On this Company episode of The Synopsis we draw on our 75-page research report on Axon Enterprises, a leading law enforcement technology provider, for a very in-depth break down of the company. Founder Rick Smith took a failed concept—the TASER—and not only created a succesful business around it, but made it become a mainstay of policing. Not content to just reinvent how policing worked in the field, Axon pushed into other critical areas of law enforcement like officer video, cloud-based data management, and vertical software. A 1,000x return since going public in 2001, Axon is one of the highest returning stocks of all time. But more interesting than the investment returns, is all of the lessons we can learn from Billionaire Founder Rick Smith. Learn more about our 75-page research report here. Resoundcast - the branding podcast from Resound, a creative agency
Is your brand imprisoned by a single product? Don't worry…we know someone on the inside who can help you escape. Some guy with an insane plan and a blueprint of the prison facility tattooed all over his body. Once you're out you'll be on the run, wanted by the Feds—and of course, you'll be caught up in a steamy love triangle. But don't worry…we're gonna get you out of here. Let's Try This Again. All right. Now that Prison Break's out of my system…let me properly introduce this month's branding topic, along with the overarching question. If your company finds itself branded all around ONE product, how does it pivot away from that? Should it? If so, then how does a company with a Johnny-One-Note product line rebrand itself so that people see a unified, authentic, corporate identity that stands behind all of its products? To anchor this in a real-world case study, how does a company like Axon, (formerly Taser International, the company known for building Tasers comes to mind…) steer away from being overly defined by one product in the first place? Tough questions…but if you feel like one product or service has put your brand in prison, here's our thoughts on making a break for it. https://youtu.be/lgof12A0QPw Before You Rebrand Count the cost. Rebranding your entire organization is a huge endeavor, so before you go down that road, think broadly and strategically. Consider the big picture of your brand, your products, and where you might be heading. A little more about Taser International, which dominated the market for Tasers and then, (surprise, surprise), became singularly identified with selling Tasers. While Taser had other products, breaking out of the one-product prison came at a price — rebranding their entire organization as Axon Enterprises, a supplier of body cams, drones, and all kinds of law enforcement accessories. While we can chalk up Axon as a success story — one of a challenging, but necessary rebrand from a single product brand to a broader corporate identity — consider them an exception. They're also a good case study of why establishing your organizational brand clearly, purposefully, and early on can give you a sense of where you want to go beyond one product. Brand Like an Extended Family If your company houses multiple products, define your brand in a way that allows it to house all of those products in a cohesive, authentic, and yet recognizable way. Piece of cake, right? We grant that it's not a trivial undertaking. But if your company houses multiple products, developing your brand into one that can lend full support and identification with all those products is well-worth the thought and planning. When it works, it's pretty phenomenal. If you think of companies like Apple or Nike, you see that this strategy of an overarching, organizational brand is one that drives demand for all the products they sell. Sure, the products themselves have their own brands, many with their own unique identities. But they all carry traits of the overarching corporate identity. They're all part of the family. For a fun analogy, you can think of a household brand as similar to the royal families that ruled England in an unbroken dynasty. Every member of the family shared a recognizable surname, not to mention a set of colors, a legacy, and a distinct family crest. While some of those royal families had to rebrand themselves (I'll tell you about how the Windors of Windsor Castle weren't really the Windsors some other time), the concept of a royal family name leads me to another situation — one where companies and brands need to be careful because the single product is a person. When Everything's in A Name You've probably heard of Dave Ramsey. If you haven't, he's a financial guy who became a household name for his advice about getting out of debt. He's also known for Financial Peace University. But while his main thing,

Episode 201: On October 14, 2007, after a gruelling 20-hour journey from Poland, Robert Dziekanski, arrived at the YVR airport's international terminal in Richmond, B.C. Dziekanski, who spoke nor read any English, was unable to read the signs directing him to what he should do next or where he should go. The confused man spent ten hours in the airport wandering around the secure customs area. His mother was waiting for him with a friend only a few meters away in the public waiting area. Had the two been able to connect this story would have had a very different conclusion, but they did not. She left the airport, frustrated, hours before her son's final moments. In episode #8 Jay and Mike discuss a recent broad daylight shoot-out in suburban Washington DC. As a result of the recent "defund the police" movement, the guys talk about the nebulous concept of de-escalation and how things move along the Force Continuum during dynamic lethal force situations. These ideas lead not to defunding but the necessity for more training. For the armed citizens, the guys get into the concepts of "Totality of Circumstance", cessation of threat, and disparity of force so everyone can understand some of the requirements that must be met during a lethal force encounter with a criminal threat. Once the threat has ceased - by their flight, surrender, or inability to continue the attack - so must your use of deadly force. This is a state-specific topic. You must know the requirements in your area that allow you to use deadly force in defense of yourself or others. Find the info you need for your state here: https://www.lawserver.com/tools/search-results?qry=use%20of%20force%20in%20defense%20of%20self%20or%20others Elements of Force - AOJP