The new music community has been impacted, inspired and transformed by Tania León as a musical creator--as well as an interpreter, educator, and organizer--for decades. In the last two years, the rest of the world has caught up with her. In 2021, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her extraordinary orchestral composition Stride which was given its world premiere performance by the New York Philharmonic just a few weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic reached New York City. And in December 2022, she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors along with George Clooney, Amy Grant, Gladys Knight, and the four members of the Irish rock band U2; to mark the occasion all were greeted at The White House by U.S. President Joe Biden. Back in 1999, Tania León was the very first composer featured in a one-on-one conversation for NewMusicBox; with this new SoundLives podcast recorded more than 23 years later, she is the first person ever so featured twice!

Did you grow up hearing only dead white male composers? How much has that changed? What do you know about the music of Cécile Chaminade, William Grant Still, Chen Yi, Florence Price, Tania León, Mari Iijima, Galina Ustvolskaya, Ruth Gipps, Maria Szymanowska, Karen Tanaka or Anna Thorvaldsdottir? Elizabeth de Brito of The Daffodil Perspective talks about her radio show, tokenism and the wealth of female, black, Asian, and ethnically diverse composers who otherwise go overlooked and almost unheard, and why we need to radically rethink programming if we want classical music to become truly representative. https://www.mixcloud.com/TheDaffodilPerspective/ www.thedaffodilperspective.com If you enjoy this conversation, please subscribe, check out our other great episodes, and even better leave us a review. On this very special episode of Songmess we are delighted to bring you our interview with seminal Puerto Rican indie band Balún! Today's show was recorded somewhere in Brooklyn at the Haus of Balún, where we got Angélica, José and Nora - three of the four dreambow darlings - to share some chismesitos indies with us. Buckle up because our conversations range from the lauded Boricua indie music scene, to the band's adventures through Bogotá for Hermoso Ruido, and the island's current path to recovery in the wake of devastating back-to-back hurricanes. Our playlist today is also a bit different since Angélica brought a series of pieces by modern Latinx composers. So even though you will hear a few non-classical tracks mixed in, we encourage you to wear your finest attire as you listen to this incredible night at the Latin indie symphony. (Special production credit to cutie haus puppy Midi.) In the same vein, both Angélica Negrón and Songmess will be performing live during New Latin Wave at Brooklyn Bazaar in Greenpoint this coming October 22nd. New Latin Wave is a multi disciplinary symposium that spotlights discussions and performances on music, visual arts, journalism, cuisine and independent publishing by Latinx creatives. I tredje programmet möter vi två New Yorkbaserade musiker. Hennes pianostycke Variations On The Orange Cycle inkluderades i Chamber Music America’s lista över nittonhundratalets 100 bästa musikstycken. I New York upplever Elodie Lauten en frihet hon aldrig känt i Paris. Några av hans dikter utgör librettot till hennes opera Waking in New York. Operan hade premiär i maj 2011 på Manhattan’s Theater For The New City, i East Village.
