In The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality (Basic Books, 2020), Bhaskar Sunkara explores socialism's history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future. With the stunning popularity of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Americans are embracing the class politics of socialism. But what, exactly, is socialism? And what would a socialist system in America look like? The editor of Jacobin magazine, Sunkara shows that socialism, though often seen primarily as an economic system, in fact offers the means to fight all forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to healthcare, education, and housing, and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities. A primer on socialism for the 21st century, this is a book for anyone seeking an end to the vast inequities of our age. Kirk Meighoo is Public Relations Officer for the United National Congress, the Official Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago. His career has spanned media, academia, and politics for three decades. It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Sophia Moccio and Aaron Habrack, ICU nurses at the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to discuss the recent developments in their strike, which has lasted over 75 days. Then, Emma is joined by Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation, to discuss his recent piece in The Guardian on the 40th anniversary of the coup in Grenada. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's bombarding of a blockaded Gaza, the UN Secretary General's calls for a ceasefire, DeSantis' crackdown on pro-Palestine action, and the potential speakership of Mike Johnson. Sophia Moccio and Aaron Habrack then join, first reflecting on the 83 days that they and the other RWJ Nurses have been on strike and the severe backlash that they've faced at the hands of RWJ management, before stepping back to assess the conditions that pushed the nurses to this point, with a particular focus on the over-working and under-staffing that led to poor patient care. After looking at the massive role RWJ plays within both New Brunswick and New Jersey writ large, Sophia and Habrack tackle the legislative reform they're hoping New Jersey will institute, and how we – on the outside – can help. Bhaskar Sunkara then jumps right into the forgotten story of the only successful socialist revolution in the anglophone world – that of Grenada – and what we can learn from its memory 40 years after a US invasion crushed it. After briefly exploring the role that socialist internationalism – particularly with Cuba – played in bolstering this revolution (and the US' opposition to it), Bhaskar steps back to walk Emma through the conditions of the absurd and corrupt rule of Eric Gairy that primed the radicalizing afro-Caribbean population for revolution, exploring how some 50 people drew on popular support to overthrow a regime of thousands. Next, Sunkara and Emma run through the overwhelming and immediate success of the socialist policies under Maurice Bishop, as well as the incredible effort it took from an incredibly small movement, before wrapping up with the eventual decline of Bishop's regime and the Regan-backed overthrow of his party after four short years in power. And in the Fun Half: Emma discusses the Peter Thiel–SBF origin connections, explores Eric Toller and the NYT's visual investigation into Israel's role in the bombing of al-Ahli Arab Hospital, and why such reporting is so important. Sandy from Ontario expands on yesterday's discussion about the ostracization and marginalization of Sarah Jamma from Canadian politics, the Speakership of anti-gay, anti-choice, and election-denying bigot Mike Johnson, and the GOP's continuing attack on Social Security. Yosef from Israel on his appreciation for MR's Reporting (and a small piece of context), and Barnaby Raine touches on the UK's anti-Semitic panic, plus, your calls and IMs! American socialists today find themselves in a tenuous position. Over the past decade, the left has become a powerful force in American politics. Bernie Sanders seriously contested two presidential primaries. Democratic socialists have won local, state and congressional races. Organizations like Democratic Socialists of America and socialist publications like Jacobin have become part of the political conversation. But the progressive left's successes have been largely concentrated in well-educated, heavily blue districts, and the movement that claims to represent the interests of workers consistently fails to make meaningful inroads with working-class voters. As a result, socialists have struggled to build broad, lasting political power at any level of government.“We might feel more confident about the prospects for the left if, rather than a momentary shift leftward in liberal economic priorities or the rhetoric of certain parts of the mainstream media, there had been deeper inroads made among workers,” writes Bhaskar Sunkara. “There have been rare exceptions, but on the whole, it would be delusional to say that our ideological left has made a decade of progress merging with a wider social base.”Sunkara is the founding editor of Jacobin and the president of The Nation, two of the leading publications on the American left. He recently published an issue of Jacobin titled “The Left in Purgatory,” which attempts to grapple with the left's failures, interrogate its political strategies and chart a path for American socialists to win over more working-class voters. So I invited him on the show to lay out where the left is now, and where he thinks it needs to go next.We discuss whether the left learned the wrong lessons from the Sanders 2016 campaign, why working-class voters across the world have increasingly abandoned left-wing parties, the