Hollywood rock n' roll icon, author and multi-disciplinary artist, professional dancer and musician Pleasant Gehman talked to me about her latest book  ”Rock ‘N' Roll Witch: A Memoir of Sex, Magick, Drugs and Rock ‘N' Roll.”  As one of the first punks in Los Angeles to document the scene she helped create in her fanzine Lobotomy, which lead to writing for the top mainstream rock publications. She fronted her three bands, all of whom released multiple recordings: The Screaming Sirens, The Ringling Sisters and Honk If Yer Horny. Also known as Princess Farhana, a professional bellydancer and burlesque performer, she is also a tarot reader and she will be making an appearance at the upcoming Rex Manning Day, a yearly event in Honolulu honoring the cult classic film, "Empire Records" which will be held on Saturday, April 8 at the The Equus Hotel ( 1696 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, Hawaii ) at 6pm featuring actor Coyote Shivers (Berko) performing and on the decks DJ Triple ByPass  and DJ Nocturna. Riki Rachtman has a lot of stories. He likes to share them. When he is not on tour with his story telling show One Foot In The Gutter he is behind the mic with an updated version of the Cathouse Hollywood Podcast . True tales from rocks most decadent era. Sure Riki was the host of MTV's Headbangers Ball which featured the biggest names in Heavy Metal. OK he is a veteran of radio and TV but what about the dark seedy past. From 1986-1994. The Notorious CATHOUSE ERA  The Cathouse was at the epicenter of the Hollywood Rock scene. Some of the biggest bands in rock would play unannounced shows at the Cathouse but it wasn't the performances by bands like Guns n Roses, Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Pearl Jam, Faster Pussycat, Black Crows  (the list goes on) that put Cathouse on the map. It was the sleaze and debauchery, the raunch and roll. Riki opened it with his roommate Taime Downe from the band Faster Pussycat with the premise of getting free drinks and meeting girls.     Riki enforced a no camera rule at the Cathouse so anything could and did happen.  While authors and journalists attempt to recreate some of the legendary tales of what really happened at the Cathouse they always fall short because they weren't there. The biggest names in rock roll called Cathouse there home and the same stands for the Cathouse Hollywood Podcast. One episode might feature an artist that sold 11 million records and another might be the coat check girl because when it came right down to it. When Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson debuted his Hollywood persona in World Wrestling Entertainment in 2003, he was two years removed from his first successful protagonist role in "The Scorpion King" and on the heels of more film success with roles in "The Rundown" and "Walking Tall."  Little did anyone foresee that "Hollywood" Rock would buoy the overall representation for Asian and Pacific Islanders in popular film for the next 20 years. Last week, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report documenting the prevalence of Asian and Pacific Islanders both on-and off-screen across the top-grossing films each year from 2007 to 2019.  Of the 1,300 films examined, only 44 featured API actors playing lead roles, nearly a third of which were played by Johnson.  The report offers more staggering statistics: In 2019, over a quarter of API characters in the top-grossing films died. Most died by drowning, explosions, stabbing or suicides Of the over 51,000 speaking characters in the 1,300 films examined, only 6% were Asian, Asian American or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders Only 50 of the 1,447 directors in the 1,300 films examined were of API heritage. In 2019, 67% of API characters played stereotyped roles The release of this report comes at a time of rising anti-Asian hate crimes nationally, and the authors of the report believe the portrayal of Asian and Pacific Islanders in mass media contributes to that.
