We're bringing you a timely best-of episode, given the recent advances in generative AI tools like ChatGPT. A couple years ago we interviewed Jeff Hancock, a Stanford professor of communication whose research explores the psychological and interpersonal processes at play when people communicate with each other and with computers. At the time of this conversation, ChatGPT wasn't yet available to the public, but today Jeff's insights about how such technologies impact the ways we communicate seem more relevant than ever. “Learn to do good; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17 is one of many verses in the Bible about justice and protecting the most vulnerable. But did you know that the ‘business' of labor slavery has a massive footprint around the globe and is about a 150 billion dollar a year industry? It directly impacts about 25 million people, half of the estimated 50 million people who are enslaved around the world. Jeff Hancock, International Justice Mission's Director of Church Mobilization, joins Greg Leith on the Convene Podcast to give us an eye-opening perspective on justice, the ‘justice gap', slavery, injustice, the work of restoration, and what it means to us as business owners.

We're connecting with people more than ever before, thanks to the introduction of smartphones and social media. But that also means we have more opportunities to lie to people. A seminal 2004 study was among the first to investigate the connection between deception rates and technology. The study found people told the most lies per interaction on the phone, while the least lies were told via email. David Markowitz, an Assistant Professor of Social Media Data Analytics, University of Oregon, wanted to do a follow-up study, to see how well those earlier results held up. He joins the show to discuss his new study, Revisiting the Relationship Between Deception and Design, outline the social interactions in which people are most likely to lie, and explain why they lie in the first place.

Crypto services can stand out to their client base through customer service. Providing real time human interaction is a true differentiator. People want to feel supported at all times. Zoom, Facebook, group text messages: This past year, technology has sometimes felt like the glue that’s kept many of our relationships alive. More and more, we talk to each other with technology in between us. Jeff Hancock, PhD, director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University, discusses how this is affecting human communication, including whether people are more likely to lie online, whether the versions of ourselves that we present on social media are authentic, how artificial intelligence infiltrates our text messages, why video calls exhaust us more than in-person conversations, and more. Are you enjoying Speaking of Psychology? We’d love to know what you think of the podcast, what you would change about it, and what you’d like to hear more of. “Psychology trumps technology,” says Jeff Hancock, founding director of the Stanford Social Media Lab and professor in the Department of Communication at Stanford.“If you want to understand what's going on in social media, the first place to start is with what's going on psychologically.”On the latest episode of *Think Fast, Talk Smart,* lecturer and podcast host Matt Abrahams sits down with Professor Hancock, to talk about the communication tendencies, styles, and mistakes of social media users. “Whenever there's a new kind of technology ... our focus is on what it's doing,” Professor Hancock says. “But I think over time what we end up realizing is that it's still people using it to accomplish things. And I think when we start to when we step back … we can get a sense of what really is changing.” Think Fast, Talk Smart is a podcast produced by Stanford Graduate School of Business. Each episode provides concrete, easy-to-implement tools and techniques to help you hone and enhance your communication skills.

In episode 3 we speak with Jeff Hancock, an IT Security expert turned crypto startup founder. In his Show & Tell segment, which you can find on our YouTube channel, Jeff looks at how pound cost averaging (or dollar cost averaging) can make investing in digital assets easier over the long run. Specifically he looks at how this strategy would have served a FTSE100 investor and a BTC investor over the last ten years. The results are, how shall we say, compelling! In this part of the podcast, Jeff discusses the current state of the UK’s retail crypto industry, and we speculate on where it will be in a year or ten year’s time. . . . Adam and Richard visit DC Brau, the first production brewery in DC since 1956. They sit down with brewery founders, Jeff Hancock and Brandon Skall, to discuss the history surrounding the brewery and brewery legislation that had to take place in order for beers to be served in the brewery itself.Brewery Market EvolutionWhen DC Brau opened its doors in 2011, there were only 1,500 breweries open country-wide. Today, that number is upwards of 8,000. Given these statistics, Adam, Richard, and the DC Brau founders speculate if the market is becoming too saturated as well as what breweries are needing to do to stand apart from the rest. They touch on the evolution of brewery models - the distributor model to the taproom model.DC Brau + JamesonRecently, DC Brau has started working with Jameson Irish Whiskey and has been releasing two beers every year that are aged in Jameson barrels. Jeff and Brandon share their decision to sustain the flagship beers for so long before making changes earlier this year. One of those major changes being the new brewing system they have put into place that has significantly improved their brewing processes.

In an era of fake news, our society is in a bit of a moral panic. But Dr. Jeff Hancock, an expert in social media behavior, has found that it's human psychology, not technology, which drives deception and distrust. In this episode, he and Bill Coppel — Managing Director and Chief Client Growth Officer at First Clearing — discuss how to navigate the digital landscape to maintain trust and how we can use technology to help build it. In this episode, you'll hear: · How trust has evolved over time · The many definitions and kinds of trust · The new forms of trust we're seeing today · How we evaluate someone's trustworthiness · What role social media plays in the trust formula · How reputation has changed with the rise of social media · How differences in communication lead to distrust between generations · What role technology will play in maintaining trust between advisor and client Dr. Jeff Hancock is a psychologist and professor of communications at Stanford University. He is the founder of the Social Media Lab at Stanford and also serves as director of Stanford's Center for Computational Social Science. A leading expert in social media behavior and the psychology of online interaction, Jeff studies how social technologies and artificial intelligence affect us, from how we trust, to how we develop and maintain relationships, to understanding how technology is affecting our well-being. His view isn't that social media is good or bad, but that it amplifies everything and we must learn to navigate the effects. Before earning his PhD in psychology, Jeff served as a customs officer in Canada. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, he was an associate professor of cognitive science and communication at Cornell University. He lives in Silicon Valley with his wife and daughter, and still enjoys playing hockey regularly and does his best to keep pucks out of the net. We talk to BuzzFeed’s Craig Silverman, who was one of the first reporters to break the story about a cottage industry of fake news run out of Macedonia. Then we meet Stanford Communication Professor Jennifer Pan, who is pioneering new ways of probing the censorship and propaganda machine in China. Jeff moved to the UK from Australia in 2010 to do a long distance rally to Mongolia for charity, driving through 13 countries and over 10,000 miles in only 28 days. That's a pretty bold move for anyone, so you might be a little surprised to hear that his day job at the time was working in IT Security and Infrastructure. He's always had an interest in the business side of things beyond his job role though, so thinking about working for himself was an obvious next step and when he discovered Simon Zutshi's stand at a property event he was hooked. 3 years, 9 JV partners, and several deals later he's here to talk to us about his property journey so far. In an age when every conversation, email, and tweet could be digitally archived, how honest we are – or how deceptive – is open for scrutiny. But there is still a lot we don’t know about the nature of deception. How can we tell if someone is telling the truth? Are there verbal cues, in addition to the sweaty palms and rapid heartbeat? Is there a difference between lies, or is every lie the same? And how does the medium of conversation – an email, a text message, a phone call – affect the type of lie we might tell? This week on the podcast, Judith Donath interviews Jeff Hancock, of the Social Media Lab at Cornell University, on how we lie, and the role technology plays in the evolution of the lie.