Concept Ability, Opportunity, Jeopardy and Preclusion must exist to justify the use of deadly force https://useofforce.us/3aojp/ Duty to Retreat https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/blog/what-is-a-duty-to-retreat-law/ In many jurisdictions, you have a duty to retreat from a confrontation before you can legally use deadly force to defend yourself. If you can escape or evade safely then you must attempt to do so. The Totality of the Situation When faced with a critical defensive encounter, you must assess the totality of the situation so that you may respond appropriately. Like all things self-defense related, they may be different in your state so be sure to find out what applies in your area. Several circumstances to consider: Age, physical size, fitness level, skill level, numbers, weapons, injury/exhaustion, a position of advantage, special knowledge, seriousness, aggressiveness, intoxication/drug use, propensity for violence, innocents in the area, and the ability to summon aid or assistance. Again, this is different in many jurisdictions, so know the laws in your location. https://gallagherdefense.com/2020/06/01/disparity-force-self-defense/ Elderly NY Women Attacked - Video https://www.foxnews.com/us/nyc-shoving-suspect-woman-92 Harold Fish Flagstaff, AZ - 10mm Ammunition https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=4266 Fish's conviction for killing a homeless man with a history of dangerous violent behavior and mental instability who attacked Fish while hiking on a remote trail, was obtained through a jury trial by stressing that Fish overreacted, through choosing to use the increased stopping power of 10 mm hollow-point bullets. State law in Arizona has subsequently been changed, such that the state now has the burden to prove that a self-defense shooting was not in self-defense, whereas the burden previously, before the Fish incident, was that the shooter on trial had to prove that the shooting was in fact, done in self-defense. The conviction has since been thrown out by the Arizona Court of Appeals. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/15199221/ns/dateline_nbc-crime_reports/t/trail-evidence/ And this juror was disturbed by the type of bullets Fish used. Elliot: The whole hollow point thing bothered me. That bullet is designed to do as much damage as absolutely possible. It’s designed to kill. And the jury had another issue to think about: Fish’s gun. The firearms investigator said that Fish’s gun — a 10mm — is more powerful than what police officers use and is not typically used for personal protection. And the ammunition Fish used to shoot Kuenzli three times, called “a hollow-point bullet,” is made to expand when it enters the body. Dynamic Combative Solutions - Dave Laird www.dcs.training

Our guest this week is Rick Smith - the founder of Axon, the company formerly known as TASER International. We have a broad ranging conversation where Rick shares his thoughts about everything from being a reluctant Harvard student to the differences between being a founder and a CEO to his new book, The End of Killing.
Rick Smith is on a mission to make the bullet obsolete. In 1993, after two friends were shot and killed in a road rage incident, he started TASER International with the goal to create non-lethal weapons that could one day outperform even lethal weapons. Today, the company is known as Axon Enterprise and also is the world leader in police body cameras, helping ensure police transparency and deterring excessive force. They are also run the largest data repository in the Microsoft cloud, with over 50 petabytes of police video data.
As our attention spans grow shorter, most of us look for new ways to absorb stories. But it's challenging to make your story stand out amongst all the noise and distraction. On this week's show, welcome to the world of the virtually immersive novel where tech and the printed work take you on a Sci-Fi adventure. The creator, L.S. Larson, president of Axon, formerly Taser International, shares his inspiration for creating the future of storytelling and how your brand can immerse your audience in your stories, too. “What exists today is just not enough.” —L. S. Larson L.S. believes that writing out of passion creates authenticity in promoting your brand story. After becoming a father of three daughters, L.S. set out to write a sci-fi series that would not only be fun but also show his girls that they can be great inventors and make a massive impact. Marrying technology and art, the Intergalactic Institute of Science and Technology (IGIST) Experience app immerses the reader and transports you to the IGIST Universe. The innovative app combines the essential elements of an e-reader with gamification you might find in Fortnite or your favorite filter on TikTok. But the real power of the experience stems from the compelling story that is elegantly enhanced by all the capabilities of your smartphone. So, is it a book? A game? An augmented reality app? Turns out its a little bit of everything. His immersive novel enhances the story with photorealistic illustrations and animations that pop up throughout the text. As readers progress through the story, they earn badges and coins which they can then use to purchase character portraits and stickers, as well as character cards. In this week's show, learn about the world's first immersive novel and how you can use these storytelling techniques for your brand. “No matter what problems we face and idea can prevail.” —L.S. Jordan Edwards was 15. Police officers shot and killed him and lied about what happened. Thirty-eight people were killed by police during the month of April. In Los Angeles, 28 year old Zelalem Eshetu Ewnetu, an engineer employed by the California Public Utilities Commission, was killed by police as he sat in his car in the early morning of April 12. He "fit the description", of course. In Milwaukee, a grand jury has recommended criminal charges against several jail employees in the dehydration death of Terrill Thomas in April 2016. A federal judge is allowing an Alabama school district to return to segregated schools. US judges are more frequently jailing defendents who can't pay cash bail. This tends to affect Black and Brown people disproportionately. Kalief Browder, who was guilty of nothing but couldn't afford bail, languished in New York's Rikers Island for three years (two in solitary confinement). He was never formally tried for any crime. He committed suicide after his release. A Minnesota man who shot 5 Black protesters during a 2015 rally has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Taser International will use police body camera footage to develop its latest artificial intelligence tool which may someday turn every cop into "Robo Cop." The resident of the White House says that he doesn't bother reading the executive orders he signs. Tuesday, May 2, 6pm Pacific
