Interview by Kris PetersWednesday 13 is arguably one of the hardest-working musicians out there. From his solo project to celebration tours featuring Murderdolls songs, Wednesday not only lives the excesses of rock and roll debauchery; he sets the bar as well. Each of his musical undertakings, including Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 as well as Murderdolls and Wednesday 13, have the same menacing undertones of gore, horror and theatrics, but despite the obvious similarities, Wednesday 13 is much more than a one-trick pony.Blending the above elements with punk, humour and a ghostly sense of the macabre, Wednesday 13 has his roots deeply embedded in hard rock but transcends the barriers of a plethora of styles and genres that combine to make his music a necessary evil in a world growing increasingly sterile.2022's Horrifier was met with widespread media and public adulation, but these two things have never mattered when it comes to Wednesday's musical output. It is more about the sense of ambivalence and the irresistible thread that binds everything together that keeps the fire in Wednesday's cauldron burning.Such is his contribution to music that Wednesday could easily be forgiven for playing it safe with each new album cycle, but in true Wednesday 13 style, safe was the furthest thing on his mind with his new album Mid Death Crisis, which will be unleashed on April 25.More a step back into the things and a time that gave birth to Wednesday's musical psyche, Mid Death Crisis benefits from production by Alex Kane (Life, Sex & Death, Enuff Z'Nuff, Antiproduct) and a mix courtesy of Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Prong, DevilDriver) that devilishly encapsulates the musical strengths of both while remaining quintessentially the afterbirth of Wednesday 13.Wednesday spent some time with HEAVY to discuss the album in greater detail. We started by asking if he is confident heading into the album release date."Very confident," he replied without hesitation. "With my last few albums I put out, I didn't know if the audience was going to like it as much as I did. And when I was experimenting from albums like Condolences and Necrophaze and all those records, I look back now and those are the experimental records because I did some different things with them. And those were ones I took some chances with, and I wasn't sure if the audience would like them. But they did. This is the one record where I feel pretty confident that they're going to like it. I know it's hit all the bases with what I was trying to go for."The album is widely touted as a return to Wednesday 13's musical roots, an opinion we put to the man himself."I think so," he measured. "After COVID and everything, I had a little time to look back on my career and 20 years of doing Wednesday 13. And I just kind of looked at the whole career and went, well, what do you like best of all this? I started looking at it all, and I went, well, where I started was the most honest and real place for me. And that seemed natural. And I kind of went back to that look, and I went back to that sound, and it was easy to do. It just felt right, and this is more of a hard rock record than it is a metal record, but it's not just like I tried to imitate my first record or anything. It's just in the same spirit, and I feel good about it, like I did on that first record."In the full interview, Wednesday 13 described Mid Death Crisis as an energetic experience, carefully structured to reflect a live performance, and emphasized that sonically it encapsulates his career and aligns with fan expectations. He highlighted the song When the Devil Commands as the lead single, crafted to appeal to both existing fans and new listeners, with lyrics inspired by his childhood experiences during the Satanic Panic. He discussed his songwriting philosophy, focusing on natural inspiration from classic horror and pop culture. Additionally, he spoke about his collaboration with Taime Downe, noting its significance due to his admiration for Faster Pussycat. We spoke about his song titles and where they come from, coming up with fresh sounding material the more you write, future and current tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Alice Cooper is on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito this week. What type of work would Alice Cooper be doing if he wasn't the Frickin' Godfather of Shock Rock? Many celebrities will tell you that if not for that one lucky break or meeting, they would be working as a hairdresser like Danny DeVito or moonlighting as a lion tamer like Christopher Walken. They may have been just a jobber. Thanks for listening, please rate, review, and subscribe to the Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito wherever you pod.
