S7E30 of TSORR Radio Show went out live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 25 July 2024.  The show was jam-packed with your favourite features:  Twisted Triplets, The Evolution of Iron Maiden, Immortals, The Diabolical Challenge, and a 5-minute chat with Basson Laas.  The rest of the show was made up of rock and metal. You can follow us on Facebook, X, or Instagram, just search for The Story of Rock and Roll on those sites.   The artists featured (see below) are in order of play, so you can get to the stuff you like quickly if you want to.  Regarding the above-mentioned, I interviewed Basson Laas, a singer-songwriter who has just released a new track called “Worth Loving”.  We chatted for about 8 minutes and played the track.  Check out the video on YouTube, it is really cool.  It will be the next TSORR newsletter (contact me if you want to be on the TSORR mailing list for the monthly Newsletter).     This week on the Twisted Triplets we had three tracks called “Million Miles Away” from Stanley June, Rory Gallagher, and Hanoi Rocks.  Stanley June is a South African artist out of Johannesburg.  Rory's track is actually called ‘A' Million Miles Away, but it seemed a shame to gong him out for that,  let's just say one of the triplets had a slight genetic defect.   This week, Immortals came from The Cult, and a track called “White”, taken off their album Ceremony.     The Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘F'.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had: Fozzy – Chasing the GrailFaith No More – Album of the YearFall Out Boy – From Under the Cork TreeForeigner – Double Vision Bomb Crocodile and Slow Panda's picks of the week were David Bowie – “Move On” and Gorira – “Our Time Is Now”. Artists Featured:  Rammstein, Airbourne, Foo Fighters, Coheed & Cambria, The Answer, Texas Hippie Coalition, Marilyn Manson, Nightwish, Thundermother, Therapy?, The Clash, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Stanley June, Rory Gallagher, Hanoi Rocks, System of a Down, Black Label Society, Iron Maiden, Basson Laas, Robin Auld, Parkway Drive, Sixx AM, The Cult, Fozzy, Faith No More, Fall Out Boy, Foreigner, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Butch Walker, David Bowie, Gojira, Resurrection Kings, Manowar, Machine Head, Linkin Park.    The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 3 of Season 6 launched promptly at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio and then crashed back to earth like a failed rocket launch.  It was restarted and got back on the air at 19h17.  The joys of internet radio.  This was the first episode going out on fibre.  While podcast people have not been affected, listeners to the live show have had a really rough ride of late thanks to load shedding in South Africa.  Since late 2022 it has either been my cell towers collapsing (Telcom) or if mine are up then the guys trying to listen have no power.  It is, as they say, a shit show.   When we did get going we started with Aerosmith and 'Young Lust' of the hugely successful Pump album. From there we had Ratt and then Sixx A.M., with 'Lies of the Beautiful People'.  There were two tracks with a Metallica theme running through, W.A.S.P. with 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and then Volbeat with an excellent cover of ‘Don't Tread on Me' to keep the show Rambling On.  Speaking of which I used Led Zepellin with ‘Ramble On' and Judas Priest with ‘Better By You Better Than Me' to talk a bit about the development of modern Metal. On the local scene, we checked out more of Infanteria's phenomenal album Patriarch and a track called ‘Repent Through the Orders You Seek'.  It was a pleasure to play the brand new track by South African Metal heavyweights Deadline.  The track is called 'Cult of Prometheus, it has just been released, Dave Devo Oosthuizen who works tirelessly to promote SA music, sent it to me and it is a pleasure to give it some airtime.  We had classics from ACDC, and Motörhead, plenty from the ladies, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, and L7.  This weeks Songs that may be about South Africa included 'The Ditch' (Dave Hause), 'Don't Lie To Me' (Dokken), High 'n' Dry (Def Leppard), 'Sucker Born' (Samantha Fish) and 'Take Back Your Life' from Disturbed.   This week The Immortals, i.e. classic metal tracks that are over 7 min long and will last forever, came courtesy of Deep Purple with ‘Child in Time'.  