fundamental error in Sanders's theory of the 2020 electorate, why winning over working-class voters is just as much about a candidate's aesthetic as it is about policy, why Sunkara is pessimistic that the socialists who came after Bernie will be able to match his widespread appeal, the “end of the A.O.C. honeymoon” on the left, what a “supply-side socialism” could look like, the tension between the left's desire for government to do big things and its skepticism of concentrated power, why it costs so much to build in America, why Sunkara is worried about America's “thin associative democracy” and more.Mentioned:“Brahmin Left versus Merchant Right: Changing Political Cleavages in 21 Western Democracies, 1948-2020” by Amory Gethin, Clara Martínez-Toledano and Thomas PikettyInfrastructure issue from JacobinBook recommendations:Socialism: Past and Future by Michael HarringtonThe Age of Extremes by Eric HobsbawmThe South by Adolph L. Kris Sunkara decided that a career in medicine was not for him, with a better work-life balance as his main objective. His search for just that led him to San Diego from the Bay area. A "razor-sharp" introduction to this political and economic ideology makes a galvanizing argument for modern socialism (Naomi Klein) -- and explains how its core tenets could effect positive change in America and worldwide. In The Socialist Manifesto, Bhaskar Sunkara explores socialism's history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support
Our 18th episode is here and we're super excited to welcome Lekha Sunkara Deere, MD. Lekha is an old friend from college, and we get into a lot of really interesting topics like her experiences as a pulmonary medicine fellow on the front lines in New Orleans during the peak of the pandemic in the area, becoming a mother during her fellowship, getting respect from both patients and other medical professionals, moving to Mississippi at 9, and of course, THE VACCINE. Did you know that colorectal cancer is the third most leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world (Rawla, et al., 2019)? More specifically, Rawla et al., (2019) have elucidated the role of dietary (e.g., red meat consumption) and lifestyle behaviours (physical inactivity, smoking tobacco, and excessive alcohol use) in addition to obesity as driving factors behind the development of colorectal cancer. In this episode of ExpertsConnect, we had a conversation concerning colorectal cancer with a medical doctor specializing in family medicine, Dr. Sheree Sharpe. Our discussion points included answers to the following questions. What is colorectal cancer? What are the differences between colorectal cancer, colon cancer, and rectal cancer? What are the potential causes and risks factors of colorectal cancer? What are the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer? How is colorectal cancer detected? How can one reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer? To watch the video episode click here. In this episode, Ben Bayer reads aloud his article, “Meet the New Socialism, Same as the Old.” In that essay, he examines recent arguments by socialist intellectuals like Bhaskar Sunkara who are attracting more attention from young people. Sunkara argues that socialism is essentially the extension of democracy from the political to the economic realm. Bayer responds that this argument trades on an ambiguity about the meaning of "democracy," and that the essence of the socialist approach to democracy leads to brutality. Bayer's article was originally published in New Ideal, the Ayn Rand Institute’s journal, on September 2, 2019.

My guest today is Ramu Sunkara, co-founder and CEO of Alan AI. In 2014, Ramu co-founded a company called Synqq which was a voice assistant for meetings. Sometimes startups are for learning. Synqq educated Ramu and his co-founder that enterprises truly needed voice for enterprise apps. That led to the creation of Alan AI which has been his focus since 2017. Earlier in his career, Ramu was co-founder and CEO of Qik which was a video streaming solution for mobile and was acquired by Skype in 2011. Before that, he spent 11 years at Oracle, serving in, among other roles, vice president of e-Business suite technology, and vice president of real-time collaboration technologies. Ramu was trained as a software engineer and holds a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin and earned an MBA at Boston University.

Abstract: Selecting actions which achieve desired goals often requires three-dimensional (3D) representations of the environment. Because the sensory epithelia cannot directly encode the worlds 3D spatial features, sensory signals must be converted into 3D representations. Here we investigated the relationships between the quality of 3D visual representations, choice-related activity, and motor-related activity in the parietal cortex of macaque monkeys using an eight-alternative 3D orientation discrimination task, visually guided saccade task, and laminar probe recordings. We found that choice activity was preferentially carried by caudal intraparietal area neurons with more robust 3D representations. Choice activity further stabilized the 3D representations, rather than attenuating information not directly relevant to the behavioral task (nuisance variables). An experience-dependent, sensorimotor association additionally aligned sensory and saccade direction preferences, particularly for neurons with choice activity. These findings reveal novel roles for choice activity in improving the fidelity of ecologically relevant object representations and mediating sensorimotor associations. Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of Jacobin Magazine, comes on the show to discuss his new book The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality.