“That's NOT how you eat a chili dog…” The allure of SHOCK ROCK is, has been, and always will be the LIVE component of it; being at the show and viscerally experiencing all of the sights and sounds, in the flesh and in the moment. While many artists do also have lyrical subject matter which might make them eligible for placement in the SHOCK ROCK subgenre (see also “devil stuff”), the primary component to ensure proper “shock rock” cred is the LIVE concert experience, the actual SHOW! Whether it's spitting blood, breathing fire, or doing an onstage duet with a boa constrictor, the key to really selling (and properly enjoying) SHOCK ROCK is the actual concert experience itself (because THAT is what sells records…or used to anyway). And what better and more convenient way to illustrate this point than with a brief concert review of the ALICE COOPER/ROB ZOMBIE show that recently came through Atlanta on “Friday The 13th Eve” during the Freaks On Parade tour stop. Just remember, “you gotta question, we've gotta answer for you”, because we're like “The Alex Jones of Metal” which means that this show is extremely “professional done”. Fix yourself a “duck sandwich” and prepare for some unexpected (and “unredacted”) Triangle outtakes along with some unbelievably stunning “suddenly science” factoids that you won't want to miss when you JOIN US as we enjoy Russell's Reflections (Concert Edition) regarding the ALICE COOPER/ROB ZOMBIE co-headlining show and dig into the unsettling, off-putting, and spine-tingling nature of SHOCK ROCK. Send us a textInfamous Lords and Masters of Shock Rock, GWAR, are celebrating the 36th anniversary of their landmark album Hell-O! with a spectacular reissue. This special edition, now available on blood-spattered clear vinyl, not only revives the seminal 1988 album but also includes expanded artwork and never-before-seen photos, including images from the original album release show in Richmond. The Hell-O! (36th Anniversary Edition) is available in limited runs of both CD and vinyl, exclusively through the band's label, Pit Records. To commemorate this milestone, GWAR is also reprinting their iconic "GWAR Must Die" t-shirts, which gained fame during their early pillaging days. The current lead singer of GWAR, Blóthar the Berserker, formerly known as Beefcake the Mighty, shared his reflections on this momentous release: “It was the '80s. I was so young and scared. I will always remember wandering around the seedy sex arcades of Times Square, pants around my ankles, tears in my eyes… little did I know, I was working on the most important record in the history of shock rock. We were polishing a turd for the ages… we wanted to call it 'Beat the Meatles,' but the record company said no… and 'Hell-O' was born.”GWAR is currently in the midst of their "The Age of Entitlement" tour, which runs through September 20th. This tour features support from Latin American death metal pioneers Brujeria, the face-melting grindcore band BRAT, and folk-metal group The Native Howl. Blóthar commented on the tour: “This is an incredible time in the history of the world, so much death and destruction in the face of so much senseless entitlement and arrogant darkness. We cannot wait to shock some sense into humanity with the most outrageous performance of heavy metal theater ever to descend from the gods.”Following this tour, GWAR will embark on "The Stoned Age" tour starting October 17th in Las Vegas, NV, and concluding on November 20th in Nashville, TN. This leg of the tour will feature support from Black Metal royalty Dark Funeral, hardcore noise makers Squid Pisser, and Cancer Bats on select dates. Blóthar humorously added, “Get ready to mumble!!! On this tour we will CHRONIC-le the embarrassing loser takes all choice between a neurodivergent fascist and a desiccated mummy to be the leader of the free world. What could possibly go wrong?”In addition to their touring and reissue, GWAR made a record-breaking sixth appearance on the AV Club's Undercover Series. Known for their unique takes on popular songs, GWAR covered the hit "I'm Just Ken" from the Barbie movie soundtrack, showcasing their unparalleled ability to reinterpret hits. “We've been fans of Ryan Gosling since the Mickey Mouse Club days, anwww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. This week we offer up the 12th installment of our series called, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss side projects and solo releases from artists we love. We are celebrating the adjacencies to a true rock n' roll icon: ALICE COOPER. Not much to say about the man, the myth, the legend. Capn'n Content suggested that we focus our listening to the gunslinger guitarists that have supported the Coop throughout his long career. So, that's what we are doing! Enjoy.New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about an artist that many of you know in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of the side projects that the guitarists who've supported him over his 50+ years have. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Hollywood Vampires - “The Boogieman Surprise” from Rise (2019)Billion Dollar Babies - “Too Young” from Battle Axe (1977)Electric Angels - “Dangerous Drug” from Electric Angels (1990)Lou Reed - “Vicious” from Lou Reed Live (1975)Kane Roberts - “Rock Doll” from Kane Robers (1987)Tokyo Police Club - “Little Sister (feat. So many people peg Alice Cooper as the Father of Shock Rock or Creator of Shock Rock. Nay Nay! Thanks to a man named Alan Freed (famous radio DJ who pegged the slogan 'Rock n Roll' and a man named Screamin' Jay Hawkins - the original shock rock performance was Screamin' Jay singing I Put a Spell On You as he came out of a coffin. This famous performance deserves all the credit, and we talk about the whole history of the song and Jay Hawkins in this Roots Music History Podcast Episode Most recently known for the Hocus Pocus I Put a Spell On You Song, the song I Put a Spell On You by Screamin' Jay Hawkins has not only been around for decades, it was also the first song/artist who brought us 'Shock Rock' or 'Rock Operas' that