceder. La derrota en Kursk no fue la única mala noticia que llegó a la cancillería ese verano. De forma simultánea a los combates en la estepa, los aliados occidentales desembarcaron en Sicilia obligando a Hitler a despachar tropas hacia Italia. Eso consumió las reservas que estaban destinadas a sostener el esfuerzo bélico en el este y obligó a los alemanes a reordenar las prioridades. Se les abrió un nuevo frente en el continente europeo que empezó a avanzar por la península itálica sacando de paso a la Italia fascista de la guerra. La batalla de Kursk se terminaría saldando con una victoria soviética. Era la primera vez desde que había dado comienzo la Operación Barbarroja dos años antes en la que el ejército rojo conseguía detener una ofensiva alemana antes de que ésta avanzase y cobrase impulso. Los alemanes, a pesar de que contaban aún con una formidable fuerza ofensiva, no pudieron atravesar las defensas soviéticas, que en nada se parecían ya a las del principio de la guerra. Para algunos generales alemanes como Heinz Guderian, la de Kursk fue la derrota decisiva, peor incluso que la de Stalingrado ya que anuló por completo la capacidad de la Wehrmacht para recuperar la iniciativa. La suerte quedó echada. El ejército alemán seguiría combatiendo casi dos años más en el este, pero tras la batalla de Kursk perdieron toda esperanza de ganar la guerra. Ich spreche mit Roman Töppel über die Hintergründe, Planung und Durchführung der Schlacht bei Kursk 1943.

I sommeren 1943 fandt historiens største kampvognslag sted i et område nær den russiske by Kursk. En lille million tyskere kæmpede mod mere end to millioner sovjetiske soldater i knapt to varme og støvede sommermåneder på de russiske stepper. Sovjetunionen vandt slaget, men under uhyrlige omkostninger, og har formentlig derfor lige siden haft et stort behov for at retfærdiggøre tabene på op mod 1,7 millioner dræbte, sårede og savnede og over 6.000 kampvogne. Slaget er derfor i sovjetisk og russisk historieskrivning blevet helgenkåret til trods for, at mange i dag mener, at der var tale om et såkaldt taktisk nederlag, hvor sejren på slagmarkerne omkring Kursk slet ikke stod mål med tabene. Slagets udfald er også omdiskuteret, da ingen af parterne på slagmarken opnåede de mål, som de satte sig for.
