People are many things. Tabitha Soren became famous for her conversations with star musicians of the 90's during her stint on MTV News. But that's not who she is anymore. Tabitha is, among many things, a mother grieving the loss of her daughter, Dixie, in a 2021 car accident. She talks about the challenge of having to come up with words to talk about Dixie and what her family has been through in the last year and a half. And she talks about the inspiration she stills draws from the life Dixie led. Tabitha is also a successful and acclaimed artist, working within the medium of photography to create pieces that are vibrant, complex, and multi-layered in both the literal and figurative sense. And yeah, she is still the same person who had a front row seat to important musical moments. She fills us in on what it was like to be an extra in the Beastie Boys' “Fight For Your Right” music video. It involved cream pies that were far from fresh. For more information and Tabitha's photography, visit her website at TabithaSoren.com. Episode No. 516 features art historian and author Mary Beard and artist Tabitha Soren. Beard's new book is Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from the Ancient World to the Modern. It details how for more than two millennia, portraits of the rich and powerful have been informed by portraits of Roman emperors (and often by portraits believed to be Roman emperors), and investigates how 12 murderous rulers came to be so prominent in the work of artists -- and in the minds of patrons -- ever after. The book descends from Beard's 2011 Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art. Indiebound and Amazon offer the book for about $35. Material referenced on the program includes: Aegidius Sadeler II's prints after Titian's Eleven Caesars (which were destroyed by fire in 1734). Hall of the Emperors, Capitoline Museums, Rome. On the second segment, Tabitha Soren discusses her work on the occasion of "Surface Tension" at the Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, Calif. The exhibition features work from Soren's series of the same title, pictures of iPad screens made to reveal how we interact with digital screens in ways that join touch, art history and the present. The exhibition is on view through December 12. Concurrently, RVB Books has published a book of pictures from the series. It's also titled Surface Tension and includes an essay by Jia Tolentino. As of taping, it's available from RVB Books for 29€. Works from the series have previously been shown at museums such as the Davis Museum at Wellesley College and at Transformer Station in Cleveland. Soren's work is in the collections of many museums, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Harvard Art Museums, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the George Eastman Museum.
Tabitha and I deep dive into a wide range of topics, from emotional resiliency to Tupac. We compare and contrast journalism and photography and talk about navigating the current art, political, and pandemic landscape. It's a ride.Tabitha Soren is an artist and Peabody Award-winning journalist, best known for her work as an MTV news correspondent and on-air producer. In 1999, Soren took a fellowship at Stanford University where she shifted her visual arts practice from film to the still photograph. Her artwork speaks to the twists of fate in life that can unhinge us. She visualizes psychological states – the internal weather that storms through each of us.Her project Running depicts the fight or flight response. Panic Beach upends the viewer as panic attacks do. Fantasy Life is about what it looks like to try to touch greatness. Surface Tension reflects the struggle we all face as we adapt to technological domination. Her photographs are held in many private and public collections, and she lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Michael Lewis is a best-selling non-fiction writer and journalist. He initially worked for an investment bank, and his experiences of Wall Street excess in the 1980s informed his acclaimed first book, Liar’s Poker. Three of his later books – Moneyball, The Blind Side and The Big Short – have been adapted into Hollywood feature films. He was born in New Orleans in 1960, where his father was fond of quoting the family motto: 'Do as little as possible, and that unwillingly, for it is better to receive a light reprimand than perform an arduous task.' After studying at Princeton and the LSE, he joined an American bank in London, and wrote articles about the quirks of the industry under a pseudonym. In spite of his father’s opposition, he decided to quit his highly-paid job to become a writer. In Moneyball, he examined how a struggling baseball team used intensive data analysis to find undervalued players overlooked by richer clubs. The Big Short focused on the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and his most recent book, The Fifth Risk, is about the Trump administration’s approach to government. Michael lives in California with his wife, Tabitha Soren, and their three children. In 1993, Liz Phair flipped the indie rock landscape with frank lyrics about sexuality and anxiety on her debut album “Exile in Guyville.” In her memoir “Horror Stories,” Phair recounts the most transformative moments in her life as an unabashed musician and mother. On October 21, 2019, Liz Phair came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to sit down with photographer Tabitha Soren for a candid conversation about her sudden rise to fame, and the often unrecognized, universal experiences of shame and fear that make up our common humanity.
