In this episode we talk about one of the most prophetic doomsday/dystopian novels ever written: EARTH ABIDES.George R. Stewart got so much right in his novel - it is truly amazing!
Sermon Scripture: Romans 8:18-25Even now, creation groans — not in despair, but in hope. In Romans 8, Paul reminds us that the earth itself remembers the weight of the fall and the promise of freedom. We, too, remember. Like the Israelites in the wilderness and like Paul on the road to Damascus, we live in the tension between what has been and what is yet to come. This week, we explore the sacred ache of waiting — and the persistent hope that God's redemption is still unfolding, for us and for the world.

Because of the double-header last week, the holidays, and our charity event, we delayed our coverage on Earth Abides so that we could cover its final episodes. We meet EA's version of Negan; what it means to bear the weight of grave decisions; placing our expectations on a future that isn't promised; and coming to terms with the world and who you've become. Whichever way you decide to move forward, The Earth Abides.
Earth Abides: Episode 5 "Predators" A drought hits San Lupo; a nomadic group arrives that knows how to find water and want to trade; Ish has his doubts, but chooses to accept help. Earth Abides: Episode 6 "The Return" When Ish catches Charlie assaulting Evie, San Lupo must decide how to punish evil; Joey falls ill after the virus returns; Ish feels humanity's future hanging in the balance. It was a big week for Tveit fans- Aaron finally performed his rescheduled concert at Groton Hill Music Center and then this past Sunday, audiences met Aaron's character Charlie in Earth Abides. Two totally different extremes of Aaron for sure. This episodes recaps both events, but heads up, the Earth Abides talk contains some spoilers.
We experience not only a few time-jumps in this episode, but also an increase in the amount of survivors in tow. Seneca wrote, "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end," and all of this exists in what the prophet Yishayahu / Isaiah referred to as a World Without End. Will we finally put the past to rest or will we allow it to haunt us?
Earth Abides: Episode 3 "World Without End" New survivors appear, but Ish doesn't trust them, and Emma invites them in; a bad storm slams San Lupo. Feedback : blackgirlcouch@gmail.com (audio/written) Tumblr: blackgirlcouch Instagram: @blackgirlcouch Youtube: blackgirlcouchreviews
Earth Abides: Episode 2 "The Space Between" Ish finds a survivor and feels a romantic spark; he feels the need to see if it real, or if it is the reality that they are last two people on earth; rats plague San Lupo; Ish dreams of rebuilding civilization. Feedback : blackgirlcouch@gmail.com (audio/written) Tumblr: blackgirlcouch Instagram: @blackgirlcouch Youtube: blackgirlcouchreviews
Whereas the first episode's antagonist was (and, to a certain degree, still is) oneself, Ish & Emma go head-to-head with the natural world itself. Will nature succeed in finishing the job it started with humanity?
Earth Abides S1 Episode 1"Alone" Ish, a solitary young geologist, barely survives a snake bite; after he wakes from a coma, he drives to the nearest town only to find dead bodies; he searches for survivors, from San Francisco to Las Vegas. Feedback : blackgirlcouch@gmail.com (audio/written) Tumblr: blackgirlcouch Instagram: @blackgirlcouch Youtube: blackgirlcouchreviews
With your help in the chat, the team tackles Earth Abides' pilot, "Alone". Our protagonist, Ish, survives a near-fatal venomous snakebite. His reward? Drifting in and out of consciousness through a world-ending global pandemic. How would *you* handle the prospect of being the last surviving human?

Hannah is back from Winter Institute and she has all sorts of thoughts on the state of the bookselling industry (900 booksellers in the same place is NOT illegal, it turns out). She's not sure she's a hero, exactly, but not every bookseller is in tony Beverly Farms. Also, it turns out she didn't learn all that much about what's coming down the pipeline, but she did get a little jazzed about "Our Hidden Conversations," by Michele Norris, and she's really jazzed about "The Other Valley," the debut novel from Scott Alexander Howard (it's "speculative," which is apparently "all the genres that depart from realism"), who studied philosophy at the University of Toronto. Depending on your view of the current state of the world, you might find Paul Lynch's "Prophet Song" either speculative or all-too-realistic — Sam loves it. A look at the domestic side of fascism's rise that forces you to consider what happens when it comes to your front door. Even more dystopian is "Earth Abides," George R. Stewart's classic from 1949, which is back in print and in development for an Amazon series. You may feel like you've read it before, but that's because it spawned a ton of imitators. Thanks to Cincinnati's Downbound Books for the find! Finally, Sam can't figure out why Colson Whitehead's "Crook Manifesto" didn't hit the way "Harlem Shuffle" did. It's great, a continuation of Whitehead's exploration of the mid-century Harlem underground with his trademark sentence-level excellence and expert ability to show, not tell.