Luke Larson is the President of Axon, formerly TASER International. There’s no doubt the news media has been sharing what seems like a massive increase in the deteriorating relationship between law enforcement professionals and the communities they are paid to protect and serve. An element of the story that gets very little attention, if any, is the way in which technology is helping our law enforcement professionals do their jobs better, especially given the fact that our world is being disrupted in every way imaginable. Enter Axon. In my conversation with Luke, he articulated the purpose behind Axon — to make the bullet obsolete. Think about that for a moment — think about a world where law enforcement professionals don’t have to rely on the bullet to keep order and peace. Imagine a world where technology can replace the almighty bullet with something less lethal, and more powerful. In this very special episode, Luke Larson shares: The often untold story of how TASER, now Axon, came to be We touch on Luke’s two tours in Iraq and how that experience has helped him in his role as president of Axon The evolution of a product-manufacturing company to a SaaS and technology company The power of assembling a great team and the importance of clear & concise Values to guide the behaviors The way in which law enforcement is positively impacted by technology I’m really excited about this episode — and I hope you enjoy hearing Luke Larson's story as much as I did. This week's guest is Michael Brave, President of LAAW International, Inc., and the former President of the International Force Institute, Inc. Michael is also the National Litigation Counsel for TASER International, Inc. (as well as a certified Master TASER® Instructor and Legal Advisor to the TASER Training Board). His experience includes involvement in a wide-range of comprehensive law enforcement and private security risk/liability and litigation management services including: training programs, policy development and review, liability/risk assessments, training appraisals, department audits, post critical incident analysis, etc. He has served as a litigation consultant and an expert witness in state and federal civil rights issues. How Many Arrests in the US result in risk of death? For every 71 encounters an officer has in the United States there will be one use of force or potential of use of force. Michael tell us that then for every 1000 use of force there will be one temporal death.
This week, Inc.'s team of writers and editors discuss the solar industry as it braces for the future under a Trump administration, and they explore the burgeoning — and potentially illegal — startup ecosystem surrounding home-cooked meals. Taser International just lost a big client, but things aren’t always what they seem.
Rick is the founder & CEO, TASER International. He is on a mission to make the bullet obsolete.
Shares of Taser International (TASR) retreated dramatically ever since the riots in Ferguson, MO dominated the headlines in early 2015, about one year ago. Is the decline because of fundamental factors such as Motorola's decision to enter the body cam and evidence management business, or is it more from the passage of an unpleasant psychological milestone in race relations? Are international cities rethinking their need for conductive electric weapons or body cameras in the wake of the European Union's 911 moment in Paris last November?
In part 1 of our discussion of Taser International stock, we explore how there are two segments. Its conductive electronic weapons (CEWs) enjoy extraordinarily high profitability with mid-30's operating margins fully burdened, and competition barely exists. The other segment is Axon, which contains its emerging evidence.com cloud-based evidence management system, which reduces paperwork for police officers, helps manage the multi-million dollar risks of large civil settlements, and organizes cases prosecutors advance to convict criminals. Institutional managers of equities might pass over shares of Taser, because they appear expensive based upon the combined corporate earnings from both segments. We believe such an approach is deficient, because profits in CEWs are undercut by losses in Axon, where the company is accommodating large trials with cities such as New York and London that might soon purchase a subscription to evidence.com. In our opinion, Taser showcases how GARP Research has found interesting opportunities for its institutional equity research clientele through intensive fundamental research and deep understanding of how to analyse stocks through modelling financial statements and segment details.

Ever since the hapless Polish immigrant, Robert Dziekanski, died at Vancouver International Airport last year after being zapped with Tasers by RCMP officers, a flood of outrage has swept across the country and around the world. Serious questions are now being asked about the use of this controversial weapon by those paid to keep us safe on our streets. Our newspapers are full of reports about the use of Tasers in what would appear to be inappropriate circumstances: by transit cops in BC against passengers suspected of skipping their fare; by Toronto city police who zapped a suspected drug peddler after he had already been handcuffed and was lying face down on the floor. Alarmingly, the use of Tasers has been growing dramatically, according to a recent Canadian Press/CBC investigation. Who says Tasers are safe? Most of the research has been funded by the manufacturer, Taser International, themselves. The RCMP claim Tasers save lives, however to date, at least 22 people in Canada and over 270 in the United States are believed to have died after being zapped with Tasers. Should the use of Tasers and other similar electroshock devices be suspended, pending a rigorous, independent and impartial study into their effects? Speaker: Don Wright Don Wright is a regional development coordinator with Amnesty International, Canada, with responsibility for BC/Yukon and Southern Alberta.