According to some, politics as usual is being rejected across the globe and faith in neoliberalism is fracturing beyond repair. Leading political theorist Nancy Fraser, in conversation with Jacobin publisher Bhaskar Sunkara, dissected neoliberalism’s current crisis and asserted that we might be able to wrest new futures from its ruins. Fraser outlined the ways that global political, ecological, economic, and social breakdown—symbolised, but not caused, by Trump’s election—has destroyed faith that neoliberal capitalism is beneficial to the majority. Fraser drew from her book The Old is Dying and the New Cannot Be Born to explore how this faith was built through the late twentieth century by balancing two central tenets: recognition (who deserves rights) and distribution (who deserves income). When these began to fray, new forms of outsider populist politics emerged on the left and the right. These, Fraser argued, are symptoms of the larger crisis of hegemony for neoliberalism, a moment when, as Gramsci put it, “the old is dying and the new cannot be born.” Join Fraser and Sunkara and learn about this unique opportunity to build progressive populism into an emancipatory social force, one that may claim a new hegemony. Nancy Fraser is the Henry and Louise A. Loeb Professor of Philosophy and Politics at the New School for Social Research. She works on social and political theory, feminist theory, and contemporary French and German thought. She is co-author with Cinzia Arruzza and Ttihi Bhattacharya of Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto and with Rahel Jaeggi of Capitalism: A Conversation in Critical Theory. Other books include Fortunes of Feminism: From State-Managed Capitalism to Neoliberal Crisis, and Redistribution or Recognition: A Critical-Philosophical Exchange with Axel Honneth. Bhaskar Sunkara is the founding editor and publisher of Jacobin magazine and publisher of Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy. He is a former vice-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality. Recorded live at The Forum at Town Hall Seattle on May 10, 2019.
Gene Epstein joins me to respond to Bhaskar Sunkara's new book The Socialist Manifesto. (Sunkara was invited to participate, but declined.)
Jacobin, a socialist magazine, says it is benefiting from the rise of politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and readers' fears about the Trump presidency. Brian Stelter asks Bhaskar Sunkara, Jacobin's founder and editor, about the magazine's mission and goals. Sunkara describes the growth of the publication; reacts to Fox's use of "socialism" as a scare word; and explains why he wants to be "old news."

Fresh off his Soho Forum debate victory (as measured by Oxford-style rules) against Jacobin magazine editor Bhaskar Sunkara, Gene Epstein joins me for a review of the event and the arguments that gave his opponent so much difficulty.
In der dritten Folge unserer Serie „Medien. Macht. Was ist passiert? Wir haben Sunkara bei seinem Wien-Besuch im Kreisky Forum getroffen. Bhaskar Sunkara is the founder and publisher of Jacobin, a journal of “socialist perspectives on politics, economics, and culture.” He launched the publication in 2011 when he was an undergraduate at George Washington University. Today, its print edition has 40,000 subscribers and a million readers monthly online. Jacobin is at the vanguard of a resurgent American left that judges traditional liberalism as too weak and feckless for the times we live in and sees politics as fundamentally about class struggle. And Sunkara has been an able and interesting articulator of that view, as well as a longtime critic of mine. I wanted to have Sunkara on the podcast to talk through what his form of socialism means in America and elsewhere today, what’s wrong with my politics, and what separates traditional forms of liberalism from democratic socialism. If you want to understand what the new American left is thinking, where it’s going, and what challenges it’s facing, his answers are worth listening to. Enjoy! Sash Sunkara, Founder and CEO at RackWare, is a rare example of a female startup CEO who has built a sizable venture funded technology company in hardcore tech. She shared her journey and the discussion was enlightening.
In this episode, Bhaskar Sunkara, founding editor and publisher of Jacobin Magazine, talks about the short history of his publication and how it has thus far tried to differentiate itself from other magazines of liberal-left opinion. He also discusses the current election and explores the possible reasons for, and implications of, the rise of Sanders on the left and Trump on the right. Finally, Sunkara considers the near future of the American left. This interview was recorded on October 27, 2016.
Few words have had as little presence in the 2016 election as “socialism,” which was raised briefly in one of the earliest primary debates. Yet socialism could have a future in America, our guests this week argue, if we just think about it differently. Joining us this week are Bhaskar Sunkara and Sarah Leonard, co-editors of of a new essay collection titled “The Future We Want: Radical Ideas for the New Century.” Sunkara and Leonard say that people aren't scared of socialism taking their money, they're scared of Wall Street taking their money. In fact, in a socialist future, money might actually go where it's supposed to: back to the people. Taking on intersections of class and race, class and gender, our guests explain the logistics of moving towards a socialist future. Sarah Leonard is a senior editor at the Nation, contributor to famous left-wing publication Dissent, and lecturer at NYU Gallatin. Bhaskar Sunkara is the editor and publisher of Jacobin magazine, a left-wing quarterly magazine recognized for offering socialist perspectives on contemporary issues. Also in this episode: a montage from our DNC coverage as we head into election heat. Who is the 99.99% and what do they want?
On today's episode I talk to the founder of Jacobin Magazine Bhaskar Sunkara. Bhaskar is the son of immigrants from Trinidad and Tobago, and has written for a number of publications including Vice magazine, the Washington Post and The Nation. However, he is most well-known for being the founder, editor and publisher of Jacobin Magazine, which in its six short years of existence has become one of the leading publications of the left, drawing praise from everyone from Noam Chomsky to Chris Hayes. Bhaskar also started a book imprint called Jacobin Books in partnership with Verso Books and Random House. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
