Whether you're an artist, a creative, or just someone looking for a bit of inspiration, this episode is packed with real talk and motivational vibes. I am thrilled to have the incredibly talented Alexis Tidwell Bailey on the show. Alexis took a pretty unique path into the theater world, jumping into acting with zero preconceived notions or baggage from traditional training. Her journey underscores the importance of diverse pathways into the arts. As an aspiring choir teacher who was encouraged by her then boyfriend, now husband, and theater mentors, Alexis took bold steps, moving to New York and taking risks to chase her new found dreams.  We'll dive into Alexis's experiences, discussing the importance of representation, the power of self-discovery, and the significance of staying open to possibilities. Alexis shares her insights on learning through self-teaching, tackling societal pressures, and the value of flexibility while pursuing one's dreams. Join us as we explore how listening to your heart and not being limited by fear can lead to remarkable pivots in your artistic journey, which without Alexis won't be the star of the children's show Mimi's Costume Closet today.   Alexis Tidwell is a New York based entertainer from Memphis, TN who received her Master and Bachelor of Music degrees in Choral Music Education from the University of Tennessee. Some of her favorite credits include Little Eva in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical First National Tour, Joanne in RENT, Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act, Marvina in Shout Sister Shout! (Sister Rosetta Tharpe musical), Camae in The Mountaintop, Dorothy in The Wiz, Lorrell in Dreamgirls, and Charlotte in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. You can currently catch her on tv as Miss Mimi in Miss Mimi's Costume Closet, streaming now on Peacock Kids. In Ep, 29 we talk about the Baz Luhrmann film ELVIS with GAYLE WALD, George Washington University professor of American Studies and author of Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Our conversation extends to Black musicians and music traditions that shaped Elvis Presley's music and how that aspect of Elvis's story is dramatized in this 2022 biopic. Wald's Rosetta Tharpe biography has been adapted into a musical, "Shout Sister Shout!," with book by Cheryl L. West, premiering at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC in March 2023. You can purchase Wald's "Shout, Sister, Shout!..." book from the podcast's affiliate bookstore on bookshop.org. This conversation was recorded 2/13/23.

From Jimmie Vaughan with Omar Kent Dykes through to Quinn Devereaux there are so many amazing tracks to enjoy. Of course we pay tribute to the recently passed Don Craine of the Downliners Sect, part of the legendary birth of the British blues rock scene. Add to that some amazing tues from the likes of the Cinelli Brothers, Nick Andreas, Kathy Murray and the Kilowatts, Arsen Shomakov, Paul Cox, Emma Wilson, The British Bluescasting Corporation, Shout Sister Shout, Elles Bailey, Mike Zito, Jerry Portnoy and much more. The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe by Gayle F. Wald, 2007. Brought up in the Pentecostal church where congregants celebrated God with lively, joyful, rhythmic music using voice, trumpets, tambourines, pianos, organs, and guitars, Sister Rosetta brought rhythm and swing, her powerful voice, her charisma and her own brand of guitar playing out into the world. This Black woman's achievements on the electric guitar have been minimized, but her distinctive fills and thrilling solos were revolutionary and influenced the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and a host of British blues aficionados like Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. Join us to experience the story and music of Sister Rosetta, who was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

SAMUEL JAMES is a young master of fingerstyle, slide, banjo, harmonica, and piano and is not yet out of his twenties. With musical influences ranging from Skip James and Sonny Terry to Gus Cannon and Charley Patton, such understanding of pre-war blues is rarely embodied in the music of one person. SHOUT SISTER SHOUT is an old-time jazz unit, formed by Boston Music Award Winner Rachel Davis and roots band Steppin In It through a common love of 30s & 40s jazz standards. The summer of 2006 found the two acts working at the same festivals, which led to joining each other for a classic tune by Nat King Cole or Billie Holiday during their respective sets.