As 2019 draws to the close, the media tributes, commemorations, remembrances and explorations related to the 50th anniversary of the 1960s comes to an end. This special program will focus on the 50th anniversary of the Altamont Speedway Free Festival, the traumatic and deadly Rolling Stones concert in the East Bay of San Francisco that is often presented as the symbolic end of the 1960s counterculture. But was it? What is the legacy of Altamont? At the notorious December 6, 1969 concert—held several months after Woodstock took place across the country—one fan was knifed to death, three died in accidents, and many more were beaten and abused before a crowd of well over 300,000. Legendary Bay Area music writer Joel Selvin has written the definitive history of that day. His book Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day explores in-depth that dark day, what led to the mayhem and what that concert means half a century later. Nearly 50 years to the exact day of the Altamont concert, Selvin will sit down with photographer and music journalist Tabitha Soren for a discussion of Altamont and the final event of the 1960s that continues to divide and fascinate the public. Did the counterculture, formed in the Bay Area, end in the chaos of the Altamont concert? Is the mayhem associated with the concert the proper way to remember the 1960s ending? Why was the concert such a disaster and what responsibility did the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead and others have? Why are we still talking about it? Please join us for a fascinating and timely discussion on a topic and time period that continues to shape the Bay Area's consciousness. ** This Podcast Contains Explicit Language ** Learn more about your ad choices. The '90s pop culture icon who rose to fame as an MTV news anchor thanks to her high-profile interviews with the likes of Tupac Shakur, Mariah Carey, and Hillary Clinton finds herself on the other side of the mic, talking with 7x7 about her second act—as a Berkeley-based photographer about to launch her first solo museum exhibition. The achievement, though, is a long time coming: For 15 years, she followed the lives of minor league draft picks for the Oakland As (a connection spurred by her husband, baseball superfan and Moneyball author Michael Lewis) for the series that would become Fantasy Life: Baseball and the American Dream, the images of which now hang in the private collections of museums including SFMOMA and LACMA. Her latest project, entitled Surface Tension, is on view at Wellesley College's Davis Museum through June 9, 2019.
MTV News anchor-turned-photographer Tabitha Soren joins the boys to talk about about going from being on-air in market 99 to 1, explains the genesis of her new book Fantasy Life, wonders if she can travel cross country with a bundle of bone spurs, reveals who she would like to be when she “grows up” and shares her odd relationship with former Los Angeles Dodgers utilityman Davey Lopes.
Former TV host turned photographer Tabitha Soren joins us this week. Tabitha's roots in journalism subtly direct the subject matter she shoots, elegantly capturing human experience and presenting it to us from her own unique perspective. We talked about her most recent project, Fantasy Life: a book about the American dream of baseball players as seen through the images she had captured for more than a decade. She even resurrected an old photography format, tintype. Listen in to hear why, and what she learned during her time with the players. http://www.tabithasoren.com/ Tabitha will be speaking at George Eastman Museum on August 9th. Show #171 | Guest: Tabitha Soren | Show Summary: In 2002, Tabitha Soren began photographing minor league draft picks for the Oakland As. She followed them into and through the alternate reality of baseball. Along with Fantasy Life’s multi-media debut, Angie and Tabitha discuss her earlier work; her experiences as a woman in the intensely male baseball milieu; and her career transition from MTV News reporter to camera artist.

Tabitha Soren is not a natural baseball fan. She got interested when her husband, Michael Lewis, was working on his book Moneyball. As Lewis became obsessed with teaching his readers another way to watch the game, Soren focused on showing people how to see the players in a different way: as fallible and broken people who sacrifice their bodies for a chance to play in the major leagues. The result is Fantasy Life, a 15-year span of photographs of a group of minor league draft picks for the Oakland A’s. In the Spiel, yeah, we’re having a hard time understanding this whole “unmasking” business, too. Join Slate Plus! Members get bonus segments, exclusive member-only podcasts, and more.