Following on was hard and I delegated the job to Tool and their amazing track about two additional chromones ‘Forty-Six and 2'.  A highlight of the show was a track sent to me called ‘Goodbye To The World and The Whole Damn Thing' by a band called deadfilmstar.  I really enjoyed it, it has such an evil feel to it.  It is Mansonesque but very fresh, check it out.   Wrapping up we had UK Punky stuff from The Police, the Jam, and then for good measure, we had Böhse Onkels and a track called 'Saufen ist wie Weinen' which means drinking is like crying.  It is the best Böhse Onkels track I have ever heard, love that little bluesy intro.  The new Bush album The Art of Survival gave us a track called ‘More Than Machines'.  Metalheads can go to the last 10 minutes of the show for Obituary and In Flames, Nu Metal fans can go twenty minutes before the end and catch Birthday Boy Kid Rock and a track off Rock ‘n' Roll Jesus and Limp Bizkit with the amazing Wes Borland on guitar doing a track called Rollin', thanks as always for tuning in guys, much appreciated, Adios Amoeba's catch you next week.    Artists featured:  Aerosmith, Ratt, Sixx AM, Thin Lizzy, Y&T, The Quireboys, Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Volbeat, Sword, Infanteria, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, L7, Dave Hause, Slash (feat Chris Cornell), Motörhead, ACDC, Dokken, Manowar, Deadfilmstar, Deadline, Deep Purple, Tool, The Dead Daisies, The Police, The Jam, Böhse Onkels, Bush, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Obituary, In Flames, David Lee Roth The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 23 of season 5 aired on 9 June at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up we had 1000 Homo DJs.  Basically, that is Al Jorgenson of Ministry fame with a few buddies, people like Jello Biafra.  From there we had a 'Poisoned heart' by Black Star Riders.  Classic rock from Def Leppard, Krokus, Journey, and Whitesnake off the Love Hunter album moved us along nicely.  Korn took us into the 2000s and we stayed there with 21st-century bands The Temperance Movement and a solo album by ex-Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell.  Jaques called in to ask if there were any drums so we took a listen to Doro Pesch and Warlock with a track called 'Hellbound'.  We celebrated the Queen's platinum (70th) Jubilee with 'God Save the Queen', the track that cemented the Sex Pistol's reputation as foul-mouthed yobs.  Staying in 1977 we checked out The Clash with 'Hate and War' and UK Punk heavyweights The Stranglers with a track off 1978's Black and White called 5 Minutes.  The highlight for me was playing a song that is very special to me by a South African band called Count Ash.  Featuring guitar god Joe da Silva, Count Ash were resident at the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville in the early '90s.  I spent many Friday nights there in the company of fellow Sleaze Patrollers Marq Vas, Dave Lee Owen, and Stu Hollendrake.  Thanks to Vas who has the largest collection of SA music in the world (check out Mark Vas's South African Music Collectibles) I managed to get an MP3 copy of the track 'Holding On' which I rediscovered on my Phil Wright Tapes last week.  It was amazing to hear it again.  It made sense to keep those memorable days flowing with another track by The Diamond Dogs, they have been getting a lot of airplay lately thanks to Rebel Rock's Tinus Nel, who gave me some recordings that he helped fund many years ago.  I sort of lost control of the show for a while but we did chat briefly about Rodriguez, and Johnny Depp and we got to hear 'The Economic Theory of Jesus' by The Uninvited for the first time ever on TSORR.  Artists featured:  1000 Homo DJs, Black Star Riders, Def Leppard, Dangerous Toys, Whitesnake, Krokus, Journey, Metallica, Korn, Thunder, The Temperance Movement, Thin Lizzy, Phil Campbell, Warlock, W.A.S.P., Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, the Clash, Butchering The Beatles, Hollywood Vampires, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Rodriguez, Kid Rock, Children of Bodom, System of a Down, Sabaton, Stone Sour, Vixen, The Rolling Stones, Count Ash, The Diamond Dogs, The Uninvited, Johnathan Martin, Buckcherry, Skid Row, Slash's Snakepit, Sixx AM, The Distillers, Ozzy Osbourne.