people like Alice Cooper are most known for. It was also birthed by the man who came up with the term 'Rock and Roll', famous radio DJ Alan Freed. #rockandroll #rootsmusichistory #rootsmusichistorypodcast #historypodcast It's been covered by multiple artists including but not limited to: IZA, Nina Simone, Jeff Beck, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bonnie Tyler, Seal, John Debney, Kandace Springs, Queen Latifah, and more. While you might know every word to this diddy, you might not know the full story behind the man who wrote it. A man named Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Turns out, screamin' Jay was just as spooky and eccentric as the song itself. While most peg Alice Cooper as the 'Godfather of Shock Rock' and/or 'Rock Operas' we must give credit where credit is due: Screamin' Jay was actually the first performer to bring us the Shock Rock theatrics, thanks to famous radio DJ, Alan Freed. So pour yourself some goblin juice, and enjoy this episode of Roots Music History as we dig up the Roots beneath the song 'I Put a Spell On You' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. #rootsmusichistory #podcast #documentary #rootsrockumentary #halloween2023 #halloweenparty #stories #storybehindthesong ✅Suggested Links Original Performance of I Put a Spell On You by Screamin' Jay Hawkins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kGPhpvqtOc ✅Become a Roots Music History Member (Level 3 = Members Only Videos):

Formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984, GWAR quickly gained a reputation for their unique blend of heavy metal, punk rock, and shock rock theatrics. At the core of GWAR's image are their elaborate costumes and grotesque characters, including Oderus Urungus, Beefcake the Mighty, and Jizmak Da Gusha. These characters, often depicted as monstrous and otherworldly beings, engage in outlandish and often violent stage antics, spewing fake blood and various fluids onto their audience. While GWAR's stage show and shock value are undeniably attention-grabbing, their music should not be overlooked. Combining aggressive guitar riffs, pounding drums, and catchy hooks, GWAR's sound is a potent mix of thrash metal, punk energy, and humorous lyrics. Songs like "Sick of You," "Immortal Corrupter," and "Bring Back the Bomb" showcase the band's raw power and satirical wit.Throughout their career, GWAR has amassed a dedicated and loyal fan base, known as the "Scumdogs of the Universe." The band's live shows are legendary spectacles, drawing fans from all over the world who eagerly participate in the chaotic and messy experience. GWAR's music and stage presence have influenced numerous bands in the metal and punk genres, and their impact on the underground music scene is undeniable.Sadly, GWAR has faced its share of tragedy, including the death of founding member and frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) in 2014. However, the band has persevered, continuing to tour and release albums, with new members taking up the mantle and carrying on the legacy.GWAR's legacy as a band that pushes boundaries, both musically and visually, continues to resonate with fans who appreciate their irreverent humor, theatrical performances, and unapologetic approach to heavy music. They have left an indelible mark on the world of metal and remain one of the most unique and enduring acts in the genre.GWAR, Oderus Urungus, Blothlar, Beefcake the Mighty, Jizmak Da Gusha, shock rock, heavy metal, punk rock, stage performances, costumes, fake blood, grotesque characters, thrash metal, aggressive guitar riffs, catchy hooks, satirical wit, "Sick of You," "Immortal Corrupter," "Bring Back the Bomb," Scumdogs of the Universe, loyal fan base, chaotic experience, influential, underground music scene, Dave Brockie, tragedy, new members, legacy, irreverent humor, theatrical, unapologetic, enduring, unique, influential, metalThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Alice Cooper was the original Shock Rock act. Borrowing from Vaudville acts, movies, TV and Barbie Dolls, the group and the man formed the much copied, but never surpassed Shock, Glam, Metal genre. Although his life has gone from alcoholic to born again Christian, his act has stayed the same. Enjoy!

After just sitting across from her this week, I went back to review my dear friends episode on the podcast. Not only was Sheryl's episode with the most downloads and listens, I serendipitously took note that it aired on the exact same date a year ago. All of that calls for a rewind, but nothing more than listening to this beautiful human, one more time. How does an 18 year old classic ballerina end up dancing in an iconic shock rock tour? God orchestrates, thats how. Join me for one really fun time with one of my sweetest, and dearest friends and supporters, Sheryl Cooper. She is a talent and a force, all her own, to be reckoned with. What a story, what a life, and what a woman.

Shock and Goth Rocker Marilyn Manson 11th studio album doesn't disappoint, unless you are still one of those expecting a triumphant return to the days of Antichrist Superstar. I spin my favorite song from his new album, Red Black And Blue. The entire album is chalk full of catchy melodic goth rock and fuzzed out guitars. Pure bliss for me!As always I encourage you to legally purchase or stream your music. Buying physical media will always deepen your appreciation for it. I don't monetize this podcast because I do not own the rights to these songs. Please support all the artists that appear on The ABC's of Rock by purchasing their music.
Marilyn Manson is coming out with a new album soon, which begs the question: Is shock-rock still relevant?? Can anything shock us anymore? Is the dude from TRAPT the Marilyn Manson of today because he pisses people off so bad?? Also, Spencer from Periphery says it's nearly impossible to make money in a metal band these days. Is that true? If not, what does it take to succeed? The LAST WORDS crew, joined by War On Women's Shawna Potter, try and get to the bottom of it.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