Today we are joined by Andi Schmied. Andi is an urban designer and visual artist. With her installations and printed work, she explores the architectural framing of social space, and uncovers urban anomalies. These vary from areas that have deviated far from their originally planned function, utopian architectures or spaces of extreme privilege. Schmied graduated as an urban designer from the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL, London) and is currently a PhD candidate at Moholy Nagy University of Arts and Design. Her latest book, Private Views: A High-Rise Panorama of Manhattan won the first prize in visual arts category of the Most Beautiful Czech Books competition. Her work, among other places, has been shown from London to Vienna and everywhere in between. You will know Justin Cronin as the author of the landmark The Passage. That trilogy set the world of horror and science fiction (and all points in between) alight in the early 2000s and he's back after eight long years, with The Ferryman. This time he's swapping vampire plagues for something wholly more subtle … but no less terrifying. I can't tell you what ‘cos that would ruin it for everyone, but it may shake the very building blocks of your reality.Justin and I discuss all manner of existential worries, from the nature of reality to the malign impact of ‘wellbeing' lifestyles. We talk about Kazuo Ishiguro, Planet of the Apes and myriad other influences that flow into the wonder, horror and awe of The Ferryman. Don't worry, we cover The Passage too… And he also explains how telling any story is just like telling a joke really, really well.Enjoy! Escape is an American radio drama. It was radio's leading anthology series of high-adventure radio dramas, airing on CBS from July 7, 1947 to September 25, 1954. Since the program did not have a regular sponsor like Suspense, it was subjected to frequent schedule shifts and lower production budgets, although Richfield Oil signed on as a sponsor for five months in 1950. Despite these problems, Escape enthralled many listeners during its seven-year run. The series' well-remembered opening combined Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain with this introduction, as intoned by William Conrad and later Paul Frees: "Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you... Escape!" Following the opening theme, a second announcer (usually Roy Rowan) would add: "Escape! Designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure!" Adaptations: Of the more than 230 Escape episodes, most have survived in good condition. Many story premises, both originals and adaptations, involved a protagonist in dire life-or-death straits, and the series featured more science fiction and supernatural tales than Suspense. Some of the memorable adaptations include Daphne du Maurier's "The Birds", Carl Stephenson's "Leiningen Versus the Ants", Algernon Blackwood's "Confession", Ray Bradbury's oft-reprinted "Mars Is Heaven", George R. Stewart's Earth Abides (the program's only two-parter), Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" and F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz". John Collier's "Evening Primrose", about people who live inside a department store, was later adapted to TV as a Stephen Sondheim musical starring Anthony Perkins. William Conrad, Harry Bartell and Elliott Reid were heard in the chilling "Three Skeleton Key" (broadcast on 15 November 1949), the tale of three men trapped in an isolated lighthouse by thousands of rats; the half-hour was adapted from an Esquire short story by the French writer George Toudouze and later remade for the March 17, 1950 broadcast starring Vincent Price, Harry Bartell and Jeff Corey and again for the August 9, 1953 broadcast starring Paul Frees, Ben Wright and Jay Novello. Actors on the series included Elvia Allman, Eleanor Audley, Parley Baer, Michael Ann Barrett, Tony Barrett, Harry Bartell, Ted Bliss, Lillian Buyeff, Ken Christy, William Conrad, Ted deCorsia, John Dehner, Don Diamond, Paul Dubov, Sam Edwards, Virginia Gregg, Lou Merrill, Howard McNear, Jess Kirkpatrick, B.J. Young, Marvin Miller, Frank Lovejoy, Berry Kroeger, Vic Perrin, Elliott Lewis, Eleanore Tanin, Herb Vigran, Jack Webb, Peggy Webber and Will Wright. Music was supplied by Del Castillo, organist Ivan Ditmars, Cy Feuer, Wilbur Hatch and Leith Stevens. The announcers were Paul Frees and Roy Rowan. A television counterpart aired on CBS TV for a few months during 1950. The program's opening announcement—"Tired of the everyday grind?"—was employed as a slogan for the counterculture magazine, New Escapologist.