SIXX:AM have always been a band more the sum of their parts rather than a vehicle for their world renowned bassist Nikki Sixx.Comprised of Sixx, Dj Ashba and James Michael, SIXX:A.M are a rock band in their own right, relying on the power of their music rather than individual personalities to set their boundaries. They are responsible for some iconic music over the years, with the bands soundtrack to Sixx's The Heroin Diaries catapulting them into the limelight and responsible for hits such as Life Is Beautiful and Pray For Me.They have released an acoustic album as well as four other studio albums, with the bands latest release a hits package that goes hand in hand with Sixx's latest book The First 21.Vocalist James Michael sat down for an entertaining chat with HEAVY to discuss the album and almost anything else we threw his way."Hits is a collection of some of our more popular songs and fan favourites," he began, "and it's been a real exciting prospect to put this album and to be honest with you any artist that gets to the point in their career where they're able to do a greatest hits album, they're a lucky artist. I feel very lucky, we all feel very lucky to be at this point of our career where we can release an album like this. We're all very happy guys right now."While some may think putting together an album celebrating a band's lifespan is an easy proposition, Michael stresses the point that it is not as cut and dried as just selecting the tracks that did well commercially."Any time you call an album hits or greatest hits you've got to include your radio singles on there," he said, "so that was the easy part of the decision making process. We put the singles that SIXX:A.M fans know best, but then what we did with the rest of it was... it was really a collection of fan favourites. Whether it was songs that really went over well live when we were touring or songs that people have streamed a lot and obviously reacted well to so it's a good eclectic collection of songs. Some of them have never been on the radio at all, but we would consider them hits to our fans. That's how we came up with it and it was a fun process to do. It was a neat experience to go back over all of our albums and revisit each of those records and dust off the memories and be reminded of what the recording process was like and what the writing process was like. it was a really great experience and ultimately it just made all three of us feel very proud of what we've done over this last decade."In the full interview, James talks about the process of remixing some of the songs for the album and what that entails, the original songs on the album and how they represent SIXX:A.M in 2021, the piano vocal of Life Is Beautiful, Nikki's book that was released three days prior to the album, Nikki Sixx the person as opposed to Nikki Sixx the public figure, singing about someone else's life experiences on the book soundtracks, producing and mixing his own music and staying objective, SIXX:A.M's future plans and more.

Episode 32 of Season 4 aired on 12 August 2021.  It was a pretty mixed show with a healthy dose of bands that don't get a lot of airtime.  I am talking about bands like Chrome Division, The Hitchers, Hell Fire, and The Gaslight Anthem.  There were more live recordings than usual, The Rolling Stones, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, and Slade were all live recordings. There were also more new releases than usual, we checked out Dee Snider, Seether, Springbok Nude Girls, and Guns 'n' Roses.  Rock is alive and well even if Absurd by G 'n' R isn't quite what I had hoped for,  It's a grower.  The highlight of the show for me was 3 levels of heavy where we started with Skid Row's power ballad '18 and Life', moved into 3rd gear with Hell Fire, my new love affair our of San Francisco,  and ended in overdrive with SA metal monsters Sunken State.  Note that Hell Fire is not new, I just found 2 more albums I didn't have and I am Hell Fire befok.  The punk-ish stuff came courtesy of The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Sex Pistols.  We were light on Aussie and Germany and light on SA as well.  I am not sure quite how we ended up with a show so different from normal.  Anyway to quote Jack Hammer, "Thats how we roll".   Check it out, see what you think, comments welcome as always, 'til next time, have a jol.  Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, Brides of Destruction, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, Wolfmother, Ratt, Poison, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Gaslight Anthem, Chrome Division, Nevada Beach, Slade, The Rolling Stones, Gary Moore, Seether, MDFMK, The Hitchers, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Guns 'n' Roses, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, Buckcherry, The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sex Pistols, Smith/Kotzen, Yngwie J. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 14 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  The show went live at 19h00 on 8 April 2021.  We started with The Answer and a lame joke and ended with Mind Assault, a ridiculously good SA Metal outfit whose new album The Cult of Conflict is very worthwhile checking out.  