Sarah Thomas, PhD is my guest today. Our conversation centered around what Sarah is focused on currently in her career, tips from her book, Sarahdateechur's Guide to Podcasting, and book recommendations for teachers. Sarah-Jane Thomas, PhD is a Regional Technology Coordinator in a large district in Maryland.  She is the founder of the EduMatch organization, which promotes connection and collaboration among educators around the world.  Through EduMatch, Sarah has published several collaborative and individual books.  EduMatch is also a recognized Google for Education professional development partner.   Sarah serves as President on the Board of Directors for EduMatch Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit that supports grassroots work of students and educators.  In addition, she is a co-author of the ISTE publication series, Closing the Gap, focusing on digital equity, as well as a Google Certified Innovator and trainer. Sarah graduated from George Mason University with a doctoral degree in Education, and a concentration in International Education.  She also holds a Master's degree from Howard University in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.    Sarah was designated an ASCD Emerging Leader in 2016, and was recognized in EdTech Magazine's 30 K-12 IT Influencers Worth a Follow in 2020.  She was named by the National School Board Association as one of the “20 to Watch” in 2015.  She was part of the Technical Working Group that refreshed the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Educators in 2016-2017, and in 2017, she received the ISTE “Making IT Happen” Award.   Elijah Carbajal is a teacher who followed in the footsteps of teachers in his family. He has served as an educator in the state of New Mexico since 2014 and is currently a Title I Reading Interventionist. Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Sarah: I'm going to cheat a little bit because a friend told me yesterday where he thought mine was. And what he told me is the fact that I act on ideas. I move on ideas.Sarah Thomas, PhD, is the founder and CEO of EduMatch, an ed-tech platform for educators around the world to share ideas and collaborate on their common passions.“EduMatch started out very grassroots back in 2014,” Sarah says. “It was just kind of folks saying, ‘Hey, I know this one thing. I'm very passionate about this thing, and I'm looking for connections.' So what I would do is just kind of connect folks over social media that had things in common.”Today, the social enterprise is an umbrella organization for four different operations:* Publishing* Podcasting* Professional Education* FoundationThe company has already published 100 books!Today, Sarah is leading the company through a crowdfunding campaign on SMBX.Sarah explains:Back in December, I was in a Facebook group, and someone mentioned the SMBX. I went on there and saw what they were doing, and I was just like, “This is amazing,” because I also dabble in investing myself.So, I started going in and funding different things. I saw that there was a piece on there for entrepreneurs. I clicked on that and saw how I could get my business linked up with it. I remember the backstory. It was a Friday night in September 2014. I was chatting with a friend on my phone, and so something she said just kind of gave me that idea, like, that might be a good thing to try. I almost didn't act on it, but something told me, “Okay, you know, right now, right now, this is the time to go ahead and set up a Twitter profile. This is a time to set up a Google form. This is a time to set up a landing page. And let's do this.” I am just so glad that I listened to that little voice.Sarah offers some advice for developing this bias toward acting on your ideas.First, she suggests taking moderated risks. She counsels jumping in feet first rather than diving in head first.Second, she says it is important to remember what Wayne Gretzky said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take,” even if you don't remember who said it.Third, she points out that her friend Tammy Neal taught her that “it doesn't count as failure unless you give up.” Sarah adds, “Sometimes you might have that little voice to listen to as well, saying, ‘Don't give up. In episode one of our Strengthening the Forensic Workforce season, Just Science sat down with Dr. José Almirall, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Director of the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science at Florida International University, and Dr. Sarah Kerrigan, Professor and Chair of the Forensic Science Department at Sam Houston State University and Director of the Institute for Forensic Research, Training and Innovation, to discuss the inception of the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) and chemistry programs in forensic science. Built on the foundation of the Technical Working Group on Education and Training in Forensic Science, or TWGED, FEPAC became an official standing committee of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and awarded its first accreditation in February 2004. Since then, over 50 undergraduate and master's level forensic science programs have been accredited in the United States. Listen along as Dr. Almirall and Dr. Kerrigan discuss their roles as founding members and early adopters of FEPAC, training the next generation of forensic chemists, and the importance of expanding the number of forensic science Ph.D. programs. Former Green Party MP Barry Coates joins Purposely Podcast to share his founder story with Mindful Money. Mindful Money is a charitable social enterprise that aims to make investment a force for good. They aim to switch funding away from pollution and exploitation, and instead to massively increase funding for sustainability and the transition to a low emissions economy. Barry lived and worked overseas for many years, gaining a Masters in Management from Yale University, and experience in corporate strategy, fair trade, climate change and sustainability. When he returned to New Zealand he was Executive Director of Oxfam Aotearoa, initiator of a sustainability programme at University of Auckland and a Green Party list MP. Barry has been a member of the Government's Trade for All Advisory Board and Technical Working Group of the Aotearoa Circle's Sustainable Finance Forum, and he is a Board member of 350 Aotearoa. Soo Downe, BA(Hons), RM, MSc, PhD, OBE, University of Central Lancashire, UKSoo spent 15 years working as a clinical and research midwife. In .2001 she joined UCLan  where she is now the Professor of Midwifery Studies. Her main research focus is the nature of, and cultures around, normal birth. She has been a member of the Technical Working Group of the World Health Organization antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and optimising caesarean section guidelines. She has published over 120 peer reviewed papers, and has undertaken research using a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods. She is a member of the NHS England Better Births national Stakeholder group. She was the founder of the International Normal Labour and Birth Research Conference Series.

Why do some people deny facts that are plain to everyone else? Whether it’s about Covid-19, climate change or vaccines, some will defy the scientific consensus and cling defiantly to alternatives, even when they're demonstrably wrong. Why? Dr David Hall has studied denial so you don’t have to. I spoke to him in two interviews, pre and post-lockdown, about the similarities between Covid and climate change denial and learned denial is not unusual nor a recent phenomenon: it was first noted in reactions to the atrocities of World War Two and is a normal human reaction to paradigm-changing facts.It turns out, some things are too hot to handle, even for the grown-ups.Note, we’re not talking about healthy scepticism, which is to be encouraged. Argument is good! Denial is a commitment to opposition that is defiantly irrational. So where does denial come from and how can it be adddressed?Also, please note, the first part of the interview was done in our respective lounges during lockdown. Beijing's Pursuit of Clean Air - An Interview with Lauri Myllyvirta

Although Beijing still frequently suffers from stretches of heavy air pollution, the city has made astonishing improvements since the Airpocalypse of 2013, when for several days readings of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter, the most dangerous type of pollution in regional air pollution) literally went off the charts of the U.S. Embassy air quality monitor, which tops out at the U.S. EPA Air Quality Index value of 500. Today, Beijing averages around 40-50 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter over the course of a year. That's still worse than international standards (the World Health Organization guideline is 10 micrograms/m3 on an annual basis for PM2.5), but showing steady improvement since 2013, when the annual average was well above 100. Progress elsewhere in China has been less dramatic. In this episode, we sit down to discuss air quality in Beijing and China with Lauri Myllyvirta, Lead Analyst with the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Lauri has over 10 years of experience as an air pollution and climate expert, and has led numerous research projects on air pollution, assessing air quality and health impacts of energy policies, including more than a dozen modeling studies of the air quality and health impacts of coal-fired power plants. This research has been published and utilized in numerous countries in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Europe, Turkey, South Africa and others. Lauri has also contributed to numerous publications around energy solutions and air pollution and is asked frequently to attend seminars and conferences as an expert speaker.