A television counterpart aired on CBS TV for a few months during 1950. The program's opening announcement—"Tired of the everyday grind?"—was employed as a slogan for the counterculture magazine, New Escapologist.
To explore what it means to be human, Ben and Tao play with a pussy - a personified cat with an AI drone sidekick - while befriending wannabe artistic bipedal robots in feline post-apocalyptic, post-Homo sapiens adventure tale, Stray. It's not all highfalutin social commentary though, they do get to remote detonate mutant bacteria with a light gun strapped to their teeny weeny cat vests. Analysis includes discussion of dystopian storytelling and tropes, the role of animals in games, children's storybooks, whether art is a uniquely human venture, Tom Hanks, prison escapes in games, plus Ben shares why he's not fond of cats or domesticated animals in general. As usual, some major story spoilers towards the end of the pod. If you're going to play it, it's recommended you do so before listening.Content Warning: PEGI 12. Cursing. Animal cruelty. Egregious cockney accents.Clarifications:* All music for Stray was composed by Yann van der Cruyssen* The collective noun for cats is, apparently, a ‘Clowder'. Doesn't roll off my tongue either. The collective noun Ben used, ‘Posse', is ‘a group of people armed with legal authority', for instance, policemen.* The Road is a dystopian novel by Cormac McCarthy. There's nothing ‘basic' about it. Ben regrets the term!* The book Tao is clutching for is not ‘The Earth Remains', an entirely different and unrelated novel by Shelley Burchfield, but sci-fi classic, Earth Abides, a 1949 American post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by George R. Stewart. It tells the story of the fall of civilization from deadly disease and the emergence of a new culture with simpler tools.* Kurt Zouma's personal contact details are… not really going to be published here. After the ApocalypseA pandemic survival storySeason one, Episode seven, “Home Again”The skies were darkening now as Janet eased the Range Rover onto the entrance ramp to the expressway. Her hands trembled as she gripped the steering wheel hard, adrenaline still pumping through her body. “That man just committed murder right in front of me”, she said, not sure if she could believe it. What the hell was going on? What was this nightmare? Was it like this everywhere? Episode 7 Outro: Hello from your producer Chris. I wanted to check in and see if any of you folks needed anything. Are you enjoying the story? I'm enjoying writing it. Stick around next week to see what happens to Janet. I really want to keep this going, but I can't survive the podcasting apocalypse without your help. Specifically, subscribe the podcast, like it, write a review, share it on your social media and send the links to 2 or 3 or 5 friends! And finally, become a patron of the show, go to Patreon.com/aftertheapocalypse all one word and make a donation, that's really the best way to support the story. I'm not looking to make any money off of this but I do need help to keep the production going. I don't' have any artwork of Janet, but I envision here as looking like a bad-ass ironman triathlete. If anyone wants to take a swing at some fan art I'd love to see it. As we progress this will become a book and of course an audio book. I'm already have an audio book on audible from one of my other projects and it gets good traction. If anyone listening is or knows any publishers who would be interested feel free to send them my way! Last week I talked about some of the genesis movies of the apocalypse genre. This week I'll share one book that has definitely influenced me. Its' a book called “Earth Abides”, published in 1949 by George R. Stewart. A man is in a remote cabin, and wakes up from having a sickness, only to realize most of the population has been killed off. He doesn't die because he was bitten by a bat and it gave him partial immunity. Why is it always a bat? I think it was a bat in all those moves I talked about last week too. Anyhow, the book is very thoughtful about how the survivors would act, how the infrastructure would slowly crumble and how civilization would revert. The central metaphor is the Golden Gate Bridge. Stephen King called ‘Earth Abides” his inspiration for the Stand, and Jimi Hendrix said it was his favorite book. I probably read this book 30 years ago and the some of the scenes are still vivid in my mind. If you'd like to contact me directly you can shoot me an email at cyktrussell at gmail dot com. cyktrussell@gmail.comThank you for listening, be safe, and keep surviving. OutroAfter the Apocalypse is written and produced by Chris Russell (that's me) aftertheapocalypse.meThe show is narrated by Robert Weinheimer who's work can be found at https://commandvoices.com/The intro and outro music is by Bobby Quinn https://www.fiverr.com/bobbyquinncThank you for listening to After the apocalypse. Gus looks at one of the earliest works of distopian science fiction. Though dated and dramatic, Earth Abides gives us valuable insight to American life and fears in 1930s.