In between that we heard some really great blues courtesy of Gary Moore, Dan Patlansky, and Roy Buchanan before switching to a healthy dose of 80's Metal from Skid Row, Night Ranger and Ratt.  I am currently reading Nothing But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of '80s Hard Rock by Tom Beaujour & Richard Bienstock so, you can expect plenty more 80's metal over the next couple of weeks.  We checked out Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, as we always do and there is also some ACDC, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, and Black Sabbath buried in here.  We dumbed down for Bloodhound Gang's ' Ballad of Chasey Lain' and  Danko Jones and then slowed down for a while with 'Plaza'  by Cold Chisel, Ian Moss demonstrating once again what a brilliant guitarist he is.  We stayed slow for a ballad by LA Guns and then went to SA's finest in the form of Johnathan Martin with 'Highway to the Sun'.  As always it was a jol, hope you enjoy it.  Artists featured:  The Answer, the Four Horsemen, Thin Lizzy, Live, Gary Moore, Karen Zoid feat. Dan Patlansky, Black Sabbath, Axel Rudi Pell, Roy Buchanan, Thunder, Ratt, Night Ranger, Skid Row, Bloodhound Gang, Billy Joe Armstrong, Slipknot, Probot, ACDC, Nazareth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ruff Majik, Danko Jones, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, Stiff Little Fingers, The Smiths, Foo Fighters, Smith / Kotzen, Greta Van Fleet, Cold Chisel, LA Guns, Johnathan Martin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Mr Big, Kiss, ZZ Top, Metallica, Mind Assault

As the lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock band Candlebox, Brian Quinn has traveled the world performing in front of crowds as large as 90,000 at a time and sharing the stage with some of most iconic legends in the industry. But to this life-long musician, he’s just as happy performing to an audience of 100 as 100,000. Because for him, it’s all about the music. It always has.  Drawn to the guitar at a very early age, he first picked up the guitar at the young age of five and was playing sold-out shows by the age of 15 with his hardcore band Burial Ground((1990-1996). He, then, spent six years performing in the hardcore circuit with what was considered one of the most influential acts of that time, inadvertently being credited with “inventing” the sub-genre of hardcore music described today as “Bloodcore”. Burial Ground released an independent album that received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. But, by 17 larger things were calling and Quinn headed to Philadelphia in search of something more.Soon after arriving in the city of Brotherly Love, he co-founded the Philadelphia-based rock band Octane (2000-2005). Still considered to this day as one of the most successful bands to come out of Philly, Octane sold more than 65,000 copies of their independent debut release and enjoyed more than 1000 spins of the single “I For One” on Philadelphia rock station 94.1 WYSP.During this time, Quinn was named “Best Guitarist” in the Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Music Awards in 2001 and 2004 and was routinely praised by fans and critics alike for his signature guitar technique, his ability on “slide” guitar, and dynamic on-stage presence. After enjoying five successful years with Octane, Quinn left the band to found a blues-based hard rock band that would later become known as Fosterchild. This project would quickly gain national attention and the band was signed to the SMG/ILG/WARNER record label from 2007-2010. The band hit the road on a U.S. tour and it was then that Quinn met Kevin Martin, lead singer of Candlebox. Immediately impressed with Quinn’s talent, Martin promised him he’d one day have a spot in Candlebox.Quinn continued to tour the country with Fosterchild and even garnered a special invitation to perform for the U.S. troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where the group performed in front of thousands of soldiers on New Year’s Eve of 2010.Quinn has been invited to perform at NAMM Ultimate Jam Night for the past two years, alongside Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and many other iconic artists. He routinely guests with the American Vinyl All Star Band featuring Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (Steely Dan/Doobie Bros.), Barry Goudreau (formerly of the band Boston), Robert “Mousey” Thompson (Wilson Pickett/James Brown), Leroy Romans (Third World / The Wailers), and Tim Archibald (Peter Wolf / RTZ).A proficient studio musician as well, Quinn provided the critically-acclaimed guitar work on Candlebox’s last album Disappearing In Airports, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Charts, as well as the 2017 release of Disappearing Live. He most recently contributed his axe-work to Candlebox’s forthcoming album Wolves, which is slated for a September 2021 release and has also lent his guitar skills to a myriad of artists across multiple genres of music.During his career, Quinn shared the stage with such acts as: Ozzy Osbourne, Slash’s Snakepit, Gene Simmons, Metallica, Kid Rock, Disturbed, Judas Priest, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sixx AM, Chevelle, 3 Doors Down, Seether, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Candlebox, Tantric, Shinedown, Robert Randolph & The Family, Alter Bridge, Godsmack, Taproot, Nonpoint, Mudvayne, Deftones, Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society, Buckcherry, Warren Haynes, Marshall Tucker, Devo, Finger Eleven, and the House Of Blues All-Stars (with whom he performed alongside rock legends Jeffrey “Skunk” Baxter of Doobie Bros & Steely Dan, Fran Sheehan and Barry Goudreau of Boston, drum phenom Kenny Aranoff (John Mellecamp, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morrisette), and James Montgomery of Johnny Winter fame).Quinn is currently endorsed by Gibson Guitars, D'Addario Strings, Planet Waves Accessories, The Rock Slide by the Songhurst Guitar Company, and LPS Clothing. Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for the support throughout 2020.  There is no question that it's been tough :-).  The X-mas eve edition of TSORR went on air at 7 pm on 24 Dec 2020.  It wasn't particularly Christmasy as I generally am not overly Christmasy myself and especially when it comes to music.  I wasn't a total grinch though and did play 'Christmas in Hell' by Sixx A.M. The show kicked off with some Whiskey Myers and then hit stuff like Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, and Animal Drive.  My daughter was in the house and she is a big part of why TSORR exists as both a book and a Radio Show so I played a couple of tracks and explained how all of this came about.  Kiss - Destroyer, John Paul Young's Yesterday's Hero, and The Boomtown Rats' masterpiece the Fine Art of Surfacing, all have a special bearing on the show as do Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and The Stranglers. There was a short tribute to Leslie West, a giant of a man both physically and as a guitarist.  He sadly passed away last night (23 Dec) and so, it was fitting that we played 'Legend' off his Unusual Suspects album.  Leslie's tone and feel were indeed extraordinary and he will be missed.  That's Leslie in this episode's thumbnail for those who may not be familiar with the man (perish the thought).Highlights for me included Tom Petty with 'Have Love Will Travel', Machine Head with Bastards, Tom Waits with Mr. Siegal, and Rammstein with Deutschland.  Artists featured:  Whiskey Myers, Slash, Quiet Riot, The Lazys, Animal Drive!, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Arapaho, POD, Rammstein, System of a Down, Australian Crawl, Kiss, John Paul Young, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, The Clash, Seether, Clutch, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Leslie West, the Killers, The Longshot, Cold Chisel, the Mayfield Four, Machine Head, Megadeth, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Prime Circle, Bad Company, Tom Waits, Iced Earth, Halestorm, Tesla & Slade.

S3E15 aired at 7 pm on 26 Nov 2020.  It was pretty painless, to be honest,  we started with Halford and ended with Sixx AM, as usual time flew and many songs ended getting left out.  According to the Rebel Rock Radio app data Asking Alexandria got 4 times more likes than anything else which I was surprised but happy to see.  Other noticeable mentions were John Cougar, Nirvana, Wonderboom, Rose Tattoo, Scorpions, and ACDC with Code Red off the new Power Up album.  It's the first time I have looked at those stats so that was quite interesting.   On the local front, we had The Burning, Koos Kombuis, Wonderboom, and The Black Cat Bones with an amazing track called The Hunter, this was off an album in my collection called SA Blues Breakers.  There was a nice bit in the middle with Tool's Aenima and Faith No More with Ashes to Ashes.  They went down very well.  The new Armored saint album Punching the Sky is also very good and we took a listen to Standing On The Shoulders of Giants.   Artists featured:  Halford, Armored Saint, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Rose Tattoo, ACDC, Warrant, Ted Nugent, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Jam, Slipknot, Asking Alexandria, The Black Cat Bones, Wonderboom, Nirvana, Koos Kombuis, Accept, Megadeth, Tool, Faith No More, Jimmy Barnes, Powderfinger, WASP, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Emigrate, Extreme, Dokken, Rainbow, Green Day, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n' Roses, and Sixx AM

Episode 22 went live from the Mix 93.8 FM studios at 00h00 on 7 June 2019.  TSORR Radio Show rocked from start to finish, kicking off with fast paced ACDC and Iron Maiden and finishing off with Guns ‘n' Roses and Pantera.  In between we played songs from 8 countries and 6 decades.  There was a quiet moment where we paid our respects to SA rock legend Piet Botha who sadly passed away this week.  It was a special little part of the show featuring two songs, give that bit a deeper listen and focus on the words.  Piet's passing is a huge loss for SA music and sad though it is I focused on my gratitude rather than the loss.  RIP Piet, you were very dear to us. Episode 22 featured ACDC, Kiss, Rory Gallagher, Badlands, Van Halen, Piet Botha, Cutting Jade, Jimi Hendrix, Guns ‘n' Roses, Jonathan Martin, Black Label Society, Steelheart, Joe Bonamassa, Iron Maiden, James Reyne, Pantera, Warren Zevon, Hazel O'Connor, The Clash, Edgar Broughton Band, Sixx AM, The Rolling Stones & Marilyn Manson. Enjoy, TSORR: It's all about the music m/