This gothic short story spawned a bunch of fictional viruses from Earth Abides to the Stand and the Red Plague. It concerns Prince Prospero who welds himself into his castle with 1,000 of his best mates to party and wait out the disease. On the night of a masquerade ball, as the huge ebony clock tolls midnight, an uninvited guest appears, ending the party. We also consider the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, by Wallace Walpole, as well as a quick review of Poe's life and his poem, The Raven.Read the short story here:http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1064/1064-h/1064-h.htmThoughts? Science fiction readers have long been electrified by Stewart's 1949 novel Earth Abides, a post-apocalyptic story of a small community near Berkeley after most of humanity is killed by disease. Stewart was a diverse writer with a strong interest in history, name, place, and the environment, but this thoughtful novel is his most famous work and inspired Stephen King's The Stand, various musical efforts, and the video game The Last of Us. An exploration of what is civilization with some surprisingly contemporary themes relevant during the pandemic and civil unrest.A song we mention:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGiWolvE_gY&feature=youtu.beThoughts? ESC is a work of experimental audio-based scholarship combining sound studies, radio history, and environmental criticism. This unique project is a fully open access, fully digital suite of audiographic essays, presented as a ten-part podcast series, combining spoken commentary, clips from classic radio dramas, excerpts from films and television shows, news reports, and the work of contemporary sound artists. A brief written essay on the ESC website provides a helpful introduction and context for this project. ESC takes as its point of departure the CBS Radio adventure series Escape (1947–54). The postwar years saw both a decline in popularity for American radio drama, and the dawn of the Anthropocene era, with human beings emerging as the primary force affecting the earth's systems. Jacob Smith considers Escape's adventure stories from an ecocritical perspective, analyzing the geographic, sociopolitical, and ecological details of the stories to reveal how they are steeped in social and environmental history. The work of contemporary sound artists and field recordists underscores the relevance of sound in these narratives and demonstrates audio's potential as a key medium for scholarship. ESC features recordings by some of the most prominent sound artists working in this area, including Daniel Blinkhorn, Peter Cusak, David Dunn, JLIAT, Christina Kubisch, Francisco López, Sally Ann McIntyre, Chris Watson, and Jana Winderen. ESC makes the urgency of our critical ecological moment audible in a new way. The audio essays articulate what it means to live in an Anthropocene era and posit alternative ways of conceptualizing our historical moment. ESC sharpens our ability to listen and respond to our world with greater ecological awareness. Published by The University of Michigan Press, 2019. https://doi.org/10.3998/mpub.10120795

We sit down with voice-over artist Kevin Pierce aka the "Voice of the Apocalypse." He shares with us how he got started in the business of book narration and eventually became the voice reading most of our favorite post-apocalyptic prepper fiction books to you. ~ Become a supporting member here: http://www.itrh.net ~ Resources from this episode can be found at: http://www.intherabbithole.com/e238 Hiding deep in the bowls of dystopian fiction is something special, terrifying, titling, and even insightful: Prepper fiction. Some say this all started with the book Alas, Babylon. Others say it goes further back to the book Earth Abides. Then the genre slumbered for nearly 60-years only stirring occasionally as the decades rolled on. But then the money vanished, and the hordes roved in Patriots in 1998. Next, the lights went out, and the hordes roved once more in the book One Second After on March 17th, 2009. And finally, the match was lit; prepper fiction exploded. Rather than waiting for a decade or two between great stories, we're now on to the next book as soon as we finish the last. Sometimes we're attacked by Zombies. Other times we're stricken with a sweeping pandemic. Often, we're taken back to the stone age by an EMP. Whatever your prepper jam, there seems to be one voice tickling your eardrums in most of the audiobook versions of these books. Its a voice so ubiquitous in the genre your mind is immediately transported as though you've just heard some deeply embedded NLP command. You might know this voice by the name Kevin Pierce, or you might know him as the Voice of the Apocalypse. You know the sound of his voice well, either way. But most of us do not know the man behind the voice. Who is he? How did he get his start? And how did he come to be the Voice of the Apocalypse? Let's find out... Kevin Pierce on Being the Voice of the Apocalypse: How he got his start in TV and Radio His transition to book narration Is he strictly a narrator of prepper fiction? What it takes to be the narrator of more than 330 books How long does it take to produce a typical audiobook? Does he ever turn down books because they’re just not good? That time Kevin played a 13-year-old Vietnamese girl His favorite non-prepper books Does he consider himself a prepper? That time reading all those prepper books paid off How does reading all these dystopian fiction books impact his state of mind How he prepares for reading the books to you The most influential and pivotal moment in his career as a voice-over artist ~ Become a supporting member here: http://www.itrh.net ~ Resources from this episode can be found at: http://www.intherabbithole.com/e238

Where would you go?

This week we explore what it would be like to live in a post-apocalyptic 1950's United States. A terrible virus has killed off the majority of the planet and one man tries to make a new way of life in this strange new world. This is the only 2 part story Escape ever produced and is one of their most exciting and harrowing tales of survival. In this episode, I talk with Bay Area musician Art Elliot about his song Earth Abides. Art's music broaches subjects such as apocalyptic futures, lost loves, bleak ice ages, and depression-era folk art. Fashioning himself as a modern day alchemist Art transmutes popular music to the experimental, jazz to power pop and folk to blues. His tropes are cryptic messages etched into the ether for a generation deaf and droned out to their portable electronic listening devices. Art has performed at many local Bay Area venues including Mama Buzz, El Rio and AMF Southshore Bowling Alley. At the time of this writing Art has emerged from his laboratory with his first EP, Earth Abides, which features songs about robots, national parks, loneliness and a planet where the rich sell the rest of society for monetary gain and shoot themselves into outer space.
